Collective Ink Lessons I Have Unlearned: Because Life Doesn’t
Book SynopsisWe all have ideas about what we think life will be like - ideas we pick up from books, films, music videos, the adults around us, and even church. We think we have a roadmap that will guide us towards success. But it isn’t long before life throws some curve-balls at us. Florence Gildea looks at a series of myths that we cannot help but absorb from films, fairytales, songs, and advertisements: that we get to call the shots and have control over how our lives turn out; that a happily ever after is within our reach. All the strategies we have learned to make ourselves safe, loveable, and successful will backfire. Life, it turns out, is found exactly where Jesus said it was: at the end of ourselves, at the foot of the cross.

Inter-Varsity Press Broken Planet: If There's a God, Then Why Are
Book SynopsisIn Broken Planet, Dr Sharon Dirckx, scientist and apologist, offers a measured and thoughtful case for how there could be a God of love that allows natural disasters. The question of suffering is one of the greatest hurdles to Christian faith. When believers respond to the question of why there is suffering in the world, they often turn to the free-will defence. This states that humans make choices for good or ill that can bring about suffering in the lives of others. However, that doesn't explain why children die of cancer, or why the latest earthquakes, tsunamis or pandemics have been so destructive. These seem to happen not because of our choices, but in spite of them. So how do we make sense of these events? Dr. Sharon Dirckx blends argument, science and first-person narrative in this unique book, weaving answers to real questions with compassion and empathy, while also acknowledging the element of mystery we will always live with while on earth. Dr Dirckx addresses topics such as: If God exists, why would he make a world with earthquakes and tsunamis? Why is there so much suffering in a natural disaster? Are natural disasters God's judgement? Is my illness a punishment from God? What kind of God would allow natural disasters and diseases? If you have ever struggled to reconcile the idea of a loving God with all the pain in our world, this book will encourage you that belief in such a God is not as unreasonable as it may seem. In fact, it may be where God is revealed most profoundly.Trade Review'Natural evil is one of the toughest questions that Christians grapple with. Sharon has combined real-life accounts with insightful theological reflections to create a book that will help anyone looking for answers. Most importantly, Sharon explains why, despite the suffering and evil we face, Christians can offer the redemptive hope of Christ to a broken world. Thoroughly recommended.' -- Justin Brierley, host and author of Unbelievable?'Broken Planet is a book that speaks deeply to the question, "If there is a good God, why is the created world riddled with natural disasters which wreak havoc and devastation?" In this honest and profound exploration, Broken Planet addresses the pain that can be associated with this question, while opening up fresh and meaningful avenues for thought and consideration. Amongst these perspectives are moving and inspiring accounts of humanity's longing for justice, restoration, hope and a willingness to sacrifice for others, which provoke one to consider the power and presence of goodness within a broken planet. Sharon has provided a helpful and impressive response to a difficult question.' -- Lara Buchanan, Speaker, OCCA The Oxford Centre for Christian Apologetics'Broken Planet is an honest, insightful and much-needed book. Dr Dirckx does not shy away from the intellectual and emotional challenge of natural disasters. As a scientist, she brings a unique perspective to the difficult question of how a loving God could allow earthquakes, forest fires, viruses, tsunamis and other kinds of natural forces that often cause such pain and devastation. This is my new go-to book on the natural problem of evil.' -- Sean McDowell, Professor at Biola University and the author or co-author of more than twenty books, including Evidence that Demands a Verdict'If you've ever thought that belief in God cannot be squared with the existence of a natural world that teems with viruses, parasites, earthquakes, tsunami and a host of other horrible ways to kill us, then this compelling, informative and lucidly argued book will make you think again.' -- Professor Nick Megoran, School of Geography, Politics and Sociology, Newcastle University, UK, and author of Big Questions in an Age of Global Crises'I don't recommend this book for bedtime reading, for it raises profound and disturbing questions. But therein lies its greatest value. Sharon Dirckx offers no easy answers. In fact, she makes clear that we will never fully understand natural disasters this side of eternity. But her book compelled me to examine my shallow assumptions and dig down to bedrock truths about God, our broken world and our ultimate hope.' -- Glenn Oeland, Senior Editor, National Geographic'How can there be a good God when there are hurricanes, tsunami and starvation? This question is often overlooked in conversations around the problem of evil. Rather than shying away from disaster, disease and death, Sharon Dirckx demonstrates that Christianity has the resources to face these issues - as well as to give us hope in the midst of them.' -- Lee Strobel, New York Times bestselling author and founding director, Lee Strobel Center, Colorado Christian University, USA'The occurrence of disasters and all the associated grief and suffering that they cause poses a major problem for both religious and secular people. In a series of thoughtful chapters, Sharon Dirckx discusses how we might approach this problem, finally landing on a Christian perspective of hope even in the midst of perplexity. The chapters are interspersed with moving personal reflections from both survivors and aid workers that keep the discussion grounded; they brought tears to my eyes.' -- Bob White, FRS, Emeritus Professor of Geophysics, University of Cambridge, UK'Using stories, science, Scripture and philosophy, Sharon helps us to think through the problem of suffering caused by natural disasters. This moving book is honest, and yet it is grounded in the hope of the Christian message.' -- Clare Williams, founder of Get Real Apologetics

Inter-Varsity Press Radical Gratitude: Recalibrating Your Heart in An
