Book SynopsisAfter thwarting the dastardly plans of J.P. Rickerton, Tristan Hunt is having trouble keeping his newfound talents a secret. And if undercover spies and a mysterious illness threatening to expose the secrets of camp weren't enough, reports of dying fish and disappearing sponge in the Caribbean call Tristan and his friends back into action. Will the Sea Guardians discover the source of the problem before time runs out? Can they escape the threat of an oncoming storm? Or will a betrayal from one of their own ensure it's already too late?Trade Review"The Shark Rider is one of the best yarns you'll ever read about the ocean, marine life, and a group of intrepid adventurous teens. They face exciting ocean challenges while working alongside a wide variety of sea creatures with amazing abilities. In fact, when I was given a pre-publication copy by Dr. Prager after a talk, a young teen tried to wrestle it from me saying, 'I need it. I can't wait for it to be published.' He was right. Don't miss it and the continuing exploits of Tristan Hunt and his friends."--Jerry Schubel, Ph.D., President and CEO, Aquarium of the Pacific "Tristan Hunt is back in this exciting sequel to The Shark Whisperer (2014), where the clumsy kid learned that he was meant to be a hero to endangered sea creatures. ... This is a great follow-up to Prager's first Sea Guardians novel, sure to hook more fans."--Booklist "Tristan, with his talent for conversing with sharks, and his marine biologist creator, author Ellen Prager, use this fascinating plot to explore ecological avenues, proving that even kids can have an awesome skill that can save the planet."--Foreword Reviews "What do you get when you mix teenagers who can communicate with fish, a shrimp with anger management issues, a shark who can't stand the sight of blood, and an evil villain? You get the second book in Dr. Ellen Prager's amazingly imaginative, tautly written, just-slightly-magical, fancifully fun series. Warning: You're likely to learn a lot too." --Carl Safina, ocean scientist and author of Nina Delmar, The Great Whale Rescue and Beyond Words , and What Animals Think and Feel "[Tristan] and the multispecies supporting cast--notably a 5-inch mantis shrimp with an 'anger management issue' and built-in clubs powerful enough to sink a submarine--are memorably diverse and colorful. ... a seaworthy sequel to Shark Whisperer (2014)."--Kirkus Reviews "Earn your sea legs and go on an exciting eco-adventure with The Shark Rider. It's fun, funny, informative, and my favorite part is where the characters must outrun a hurricane. And where do they get their information to track the storm - The Weather Channel, of course!" --Stephanie Abrams, On-Camera Meteorologist for The Weather Channel "The Shark Whisperer, Dr. Ellen Prager's first middle grade book, followed by her second, The Shark Rider are part of the Tristan Hunt and Sea Guardians series. The ocean adventure series follows Tristan and his friends as they arrive at summer camp, where they develop unusual, but exciting ocean powers. ... This fun series is written by oceanographer and researcher, Dr. Ellen Prager who is passionate about ocean science, and hopes to educate middle graders about current ocean issues, as well as encourage young readers to get involved in the preservation of ocean life. The series meets the Common Core Standards for English Language Arts and Science. A free downloadable Educator's Guide with language arts and science activities is available."--Current: The Journal of Marine Education, Vol. 29, No. 2, June 2015 "Prager's knowledge of the ocean is extensive and very interesting. Kids that love the water, critters, and having fun will love The Shark Rider, book #2 in a 5 book series. Warning: Reading this series will give you a concern for the world, especially the oceans and the its inhabitants."--KidLit Reviews Reviews for The Shark Whisperer, Book One "...a splashy startup with a promising premise." -- Kirkus Reviews "Those who know Prager well wouldn't be astounded to find her delving into the realm of ocean science and youth fiction. Throughout her career, Prager always made it a priority to involve young minds." -- Miami Herald "Author Dr. Ellen Prager's expertise in marine science and ocean advocacy brings the series to life with vivid and accurate descriptions of marine species and the threats they face, woven among plenty of action and humor." -- Mission Blue "No need to whisper: I very much like, like, like this highly readable, highly unusual way of looking at the ocean." -- Carl Safina, author of Song for the Blue Ocean and host of PBS Saving the Ocean "The Shark Whisperer is packed with science laced with humor and adventure--an underwater Harry Potter, sure to inspire readers to want to dive in and experience the ocean for themselves." -- Sylvia A. Tilbury House,U.S. The Acadia Files Book Three Winter Science

