Walker Books Ltd Jane Eyre: Abridged for Young Readers
Book Synopsis“I am no bird; and no net ensnares me; I am a free human being with an independent will.”As a young orphan, Jane Eyre is thrown upon the mercy of an aunt and cousins who are anything but merciful, and when they send her away to an austere boarding school for charity cases, it seems she will never be allowed to forget her humble beginnings. However, Jane has a quiet inner strength and resourcefulness, and when she take on a role as governess at Thornfield Hall, she quickly gains both the affection and respect not only of her young pupil, but also the child's guardian, the fierce and brooding Mr Rochester.Perhaps Jane has finally found the love for which she has always longed? But Mr Rochester has a dark secret. A secret that will rock Thornfield Hall to its very foundations…Trade ReviewLawrence’s pared-back, heartfelt retelling distils the richness and drama of Brontë’s masterpiece into a 9+ novel that’s both satisfying in its own right and a springboard to the original. Her introduction also touches on the book ’s treatment of mental health and people of colour; a subtle nudge to young readers to think critically, even as they “wallow in Charlotte Brontë’s gorgeous language. * The Guardian *With great skill, Lawrence helps readers fall for Jane’s determination and Rochester’s dark, brooding presence, and although the story is abridged, all the passion and drama of Brontë’s original remains. A triumph. -- Charlotte Eyre * The Bookseller *Patrice Lawrence’s abridgement for eight-to-12-year-olds manages to do justice to Brontë’s heroine – and the so-called ‘troubling’ passages...if this highly readable version can whet their young appetites for the Victorian classics, then its purpose will have been well served. -- Emily Bearn * The Daily Telegraph *One of the highlights of my reading year! I absolutely adored this retelling of Jane Eyre and would urge readers of all ages to buy it. I was initially a little skeptical about how such a classic could be rewritten whilst retaining the atmosphere of the original but oh my goodness Patrice Lawrence has nailed this. The way in which she cleverly explains aspects of Victorian living to young modern readers whilst maintaining the pace and tension of the story is perfect. The atmosphere of the cold, harsh settings created are as close to the original as they can be and many times I forgot that this was a retelling. Magnificent! * NetGalley Reviewer *This wonderful abridged version is a perfect introduction to classics for younger readers and it is so accessible and understandable whilst skillfully keeping the main points from the original novel… The atmosphere of the original text is still visible in this shortened version… This abridged version of Jane Eyre will make a wonderful addition to any upper primary school library/classroom and be a great class read. * Little Blog of Library Treasures *

Floris Books An Illustrated Treasury of Scottish Castle
Book SynopsisDark dragons, ghostly pipers, rude goblins and sly wizards -- discover the legends that dwell within the ancient castles of Scotland. This highly anticipated book is the latest volume of much-loved Scottish tale treasuries by Carnegie-award-winning children's author Theresa Breslin and Kate Greenaway Medal-longlisted artist Kate Leiper. Explore secret passages beneath Edinburgh Castle, search for the mysterious monster of Glamis, capture the faery flag of Dunvegan, joust with knights at Stirling Castle and swim with the selkie of Eilean Donan in this sumptuous collection of tales from iconic Scottish castles. Read much-cherished and little-known legends, each illuminating the character and history of its castle, all brilliantly retold and beautifully illustrated to amuse, thrill and enchant. A wonderful gift, this is a stunning book to be treasured for a lifetime, bringing history, place and story alive for children, parents and grandparents alike.Trade Review'The castles of Scotland are storied places literally -- as we learn from Theresa Breslin's engaging narrative in An Illustrated Treasury of Scottish Castle Legends, with dramatic pictures by Kate Leiper. A map at the beginning, inset with monochrome paintings, gives us a glimpse of the real places that have given rise to fantastic yarns about goblins, dragons and the seal-creatures known as selkies, but also to human-scale tales involving faithful dogs, cow thieves and identical twins of unusual sagacity.'-- The Wall Street Journal'The book's elegant design enhances the reading experience, while the artwork creates strong, enduring images of the people and creatures in the stories. Created primarily with chalk pastels and enhanced with ink and acrylic paint, the illustrations create scenes with unusual clarity, beauty, and mystery... In a time when few new books of legends are published for children, it's a pleasure to find such a beautiful collection of riveting stories.'-- Booklist'A map of Scotland with images of the castles appears at the beginning of the book, followed by 11 tales, fluidly told and stunningly illustrated in a large format. The artwork is done in acrylic and ink with pastel on paper and adds detail and visual interest to propel readers forward. This handsome volume will be an appealing addition to libraries as both source material for programs and for individuals to read and share.'-- School Library Journal'An exciting collection of deliciously spooky legends associated with no fewer than thirteen ancient Scottish castles... [It] unfolds with luscious authentic illustrations and is told in delightful traditional style... A beautiful children's classic that will cause readers to dream hopefully of visiting all the mystical castles and sites in Scotland associated with these magical tales.'-- Midwest Book Review'Each tale is beautifully illustrated with drawings on every page done in chalk pastel on paper with occasional use of ink and acrylic paint... The tales are absolutely fascinating including dragons, Monsters (Loch Ness), Selkies, Goblins, Faeries and more. A brief history of each castle is provided before the tale providing an enriching background...'-- Youth Services Book Review'The illustrations are mesmerising... Simply stunning.'-- Catherine Rayner'A glorious collection of traditional stories. The perfect gift.'