Book SynopsisAs Christians we should be the most grateful people alive. After all, doesn't the Bible encourage thankfulness and condemn grumbling? Peter Maiden traces the theme of thanksgiving in Scripture, and shows how we can genuinely live counter-cultural lives even in an age of rampant entitlement. With a pastoral heart, he explains how gratitude is the key to joyful, consistent Christian living, discipleship and mission involvement. He focuses on: · how we can develop the habit of thanksgiving · the benefits of gratitude · how we can be grateful, even in hard times Each chapter unpacks biblical truth and grounds it with practical application and personal illustrations. A series of short Bible study questions and reflections (mostly on the Psalms) conclude the chapters. Far from derailing his message, this unwelcome news energised his efforts as he poured out his vision on the page with his now-limited resources. This is authenticity at its best. This book will be the author's last.Trade ReviewI pray that this book will lead to a practical, measurable revolution of thankfulness. A hugely refreshing, encouraging and life-changing read! - Jonathan Lamb, Minister at Large for Keswick Ministries and author of Essentially One * E-mail *In an age where whining has become a pandemic, where entitlement sits cheek by jowl with incessant dubious claims of victimization, Peter Maiden provides us with an alternative -- a profoundly biblical alternative. In twelve short chapters he not only exhorts his readers to thankfulness, but fleshes out a plethora of reasons we should be grateful, and paints pictures of the glory of gratitude -- a gospel duty and privilege, and a mark of faith -- D. A. It is intimate, challenging and inspiring – an authentic reflection of the author, his faith and his service to our Sovereign God. -- Lawrence Tong, International Director, Operation MobilisationA wonderful, inspiring book! It addresses a topic that we desperately need in our anxious age of entitlement: gratitude is the hallmark of the Christian life because it helps us understand that God’s grace is an extravagant, undeserved gift from our loving God. Peter Maiden excels in showing us how to develop contentment and gratitude, while still being honest about our struggles and weaknesses. His wisdom, experience and biblical insight flow through every page. Read this book and share it! -- Rebecca Manley Pippert, author of Stay Salt: The World Has Changed - Our Message Must Not

Book Synopsis'A rare and personal glimpse of the sacrificial discipleship that marked John Stott's life so deeply.'Peter Harris What is a life of radical discipleship? Inter-Varsity Press God's Treasured Possession: Walk in the footsteps
Book SynopsisDo you know how God sees you? Moses is a key character in the unfolding narrative of God's Kingdom. A foundational leader of God's people in the Old Testament, he's held up throughout the New Testament as a man of God, in spite of his flaws. Yet Moses didn't always believe what God said about him. In this biblically balanced book, Terry Virgo invites us to walk in the footsteps of Moses so that, by faith, we can be ready for whatever life brings.Trade ReviewTerry Virgo has spent a lifetime preaching through biblical stories and drawing out their significance for today, and it shows. In My Treasured Possession he opens up the life of Moses, the greatest of Old Testament figures, and his exposition is full of insight, application and pastoral wisdom. -- Andrew Wilson, Teaching Pastor, King's Church LondonAs theologically solid as the best commentaries and as practical and uplifting as the best devotionals, these bite-sized reflections on the life of Moses challenge and inspire in equal measure. * Sam Hailes, editor of Premier Christianity magazine and elder at Christ Central Church in Penge and Crystal Palace. *I love Terry’s reminder that beginning with Moses, as Jesus told the travellers to Emmaus, all that had been revealed in scripture was about him. All of it - written for our sake. Thus he whets the appetite to dig in. What one finds is a feast, particularly for Christian parents seeking to bequeath this treasured possession of faith to their children. As such a parent, this book gave me hope to keep praying for my children as they wrestle with choosing between all that this world promises over the harder to grasp treasure that I want them to take hold of. This hope is fed as I read a moving portrait of the young man Moses coming into the fullness of his inheritance as part of God’s treasured possession. * Esther Prior, Vicar, St John's Egham *I am happy to recommend this book which could only have been written by a veteran pastor with a deep understanding of the human heart. In chapter after chapter Terry Virgo explains the spiritual dynamics in each event in the life of Moses, gives insight into appropriate New Testament parallels and fulfillments and then provides practical wisdom that I think will be both challenging and helpful to every Christian who seeks a deeper personal relationship with God himself. * Wayne Grudem, Distinguished Research Professor of Theology and Biblical studies, Phoenix Seminary, USA. *For years many have benefited from listening to Terry Virgo preach on the life of Moses. Now Terry has given a gift to us all; he has written down a lifetime of his insights and reflections on this servant of God which we can all benefit from. This wonderful book will encourage you, challenge you and draw you closer to God. You cannot fail to benefit from it as you read it, treasure it and take its message to heart. * David Stroud, Senior Leader of Christ Church London and Co-founder of Everything Conference. *Reading this book by Terry Virgo will make you feel as if you are tasting honey. It flows from the clear mind and warm heart of one of God’s most admired servants. If this is your first book of Terry’s to read, you will soon see why this is so. Get prepared to be both challenged and encouraged from start to finish. * Dr RT Kendall, former Minister of Westminster Chapel, London. *No one has captivated me like Moses. He was one of the few that ultimately did not want leadership because he really did understand what it would cost him. Nor was his fulfilment in his mission – it was in God. The story of leading the children of Israel out of Egypt is rich for us today. Now, add to that Terry Virgo’s insights to him and you have an incredible book that is hard to put down. I love the format of the book, which tells the stories in an engaging way and then forces you to ask questions about what it means for us. No one has impacted me more than Terry Virgo. He is a rare leader. Everyone will get something out of this book. * Bob Roberts, Founder of Northwood Church and Glocalnet, Keller, Texas, and author of several books. *With a wealth of wisdom and rich biblical knowledge Terry Virgo brings fresh insights into well-known stories in a way that equips leaders and encourages all believers. This is God’s word handled in a life giving way. * Tope Koleoso, Pastor of Jubilee Church, London. *Terry Virgo opens the book of Exodus and helps us to see how the stories it tells were "written for us". Whilst highly accessible and easy to read, this book is not a simplistic devotional. It combines deep exegetical insights with biblical theological interpretation that takes us from Moses to Christ and then draws lessons for our own Christian lives and service. Terry draws engagingly on many experiences from his own ministry to help us make personal applications. All Christians will be encouraged by this book to rejoice afresh in the astonishing grace of God that has set them free from slavery to sin. Church leaders will be especially encouraged to face challenges, disappointments and failures with renewed confidence in God’s call and the powerful presence of the Holy Spirit. * John Stevens, National Director of FIEC. *Terry Virgo is one of my spiritual heroes – someone who has greatly enriched the lives of many, including my own. This book on the life of Moses is classic Terry; an amazingly comprehensive yet skilfully concise portrayal, filled with clear biblical insights, personal illustrations and practical application. Read and be blessed. * Dave Smith, pastor of Kingsgate Church and author of several books. *