    10 in stock

Book SynopsisIn Book Three of the Acadia Files series, Acadia Greene carries her search for answers into winter.Trade Review"Acadia and two friends learn more science while enjoying a Maine winter. This is the third in a thoughtful series that began with Summer Science (2018). Like its predecessors, this combines a slight storyline with science facts, definitions, and descriptions of experiments using the scientific method. A melting snowman, a floating balloon, a paper-airplane contest, a wait outside in the cold, and a sledding challenge prompt 11-year-old Acadia's questions, which are presented in a present-tense narrative with unlikely dialogue but realistic daily details. Her parents are always happy to help her find answers, offering clear explanations, demonstrations, and encouragement for further experimentation. This outing introduces the topics of climate change, food waste, recycling and repurposing, atoms and elements, buoyancy, aerodynamics, animal adaptations for winter, and the physics of sledding. In each chapter, the protagonists accomplish some activity, one that could be easily replicated by readers at home or in school: listing ways to reduce one's carbon footprint or looking for animal tracks in the snow, for example. The author appends a list of helpful websites for further exploration of each topic. Acadia is pictured as pale and blonde; Joshua is darker, with straight hair, and brown-skinned Isabel wears her hair in two Afro puffs. Experiments, charts, and definitions are hand-lettered and profusely decorated with sketches, and each chapter ends with further questions. Accessible and approachable, a useful tool for science learning. (Informational fiction. 8-12)" -- Kirkus Reviews" The Acadia Files introduces kids to science via the readily observable principles and easy-to-reproduce experiments of its precocious and endlessly curious lead character, Acadia, who’s enjoying the summer before she enters fifth grade. Both of her parents are science teachers, so learning is naturally encouraged. The book introduces important scientific information in a clear and enjoyable fashion. Each chapter highlights a new topic based on Acadia’s summer activities and what she observes. Acadia uses the scientific method to discover who is stealing her blueberries from the bushes. She learns about genetic inheritance of traits like height and curly hair. She learns how sand is formed and what creates seasons and tides. Her summer adventures will open young minds to science and how it helps to make sense of the world. Illustrations from Acadia’s scientific notebook include amusing images, notes from experiments, and summaries of what she learned. Lists of vocabulary terms and further questions are also included. Notebook pages beautifully reflect the perspective of a ten-year-old girl. They are fun and entertaining, supporting and clarifying scientific concepts. The science in the book is wonderfully presented, but there is also another layer of lessons: Acadia learns not to accuse someone without proof; she learns to treat others with kindness; and she learns to accept and even celebrate things that might otherwise irritate her, such as the early morning sun and the temporary nature of a sandcastle. These age-appropriate lessons are clearly conveyed, without taking attention away from the book’s science. The Acadia Files is an excellent book that will help its audience look at the world in a new way. Disclosure: This article is not an endorsement, but a review. The Acadia Files is an excellent book that will help its audience look at the world in a new way. Disclosure: This article is not an endorsement, but a review. " -- CATHERINE THURESON - Foreword Review" Stories are a wonderful way to communicate the wonders of science to people of all ages. This is particularly true when it comes to children. The Acadia Files: Book Four, Spring Science, Katie Coppens’ latest book about a young girl, named Acadia, who explores her surroundings combines lighthearted storytelling with carefully selected morsels of information. In the process, she poses prescient questions to her friends and parents. Wielding the curiosity of a budding scientist, Acadia learns to look at the world from a science-based perspective. The book touches on a wide range of topics, familiarizing readers with different scientific fields. Coppens introduces astronomy and physics through a discussion about asteroids and meteorites. From there, she shifts focus to the seasons on earth and discusses the various tell-tale signs that winter has given way to spring. Coppens deftly pivots to environmental issues ranging from diseases to Earth Day and the damaging effects of pesticides. The stories in The Acadia Files build up to a unifying theme: Nature’s interconnectedness. You can draw a line from the changing of seasons to the effects of human agriculture on the planet. A series of illustrations at the end of the book helps readers visualize the links between seemingly unrelated factors. Practical experiments or activities that parents can do with their kids supplement the stories in The Acadia Files. Demonstrating concepts highlighted in the stories is the best way to retain the book’s lessons. For example, simulating the effects of gravity and meteorite impacts are as easy as dropping different sized balls into loosely packed dirt or sand. In The Acadia Files Katie Coppens continues teaching children by speaking to them through Acadia. This allows her to connect with them as a peer and in the process, nurtures a bond with science. Coppens deftly balances narrative accessibility with the complexity of her topics. She never speaks down to her readers by engaging in unnecessary simplifications. By trusting their intelligence, she ensures they trust her in return. " -- Scientific Inquirer

