Christian Focus Publications Ltd Finally Alive
Book SynopsisWhen Jesus said to Nicodemus, ‘You must be born again’, the devout and learned religious leader was unsure what Jesus meant. It would seem nothing has changed. Today ‘born again Christians’ fill churches that are seen as ineffectual at best, and even characterised by the ‘mosaic’ generation as ‘unchristian’. The term ‘born again’ has been devalued both in society and in the church. Those claiming to be ‘born again’ live lives that are indistinguishable from those who don’t; they sin the same, embrace injustice the same, covet the same, do almost everything the same. Being ‘born again’ is now defined by what people say they believe. The New Testament however defines Christians very differently. “When Jesus said to Nicodemus, “You must be born again” (John 3:7), he was not sharing interesting and unimportant information. He was leading him to eternal life… If he does that for you (or if he already has), then you are (or you will be) truly, invincibly, finally alive.” John Piper Trade ReviewFinally Alive: What Happens When We Are Born Again by John Piper is a marvellous description of what the Bible says it means to be born again and the life which flows from this new birth. This book is worth reading for the first chapter alone. Piper shows us how far apart the world-view of being born again and actual biblical truth has drifted in recent years. He writes: 'The term born again is very precious and very crucial in the Bible. So our main concern is to know what God intends when the Bible uses this language, so that by his grace we may experience it and help others to do the same...The beauty and glory of Christ and the gospel shine out of every page. Finally Alive is dense yet readable, challenging, encouraging and refreshing." -- Julie Ferguson, Gilcomston South Church, Aberdeen... simply terrific. Finally Alive begins with Christ and ends with preaching Christ. It certainly moved me to keep doing that. -- The Briefing Magazine"Classic Piper—crystal clear exposition and a must read." -- Alistair Begg, Parkside Church, Chagrin Falls, Ohio (Senior Pastor, Parkside Church, Chagrin Falls, Ohio)"Many will be thankful that John Piper is here addressing the key need of our times. Every awakening begins with the renewed discovery of Christ's teaching on the new birth. Here is that amazing teaching in lucid yet comprehensive form; with a relevance to readers worldwide." -- Iain Murray ( Co-Founder of Banner of Truth, Edinburgh, Scotland)John Piper has done it again... with consumate skill, sets forth the Biblical doctrine of the new birth in all its magnificence and radical impact on lives that were formerly without form and void. -- New Frontiers Magazine"This is an excellent book. It combines the virtues of clarity and comprehensiveness, maintaining lucidity withut skimping on truth or avoiding difficulty. It is a clarion call to get this essential doctrine right - for our own sakes, and for the sakes of our churches, our friends, and those who follow after us." -- Banner of Truth Magazine"It is an incisive examination of a topic of profound importance. I think it represents Piper at his very best as an author...Piper's tone is gracious and compassionate throughout this book. He shows the heart of a pastor from the first page to the last. But he also shows the skill of a theologian and the passion of a prophet...I cannot recommend this book too highly. I really believe it is Piper's best." -- Challies.com (Author, ‘Seasons of Sorrow’)"I cannot too strongly celebrate the publication of this book. Owing in part to several decades of dispute over justification and how a person is set right with God, we have tended to neglect another component of conversion no less important. Conversion under the terms of the new covenant is more than a matter of position and status in Christ, though never less: it includes miraculous Spirit-given transformation, something immeasurably beyond mere human resolution. It is new birth; it makes us new creatures; it demonstrates that the gospel is the power of God unto salvation. All the creedal orthodoxy in the world cannot replace it. The reason why "You must be born again" is so important is that you must be born again." -- D. A. Carson, Trinity Evangelical Divinity School, Deerfield, Illinois (Emeritus Professor of New Testament, Trinity Evangelical Divinity School, Deerfield, Illinois)This is the most biblically grounded and theologically solid treatment of the new birth that you'll ever read. -- Sam Storms (Lead Pastor, Bridgeway Church, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma)"When I was a boy my grandmother asked me, ‘Have you been born again?' Though I didn't understand what she meant at the time, that question led to my conversion to Christ. In this wonderful book, Pastor John Piper rescues the term ‘born again' from the abuse and overuse to which it is subject in our culture today. This is a fresh presentation of the evangelical doctrine of the new birth, a work filled with theological insight and pastoral wisdom." -- Timothy