  • Twas the Morning of Easter

Zondervan Twas the Morning of Easter

    2 in stock

Book SynopsisIn the beloved rhythms and rhyme of the classic poem “’Twas the Night Before Christmas,” ’Twas the Morning of Easter tells the story of the resurrection of Jesus in a fresh, inspiring way and features joyful illustrations that bring the story to life for children.Trade ReviewImitating the cadence and rhyme of 'Twas the Night before Christmas, author Glenys Nellist's poetic narrative invites children and adults to share the wondrous revelation and surprise that Mary Magdalene and the disciples experienced on the first Easter morning. Readers learn how the lethargy of sleeping guards at Jesus' tomb, the fearful dreams of the discouraged disciples, and the reverent preparations of Mary Magdalene were upended by an earthquake, a rolled-away stone, and the appearance of the resurrected Christ. Nellist's love for the gospel and her understanding of the meaning of Jesus' resurrection for that day in history and up to the present time are clearly conveyed in the worshipful depth of her writing. In this marvelous children's picture book, illustrator Elena Selivanova's luminescent, radiant artwork complements Glenys Nellist's compelling, spirited poetry. 'Twas the Morning of Easter clearly articulates the gospel message and would make a great addition to a family's devotional library. * The Banner *In the tradition of 'Twas the Night Before Christmas, Nellist offers 'Twas the Morning of Easter, a lyrical storybook that celebrates the Resurrection of Jesus. Children will enjoy the rhythmic lilt each page offers as they trace the events following Good Friday through Resurrection Day. Parents will recognize the familiar wording and timing as they read aloud...This new offering is prime for reading during Easter weekend, perhaps Saturday night as the kids anticipate Sunday morning. It offers a wonderful opportunity to remind them (and you?) of the true significance of Easter, why we look forward to it, and the events of that first Resurrection morning. Start a new tradition! * Kelley Matthews, Carpool Conversations/Patheos *In this companion to 'Twas the Evening of Christmas, Nellist offers a creative spin on the biblical Easter story by employing the sprightly rhyme scheme of Clement C. Moore's 'Twas the Night Before Christmas. Nellist visits the guards posted outside of Jesus's tomb (''Twas the morning of Easter, before the sun rose,/ Two guards on a hillside were just trying to doze'), the 12 disciples ('The disciples were sleeping, but tossed in their beds,/ As visions of danger swirled 'round in their heads'), and 'Jesus' friend, Mary,' who plans to 'go to the cave with perfume and spice,/ In hopes that her gifts would make Jesus smell nice,' before encountering the empty tomb and a resurrected Christ. Selivanova contributes atmospheric digital art, rich in chiaroscuro and subtle texture...on the whole, this is an engaging retelling of the Resurrection. Ages 4--8. * Publishers Weekly *

Maps show the ways in which the gospel spread; tables clearly and simply lay out differences in beliefs; and illustrated pages explain key events, people and theological debates throughout the church’s 2,000 year history. Although each period is different from the others, there are common threads that run through all of church history. The pull–out poster featuing the whole timeline, plus key herores and villains, make it easy to trace God’s work through his church.Trade ReviewThis unique and creative collation of infographic timelines that map out the contours of church history is a welcome tool for both younger and older students of the history of God's people... a tremendous means of understanding the vast work of God in times past and how the Faith has been passed down to us. -- Michael A. G. Haykin (Professor of Church History and Biblical Spirituality, The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, Louisville, Kentucky)There are shelves full of books on church history, but almost all of them are directed to adults. This book not only addresses this regrettable situation, but does so with excellence. Parents, teachers and pastors who read through this engaging resource with their children will not only open their eyes to God's continuing work throughout history, but likely learn something themselves! -- David Hogg (President, Phoenix Seminary, Scottsdale, Arizona)Linda Finlayson has written an amazing resource for families. Using clear timelines, engaging illustrations, and theological precision, God's Timeline traces church history from its small beginnings to its worldwide impact. The entire family can learn together about the various people, creeds, and disputes that have shaped the church for the past 2000 years. -- Melissa B. Kruger (author and director of Women’s Initiatives for The Gospel Coalition)This is a helpful and entertaining introduction to the grand sweep of church history. Not only does the text offer a fine narrative of major events and characters but the timeline is especially helpful in allowing children to visualize the interconnection of the events described. A lovely book that will be of help to Sunday school teachers and parents alike. -- Carl R. Trueman (Professor of Biblical and Religious Studies, Grove City College, Pennsylvania)Linda Finlayson has done it again! She's given us a book that not only clearly describes the basic contours of Church History, but also one that draws us in with vivid illustrations and timelines. I want this in the hands of my own children and in the hands of the children of our church. I know I'll be buying copies for other friends and relatives as well. It is an excellent introduction to an important and oft-neglected topic - the work of God in the history of Christ's Church. -- Jonathan Master (President, Greenville Presbyterian Theological Seminary, South Carolina)This book is a treasure trove of exciting stories and factual information. There is no more important and compelling story in modern history than that of the Church, the people of God saved through the work of Jesus Christ. Linda Finlayson covers 2,000 years of action-packed, global history in a way that is both clear and comprehensive. 'God's Timeline' should be a required text in Christian schools and in homeschooling curriculums. -- Timothy Larsen (McManis Professor of Christian Thought, Wheaton College, Wheaton, Illinois)