Inter-Varsity Press Smuggling Jesus Back into the Church: How the
Book SynopsisWhat’s gone wrong with the church? If you’ve been feeling that something vital has gone missing from our spiritual lives, you’re not alone. But from scandals involving celebrity preachers, to busy programmes that have little sense of God and struggling to find time to pray, what is it that lies behind the church is crisis? Is it possible that we’ve forgotten to put Jesus at the centre of everything? And if so, what can do we about it? In Smuggling Jesus Back into Church Andrew Fellows shows us with a sharp eye how secularism has reshaped church culture, changing the way many Christians and churches live and worship without being noticed. Both provocative and practical, he challenges us to live with radical Christ-like distinctiveness - distinctiveness that requires both reformation by the church and revival by the Holy Spirit. Timely and prophetic, Smuggling Jesus Back into Church is essential reading for anyone concerned about the effects of secularism on Christianity and modern church culture, or for anyone who struggles with Church and wants to understand why. Filled with passion and vision, it will point you back towards Jesus and revitalise your understanding of what Christian discipleship should be. It’s time to remember what lies at the heart of our faith. It’s time to smuggle Jesus back into church and back into the centre of our lives.Trade ReviewThis hard-hitting book uncovers the subtle, and not-so-subtle ways the surrounding world can creep into the church. Fellows builds on his years of experience in ministry to help Christians identify these pressures to conform. He is particularly severe against different forms of the prosperity gospel, from peddlers of self-confidence to salvation through busyness. He brilliantly introduces us to the historical forces that got us to where we are. But he goes beyond diagnosis and on to the cure: more of Jesus. This should lead to deep antidotes such as the sense of wonder, and a direct gaze at the supernatural. This excellent book needs to be read by every believer. -- William Edgar, Professor Emeritus of Apologetics, Westminster Theological SeminaryInsightful and convicting, Andrew Fellows’s soulful intellect opens our eyes to our cultural moment and calls us home to a life centred in Christ. -- Philip Miller, senior pastor, The Moody Church, ChicagoI have already found myself wanting to give this book to others at least a dozen times. I truly think every seminary student, every church leader, indeed every Christian who is concerned to discover why the church has lost its countercultural impact, and what can be done about it, should read Smuggling Jesus Back into the Church. -- Dr James Paul, director of L’Abri Fellowship, England

Inter-Varsity Press Reality and Other Stories: Exploring the life we
Book SynopsisStories shape us and give us meaning - but is it coincidence that the same seven basic plots repeat over time and across the world? What if stories not only reveal something about human psychology, but also give us clues to the meaning of the reality we live in? Discover how these archetypal stories - Overcoming the Monster, Rags to Riches, The Quest, Voyage and Return, Comedy, Tragedy and Rebirth - are not only universal, but also found in the story of Christ. What if Jesus' story is where myth becomes history and can give true meaning to all our lives? Explore for yourself the explosive claim that the life of Jesus isn't just another story, but the true story that satisfies our deepest longings.Trade ReviewThis is an imaginative, thought-provoking exploration of the power of story in our lives - and how the tales that we tell might point to a greater Story that encompasses us all. There is challenge here: some of it stirring, some of it prompting me to challenge the authors right back! But there’s also deep grace and wisdom: I was moved to tears by the chapter on Rebirth, with its beautiful depiction of the love and reconciliation that God offers us. It’s a book that reminds me just why I adore stories so much - and it’s a book that inspires me to pursue the Story that Peter and Matt suggest is the key to life, the universe and everything. -- Vicki Sparks, Commentator of the Year 2021, Sports Journalism AwardsReading Reality And Other Stories is like discovering the entrance to a cave. Once you’re inside you’ll find the tunnels through which all the great stories of the past are brought up to the earth. The greater discovery is that these many tunnels meet together in a single great hall of treasure. Without erasing the distinctions between the different stories we love - or embracing Christopher Brooker’s 7 plots theory too readily - Matt and Pete show how our thirst for great mythos is quenched by what C.S. Lewis called "the Myth become Fact", the gospel of Jesus. This book not only gathers together some of the best material on story and storytelling, but arranges it to show us that the best story is the truth. Matt and Pete have made this storehouse of storytelling riches so accessible that I will be putting Reality And Other Stories into the hands of every person we teach in the Speak Life Foundry. -- Nate Morgan Locke, Creative Director, Speak LifeI could almost hear this book as the banter of storytellers lingering around a dinner table as Pete & Matt regale us with their shared delight in the power of story. I have long been encouraging filmmakers to make adaptations of the stories and themes of scripture and found this approach of looking through Christopher Bookers "seven stories" genuinely inspiring. -- Luke Walton, Producer, Reel Issues Films. This is a book that's been needed for a long time. Its relevance comes from familiarity with literature and films over a wide range of illustrations of Booker's Seven Categories. It's also easily accessible, well written and not too long. Best of all, however, Peter and Matt do what Real-Reality demands of the stories of mankind: they relate them to His Story, the One who alone tells stories straight and true. And they accomplish that so that the Gospel itself—and our attendant responsibility not to waste time but be reconciled to God—is both clear but not unnaturally imposed. It flows naturally from the subject matter of the book as a whole. * Ranald Macaulay, Christian Heritage, Cambridge *

