Book SynopsisNOW IN PAPERBACK! ★ “Encourages empathy and understanding while spotlighting underrepresented history, and providing an example of how young people can take action. Highly recommended.” —School Library Journal (starred) ★ “Well-crafted and wonderfully fresh.” —Kirkus Reviews (starred)ALSC Notables Selection Capitol Choices Selection Kirkus Best Book of the Year CCBC Choices Selection It’s the summer of 1976. You’re having an amazing family holiday, one where everyone is there and all 18 of you are squeezed into one house. All of sudden it's 4 o'clock in the morning and there's banging and yelling and screaming. The police are in the house pulling people out of bed ...' Sofia is like most 12-year-old girls in New Zealand. How is she going to earn enough money for those boots? WHY does she have to give that speech at school? Who is she going to be friends with this year? It comes as a surprise to Sofia and her family when her big brother, Lenny, starts talking about protests, “overstayers”, and injustices against Pacific Islanders by the government. Inspired by the Black Panthers in America, a group has formed called the Polynesian Panthers, who encourage immigrant and Indigenous families across New Zealand to stand up for their rights. Soon the whole family becomes involved in the movement. Told through Sofia’s diary entries, with illustrations throughout, Dawn Raid is the story of one ordinary girl living in extraordinary times, learning how to stand up and fight.

  • Ways to Play

    Levine Querido Ways to Play

    10 in stock

Book SynopsisRiley has plenty of ways to play; like lining up dolls and stuffies by size and shape. Tearing up newspapers and making piles into mountains, using sharp crayons to draw big swirly patterns. But bossy cousin Emma thinks those ways are wrong, wrong, and wrong. And she makes no bones about letting Riley know exactly what her opinion is. Fortunately, Charlie the dog is on hand to help with a breakthrough demonstration that there are MANY ways to play; and all of them are right. Based on experiences that Lyn Miller Lachman had growing up as an Autistic child and illustrated with the humor, tenderness and understanding that perhaps only an artist like Gabriel Alborozo, himself an Autistic creator, could bring, here is an empowering validation of the value of individual expression. And a whole lot of fun.P R A I S E ? ?Inspired by her own childhood, Miller-Lachmann, who is autistic, is keenly aware that there are many ways of having a good time, and the straightforward, spare first-person narration centers Riley?s experience. Although it?s never explicitly mentioned that Riley has a diagnosis, it seems likely the child is, like the author, autistic, and many neurodivergent children will feel seen and affirmed.??Kirkus (starred) ? ?The poignant text teams together with ebullient drawings, delivering a welcome and heartwarming message for all young readers. Many libraries will find this picture book appealing, especially if their collection of stories needs a new and welcome addition with respect to children of all abilities.??School Library Journal (starred) ?Cousins find common ground through play in a simple story with an instructional thrust from an autistic creative team.??Publishers Weekly

By the end of the book, children will have internalized the message that although we are from different places, we are the same in so many ways. What we have in common is what is most important-family, laughter, love, nature, and friendship. We all share the same wide sky. • Benny Feldman's All Star Klezmer Band

Greenhill Books Benny Feldman's All Star Klezmer Band

Book SynopsisEleven-year-old Benny Feldman spends his days at Sieberling School obeying his number-one rule for surviving sixth grade: blend into the background. So when he signs up his klezmer band to play in the school talent show, his classmates are shocked. Teased by guitar superstar and former friend Jason Conroy, Benny vows to win the trophy and erase the embarrassing nickname that has haunted him since his disastrous debut performance in a first-grade Sabbath play. But, there is a problem. Benny Feldman's All-Star Klezmer Band is only a figment of Benny's imagination. He loves the traditional klezmer music of Eastern Europe, but how is he going to find other players to join him? With the show a few months away, Benny, an accomplished fiddler, embarks on a quest to assemble a band that will beat Jason's rock group at the talent show. His search takes him to an arcade convention, a potato chip factory, an oddities shop, and a storage room stacked with cans of creamed corn and succotash. Along the way, he meets Jennifer, a jazz-loving drummer; Royce, a bow-tie-wearing clarinet prodigy; and Stuart, a braggart accordion player from Cajun Country. He also learns a great deal about the joys and sorrows that lie at the heart of klezmer and discovers that being different can be wonderful. Eventually, the ragtag and renamed "Klez Misfits" mount the stage and the tension-filled climax will have young readers wondering until the end if Benny and his band can pull off a miracle. This fun and feel-good story shows how friends, family, history and culture can all build confidence. Benny learns to believe in himself, has and has fun and finds love along the way.