George, Dean of Beeson Divinity School, Samford University, Birmingham, Alabama (Founding Dean of Beeson Divinity School, Samford University, Birmingham, Alabama)That prolific author John Piper has done it again. We dare not allow the new birth to be lost in the mists of our activity and emphasis. Often we hear sports commentators say that a certain mature sportsman has been 'born again' meaning that he is having another season of success following a dark period. The new birth should never be regarded as merely 'having another go'.John Piper, with consummate skill, sets forth the Biblical doctrine of the new birth in all its magnificence and radical impact on lives that were formerly without form and void. -- Founder of New Frontiers and well known Bible Teacher (Founder of Newfrontiers and well-known Bible Teacher, London)"Piper sets the record straight on this oft neglected Christian truth by clearly telling us what the Bible teaches us about the New Birth: what it is, why we need it, how it comes about, what are its effects and how we can help others to be born again. This is not a book of dry doctrine. On the contrary, it is a book that leads to self-examination and God exaltation. I simply loved this book and now rank it as my favourite of Piper's and would highly recommend it to others." -- Barnabus, Sovereign Grace Fellowship of Canada"An accurate and scriptural explanation of what the new birth really comprises is a most pressing need for the modern church. Finally Alive, by John Piper, fulfills that need admirably. In his book, Piper explains just what it means to be born again, and shows how the scriptural teaching on that subject is designed to give all glory to God, and to cast us in utter dependence upon him." -- Nathan Pitchford Reformed Books.Net"For those curious about the Christian faith to those deeply committed to Christ and his ways, come read and behold the glory of any and every sinner's only hope—the miracle of the new birth that brings forth new life in Christ that will never end." -- Bruce Ware, Professor of Christian Theology, The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, Louisville, Kentucky (Professor of Christian Theology, The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, Louisville, Kentucky & author of ‘Big Truths for Young Hearts’)"Have I been born again? is not a question to be answered hastily. In this book, Piper strips away our complacency, arguing that many people falsely believe they are Christians. By examining the Bible's teaching on the new birth, he shows us how to be certain our faith is genuine. Because no issue could be more critical, I believe this is the most important book Piper has written." -- Adrian Warnock, blogger (Author of Raised with Christ and Hope Reborn and prolific blogger at adrianwarnock.com )"Expository and practical, this rich survey of New Testament teaching explores the nature of the new birth and the life which flows from it. Full of refreshment and encouragement, it reveals more deeply the glory of Christ and the gospel and motivates a renewed commitment to live out this good news and share it with others." -- David Jackman, President of The Proclamation Trust, London (Past President, The Proclamation Trust, London)"Regeneration, or new birth, meaning simply the new you through, with, in, and under Christ, is a largely neglected theme today, but this fine set of sermons, criss-crossing the New Testament data with great precision, goes far to fill the gap. Highly recommended." -- J .I. Packer, Professor of Theology, Regent College, Vancouver, Canada ((1926–2020), Board of Governors’ Professor of Theology, Regent College, Vancouver, Canada)"Nothing could be more eternally important than Christian people knowing what the Bible teaches about the new birth and knowing that they have experienced it. One wonders why it's taken so long for a book on the new birth to be written! But now it has and I pray every reader rejoices in God for the rich beauties of Christ Jesus so compellingly shared in its pages." -- Thabiti Anyabwile, Pastor, First Baptist Church, Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands (Pastor, Anacostia River Church, Washington, D.C.)"Theologically thorough and yet heart-warmingly pastoral and practical, this important book should help God's people to value the remarkable status and responsibility of being ‘born again.'" -- Richard Cunningham, Director of Universities and Colleges Christian Fellowship (UCCF), United Kingdom (Director of Universities and Colleges Christian Fellowship (UCCF), United Kingdom)This book is an invaluable asset to the church. It should be read and its message spread! Piper takes every reader by the hand and leads them through the material in a way that ensures those who are new to it all will not feel out of their depth. At the same time, those who have been through it before are guaranteed to either see things they have not noticed before, or see what they do know in new light. -- The Monthly Record- Free Church of Scotland Magazine (Magazine of the Free Church of Scotland)