Inter-Varsity Press Journeying with God in the Wilderness: A 40 Day
Book SynopsisIs there hope to be found in the wilderness? Jesus' forty days in the wilderness, which many Christians remember during Lent, echoes the story of God's people wandering for forty years in the wilderness. The book of Numbers tells of these wanderings but can be a difficult book of the Bible to get to grips with. Delving into this book alongside the New Testament and reflecting with prayers and questions, this daily Lent devotional explores how the Israelites' wilderness journey can speak to us in our daily struggles and challenges today. Through all the ups-and-downs of their wilderness adventure, we join with God's people as they learn to see the sure and certain fulfilment of God's future promises in the book of Numbers. We discover God's abiding presence through, as well as in, the wilderness. We see how the wilderness points us forward to the Promised Land, and to Jesus as the One who brings us into the fulness of God's promises. With readings from Numbers and from the New Testament each day, Journeying with God in the Wilderness guides us through an often-neglected book of the Bible, helping us to make sense of the Old Testament through the lens of the New and giving us Christ-centred hope. Journeying with God in the Wilderness is written as an aide to the spiritual journey of faith and can be read either individually or in small groups. It will encourage and inspire anyone feeling lost or bewildered on life's journey, or who wants to join in with the long Christian tradition of Lent as a wilderness experience, by showing them the fulfilment of the promises of God to his people in the wilderness. Join Mark Broadway this Lent and find hope for your wilderness journey.Trade Review"In this delightful study, Mark does three very helpful things. First, he offers us a positive and manageable way in to the Book of Numbers, which is both a vital part of the canon and a neglected one. Secondly, he makes creative and insightful connections with other parts of Scripture. Thirdly, he connects both of these with the realities of the lived Christian life, drawing from his own experience and insight. The combination is certain to be an encouragement and a blessing for your Lenten journey. Take and read!" -- Rev'd Dr Ian Paul, Theologian, Author, Speaker"During Lent we talk often about the wilderness but rarely take time to reflect on the story of God's people in the wilderness that is laid out in Numbers. This brilliant book of reflections takes us step by step through the book of Numbers and opens our eyes to the many riches that wilderness experiences can offer. I highly recommend it!" -- Dr Paula Gooder, Writer and Speaker"Warm, honest, inviting biblical wisdom. Mark is a thoughtful, relaxed, guide as we journey through the book of Numbers, always helping us see how the story of God's people in the wilderness, is taken up in Jesus' own life, and through the New Testament to our own lives. A model in the use of the Old Testament in the life of Jesus' disciples today." -- Rev'd Professor Jeremy Duff, Principal of St Padarn's Theological Institute"Mark Broadway offers everything that should be in a good Lenten study book. It doesn't need any specialist prior knowledge at all - Mark does not browbeat with theology, but provides straightforward, grounded daily theological insight relevant to our modern lives. For many of us, Numbers has been literally and metaphorically a 'closed book' of the Bible. But here it is opened to us with deft skill, drawing us into the dramatic narrative and calling our attention to the constant points of reference between our own lives and these ancient events. In doing so he imbues them with an engaging freshness: this is personal Bible study at its best. It is written for absolutely everyone, though I wonder - with some professional excitement - if this is a Bible study guide which will be rather more accessible to men than is typical for the genre, and only in part because of the nature of the events described in Numbers. I can recommend this book gladly, and will be buying copies for friends." -- Canon Tim Llewellyn Jones, Director of Ministry & Discipleship, Llandaff Diocese"The book of Numbers is all too easily overlooked by today's Christians, even though it recounts the things which Paul tells us "happened to them as examples and were written down as warnings for us" (1 Corinthians 10:11). This Lent devotional will take you along with the Israelites on their journey through the wilderness, pointing out the examples and warnings, offering us hope and challenging us to do better as we face our own wilderness experiences today." -- Dr Ros Clarke, Associate Director of Church Society and author of 'Forty Women' and 'Human'"In the wake of the personal and societal wilderness brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic, this Lenten devotional is especially fitting for a time such as this. Mark skilfully approaches Numbers, a book whose pages are often intentionally passed over, and makes it wonderfully accessible in a way not seen often. His balance of interesting historical background, modern cultural references, and relatable personal anecdotes help illustrate and illuminate the story of God's character and His faithfulness to His people Israel even among the trials of their wilderness wanderings on the way to the Promised Land. More importantly, throughout this devotional Mark ties the Lord’s promises to Israel with His ultimate plan for all the nations in the sending of His son Jesus Christ for the redemption of the whole world!" -- Canon Wes Jagoe, Canon to the Archbishop of the Anglican Church in North America

Collective Ink A to Z of Mindfulness for Christians: A helpful,
Book SynopsisAn A to Z of Mindfulness for Christians is geared to help Christians live in the now, the present -- the presence of God -- by encouraging them to explore mindfulness. Studies show that mindfulness benefits not only people with depression, anxiety and pain; it also benefits those who do not live with such conditions but who would like nonetheless to have greater well-being in their lives. Drawing from personal experience and the experience of others, David Harper shows how mindfulness can make a positive impact on well-being and therefore on faith and spirituality, while countering some of the myths about mindfulness. Divided into 52 themes and spanning the alphabet, An A to Z of Mindfulness for Christians explores aspects of mindfulness and how they relate to being a Christian. Each letter represents two relevant themes, from Awake and Attitude to Body and Breath to Zest and Zacchaeus, and each theme is informative, encouraging and overlaps with spirituality, faith and mindfulness.