  • Agroforestry: Systems and Practices

New India Publishing Agency Agroforestry: Systems and Practices

Book SynopsisAgroforestry is an age old practice throughout the world, but its recognition as a science is nearly three decades old. The scientific and systematic research on tree-crop interactions, in India, started in late 1970's and got major support and impetus with the establishment of All India Coordinated Research Project AICRP on Agroforestry in 1983 by ICAR. Today AICRP on Agroforestry has its network through out the country. Under AICRP and through the individual efforts of State Agricultural Universities, location specific agroforestry systems has been recommended to suit agro-climatic zones, landholdings and economic status of the region. Though extensive research had been done till date, but it is not available to scientific world, farming communities who are the backbone of Indian rural development, students and inquisitive readers in one manuscript. This prompted the authors to club the information on agroforestry systems and practices prevailing in India in form of book. For the sake of convenience, agroforestry systems prevailing in India have been divided into four broad sections i Agroforestry in India ii Agroforestry system and practices in North, West and Central India iii Agroforestry systems and practices in East, North-East and Southern India iv Allied topics related to Agroforestry. Section one cover topics covering agroforestry experiences, research and extension efforts done in the last 25 years in India. Section two includes 13 s and section three covers 14 s wherein agroforestry research vis-O-vis agroclimatic zones of different states of India have been discussed. The last section comprising of 8 s includes topics related to role of agroforestry in soil conservation, women development; management of agroforestry; modeling; rehabilitation of mine spoils and breeding of agroforestry tree species.

  • Agroforestry: Systems and Prospects

New India Publishing Agency Agroforestry: Systems and Prospects

Book SynopsisThe book encompasses a total of 26 chapters, with the initial ten chapters discussing traditional agroforestry systems that are prevalent in various regions across the country. These include homegardens, which exhibit a multistrata structure and are typically found in the northeastern and southern regions. The subsequent chapters, from 11 to 14, explore contemporary agroforestry models and the mechanisms of competition within agroforestry systems. Chapters 15 to 19 delve into the nutrient cycling and natural resource conservation aspects of agroforestry systems. In this context, trees assume both protective and productive roles. The tree canopies shield the soil from rain and wind erosion, while the fine roots bind the soil particles together, thereby safeguarding them from erosion. Additionally, trees recycle leaf and root litter, as well as nutrients, making the system at least semi-sustainable. Certain agroforestry models, like shelterbelt and windbreaks, are known to offer protection against dust and sand dunes. Moreover, models like medicinal plant-based systems contribute to the provision of medicinal and other high-value crops. These service-oriented functions of agroforestry are elaborated upon in chapters 20 to 23. Tree improvement is a critical aspect of agroforestry research, and it aids in the development of superior trees for different agroforestry models. The multiplication of propagules and planting materials are equally essential for the expansion of agroforestry. Chapters 24 and 25 provide insights into these aspects. However, agroforestry systems necessitate numerous additional parameters due to their perennial nature. The final chapter discusses economic parameters such as NPV, IRR, annuity, and sensitivity in great detail.

