  • Sharkbot Shalom

    Behrman House Inc.,U.S. Sharkbot Shalom

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisA Shabbat recharge is just what Sharkbot needs. But will he be ready in time?“The strength in Sharkbot Shalom is the whimsical and anthropomorphic creature named Sharkbot (combination shark and robot) which children will find imaginative and engaging.” – Ellen Share, Association of jewish LibrariesGet ready for an underwater, steam-punk Shabbat! Count down with this cheerful shark robot as he sets the table, stirs the seaweed soup, and braids kelp into challah loaves. You'll want a byte of the food when a stingray brings seagrass cakes and algae sweets. Some pufferfish made a plankton pie!Trade ReviewThe strength in Sharkbot Shalom is the whimsical and anthropomorphic creature named Sharkbot (combination shark and robot) which children will find imaginative and engaging. The illustrations of the deep ocean are fanciful and cleverly depict the Sharkbot with changing facial expressions throughout the book as he prepares for a Shabbat meal with his sea creature friends. The poetic verse contains rhymes as the countdown to Shabbat begins, which will also power down Sharkbot’s motor. “The stingray brings SIX plates of treats, from seagrass cakes to algae sweets.” The friends need to hurry to prepare for Shabbat before it arrives so they will be ready before his battery dies. When Shabbat begins, Sharkbot “calms from tail to nose.” In the final pages, a spread is confusing which shows on the verso the Shabbat candles are lit and on the recto Sharkbot plugs in his battery. The traditional approach to Shabbat is not to plug into electricity after the Shabbat candles are lit. This sequencing could possibly confuse the reader, especially in Orthodox homes. ---Ellen Share, Association of jewish Libraries

  • If I Swam with Jonah

Behrman House Inc.,U.S. If I Swam with Jonah

    Out of stock

Book Synopsis"If I Swam with Jonah makes a great read-aloud at bedtime, and it’s also the perfect addition to a family Yom Kippur service." - Jewish Book CouncilWhat would you do if you met Jonah and the big fish? Would you make them a seaweed snack? Join them for a swim in the sea?Maybe you'd show Jonah how to help others.Ages 3-6; Includes a note for families with a brief explanation of the story of Jonah, struggling with doing things we should but don't want to do, and helping others.Trade Review"The story of the minor prophet Jonah, as contained in the biblical Book of Jonah, is in many ways a troubling tale with an ambiguous ending which finds Jonah having learned only modestly from his experience. It's read in synagogues often on Yom Kippur. In IF I SWAM WITH JONAH, author Moritz and illustrator Haley find a nifty way to bring the Jonah story to young children, in a rhyming text that creates a midrash.Moritz's cleverness is to impart the tale in the first person voice of a boy who talks to his beloved pet about a fish way bigger than the goldfish, the one that swallows Jonah when he did not want to assist the people of Nineveh as God commanded. Wisely omitted is the textual reason for Jonah's reluctance -- that Nineveh was just about the most wicked place on earth. From there, the narrator joins Jonah in the belly of the beast, where Haley's art conceives of the prophet in period dress, with the interior walls of the fish decorated with sea-themed art. The tone is whimsical and fun, and so is Haley's art. Jonah, inspired by the narrator and their experience, declares himself ready for his mission, and returns to dry land with the narrator. The artist works in themes of purple for the fish, and the art is simple and accessible to young kids.I could easily see this book being read aloud to kids during the days between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, and kids being delighted. There's an afterword where Moritz shares her inspiration for the story. Moritz and Haley know the core text, and the Jewish religious content is text-based. This is also a book that will appeal to many Christian families looking for a support text for their Hebrew Bible explorations, or Muslim families exploring the placement of the Jonah (Yūnus) story's placement in the Koran. This overall appeal to the three Abrahamic faiths is rare and noteworthy. It is worthy of Sydney Taylor recognition." --Jeff Gottesfeld, author of The Christmas Mitzvah, for Sydney Taylor Shmooze

  • The Curious Lobster

The New York Review of Books, Inc The Curious Lobster

    10 in stock

Book SynopsisAn American Wind in the Willows, this charming tale of Mr. Lobster and his underwater and dry land friends celebrates curiousity and having an open mind, and will be sure to delight children and parents.Whether you are five or one hundred and five, chances are you’ve never met a lobster as learned and charming as Mr. Lobster—and he’d be the very first to tell you so. Mr. Lobster has evaded the fisherman’s trap for decades, but life in his corner of the ocean seems duller by the day. The time has come to seek new adventures, new friends, and even—gasp!—new, dry lands. Dry land is of course perilous for a saltwater-dwelling creature, as are the folks you can meet there, like badgers, bears, birds, and snakes. But Mr. Lobster has a way of turning every enemy into a dear friend and of escaping the scrapes his curiosity gets him into. An American Wind in the Willows, The Curious Lobster stories have been delighting a small and devoted fellowship of readers for going on eighty years. Sweet but not cloying, instructive but not didactic, they acknowledge the challenges of getting along with others and celebrate the possibilities of a life lived beyond the normal swim of things. This edition collects all of Richard W. Hatch’s Mr. Lobster stories, originally published in two volumes The Curious Lobster and The Curious Lobster’s Island.
