Book SynopsisFrom the acclaimed author of Roll with It comes a relatable and “heart-wrenching” (Kirkus Reviews) middle grade novel about a girl who, in a desperate bid to keep her family afloat, takes over her mom’s cleaning jobs after an injury prevents her from working. Now that Franny and her newly sober mom have moved to a cozy apartment above a laundromat, Franny’s looking forward to a life where her biggest excitement is getting top grades in math class. But when Franny’s mom gets injured in a car accident, their fragile life begins to crumble. There’s no way her mom can keep her job cleaning houses, which means she can’t pay the bills. Franny can’t forget what happened the last time her mom was hurt: the pills that were supposed to help became an addiction, until rehab brought them to Mimi’s laundromat and the support group she hosts. Franny will not let addiction win again, even if she has to blackmail a school rival to help her clean houses. She’ll make the money and keep her mom sober—there’s no other choice. Book SynopsisNew York City in the 1960s is the humming backdrop for this poignant, gritty story about a girl who sees her parents as flawed human beings for the first time, and finds the courage to make a fresh start. Missy’s mother has gone back to school to pursue her dream of becoming an artist. Missy’s father works in advertising and takes Missy on secret midnight excursions to Harlem and the Village so she can share his love of jazz. The two write poems for each other — poems that gradually become an exchange of apologies as Missy’s father’s alcohol and drug addiction begins to take over their lives. When Missy’s mother finally decides that she and her daughter must make a fresh start, Missy has to leave her old apartment, her school, her best friend and her cats and become a latchkey kid while her mother gets a job. But she won’t give up on trying to save her family, even though this will involve a hard journey from innocence to action, and finally acceptance. Based on the events and people of her own childhood, Amanda Lewis’s gorgeous novel is driven by Missy’s irresistible, optimistic voice, buoyed by the undercurrents of poetry and music. Yay for being a bit different * THE OVERFLOWING LIBRARY *I keep thinking about everything I loved about this book and it really is everything * READARAPTOR *Whilst on the surface, this is a tense, fast-paced thriller filled with intrigue and mystery, underneath lies a beautifully crafted and heart-breaking story of two girls' relationship as they try to understand, and deal with, their feelings for one another as well as how these feelings affect those closest to them. Brilliantly written using a complex flashback mode that, in less skilled hands, could have resulted in a clunky and confusing narrative, Far From You is a truly gripping and exciting read that will have many readers having to finish it in just the one sitting. A brilliant debut novel from Sharpe that will leave readers eager for more from this talented writer. * WE LOVE THIS BOOK *Far From You is a beautifully written, captivating novel, and as soon as I picked it up, I physically couldn't put it down. It's gripping, thrilling, and I think it's going to be a seriously big debut! Far From You touches on drug and accident recoveries, whilst also being about a really beautiful but complicated love story. I loved it, and I'm pretty sure every body else who reads it will, too. * BOOKS & WRITERS JUNIOR *This review is definitely not going to do this book enough justice; I cannot stress that enough. Heart-stopping; I can barely form words about it! It's full of everything I want, a thrilling, yet gorgeously written... Phenomenally written and completely spine-tingling; I can't do this debut enough justice or recommend it more to anyone who wants a contemporary with something unique. * TO ANOTHER WORLD *Far From You by Tess Sharpe was combination of absolutely everything that I love about YA. The story felt real and emotional. The characters were wonderfully created and relateable. The relationships between the characters was messy and complicated which made it heartbreaking to read. There was a diversity of characters which I always enjoy reading about, an interesting look at a difficult subject and a thrilling mystery that had me at the edge of my seat. * FLUTTERING BUTTERFLIES *

This handy book lays out the essential information needed to understand and prevent excessive Internet use that negatively impacts behaviour, education, family life, and even physical health.Martin L. Kutscher, MD analyses neurological, psychological and educational research and draws on his own experience to show when Internet use stops being a good thing and starts to become excessive. He shows how to spot digital addictions, and offers whole family approaches for limiting the harmful effects of too much screen time, such as helping kids to learn to control their own Internet use. He tackles diverse questions ranging from the effects of laptops in the classroom and reading on a digital screen, to whether violent videogames lead to aggression. The author also explains how ADHD and Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) can make you more susceptible to Internet addiction, suggesting practical strategies to suit these specific needs. Jessica Kingsley Publishers Trauma, Drug Misuse and Transforming Identities:

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisLooking at the life stories of ex-drug misusers in their own words, this book offers insights into the nature of addiction and how it can be tackled. It examines the links between early childhood experiences and drug misuse and also shows pathways to recovery and transformation.Kim Etherington highlights the therapeutic value of listening to drug misusers' life stories and the importance of understanding how social environments and the wider cultural influences shape people's lives. She encourages people working with drug misusers to challenge pathologising notions of `spoiled identity', which assume that identity is fixed. By taking a step back and separating the person from the problem, it is possible to help them explore their relationship with drugs in ways that encourage a stronger sense of agency and power to change. With compelling first-hand narratives and practical strategies to encourage drug misusers' ability to recover, this is essential reading for professionals working with drug users as well as people misusing drugs themselves.Trade ReviewThis stimulating book shows how children construct their identities from their experiences, how trauma disrupts this development and how drugs misuse can become the way they adapt to extreme situations. It also shows how drug misusers have used their own experiences and resources to eventually form healthy identities. Essential reading. -- Therapy TodayThe combination of the courageous revelations of the contributors and Etherington's careful and considered research approach is to be valued and prized... I hope this book is read by those in power, those who believe they know what to do with addicts... Congratulations to Kim Etherington and gratitude to the participants. -- Healthcare Counselling and Psychotherapy JournalWith each reading, I have come into contact with a further dimension of the book that I had previously not encountered. It is, without a doubt, a valuable resource for anyone wanting to move beyond the familiar stories commonly associated with drug misusers. I suggest it would be an excellent core text for students interested in gaining a more enriched understanding of how social and cultural factors can impact on an individual's life. In addition, there is much within this book that offers support to those currently negotiating their own difficult relationship with drugs as well as professionals wanting to enhance their work within the field of drug misuse... I have no hesitation in recommending this book. It is an inspirational, multilayered book that offers much to a wide range of readers. -- EscalateIf this book were made a compulsory read the helping professions might encourage more inclusive practice. I will certainly add it to the various reading lists under my influence as an educator. The core of the book, and its impact, comes from the experts by experience, who chart our journey through the underworld of human suffering. If that sounds extreme, I dare you to read it. As ever, when you really stop and listen you hear the patterns of abuse that underpin the seemingly random behaviour of the more obviously distressed. And for those of you who find comfort and refuge in diagnostic labels, be prepared to feel uneasy. This is the world of relating where little comes between you and the horror of the other person's life experience. You might want to cry or switch off for a while, but hopefully you will continue to see the person in the story... This book left me full of hope. Is there anything more awesome than bearing witness to the human spirit restoring itself from having been broken? -- Drugs and Alcohol TodayI welcome this study by Professor Kim Etherington because it is part of the process of understanding our drug problem and the whole chain of issues that lead to addiction. It is the stories of real people, and in doing so it holds a mirror not just to other people's lives but to our own. -- from the foreword by Monty Don, The Monty Project, UKTable of ContentsPrologue - Hannah's Story. Book SynopsisI Love You, Mum - I Promise I Won’t Die tells the tragic true story of the death of Daniel Spargo-Mabbs following an MDMA overdose. I hadn’t realised how much scope for creativity there was with a play taken completely from other people’s words. Jacob Spargo-Mabbs - Daniel’s elder brother. Fiona told her story like a piece of music. I remember crying as I related it to my wife - not because it was sad, but because it was brimful of love. Paul Ibbott - Composer of the underscore for the OYT production This book offers a unique and fulsome guide for teaching/studying this play and includes a detailed scheme of work for teachers using the play as a set text in the GCSE Drama examination. When Harry (playing Dan) left the cast I remember thinking ‘What are we going to do now?’ The hoodie symbolising Dan was such an amazing concept to show everyone had a part of Dan in them and they were also a part of him and… Dan could be anyone. Alysha Jade Patis - OYT performer This poignant and eminently readable biography of the play is drawn from interviews with Dan’s family, friends and the OYT company.
