Wordsworth Editions Ltd Black Beauty
Book SynopsisBlack Beauty is a perennial children's favourite, one which has never been out of print since its publication in 1877. It is a moralistic tale of the life of the horse related in the form of an autobiography, describing the world through the eyes of the creature. In taking this anthropomorphic approach, the author Anna Sewell broke new literary ground and her effective storytelling ability makes it very easy for the reader to accept the premise that a horse is recounting the exploits in the narrative. The gentle thoroughbred, Black Beauty, is raised with care and is treated well until a vicious groom injures him. The damaged horse is then sold to various masters at whose hands he experiences cruelty and neglect. After many unpleasant episodes, including one where he becomes a painfully overworked cab horse in London, Black Beauty finally canters towards a happy ending. Although Anna Sewell's classic is set firmly in the Victorian period, its message is universal and timeless: animals will serve humans well if they are treated with consideration and kindness. There have been many film and television adaptations of the story, but it is only the novel that captures the authentic voice of the central character.

Andersen Press Ltd Tadpole's Promise
Book Synopsis"Where the willow meets the water, a tadpole met a caterpillar. They gazed into each other's tiny eyes and fell in love. 'Promise me that you will never change', the caterpillar says." And foolishly, the tadpole promises. But as the seasons pass and he matures, his legs grow, and then his arms - and what happens to his beautiful rainbow friend? As he sits on his lily pad, digesting the butterfly he has just eaten, he little realises that now he will never know!Trade Review"Unforgettable." * Guardian *"I love this book so much" * Giovanna Fletcher *"Breaks the mould in form as well as content." * The Sunday Times *"Beginning with pages that open vertically instead of horizontally, this tongue-in-cheek tale takes a typical love story and sets it squarely and amusingly on end. Ross's vibrantly hued pen-and-ink and watercolour cartoons depict the edge of the pond where a caterpillar and a tadpole meet and fall in love. . . Willis strikes the perfect balance between the deadpan telling and the humorously overblown dialogue shared by the star-crossed pair, while the artwork masterfully enhances each and every nuance." * The School Library Journal *"For nourishment of grammatical and contextual awareness, a perfect book for reading aloud is Tony Ross' and Jeanne Willis' wicked little love story - Tadpole's Promise. It starts eloquently and promisingly: "Where the willow meets the water a tadpole met a caterpillar. They gazed into each other's tiny eyes... and fell in love. She was his beautiful rainbow and he was her shiny black pearl." But then the tadpole promises the caterpillar he will never change thus ensuring the most captive of reading audiences as they watch the inevitable changes that unfold. The final gasp-making twist (student teachers have shrieked!) is all the funnier for being juxtaposed against such poetic language." -- Alison Kelly * Books for Keeps *

Book SynopsisThe essential guide to sleep from award-winning teenage well-being expert Nicola Morgan, author of bestselling Blame My Brain, The Teenage Guide to Stress and The Teenage Guide to Friends.Late nights, addictive technology and minds racing with exam stress and friendship worries: it''s no wonder the teenage stereotype is tired eyes and sleeping through the weekend. Just like adults, teenagers are sleeping less now than ever before, yet sleep is crucial to our health and well-being. Internationally renowned expert on the teenage brain, Nicola Morgan, tackles this essential subject asking why teenagers so desperately need a good night''s sleep, exploring what a lack of sleep does to their developing brains, and explaining how to have the best sleep possible.Authoritative, accessible and informed by the latest scientific evidence, Nicola Morgan writes a fascinating and helpful guide for both teenagers and adults alike.Trade ReviewEngaging and user friendly, it also gets to grips with conundrums such as: do power naps work? Can some people manage on very little sleep? And how much sleep do we need at different ages? * The Independent *The tone is accessible but never condescending; Morgan has empathy for young people and is unafraid to note the hypocrisy of adults when it comes to “sleep hygiene” measures such as avoiding screens before bedtime. She’s also careful to note when the evidence is limited, or to explain that “averages” refer to statistically likely, rather than definite, outcomes.