-- Vivian French'I loved Fantastic Beasts, and I'm really glad I got to read this book -- it has loads of beasts from Scotland in it, and it's amazing how many stories I didn't even know before. I'm going to ask my parents to visit all the places in the book, and I'm going to ask for the other two books like this for my birthday. The pictures are amazing, and the stories are great for reading at night. My friends like it, too!'-- Jack, age 9, for Families Glasgow'Everything you'd expect it to be. What you'd want it to be. From the wonderful cover by Kate, to every last little story by Theresa, set in different castles all over Scotland, and taking place at varying times in history... This is a great book.'-- BookwitchTable of ContentsThe Ghostly Piper of Edinburgh CastleThe Mysterious Monster in the Castle of GlamisThe Redcap Goblin of Caerlaverock CastleThe Faery Flag of Dunvegan CastleThe Wizard of Stirling CastleDoe Not Vaken Sleiping Dogs (Craigievar Castle)The Kings Three Questions (Moot Hill and Scone)The True Story of the Loch Ness Monster... Perfect for fans of Michael Morpurgo and Emma Carroll, and those looking for diverse historical fiction. July, 1941. Rosina Raja is half-Indian and half-English. She has always lived in India, so when her mother passes away and she moves to England (where it rains all the time) she is miserable and doesn’t have any friends. Finding herself in occupied France, Rosie is soon drawn into the struggle against the Nazis. With new allies and new enemies at every turn, she must help her father complete his mission, and more importantly… make sure they both get home alive.Trade ReviewGripping, such a brilliant, fresh addition to the shelf. * Emma Carroll, author of Letters from the Lighthouse *Perfect for fans of war-time historical fiction. I loved Rosie’s story. * Jasbinder Bilan, author of Asha and the Spirit Bird *A vivid and gripping, superbly told historical adventure. * Sophie Anderson, author of The House with Chicken Legs and The Girl Who Speaks Bear *Rosie Raja’s thrilling and heart-felt adventure is a triumph! It’s full of secrets and spies, bravery and betrayal, and it shines a light on the often overlooked sacrifice of Indian personnel in WW2 * Dan Smith, author of My Brother's Secret and Nisha's War *Loved Rosie Raja! A gripping, action-packed and sensitively-told historical adventure with a bold Muslim heroine who has a foot in two worlds. Another brilliant book from Sufiya Ahmed. * Rashmi Sirdeshpande, author of Never Show a T-Rex a Book and Cash *... I genuinely feared for Rosie's safety because I had really learned to love her. Her attitude, her directness, her desire to learn. I'd suggest this is a must have for any class studying the Second World War, especially as it embraces colonial history in a way that lots of WW2 literature completely misses. * Fleur Hitchcock, author of The Boy Who Flew and Murder in Midwinter *

Pikku Publishing Finn's Garden Friends
Book SynopsisNature loving Finn's life has been turned upside down by a move to the city. All he can see are dull, grey buildings. But Grandpa has a surprise in store: his allotment! By introducing Finn to his allotment, Finn reconnects with the natural world: he's amazed to discover a hibernating hedgehog, whom he befriends, and learns to care for a fox. There is, after all, nature in the city! A beautifully detailed picture book with a directory of wildlife for spotting in the story, as well as dedicated hedgehog and fox fact pages.Trade ReviewAfter the long, cold, dark days of winter, spring is always the most welcome of seasons. A time of green shoots, of new growth and renewal, and the promise of warmth and light. This year, spring has more of a significance to us than at any other time, certainly in my life. Living through a pandemic has been extremely tough for children, with so many restrictions on their everyday lives. But the one solace we have been able to provide for them has been more time spent in nature. For many children (and adults!), this will have been a huge boost to their mental and physical well-being at such a challenging time. Through my work as a Learning Manager at the Wildfowl and Wetland Trust's London Wetland Centre, I see first-hand just how positive forming a connection to the natural world is for children. Research has shown that there are profound benefits to well-being from being outside and forming a deeper empathy for the world around us. Developing this empathy will – crucially – lead to children wanting to protect the natural world and become the conservationists of the future. Books have always been a powerful tool for unlocking ideas in children, and showing them what the world has to offer. So it has been my pleasure to consult on the natural history in Rachel's story of Finn, a city boy with a love for nature. Finn's discovery of green space when all around seems grey, could be the experience of any child who lives surrounded by buildings and roads. Luckily for Finn, Grandpa Bill recognises his grandson's longings, and steps in to help. Rescue comes with visits to his wonderful allotment, where Finn finds what he needs: hedgehogs, foxes, birds and plants. A living, breathing world. Not that it's all plain sailing: it's quite a struggle for Finn to develop empathy for the fox, but in the end he learns to understand that every living thing is worth caring for! This empathy is a strong thread in Finn's Garden Friends. It is so important that children form bonds with animals, especially in the city where many children wouldn't be aware that they live alongside some fantastic creatures. In fact, our cities teem with wildlife, and there is now a strong movement to encourage urban children to explore the natural world. Many will live in areas with poor access to nature, but through improved green spaces such as allotments, children are able to experience surprising amounts of wildlife. Did you know there are over 300,000 allotments in the UK alone? They are really important habitats for urban wildlife, and great places for children to learn about cycles of growth and renewal. As children will see from Finn's story, when we look after the planet we find that it looks after us in return. We hope everyone will enjoy Finn's adventure, and take away some ideas about how to bring children and nature together! -- Paul LawstonA delightful story, beautifully illustrated, which successfully conveys the joy and wonder of spending time in nature…. a great reminder that there are wild spaces and creatures to be found, even in the most urban of settings.’ -- Dr Jess French