Book SynopsisElaine Townsend was a bright young thing in 1930’s Chicago. Despite struggles and family heartache Elaine was full of energy and enterprise. She once won an award for being ‘The Best Protestant’ and as a result was given an amazing prize which enabled her to go on a round the world trip. This was a unique experience but one that she would continue to do in later life after she had come to faith in Christ. However, it wouldn’t be trips and luxury travel – rather the hard work and sacrifice of missionary endeavour. When she became a Wycliffe missionary and Cameron Townsend’s wife Elaine discovered how adventurous life can be when you simply say yes to God. It was as though being God’s servant meant that the whole world was her home.

Micah told God's people three times to fear God's judgement for sin but to hope in His faithful love. God says because the people's sin has ruined the land, He will allow the Assyrians to destroy their towns. But one day God will rescue Israel from their enemies, and lead them back home to a place of perfect peace where everyone will thrive. Brian Wright and John Brown show how Micah's prophecy ultimately points to Jesus. This minor prophet offers major lessons, teaching readers about reverence and inspiring hope, two aspects of the Christian life as essential today as when Micah first wrote.

  • The Giant, the Slingshot, and the Future King

Behrman House Inc.,U.S. The Giant, the Slingshot, and the Future King

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisYoung David felt stuck tending his family’s sheep every day—yes, the sheep were important, but they were also boring, stubborn, and had no sense of humor. David wanted excitement. When excitement appeared in the form of a mountain lion that carried away one of the lambs, David vowed to never let that happen again, and set about learning to fight, using a slingshot. But a slingshot is no easy weapon, and it took David a long time to learn to use it well enough to make a difference—but learn he did, setting himself on the road to saving the Israelites in the war against the Philistines, and eventually becoming king. This easy-ready chapter book expands on the story of David and Goliath known to so many children and follows David on his path of learning and practice as he develops the skills that will make him a courageous warrior, a talented musician, a faithful friend, and eventually, king. A note at the end explains archeological evidence about the actual reign of David, and an author’s note discusses the persistence and patience David needed to achieve his goals. Trade ReviewA delightful new romp of a Bible story expands the childhood of King David. Embroidering on the exciting account in I Samuel, the author imagines young David’s lonely days herding sheep as preparation for his adult success. She combines boring and brave in a refreshing tale that never flags. Illustrations and text are humorous and full of pep. When the sheep do not laugh at his jokes or play games, David learns to play a harp, to sing, to write songs, all to occupy his boring days which are suddenly interrupted by a lamb stealing lion. David throws a rock to stop the predator: In vain! His father explains he needs more; he gives him a slingshot. Now the empty days are full of practice; he perfects his skills. When the lion returns David routs him with his sling stones; he understands he can be a protector. Time passes; the story book now follows the Bible. Israel, ruled by King Saul, is at war with the Philistines whose secret weapon is Goliath the giant. This giant dares any man to fight him; frightened, all refuse. David steps up. His brothers say he should not. Saul exclaims David is just a boy he cannot; David says he can. Saul gives David his armor; he rejects it. He meets the giant with only his slingshot. A stone hits the giant in his forehead; it kills him. Unlike the Bible, here David does not behead Goliath. The story ends with hero David’s career with Jonathan and Saul; he follows Saul as king. Becoming a strong king takes practice, once again David does. He reigns successfully founding a new city, dreaming of a new Temple. A short end note explains David’s historical footprint. The book’s last word is about practicing. Despite the shape of the traditional Little Golden Books, the vocabulary is strong, and text is longer. This volume is recommended for synagogue and religious school libraries. --Association of Jewish Libraries

Book Synopsis Many looked on Gladys Aylward's expedition to mainland China as foolhardy and dangerous. It was. On her own, as a single female, she carried her passport and other documents, along with the only money and belongings that she had, in a small briefcase with a teapot and a saucepan tied to the handle. After having purchased her one-way ticket to China, she left the United Kingdom with a single-minded determination to do what God had commanded her. She knew she was meant to go to China - even if no mission was prepared to support her. Unconventional is the only way to describe this journey to the country that would eventually become her home. A theme that would continue throughout her mission work in China where she thwarted authorities, became involved in the Chinese resistance and rescued over 100 children from the invading Japanese army.Written for 9-14 year olds. Trade Review‘It has all the cannot-put down quality one could wish for in such a story. Absolutely ideal for the age group but those older would also enjoy reading it. The Gospel is interwoven throughout as the life and ministry of Gladys unfolds.' -- The Gospel Magazine (Nov/Dec 2003)TRY ANOTHER TRAILBLAZERAs well as Gladys Aylward No Mountain too High, I'd recommend that you look at Amy Carmichael, Rescuer by night. This makes up a nice set of female role models from a variety of different background.Amy was from Ireland and was a bit of a dreamer.Gladys was from London and definitely working class.Isobel Kuhn was from America and well educated. It just goes to show that it doesn't matter where you are from or what your background is - God has a job for you to do. -- Catherine Mackenzie; Children's Editor