Inter-Varsity Press The Cross of Christ: With Study Guide
Book SynopsisThe Cross is the universal symbol of the Christian faith. But what does the Cross mean? Why did Jesus have to die? In this magisterial and best-selling book, John Stott unpacks the significance of Christ's cross and answers objections commonly brought against biblical teaching on the atonement. Stott will help you discover how Jesus himself understood the cross, and how 'Christ in our place' is at the heart of its meaning. Understand what the cross achieved, and learn what it means to live under the cross. This modern classic combines excellent biblical exposition, and a characteristically thoughtful study of Christian belief, with a searching call to the church to live under the cross.Trade ReviewIn our world of war and terror, there is nothing more important to contemplate than the cross of Christ. May John Stott’s reflections give us the courage to fight, with all the love within us, the war of the slaughtered Lamb. The cross teaches us there is something worth dying for but nothing worth killing for, that we can conquer evil without mirroring it. So grab this book and get ready to live real good and get beat up real bad. It is the story of our faith. * author of The Irresistible Revolution *Rarely does a volume of theology combine six cardinal virtues, but John Stott’s The Cross of Christ does so magnificently. It says what must be said about the cross; it gently but firmly warns against what must not be said; it grounds its judgments in biblical texts, again and again; it hierarchizes its arguments so that the main thing is always the main thing; it is written with admirable clarity; and it is so cast as to elicit genuine worship and thankfulness from any thoughtful reader. There are not many ‘must read’ books – books that belong on every minister’s shelf, and on the shelves of thoughtful laypersons who want a better grasp of what is central in Scripture – but this is one of them. * Trinity Evangelical Divinity School *I have no hesitation in saying that this is the most enriching theological book I have ever read. I read it slowly and devotionally over a period of several months. I found that it edified and challenged me, thrilled me with the glory of the cross and equipped me to answer some of the questions non-Christians and sceptics ask about the cross * teaching director, Youth for Christ, Sri Lanka *John Stott’s marvellous treatment of the biblical, theological and practical meaning of the cross is more needed today than ever, especially in light of its uncompromising defence of the heart of Christ’s death for us as a "propitiation", a sacrifice that bore God’s wrath in our place and turned his wrath to favour for undeserving sinnersJohn Stott rises grandly to the challenge of the greatest of all themes. All the qualities that we expect of him—biblical precision, thoughtfulness and thoroughness, order and method, moral alertness and the measured tread, balanced judgment and practical passion—are here in fullest evidence. This, more than any book he has written, is his masterpiece. * author of Knowing God *Outside of the Bible itself, this may be the best book I've ever read on the cross of Christ. It is thorough, thoughtful and timely. As I read it, my mind was challenged, my heart was warmed, my faith was strengthened, and my focus was sharpened on the cross. Praise God for just giving us Jesus with nail prints in his hands and feet! * author of Just Give Me Jesus *I read everything John Stott writes because I know it will be biblical, well-reasoned and contextually applicable. The Cross of Christ is an intelligent, imaginative and timely exploration of the centrality of the cross, by a personal mentor I've come to appreciate for his scholar's mind and pastor's heart; he knows God deeply, understands the times clearly and engagingly explains truth in a relativistic age. * author of Too Christian, Too Pagan *John Stott is loved and revered in our home. We have all of his writings, I believe, and in the honored center place in our bookshelf sits The Cross of Christ. My wife and I consider The Cross of Christ one of the outstanding books of all times. We refer to it often. We have given copies away and recommended it widely. We take it out as we discuss the work of the Savior and in preparation for preaching and teaching. My own personally autographed copy is all marked up. It is an outstanding exposition of scriptural truth. I believe we must saturate the churches across the world with the central truth of The Cross of Christ. Once again as a call for the history of Christianity, a fresh generation of young followers of Jesus Christ need to understand the cross of Christ. Many are weak and some are even childish spiritually for not understanding the work of the cross. Chapter six alone—"Self-Substitution of God"—is worth the whole of this rich, God-honoring, Christ-exhausting, devotional, biblical, ever-so-balanced, theologically sane and clear book. * international evangelist *The passion of Paul's statement, 'I am determined to know nothing among you but Jesus Christ and him crucified,' resonates on every page of this classic book on the centrality of the cross. What's more, Dr. Stott has validated every word with a life spent in servant leadership. * musician, author of A Violent Grace *Biblical, clear and cogent are the words that came to mind on first reading this book. The passing of time has also made it indisputable that this book is a classic which is profound in a way that few evangelical books have been in recent years. It is compelling in its simplicity and comprehensive in its grasp of the way in which God conquers