Canterbury Press Norwich When God is Silent: Divine language beyond words
Book SynopsisAn enduring classic from award-winning writer Barbara Brown Taylor, and a timeless meditation for all who thirst for a God who often seems to be silent. It considers the limitations of the language we have at our disposal to speak about God; the stupendous responsibility upon anyone who attempts to speak for God, in preaching or pastoral encounter; and the torrents of words coming at us from all directions in contemporary culture that can drown out the messages we really need to hear. In this land of linguistic superabundance, Barbara Brown Taylor argues persuasively for simplicity and economy when speaking of God. She reflects on the eloquence of Jesus’ silences and how we can find ways of bringing tired, old language about God back to vivid, powerful life.Trade Review'Her concise, pithy and challenging prose is evidence that she is practicing what she preaches: that Christian pastors take more care with the words they use.' -- Kathleen Norris'If there is one book I would want every person of faith aware of the fragile contours of language to read, this is it. Never surrendering a good question for a mere answer, it reverences both the disclosures of silence and the potential of words to form, more than inform, the human soul. Of all Barbara Brown Taylor's wonderful books, this is the one for my desert island.' -- Mark Oakley'This book would...make an ideal basis for personal reflection during Advent or Lent' -- Revd Mark Brosnan * Magnet *

Canterbury Press Norwich Julian of Norwich: A contemporary translation
This is a fresh and contemporary rendering of one of the most loved and influential spiritual texts of all time. It brings alive the message and spirituality of this great 14th-century mystic to 21st century readers. At the age of 30, Julian of Norwich, a contemporary of Chaucer, was suffering a severe illness and believed she was on her deathbed. She had a series of intense visions of Jesus and recovered. Julian wrote down the narration of the visions shortly after they occurred and expanded on them 20 to 30 years later in what became the first book written in English by a woman. Her message remains strikingly relevant today: that failure is an opportunity to learn and grow that God's love has nothing to do with retribution and everything to do with compassion in spite of appearances, all is well.

Canterbury Press Norwich The Luminous Web: Faith, science and the
Book SynopsisWith her customary grace, intelligence and wit, Barbara Brown Taylor wonders why science and faith have become polarized in the popular imagination. She explores what quantum physics, the new biology and chaos theory can teach people of faith and why scientists sound like poets and why physicists use the language of imagination, ambiguity, and mystery that is also found in scripture. In explaining why the church should care about the new insights of science, Taylor suggests ways we might close the gap between spirit and matter, between the sacred and the secular, and celebrate our shared life in the “web of creation” where nothing is without consequence, where all things coexist, where faith and science together seek to discover the same truths about the universe.

It makes for a captivating read and an even more infectious life!" - Rachel Gardner, Founder, Romance Academy "The Virgin Monologues is a wonderfully courageous ride through love and life. I found Carrie's honest communication about what it's like to navigate the joyous and sometimes perilous journey though relationships refreshing. In her book Carrie has invited us to not only do better in relationships but to be a better people. I know this book may seem, on the surface, to be geared towards women. However, men will find it fascinating and challenging and will probably be better men for reading it. A must read!" - Gabe Valenzuela, 2nd Year Overseer, Bethel School of Supernatural Ministry "In this book Carrie reminds us that what is most important is actually understanding and living out of a place of knowing who we are in Christ, and how that needs to be at the foundation of how we see ourselves. When we do it will transform how we do relationships - single people or married." - Nici Cahusac

