Child's Play International Ltd For the Love of Lettuce
Book SynopsisTwo caterpillars approach life in very different ways. Zip likes to plan, but doesn’t like change, while Parsley is happy to live in the moment. How will they cope in the face of sudden and unexpected change? This hilarious adventure is a lively introduction to adaptability, problem-solving, resilience, and mutual understanding.Trade ReviewCaterpillar pals Parsley and Zip are opposite in everything. Parsley and Zip hatched on the same leaf, on the same day, but while Parsley lives in the moment, Zip plans every detail of their lives. Zip grows increasingly stressed over Parsley’s lack of concern. One day, they run out of lettuce. Ever the well-prepared caterpillar, Zip has a plan to find more lettuce, but it involves facing some scary chickens. As they journey toward the chicken-guarded lettuce, Parsley stops to play, eat, and rest, savoring the trip, while Zip urges his laid-back friend to keep up. A frustrated Zip has had enough and decides things should change. The next day, something has changed—Parsley has transformed into a cocoon! Nothing Zip does makes his friend react, and Zip is sad that he doesn’t have a solution. Trying to think of what Parsley would do, Zip finally starts to enjoy life, but the chickens are still around—and they’re hungry. Zip can’t think of a plan, but Parsley, now a butterfly, appears and saves Zip. This amusing tale conveys the message that flexibility is important in friendship, though it might have been stronger if the duo had learned from each other instead of Zip learning to be more like Parsley. Still, the book is funny and sweet. Much of the humor lies in the cute illustrations, with comical expressions from the two caterpillars. (This book was reviewed digitally.) An endearing friendship tale that’s a little one-sided yet still brimming with kid appeal. (Picture book. 3-6) * Kirkus Reviews *Zip and Parsley are two caterpillars with very different personalities. Zip likes plans and routines, while Parsley loves to live in the moment. When Parsley unthinkingly chomps through the last of their lettuce, Zip has a plan for finding more, which contains an element of danger. A leafy green garden is just on the other side of a nearby fence, but it’s home to several free-range, bug-eating chickens. Zip and Parsley begin their journey, with Parsley making frequent stops to eat and play, much to Zip’s annoyance. The next morning dawns with the pair at the fence—only Parsley has disappeared into a chrysalis. This was not part of Zip’s plan! Zip is sad to lose his friend, and when his garden exploration is cut short by the arrival of the chickens, Zip must think on his toes like Parsley would. Happily (though it’s scientifically suspect), Parsley hatches and soars to the rescue just in time. Dicmas’ entertaining illustrations employ cool colors and lots of laughs as this odd couple learns to embrace change and personal difference. * Booklist Online *

Workman Publishing Beautiful Oops
Book SynopsisWe all make mistakes. But little kids sometimes have trouble dealing with their mistakes, whether it's a piece of artwork they've torn by accident, or juice they've spilled on their favorite drawing. In this book, every page begins with a 'mistake' that ultimately unravels, lifts out, or pulls up to become a surprising work of beauty.Trade ReviewA pleasingly tactile exploration of the possibilities inherent in mistakes. "A torn piece of paper... is just the beginning!" Spills, folded paper, drips of paint, smudges and smears they "all can make magic appear." An increasingly complex series of scenarios celebrates random accidents, encouraging artistic experimentation rather than discouragement. The folded-over paper can be a penguin's head; a torn piece of newsprint can turn into a smiling dog with a little application of paint; a hot-chocolate stain can become a bog for a frog. Thanks to a telescoping pop-up, a hole is filled with nearly limitless possibilities. The interactive elements work beautifully with the photo-collaged "mistakes," never overwhelming the intent with showiness. Saltzberg's trademark cartoon animals provide a sweetly childlike counterpoint to the artful scribbles and smears of gloppy paint. A festive invitation to creative liberation. - "Kirkus Reviews"

When Mary sees her grandmother accused of witchcraft and hanged for the crime, she is silently hurried to safety by an unknown woman. The woman gives her tools to keep the record of her days – paper and ink. Mary is taken to a boat in Plymouth and from there sails to the New World where she hopes to make a new life among the pilgrims. But old superstitions die hard and soon Mary finds that she, like her grandmother, is the victim of ignorance and stupidity, and once more she faces important choices to ensure her survival. With a vividly evoked environment and characters skilfully and patiently drawn, this is a powerful literary achievement by Celia Rees that is utterly engrossing from start to finish.Trade ReviewI've saved the best for last. The prolific, erudite and consistently brilliant Celia Rees is justly renowned for her dizzyingly inventive plots, redolent of everyone from Angela Carter to Shakespeare. Sovay and Witch Child are two of her best-known books in the younger market, but she has written countless more, all equally breathtaking * Guardian *This is a powerful, absorbing and unusual novel * The Bookseller *The sort of historial novel eleven and twelve year olds will gobble up at a sitting * Nina Bawden *A gripping, thrilling novel that transports you to a time of paranoia and witch hunts. Witch Child and the sequel Sorceress are historical fiction at its very best * Waterstones' Guide to Kids' Books *Celia Rees herself, has always been a formidable force in the world of YA […] It’s important, as well as tremendously good entertainment. […] I will always put Celia and her books on the top rung of YA. The best books are not always those published in the last few months * BookWitch *Celia Rees is one of Britain's foremost writers for teenagers * Playdays and Runaways *
