Everything from camping and kite building to raising dogs and building boats is detailed for the would-be adventurer and do-it your-selfer.Trade ReviewAt first glance, this republication of a more than 100-year-old book is simply an artifact of immense nostalgic charm.... The Handy Book was then - and now again is - a brim-full collection of guidance on an immensity of subjects, ranging from knot tying to boat-making, to outdoor survival without appropriate gear. Sure there have been developments and discoveries since, of equipment and techniques. Book SynopsisSewing School authors Amie Plumley and Andria Lisle teach a sewing camp in Memphis, Tennessee, which has earned accolades from delighted children and parents. When families clamored for more, Plumley and Lisle launched a blog, sewingschool.blogspot.com, to rave reviews. Now, they've channeled the best of their children's sewing projects into this lively, how-to- sew book for ages five and up. Featuring 21 inspired projects for young sewers, Sewing School allows kids to create fabric masterpieces with minimal supervision. All projects have been kid-tested, most can be made using simple hand stitches, and all can be embellished with a personal touch, making them a terrific out- let for kids' creativity. To further inspire young needle-crafters, the book is peppered with photos and quotes from real boys and girls who have participated in the authors' sewing camp. Projects include items that children can hug (pillows, doll, blanket) , hold (wallet, tote, draw- string pouch) , give as gifts (coasters, glasses case, pot holder), and wear (sleep mask, hat, cuffs). Each project features step-by-step instructions written in a style to suit most children, a close- up photo of every step, and a photo of the finished project. The book includes full-sized cut- out patterns in a front pocket and instructions for how grownups can help. Out of stock

Book SynopsisDo you have a bunch of ideas for super-cute clothes but can’t find them when you’re out shopping? This book will teach you how to make anything you can dream up! Dresses? Yes. Jeggings? Check. Put your own stamp on everything you create by first sketching your designs in the book. You’ll learn how to make fashion design mood boards, using things that you love and that inspire you. You’ll be designing and sewing purses, headbands, skirts, and tops in no time! Now you won’t even need to leave the house to find your favorite outfit!Trade ReviewApril 2015 In another review I mentioned how I learned to sew as a child with help from a book called My Big Book of Sewing. This taught me the basics and showed me that sewing was fun, and a good opportunity for using imagination as well as producing something useful or amusing. It was rather thin on fashion however, unlike this inspiring book on how girls can make their own clothes. Most sewing books start with what you need, show you how to use it and then give you some projects to make to get you started. This is fine for adults, but younger people need a bit more to get encouraged. You can find all that here, from lively colorful layouts to the voice of the author, talking to the book’s owner like a friend. Get started by choosing a box for your supplies and decorating it, before learning what you need to put in it. Learn the parts of a sewing machine and what they all do, create a sewing space and a mood board. I love the way all this takes place first but not in a boring way as there are practical things to do such as the mood board and drawing fashion designs, and none of it takes too long to read. A fair but of knowledge is encapsulated in an admirably short section with plenty of pictures and things to try out. The projects themselves are grouped into sections such as back to school, friends, slumber party, summertime and party wear. Each section has four things to make or customizations for existing items. A project has a full page photo of the garment, plus a list of what you need, how to make it and tips to make it all go successfully. All the garments and accessories are designed to be fun to make and wear, and making them will teach a novice sewer how to do most of the basics. If this sounds boring this also includes the fun part, meaning embellishment and plenty of it. In short, this is a wonderfully produced book that is sure to appeal to any girl who wants to learn how to make their own clothes. * Myshelf.com *July 2015 This book is aimed at girls aged 7-14 and is the kind of book I would have loved as a child. From creating mood boards, to designing and making your own garments and accessories , author Rachel Low encourages girls to create, have fun and feel good about what they can make. It is filled with brilliant ideas and tips that will give them confidence and help them to find their own style. With full-sized patterns in the back, this book is written simply in language that girls will understand. * Love to Make *Table of ContentsIntroduction [Chapter Title] Note for girls and parents What the girls say - students quotes Affirmations Things to Know [Section Opener] Essential Tools [Chapter Title] Tools/Supplies [Head 1] Using the Iron [Head 2] How to Pin [Head 2] Sewing Machine Basics [Head 1] The Parts [Head 2] How to use it [Head 2] Hand Sewing [Sidebar] Your Sewing Space [Head 1] How to Use This Book [Chapter Title] Finding Your Creative Style [Head 1] What Inspires You [Head 2] What do you love - Let's Doodle [Head 2] Mood Boards - How-to/room to create your own [Head 2] How the projects are organized - the process is broken down [Head 1] How to Use Patterns [Head 1] Ready to Create! Book SynopsisThe My First Patchwork Book kit includes the book, a cardboard Four Patch template, plus patterns for patchwork alphabet code flags. This fifth book in the My First Sewing Book series teaches young crafters the backbone of quilting: learning to piece fabrics together. Children first learn how to choose and prepare fabric, make and draw around a template, and sew four patches together into a block to make a pillow or flag. The book then guides them to make more patchwork blocks with squares, rectangles and triangles, sew appliquÉ, combine blocks and then make the alphabet patchwork blocks of the international code flags. Winky Cherry's unique My First Sewing Book program teaches young children not only sewing skills, but life skills: responsibility, commitment, focus, patience, coordination, organization, and how to follow rules, all through the enjoyment of sewing. In six books, levels progress from simple hand sewing, embroidery, and doll making, to machine sewing, patchwork, and quilting. The three hand sewing books feature clever rhyming instructions for children as young as 5. The three machine sewing books are for children ages 7 and older. All six titles have simple, clearly-illustrated instructions. Each book builds on the previous books, and each book can stand alone.