Book SynopsisThe quiet path winds gently uphill through leafy forests and beside a gurgling stream. The birdsong in the trees matches the joy in your heart as you stroll along. Your backpack doesn't feel too heavy and you're enjoying the pleasant shade from the warm sun. Then you reach a fork in the path. You pause. Should you follow the track which runs alongside the stream? It looks pleasant, a lot like the path you've just been following. Or should you turn to the right? This one is narrower, rougher, and steeper. It leads out of the forest, towards the rocky, grey mountain. Both paths lead uphill, but you know that the mountain one will test you and try you. You will need to climb, to push yourself to your limit. The temperature will fluctuate between extremes of scorching heat and chilling cold. Your backpack will begin to feel like a heavy burden. The gradient may be so steep in places that you will find yourself clinging by your fingernails. But the higher you climb, the purer the air will be, and the more magnificent the view. At some point, you will haul yourself over that final ledge and find yourself in breath-taking wonder at the awesome vista before you. The arduous, gruelling, and oftentimes dangerous climb will have been worth it all. When someone asks, Would you choose the same path if you were to do it over? your answer will be a resounding Yes!The Christian life is a lot like climbing a mountain. When we trust Christ for salvation we begin on the gentle slopes.

John Ritchie Ltd 8 Kingdom Parables
Book SynopsisThis is the third of a series, dealing with familiar Bible topics. Craig first covered The Ten Commandments and then The Nine Beatitudes. He now covers The Eight Kingdom Parables. Eight Kingdom Parables! Are we not accustomed to speaking of The Seven Parables of the Kingdom in Matthew 13? Craig contends that the reference to the householder at v.52 should be included, and so he speaks of eight parables. Although basically doctrinal, the book is incisive in the challenge it presents regarding our commitment to sow seed. Are we employing every avenue open to us to communicate the Word of God? Stress is laid on the fact that it is the only method whereby souls are reached for the Kingdom. Craig's expositions and conclusions are well backed up with a multitude of Bible references that demonstrate his wide knowledge of the Scriptures, even those parts that we might regard as obscure. In his introduction, Craig suggests that each chapter of his book can be read in five minutes. We recommend that you devote just a little longer to it! If you are going to digest all that is there, and follow up on the Bible references, it will need some diligent thought. We do trust that the little volume will be really enlightening to those of you who are exploring these things for the first time, and an encouraging refresher course for those of you who have known them for many years.

What about your children and grandchildren and the young people connected with the local church? Join with me in trying to put many on the road to an understanding of the Scriptures by placing this little volume in their hands.

John Ritchie Ltd Joy in the Desert: 50 Years of Gospel Blessing in
Book SynopsisWith glorious sunsets, incredible wildlife and peace-loving people, you can almost understand why someone would leave the comforts of home and the security of successful careers, for a life in Botswana. Joy in the Desert tells the true story of a small band of devoted Christians who did just that, moved to an unknown country, with no guaranteed salary, and how God blessed them for over fifty years! This volume aims to tell the true story of how the lives of men and women, and boys and girls, in Botswana have been transformed by the power of the gospel of Christ. It has been our joy to witness God's blessing over many years in this desert land, and it has been an honour to serve Him here. Memories fade quickly, but even if we had perfect recall, this brief record must be regarded as incomplete. While we may readily tell of what men and women have done, none of us can discern the full picture of what God has done or is doing. He often works behind the scenes. Then again, God will continue to work, long after our labours are over. This volume represents a partial record at a point in time, but the full story awaits a future day of heavenly review. The men and women whose service for the Lord is described within these pages have one thing in common: they have taken the Word of God to be their only guide. For just over 50 years they have worked unitedly, seeking to follow the practice of the early Christians, even in these challenging times. They share the conviction that the first-century principles of the early church still work today.

John Ritchie Ltd A Simple Guide to Worship: Simple Guide

The author gives good guidance on how we should prepare for worship, and provides case studies of examples of acts of worship that took place in Scripture. Some chapters are devoted to explaining the institution of the Lord's Supper and explain the reasons why we should follow this command given to us by the Lord Jesus Himself.Whilst this book is not an exhaustive study, it will be a challenge to those interested in deepening their understanding and will help reconnect to the real purpose and meaning of worship.
