Templar Publishing How the World Works

    2 in stock

Book SynopsisHow do the ocean currents move? What is a carbon footprint? Why does it rain? This fun, engaging book introduces the Earth's important cycles and offers an exciting way to learn geography and science. Packed with illustrations and novelties for interactive learning, How The World Works encourages children to think about our impact on the environment, while engendering respect for the world's natural harmonies.Trade ReviewAlthough not as striking from a paper-engineering standpoint, the visual explanations in "How the Word Works" are nevertheless wide-ranging and impressive, covering what truly governs our days: sunlight, fresh water, winds and other key components, Writer Christiane Dorion and illutstrator Beverley Young start with the Big Bang (where else?) and end with the food chain that keeps us all going. In between are hands-on displays, such as a dial that reveals some of the thousands of objects that orbit around the earth., another dial that shows the history of the earth squeezed into 24 hours (always late to the party, humans show up 14 seconds before midnight), a flip book that follows Pangaea's dispersal into today's continents, and four pull-tabs that cleverly illustrate what happens when two continental plates come together or move apart. Double-page spreads about the weather, the movement of the sea and the carbon cycle make apparent the interconnectedness of the Earth's populations. Although the clear and informative text carries a pro-environment message, It stays clear of preachiness. The facts are what jump out at you. * The Washington Post *"careful use of paper engineering means the format is used to explain large topics. An admirable addition to bookshelves" -- Jake HopeA robust, good quality, interactive pop-up at a good price point. This excellent book explains the world in ecological and geographic terms, with all the flaps and fun you could hope for. It is suitable for quite a wide age range." * The Bookseller Children’s Buyer’s Guide *"How the World Works is not only ambitious but also remarkably successful...The colourful illustrations...will appeal to scientists and non-scientists alike, and have allowed for the inclusion of a wealth of information without it all being too overwhelming...all in all, this is an appealing book containing fundamental knowledge about the World to which every child should have access." * Geographical Reviews *"an intriguing scrapbook. The devices are all purposeful rather than gimmicky. This is a well-presented and enjoyable account of some complex ideas". * Child Education Plus and Nursery Education Plus *"A beautifully produced book that engages the senses in order to convey the message that our earth is a fascinating place and that it needs our protection if it is going to survive". * Carousel *"An ansolute mass of information is to be found in this book set out in an entertaining form so the pages are always fascinating and perfect for both interested dipping and more applied reading" * The School Library Association *Review by Prof Irene Tracey "This is a great idea for a book that selects just the right combination of questions ... a great book for an older sibling to read to a younger one ... definitely a book that allows a child 'repeat visits' which in my mind is a winning feature" * Eureka, The Times *"packing an astounding amount of information ... children 7-11 and their parents will find the book stimulating and hard to put down". * Science 2 *"The visual explanations in How the World Works are wide-ranging and impressive, covering what truly governs our days: sunlight, fresh water, winds and other key components. (...) Although the clear and informative text carries a pro-environmental message, it stays clear of preachiness. The facts are what jump out at you."? -- Abby McGanny * The Washington Post *

Book SynopsisA story inspired by a letter from a father to his daughter about wildfire, loss, and learning that we carry our homes inside us wherever we goIn the shade of ancient redwood trees, by a creek, not far from the ocean, a father builds a house for his newborn daughter, where she grows up wild and strong in their coastal canyon home. When a wildfire takes back their beloved house, a father writes his now-grown daughter a letter telling her it’s gone. Inspired by the real letter the author wrote his daughter, this poignant story—written together by father and daughter—joyfully declares that a home is more than just wood and stone; it is made of love and can never be taken away. You carry home with you wherever you go.Trade ReviewThe art echoes the text’s emphasis on beauty rather than loss. . .In the event’s aftermath, the affecting story’s tone remains openhearted, concluding with sentiments that encourage resilience and reflect on the nature of home. * Publishers Weekly *It’s a touching sentiment that reminds readers of all ages that our lives are defined not by our material possessions but by the memories we make. . .Intricate and emotional. * Kirkus Reviews *

It sparkles and glitters. It transforms the outside world. Every kind of snow brings its own magic. It invites snow angels, skating, fort-building, and snowballs. Sato’s deceptively simple illustrations are almost tangible in their layers, showcasing an array of stitches, paper finishes, and fabric surfaces, and depicting an inclusive cast.”—Publishers Weekly “The colorful collage illustrations strongly utilize texture to create depth and visual interest. The materials used to create the outerwear and accessories are especially realistic and invite closer inspection....A playful celebration of wintry weather.”—Kirkus Reviews “Snow Days walks through the magic of winter in charming rhyming couplets. Meticulous paper and fabric cutouts form illustrations that seem to leap off of the page...”—Foreword Reviews “The text is poetic but accessible, and compact without feeling hasty. It affirms the experiences of young winter veterans, while also being instructional for little newcomers...Sato uses paper and fabric collage for the illustrations, creating a striking juxtaposition between the textures of snow (mostly paper) and winter clothes (mostly fabric).”—Quill & Quire “The book, itself, is designed with thick pages, rounded corners and a padded cover, is perfect for little hands. Kerbel’s rhyming text in Snow Days is paired with Sato’s three-dimensional illustrations that were created from a variety of materials and textures and which seem real enough to touch. Young readers will become excited for the first snow of the year with this delightful story. Highly Recommended.”—CM Magazine “Snow Days is a fun picture book that will have young children looking forward to this exciting time.”—Postmedia “Miki Sato’s three-dimensional illustrations, created with cut-paper collage, reflects Deborah Kerbel’s textured text, making us feel the iciness of packed snow and the dampness of mittens, amidst the piles of different snows….[E]njoy Deborah Kerbel and Miki Sato’s exploration in words and art and even consider the handful of experiments for very young children suggested at the end.”—CanLit for LittleCanadians “With Miki Sato’s gorgeous and cheerful multi-textured, paper collage images and Deborah Kerbel’s precise and lively rhythmic couplets, Snow Days is a snuggly, bouncy and softly reflective reading experience–and one that is truly perfect for reading aloud. Additionally, at the book’s end, five simple science experiment involving snow are offered–just right for any potential snow days ahead!”—Fab Book Reviews “This delightful picture book looks at all the different kinds of snow and the things that one can do with it, in it and because of it….Sato’s illustrations, using paper and fabric in collage, add a lovely dimension to the book. The book closes with five fun activities you can undertake with your child to further explore the world and wonder of snow.”—Canadian Bookworm “The illustrations have a stunning depth to them and are layered and detailed papercraft creations…”—Kids Books I Didn’t Hate “The collage art style is absolutely phenomenal.
