Quarto Publishing Group USA Inc Clay Lab for Kids: 52 Projects to Make, Model,
Book SynopsisIn Clay Lab for Kids, art teacher and winner of the Netflix bake-off show Nailed It! Cassie Stephens presents 52 hands-on projects made with kid-friendly clays that get kids working creatively and thinking three-dimensionally. Squishy, colorful, and infinitely shapable, clay just might be the most versatile art material for kids. Author-artist-teacher Cassie Stephens has created all-new clay projects for kids of all skill levels. Start with the basics of rolling, coiling, and pinching pots, and move up to making "Jurassic fossils," animal marionettes, monster magnets, and boxes with secret compartments. All of the projects use kid-friendly, no-kiln clay (air-dry, homemade, and polymer) and water-based paints, perfect for home and classroom, plus there's an entire chapter of recipes for mixing up inexpensive homemade clays in the kitchen. When creating with clay, kids are introduced to a wide range of cognitive and manual skills: they'll work three-dimensionally; make figurative models; use their imaginations in making jewelry and toys; design with color; and decorate with paints. The popular Lab for Kids series features a growing list of books that share hands-on activities and projects on a wide host of topics, including art, astronomy, bugs, geology, math, and even how to create your own circus—all authored by established experts in their fields. Each lab contains a complete materials list, clear step-by-step photographs of the process, as well as finished samples. The labs can be used as singular projects or as part of a yearlong curriculum of experiential learning. The activities are open-ended, designed to be explored over and over, often with different results. Geared toward being taught or guided by adults, they are enriching for a range of ages and skill levels. Gain firsthand knowledge on your favorite topic with Lab for Kids.Trade Review“Clay is a mainstay of art media for kids, and here an art teacher provides projects and techniques for a variety of clays. Air-dry clays, polymer clay, and homemade clays are all featured here, along with paints and sealers…Recipes for make-it-yourself clays include salt dough, clay dough, Silly Putty, and candy clay and are designed to be simple enough for kid participation. Throughout, Stephens encourages kid sculptors to be creative and to keep in mind the science behind the art.” – Anne Heidemann, Booklist Online"Ideal for families looking for artistic activities, as well as teachers and caregivers interested in introducing clay to children ages five and up.” – Heather Halliday for Library JournalTable of ContentsUnit One: Creating with Kids and Clay How This Book is Organized Basic Supplies Variety of Clays Basic Tips Glossary of Clay Terms Clean up and Caring Unit Two: Air Dry Clays and Learning the Basics Lab 1: Shoe Stamped Pottery Lab 2: Coffee and a Donut Lab 3: Textured Landscape Plaque Lab 4: Cupcake Containers Lab 5: Stack of Pancakes Lab 6: Coil Press Pot Lab 7: Monogramed Wall Hanging Lab 8: Dropped Cone Sculpture Lab 9: Wax Resist Leaf Dish Lab 10: Line Relief Pencil Cup Lab 11: Hamburger Holder Unit Three: Clay Sculpture Lab 12: A Clay Coat of Arms Lab 13: Pie Safe Lab 14: Egyptian Sarcophagus Lab 15: Magical Forest Friend Door Lab 16: Miniature Cacti Garden Lab 17: Garden Gnome Home Lab 18: Bobble Head Pets Lab 19: Castle on a Hill Lab 20: Crayon and Pencil Project Lab 21: Woodland Creature Portraits Lab 22: Viking Ships Lab 23: Marionette Puppets Lab 24: Animals Masquerade Masks Unit Four: Polymer Clay and Learning the Basics Lab 25: Glittery Geodes Lab 26: Color Mixing Clock Lab 27: Fun Fortune Cookies Lab 28: Light Up Lightning Bugs Lab 29: All About Me Mobile Unit Five: Polymer Clay Sculpture Lab 30: Tie Die Turtles Lab 31: Miniature Accordion Books Lab 32: Sushi for Supper Lab 33: Glitter Bugs Lab 34: Monster Face Magnets Lab 36: Back Pack Charms Lab 37: Game Pieces and Dice for Your Own Game Lab 38: Let Your Light Shine Night Light Lab 39: Funky Faux-saic Lab 40: Desktop Dinos Unit Six: Making My Own Clays Lab 41: Simple No-Cook Clay Lab 42: Stamped Clay Ornaments Lab 43: Scented Clay Acorns Lab 44: Kool Aid Play Dough Lab 45: Kool Aid Clay Popsicles Lab 46: Jurassic Fossils with Sand Clay Lab 47: Glitter Clay Beads Lab 48: Make Your Own Silly Putty Lab 49: Salt Dough Rose Sculpture Lab 50: Salt Dough Bird Sculpture Lab 51: Salt Dough Texture Fish Lab 52: Candy Clay

C & T Publishing Girl's Guide to DIY Fashion: Design & Sew 5
Book SynopsisDo you have a bunch of ideas for super-cute clothes but can’t find them when you’re out shopping? This book will teach you how to make anything you can dream up! Dresses? Yes. Jeggings? Check. Put your own stamp on everything you create by first sketching your designs in the book. You’ll learn how to make fashion design mood boards, using things that you love and that inspire you. You’ll be designing and sewing purses, headbands, skirts, and tops in no time! Now you won’t even need to leave the house to find your favorite outfit!Trade ReviewApril 2015 In another review I mentioned how I learned to sew as a child with help from a book called My Big Book of Sewing. This taught me the basics and showed me that sewing was fun, and a good opportunity for using imagination as well as producing something useful or amusing. It was rather thin on fashion however, unlike this inspiring book on how girls can make their own clothes. Most sewing books start with what you need, show you how to use it and then give you some projects to make to get you started. This is fine for adults, but younger people need a bit more to get encouraged. You can find all that here, from lively colorful layouts to the voice of the author, talking to the book’s owner like a friend. Get started by choosing a box for your supplies and decorating it, before learning what you need to put in it. Learn the parts of a sewing machine and what they all do, create a sewing space and a mood board. I love the way all this takes place first but not in a boring way as there are practical things to do such as the mood board and drawing fashion designs, and none of it takes too long to read. A fair but of knowledge is encapsulated in an admirably short section with plenty of pictures and things to try out. The projects themselves are grouped into sections such as back to school, friends, slumber party, summertime and party wear. Each section has four things to make or customizations for existing items. A project has a full page photo of the garment, plus a list of what you need, how to make it and tips to make it all go successfully. All the garments and accessories are designed to be fun to make and wear, and making them will teach a novice sewer how to do most of the basics. If this sounds boring this also includes the fun part, meaning embellishment and plenty of it. In short, this is a wonderfully produced book that is sure to appeal to any girl who wants to learn how to make their own clothes. * Myshelf.com *July 2015 This book is aimed at girls aged 7-14 and is the kind of book I would have loved as a child. Both my children have enjoyed looking through it. My 6 year old couldn’t wait to make the polar bear and the step-by-step instructions were really helpful. She’s quite impatient when it comes to crafting but seeing everything laid out really encouraged her. I made the sloth as it’s my favourite animal. There are also galleries of designs to inspire & ideas for using the finished rock art. -- Nicola Urmenyi * Customer review *The book has clear instructionds with helpful pictures, lots of inspiration and ideas for techniques I've never really considered before.