our sin, our rebellion, our ghastly evil through the person of Christ. Here is truth which is true, not just because it works for me, but because it is grounded in the very being and character of God, revealed and authenticated by him, worked out in the very fabric of our history, and therefore it is truth for all time. * Andrew Mutch Distinguished Professor of Historical and Systematic Theology at Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary *For those who want an evenhanded and robust defense of the penal substitutionary theory of the atonement, John Stott's The Cross of Christ is the benchmark. With a deft hand, Stott has given us a classic articulation of this influential, evangelical doctrine that is both vigorous and readable. Books like this stand the test of time. * author of The Sacred Way *As relevant today as when it first appeared, The Cross of Christ is more than a classic. It restates in our own time the heart of the Christian message. Like John the Baptist, John Stott points us away from the distractions that occupy so much of our energies in order, announcing, 'Behold, the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!' * professor of theology and apologetics, Westminster Seminary California *

Inter-Varsity Press Married for God: Making Your Marriage The Best It
Book SynopsisGod invented marriage. So it seems rather obvious to look to our Maker for marriage instructions. Yet by nature we prefer to work it out for ourselves, starting with our own needs, hopes and desires. This book turns our thinking upside down. The author examines the Bible's teaching on marriage, while remaining firmly earthed in the twenty-first-century world where messing up, heartbreak, divorce and sexual chaos are distressingly common. Starting with God's grace applied to our pain and failure, the author centres on God's plan for sex and marriage, one of service. Whether you are an engaged couple preparing for marriage, or have been married for many years, this Biblical wisdom will help you grow your love and commitment both to one another and to God.Trade ReviewRefreshing, rigorous and readable. This book acts as a corrective to exaggerated claims and self-indulgent attitudes concerning marriage endemic in our culture, and becomes a call to joyful biblical simplicity and true God-centred liberty in marrige. * John and Ann Benton *An invaluable challenge to deepen and strengthen relationships, through a fresh understanding of God's purpose for marriage. * Jason and Rachel Gardner *An excellent, challenging and helpful book * Martin and Elizabeth Goldsmith *Ash’s book is one I use for premarital counselling. Concise, thoughtful, intelligent, biblical, and full of that increasingly rare commodity—common sense. I heartily recommend it as a book to read and also as a basis for framing and informing pastoral discussions with Christian couples who are looking toward marriage and want a realistic but encouraging picture of what to expect. A great book. -- Carl R. Trueman * Professor of Biblical and Religious Studies, Grove City College *Into a world debating the value and purpose of marriage comes this little book called Married for God. It is a wonderful introduction to the purpose and function of marriage and intimacy. This book is perfect for couples contemplating marriage, and it is a good reminder to those already committed to marriage of why God designed it for our flourishing. Darrell L. Bock, Executive Director of Cultural Engagement, The Hendricks Center, Dallas Theological Seminary * Website *Engaged couples would benefit from carefully reading this book. The way Ash applies the Bible is pithy, practical, and wise. Andy Naselli, Associate Professor of Systematic Theology and New Testament, Bethlehem College & Seminary * Website *In Married for God, Christopher Ash provides a biblical foundation for a God-centered understanding of marriage that will help to correct weak and idolatrous perspectives and lead to honoring God and edifying his people. He offers biblical commentary and theological conclusions with real-life vignettes for seamless application. Among the many books on marriage, this one gets to the point with clarity and robust theological insight. Inter-Varsity Press Out of the Saltshaker and into the World:
Book SynopsisAcross the centuries, as people have considered their individual and social needs, many solutions for transforming human existence have been offered — psychological, political and religious. However, the New Testament claims that genuine and lasting change can only be found in Jesus Christ. The transformation he makes possible is spiritual, moral and physical, bringing us ultimately to share in his resurrection from death in a new creation. Foundational to this teaching is the promise of 'a new covenant' in Jeremiah 31:31-34 and in parallel predictions in Ezekiel and Isaiah. In this valuable new study, David Peterson expounds Jeremiah's oracle and its significant influence on the way New Testament writers understand transformation in Christ. The definitive forgiveness of sins achieved by his sacrificial death brings a new knowledge or experience of God and his grace, which transforms hearts and minds, leading to a new devotion to God and obedience to his will. In this way, the people of the New Covenant are established in an eternal relationship with God and a renewed community that embraces every nation. In terms of the Bible's teaching as a whole, the New Covenant fulfils and perfects the covenant first established by God with Abraham and his offspring. It has profound implications for Christian ministry, with respect to both evangelism and the nurture of believers.

