  • Reign: The Church in the Middle Ages

Christian Focus Publications Ltd Reign: The Church in the Middle Ages

    1 in stock

Book Synopsis3 BC–AD 476 During the Middle Ages the church laboured to build a community of faith. Benedict, Columba, and Francis organized communities in which the Gospel could be preached. Theodulf, Anselm, and Bernard of Clairvaux answered the call to reform that community and theology. And when the church’s leaders drifted from the authority of Scripture, a first wave of reformers in Peter Waldo, John Wycliffe, and John Hus arose to call God’s people back to the grace of God. This was a Church that sought to reign, love and conquest, a Church that wanted to secure freedom, and proclaim the gospel. When that Church fell into corruption it undertook its own reform. Which one of these is the medieval Church? They all are! And in that we can find hope in the God Who loves His Church as we seek to live in His name. The Risen Hope series is a narrative–driven history of the Church. Introducing key people and events from the last two thousand years, readers will be captivated by the fascinating stories and engaging writing style. Risen Hope replaces the out–of–print History Lives series.Trade ReviewAn ideal springboard to propel readers into further study of a sadly neglected period in church history. -- Nick Needham (Lecturer in Church History, Highland Theological College, Dingwall, Scotland)Luke Davis has given the reader a ringside seat to the parade of people who have made a difference in the history of the church. Sorting out heresies within and persecutions without, the church called for courageous men and women who stood for the truth. Those are the people you will find in the pages of this book. So sit back and enjoy, and learn how God used his people to care for and guard his church. -- Linda Finlayson (Author of ‘God’s Timeline’ and ‘God’s Bible Timeline’)With sparkling prose, backed by solid research, Luke Davis makes church history come alive for the young reader (and readers of all ages!). … offers engaging historical fiction but also provides timelines, factual summaries of significant figures and events, and insightful reflection. -- Ben Wagner (Rector, Anglican Church of the Resurrection, Chesterfield, Missouri)Luke Davis selects pivotal moments from history, to which he applies an imagination like that of a Hollywood filmmaker. The past jumps into razor–sharp focus, as the reader sees, hears, and feels these episodes happening once again. -- Michael J. McClymond (Professor of Modern Christianity, Department of Theological Studies, Saint Louis University, St. Louis, Missouri)Luke Davis has done an impressive job of telling the history of medieval Christianity for young adults through a skilful use of story and traditional narrative. Highly recommended! -- Michael A. G. Haykin (Professor of Church History and Biblical Spirituality, The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, Louisville, Kentucky)… a unique insight into the controversies of the church and how faithful people stood firm in their faith and held the gospel high. -- Alistair Chalmers (Assistant Pastor of Bruntsfield Evangelical Church, Edinburgh)

Book SynopsisWhile the history of Mexico dates back thousands of years, the story of Mexico City, the country’s capital, only dates to pre-Columbian times, with the founding of Tenochtitlan by the Mexica people in 1325. Tenochtitlan quickly became the most powerful city-state in the region, with a population of about two hundred thousand at its peak, and was known for its architectural and engineering feats.Spanish conquistador Hernán Cortés arrived in 1521 and began a brutal campaign of colonial conquest. The city fell to Spanish rule, and much of it was destroyed alongside rich indigenous heritage. Cortés rebuilt the city, renaming it and making it the capital of New Spain. Under Spanish rule, Mexico City became one of the wealthiest and most important cities in the Americas and was a center of trade, culture, and political power. Many of its iconic buildings were constructed during this time, including the Cathedral of Mexico City and the National Palace. During the Mexican War of Independence, the city was captured in 1810 by rebel forces under Miguel Hidalgo but soon recaptured by the Spanish. After years of fighting, Mexico finally gained independence from Spain in 1821, and Mexico City became the capital of the new republic. In the decades that followed the city underwent rapid growth and modernization, with new neighborhoods, parks, and public buildings constructed.Mexico City, a playfully illustrated history of the city since 1521, highlights the complex cultural and economic forces and conflicts that shaped this international metropolis, which today is home to more than 20 million people, as well as visitors and expats from around the world.

The author has managed to present past and present events in a surprisingly honest and informative way, while still writing in child-friendly language. Normally, by the time events make it to history books, they have been homogenized, clarified, watered down, and made insipid enough to cause a superficial understanding of important events. Not so with this book.“This book has already opened dialogue and inspired lessons for me and the students I serve. I am very excited to have it as a tool for contemplation and, hopefully, change.”—Lorri Giovinco-Harte, assistant principal of English Language Arts at Harry S. Book Synopsis"A fresh lens for viewing Jacob Lawrence's art: through the perspective of teens of color. . . . An invaluable resource amplifying marginalized teen voices and conveying Lawrence's relevance to their own lives." —Kirkus Reviews In the mid-1950s, as Brown v. Board of Education felled the ideology of “separate but equal,” the great African-American artist Jacob Lawrence saw the need for a version of American history that reckoned with its complexities and contradictions yet was shared by all its citizens. The result was his monumental work Struggle . . . from the History of the American People.Lawrence, the best known black American artist of the 20th century, developed the series of thirty panels, each measuring 12 × 16 inches, over the course of two years. Lawrence created the panels as history you could hold in your hands and intended to reproduce the images in a book that he never realized. The paintings depict signal moments in the American Revolution and the early decades of the American republic, and feature the words and actions of founding fathers, enslaved people, women, and Native Americans. In January 2020, the Peabody Essex Museum in Salem, Massachusetts, is mounting the landmark exhibition, Jacob Lawrence: The American Struggle. The show, which unites the panels in one place for the first time in nearly half a century, then travels to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the Birmingham Museum of Art in Alabama, the Seattle Art Museum, and the Phillips Collection in Washington, D.C., on a two-year national tour.In the spirit of Lawrence’s project, this collection includes brief interpretive texts written by teens in response to the Struggle series. This illustrated book features a chorus of thirty singular young adult voices expressing how Lawrence and his Struggle series speaks to them on a personal, emotional level. The young writers come from a broad variety of races and ethnicities, nationalities, religions, genders, sexualities, and abilities, and underrepresented voices. As Jacob Lawrence mined American history to reflect upon events he saw happening around him in segregation-era America, these young adults use these panels to comment on their experiences in today’s America.Trade Review"A fresh lens for viewing Jacob Lawrence's art: through the perspective of teens of color. Created in cooperation with seven art institutions, including the Peabody Essex Museum and the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture, this anthology features teen-authored prose and poetry responses to Lawrence's 30-panel visual narrative, Struggle: From the History of the American People. Some pieces articulate what teens see in the art; in others, the art inspires reflections about their lives. All address the difficulties of growing up minoritized in the U.S....The volume includes all of the Struggle paintings, their original captions, and a brief commentary on each. An invaluable resource amplifying marginalized teen voices and conveying Lawrence's relevance to their own lives." * Kirkus Reviews *