New India Publishing Agency Agroforestry Systems for Resource Conservation

Book SynopsisShivalik ranges cover an area of about 2.14 million ha in Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab and Haryana States of north-west India. Over exploitation of the resources in the region had lead to soil erosion resulting in the rise of riverbeds, siltation of tanks, reservoirs and other natural water bodies. Soil erosion greater than 80 t ha-1 yr-1 have been recorded from denuded hills at places. More than 70 per cent people of the region are dependent on agriculture, however, only 18 per cent of the cultivated area is irrigated. Agroforestry where tree and crops are integrated with each other had been recommended worldwide to check soil erosion and simultaneously achieve production goals. Adoption of scientifically proven agroforestry systems in Shivaliks can reverse the degradation and improve the economic status of the farmers of the region. Extensive research had been done till date on role of agroforestry in resource conservation and livelihood security in the region. The book is an attempt to compile the available knowledge on the subject. There are 20 s in the book covering various topics relating agroforestry systems with soil and water conservation, livelihood security, slope protection through mechanical and vegetative measures, fertility build up, mine spoil rehabilitation, bamboos, climate change and carbon sequestration.Table of Contents01: Agroforestry Scenario and Opportunities in Shivalik Himalayas by Pankaj Panwar, A.K. Book SynopsisFrom Caldecott Medalist and Newbery Honor author Kevin Henkes and acclaimed painter Laura Dronzek, the bestselling and award-winning creators of seasonal favorites When Spring Comes and In the Middle of Fall.Snow falls, animals burrow, and children prepare for the wonders winter brings.Trade Review“This accomplished picture book details the season of winter. Author Henkes’ text is simple but evocative, observing winter in perceptive and sometimes-playful detail. Illustrator Dronzek’s acrylic illustrations...enrich and deepen the text as they add story details and warmth. ...A polished, playful story in which words and pictures dance in perfect harmony.” — Kirkus Reviews (starred review) “Gorgeous...An appealing series of pictures shows the boy donning boots and zippers, vests and zippers, and jackets and zippers, wryly underscored by humorous text. ...The gentle repetitions continue as winter stays, and stays and stays, until it finally shrinks away and slips around the corner into a gorgeous, green spring. ...The large format, language, and pictures merge in a just-right read-aloud for fans of winter’s charms.” — ALA Booklist (starred review) “Another must-have seasonal picture book created through the amazing collaboration of Henkes and Dronzek. . . .The descriptive word choice is able to set the scene perfectly with so few words, and the soft illustrations match and enrich the text seamlessly. . . .Bundle up for this wonderful wintry tale of all the highs and lows that the season has to offer.” — School Library Journal (starred review) “Henkes and Dronzek present a lyrical ode to winter and its many moods. The text, marked by a gentle rhythm, uses descriptive language to bring the season to vivid life...Expressive, full-bleed spreads steal the show.” — The Horn Book “A cinematically enticing take on winter, and the atmospheric lyricism is seasonally suitable. ...A cozy evocation both of the real and imagined experience of days measured by the white stuff.” — Bulletin of the Center for Children’s Books “Acrylic paintings that spill off the pages set the scene through this book, an exploration of the long winter’s season’s juxtapositions. . .Winter’s journey, difficult and serene as it may be, ends with the full-page color spread that is spring. The simple, lyrical text and rich, soft illustrations work together to provide the perfect, snuggle-under-the-covers storytime experience.” — St. Louis Post-Dispatch “Have a warm cup of cocoa, snuggle up with a youngster and share Winter Is Here, a charmer by best-selling, award-winning Kevin Henkes. . . his poetic words [are] accompanied by soft artwork by Laura Dronzek. . . .The season’s never looked or sounded better.” — The Missourian