Book Synopsis"The quiet, consistent lives of Christian students drew me and began to convince me. The teaching in their Bible study groups and the assurance in their daily prayer meetings brought a sense of sober reality. They talked of faith as an objective reality, not a blind leap-in-the-dark, hoping for the best. Faith to them was something far more wonderful and real than mere believism or frightened escapism. They spoke of faith as a fact, a gift from God himself to his people to enable them to grasp and comprehend truth."Thus starts Helen Roseveare's search for spiritual understanding of the world around her - a world that she was to have a significant impact on once her new faith led her to Africa.Dr. Helen Roseveare has led an exciting life, dealing with people in the depths of their despair - and at their most joyous. Christian Focus Publications Ltd Finally Alive
Book SynopsisWhen Jesus said to Nicodemus, ‘You must be born again’, the devout and learned religious leader was unsure what Jesus meant. It would seem nothing has changed. Today ‘born again Christians’ fill churches that are seen as ineffectual at best, and even characterised by the ‘mosaic’ generation as ‘unchristian’. The term ‘born again’ has been devalued both in society and in the church. Those claiming to be ‘born again’ live lives that are indistinguishable from those who don’t; they sin the same, embrace injustice the same, covet the same, do almost everything the same. Being ‘born again’ is now defined by what people say they believe. The New Testament however defines Christians very differently. “When Jesus said to Nicodemus, “You must be born again” (John 3:7), he was not sharing interesting and unimportant information. He was leading him to eternal life… If he does that for you (or if he already has), then you are (or you will be) truly, invincibly, finally alive.” John Piper Trade ReviewFinally Alive: What Happens When We Are Born Again by John Piper is a marvellous description of what the Bible says it means to be born again and the life which flows from this new birth. This book is worth reading for the first chapter alone. Piper shows us how far apart the world-view of being born again and actual biblical truth has drifted in recent years. He writes: 'The term born again is very precious and very crucial in the Bible. So our main concern is to know what God intends when the Bible uses this language, so that by his grace we may experience it and help others to do the same...The beauty and glory of Christ and the gospel shine out of every page. Finally Alive is dense yet readable, challenging, encouraging and refreshing." -- Julie Ferguson, Gilcomston South Church, Aberdeen... simply terrific. Finally Alive begins with Christ and ends with preaching Christ. It certainly moved me to keep doing that. -- The Briefing Magazine"Classic Piper—crystal clear exposition and a must read." -- Alistair Begg, Parkside Church, Chagrin Falls, Ohio (Senior Pastor, Parkside Church, Chagrin Falls, Ohio)"Many will be thankful that John Piper is here addressing the key need of our times. Every awakening begins with the renewed discovery of Christ's teaching on the new birth. Here is that amazing teaching in lucid yet comprehensive form; with a relevance to readers worldwide." -- Iain Murray ( Co-Founder of Banner of Truth, Edinburgh, Scotland)John Piper has done it again... with consumate skill, sets forth the Biblical doctrine of the new birth in all its magnificence and radical impact on lives that were formerly without form and void. -- New Frontiers Magazine"This is an excellent book. It combines the virtues of clarity and comprehensiveness, maintaining lucidity withut skimping on truth or avoiding difficulty. It is a clarion call to get this essential doctrine right - for our own sakes, and for the sakes of our churches, our friends, and those who follow after us." -- Banner of Truth Magazine"It is an incisive examination of a topic of profound importance. I think it represents Piper at his very best as an author...Piper's tone is gracious and compassionate throughout this book. He shows the heart of a pastor from the first page to the last. But he also shows the skill of a theologian and the passion of a prophet...I cannot recommend this book too highly. I really believe it is Piper's best." -- Challies.com (Author, ‘Seasons of Sorrow’)"I cannot too strongly celebrate the publication of this book. Owing in part to several decades of dispute over justification and how a person is set right with God, we have tended to neglect another component of conversion no less important. Conversion under the terms of the new covenant is more than a matter of position and status in Christ, though never less: it includes miraculous Spirit-given transformation, something immeasurably beyond mere human resolution. It is new birth; it makes us new creatures; it demonstrates that the gospel is the power of God unto salvation. All the creedal orthodoxy in the world cannot replace it. The reason why "You must be born again" is so important is that you must be born again." -- D. A. Carson, Trinity Evangelical Divinity School, Deerfield, Illinois (Emeritus Professor of New Testament, Trinity Evangelical Divinity School, Deerfield, Illinois)This is the most biblically grounded and theologically solid treatment of the new birth that you'll ever read. -- Sam Storms (Lead Pastor, Bridgeway Church, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma)"When I was a boy my grandmother asked me, ‘Have you been born again?' Though I didn't understand what she meant at the time, that question led to my conversion to Christ. In this wonderful book, Pastor John Piper rescues the term ‘born again' from the abuse and overuse to which it is subject in our culture today. This is a fresh presentation of the evangelical doctrine of the new birth, a work filled with theological insight and pastoral wisdom." -- Timothy George, Dean of Beeson Divinity School, Samford University, Birmingham, Alabama (Founding Dean of Beeson Divinity School, Samford University, Birmingham, Alabama)That prolific author John Piper has done it again. We dare not allow the new birth to be lost in the mists of our activity and emphasis. Often we hear sports commentators say that a certain mature sportsman has been 'born again' meaning that he is having another season of success following a dark period. The new birth should never be regarded as merely 'having another go'.John Piper, with consummate skill, sets forth the Biblical doctrine of the new birth in all its magnificence and radical impact on lives that were formerly without form and void. -- Founder of New Frontiers and well known Bible Teacher (Founder of Newfrontiers and well-known Bible Teacher, London)"Piper sets the record straight on this oft neglected Christian truth by clearly telling us what the Bible teaches us about the New Birth: what it is, why we need it, how it comes about, what are its effects and how we can help others to be born again. This is not a book of dry doctrine. On the contrary, it is a book that leads to self-examination and God exaltation. I simply loved this book and now rank it as my favourite of Piper's and would highly recommend it to others." -- Barnabus, Sovereign Grace Fellowship of Canada"An accurate and scriptural explanation of what the new birth really comprises is a most pressing need for the modern church. Finally Alive, by John Piper, fulfills that need admirably. In his book, Piper explains just what it means to be born again, and shows how the scriptural teaching on that subject is designed to give all glory to God, and to cast us in utter dependence upon him." -- Nathan Pitchford Reformed Books.Net"For those curious about the Christian faith to those deeply committed to Christ and his ways, come read and behold the glory of any and every sinner's only hope—the miracle of the new birth that brings forth new life in Christ that will never end." -- Bruce Ware, Professor of Christian Theology, The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, Louisville, Kentucky (Professor of Christian Theology, The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, Louisville, Kentucky & author of ‘Big Truths for Young Hearts’)"Have I been born again? is not a question to be answered hastily. In this book, Piper strips away our complacency, arguing that many people falsely believe they are Christians. By examining the Bible's teaching on the new birth, he shows us how to be certain our faith is genuine. Because no issue could be more critical, I believe this is the most important book Piper has written." -- Adrian Warnock, blogger (Author of Raised with Christ and Hope Reborn and prolific blogger at adrianwarnock.com )"Expository and practical, this rich survey of New Testament teaching explores the nature of the new birth and the life which flows from it. Full of refreshment and encouragement, it reveals more deeply the glory of Christ and the gospel and motivates a renewed commitment to live out this good news and share it with others." -- David Jackman, President of The Proclamation Trust, London (Past President, The Proclamation Trust, London)"Regeneration, or new birth, meaning simply the new you through, with, in, and under Christ, is a largely neglected theme today, but this fine set of sermons, criss-crossing the New Testament data with great precision, goes far to fill the gap. Highly recommended." -- J .I. Packer, Professor of Theology, Regent College, Vancouver, Canada ((1926–2020), Board of Governors’ Professor of Theology, Regent College, Vancouver, Canada)"Nothing could be more eternally important than Christian people knowing what the Bible teaches about the new birth and knowing that they have experienced it. One wonders why it's taken so long for a book on the new birth to be written! But now it has and I pray every reader rejoices in God for the rich beauties of Christ Jesus so compellingly shared in its pages." -- Thabiti Anyabwile, Pastor, First Baptist Church, Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands (Pastor, Anacostia River Church, Washington, D.C.)"Theologically thorough and yet heart-warmingly pastoral and practical, this important book should help God's people to value the remarkable status and responsibility of being ‘born again.'" -- Richard Cunningham, Director of Universities and Colleges Christian Fellowship (UCCF), United Kingdom (Director of Universities and Colleges Christian Fellowship (UCCF), United Kingdom)This book is an invaluable asset to the church. It should be read and its message spread! Piper takes every reader by the hand and leads them through the material in a way that ensures those who are new to it all will not feel out of their depth. At the same time, those who have been through it before are guaranteed to either see things they have not noticed before, or see what they do know in new light. -- The Monthly Record- Free Church of Scotland Magazine (Magazine of the Free Church of Scotland)

Canterbury Press Norwich A Life-Giving Way: A contemplative commentary on
Book SynopsisAround the year 500 St Benedict wrote a short guide for a small community who wanted to live together the balanced life of body, mind and spirit. The Rule of St Benedict became not only the foundational guide for monastic life in the West, but remains a potent spiritual resource that speaks authentically to countless individuals today. Fr Laurence Freeman OSB has described the text as the most important document for Christian living after the Bible. In this reflective commentary, Esther de Waal recognises the profoundly scriptural emphasis of St Benedict’s writings. She shows how his Rule may be read personally and prayerfully by people such as herself seeking practical encouragement and support in their following of Christ.Trade Review‘Esther de Waal reminds us that St Benedict was, in fact, a lay person. So the value of this book is that Esther is a lay person writing for lay people about what is the core of Benedictine spirituality. I believe she has done something very important for all of us.’ -- Cardinal Basil Hume‘Through the writings of Esther de Waal over the years, many people have been led into the heart and mind of St Benedict... This new edition brings out the overall shape of Benedict’s Rule with refreshing clarity. Monks, nuns and laity will all enjoy the insights of this thoughtful commentary.’ -- Christopher Jamison

Canterbury Press Norwich Incarnational Ministry: Being with the church
Book SynopsisThe bestselling writer and popular broadcaster Sam Wells reflects theologically and practically on the essence of discipleship and Christian ministry today. Those in ministry, like Jesus, are called to the task of ‘being with’: with God, with the church, with the created world and those who live in it. It challenges readers to deeper discipleship and more vital ministry as they explore what it means to be with the troubled, the hurt, the afflicted and the dying – and all who are embraced by the Church’s incarnational ministry.Trade Review‘At the interface of critical academic reflection and faithful church theology, we have no better voice than that of Sam Wells. He invites us to rethink, from the ground up, our abiding temptation to condescending help and service to others. He compellingly renders a more excellent way toward the transformative with.’ -- Walter Brueggemann
