  • A Song for Gwendolyn Brooks

Union Square & Co. A Song for Gwendolyn Brooks

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisGwendolyn Brooks crafted poems that captured the urban Black experience and the role of women in society. This book celebrates her life and work.Trade Review"In sturdy free verse, Duncan (Memphis, Martin, and the Mountaintop) celebrates the life of Gwendolyn Brooks, an African-American poet whose gifts emerged while she was very young. Brooks's parents allow her to skip chores to work on her writing, but, early on, a schoolteacher accuses the child of plagiarism. The young poet exonerates herself by writing a verse on the spot titled 'Forgive and Forget, ' whose lines speak of unjust treatment: 'If their taunts cut and hurt you, / They are sure to regret.' Throughout her life, Brooks stays loyal to her South Side Chicago roots--'63rd Street is a brown face muse./ Gwen types her poems in a crowded corner'--and, in 1950, becomes the first poet of color to win the Pulitzer Prize. Debut illustrator Gordon offers softly outlined images in warm, earth-toned pinks and browns, evoking sunset on the brick buildings of Chicago and suggesting emotions with shadowy swells of color. Duncan underlines the growth not only of Brooks's talent, but of her belief in herself and her craft, and her willingness to keep working: 'Gwen's confidence is a bud in spring./ Revised... revisions make poetry RING!' An author's note and other references are included." --Publishers Weekly "This brief biography of the Pulitzer Prize-winning poet features a handful of Brooks' own poems interspersed with original verse about the woman and her writing. The warm pink undertones of Brooks' glowing brown face on the book's cover fade to a muted brown and beige palette inside the book's pages. Simple scenes and images use thick blurred lines and blocks of color as a background to the text as it recounts her life chronologically, from age 8 in 1925 to her winning the Pulitzer Prize in 1950. The poems about Brooks are headed by Roman numerals, I through IX. At first, she is 'unsure, ' watching and listening to the sounds and behaviors of the people in her neighborhood, writing poems in her journal and burying those that disappoint her. When her teacher accuses her of plagiarism, her mother has her write a poem in front of the teacher to prove her brilliance (the poem is included). Her parents believe in her and leave her 'free to sit and think. Her process is lovingly described: 'She learns to labor for the love of words' through draft after draft. She befriends other poets and studies older poets. 'She found her light. // And-- / A furious flower / GREW!' The combination of biography and Brooks' own poems makes for a strong, useful, and beautiful text. . . . A solid introduction to a brilliant writer. (author's note, timeline, suggested reading, bibliography)."--Kirkus "Part paean and part biography, Duncan introduces young readers to the early years and work of poet Gwendolyn Brooks, leading up to her 1950 Pulitzer Prize--the first awarded to a Black writer. Each numbered section is heralded with 'SING a song for Gwendolyn Brooks, ' the first line of a couplet or triplet that sets the theme for a developmental period or episode in her life. Duncan's own spare, cantabile verse (interspersed with several selections of Brooks' own poetry) cuts to the heart of Brooks' experience growing up in the 1920s Chicago South Side . . . As readers learn, the observant wallflower has talent and complete parental support (and later, her husband's support as well) for her single-minded ambition to become a poet; by high school she's been published, and she hones her skills in writers' groups: 'Her words are psalms from a South Side Street./ They are polished and poised like English silver.' Duncan's closing remarks and timeline summarize Brooks' lifetime accomplishments, noting her commitment to mentorship and community support. Economical black line and rounded shape vignettes in browns, mauves, and pinks enhance the individual reader's experience, but the read-aloud audience will find that Duncan's text does not require embellishment. ." --The Bulletin of the Center for Children's Books "In her smoke-filled neighborhood in Chicago's South Side, eight-year-old Gwendolyn Brooks wonders if the pink flowers outside her home can grow without sunlight. The flower metaphor continues in this picture-book biography of the award-winning poet. Duncan's own blues-style free verse recounts young Gwendolyn beginning to write snappy rhymes in dime-store journals. Even as a teacher accuses her of plagiarism and she doubts herself, her parents believe in her gift for poetry. When Gwendolyn gains confidence, she studies influential poets, 'paints poems with paintbrush words, ' and eventually becomes the first black American to win the Pulitzer Prize. Cared for by her family, Gwendolyn found her light, and like 'a furious flower, ' she grew. Loosely drawn, digitally enhanced artwork, rendered in pinks, mauves, and oranges, reinforces the flower imagery. Samples of Brooks' poems throughout give children a true sense of the poet's rhythm and appeal, while an author's note provides more details about her life. This book makes a terrific companion to Brooks' body of work, especially her much-loved Bronzeville Boys and Girls (2007)." --Booklist

As a young girl, Katherine Johnson showed an exceptional aptitude for math. In school she quickly skipped ahead several grades and was soon studying complex equations with the support of a professor who saw great promise in her. But ability and opportunity did not always go hand in hand. As an African American and a girl growing up in an era of brutal racism and sexism, Katherine faced daily challenges. Still, she lived her life with her father’s words in mind: “You are no better than anyone else, and nobody else is better than you.” In the early 1950s, Katherine was thrilled to join the organization that would become NASA. She worked on many of NASA’s biggest projects including the Apollo 11 mission that landed the first men on the moon. Katherine Johnson’s story was made famous in the bestselling book and Oscar-nominated film Hidden Figures. Now in Reaching for the Moon she tells her own story for the first time, in a lively autobiography that will inspire young readers everywhere.Trade Review* “Johnson artfully weaves in the heart of how African American communities have survived and advanced—through "self-help and sacrificing" for the next generation. Larger ideas such as white supremacy are broken down with ease for younger readers. . . . Johnson’s story is easy to follow and hard to put down. Highly recommended for purchase in any school library.” -- School Library Journal, starred review“[Johnson’s] loose narrative style feels conversational, which will draw in readers, and an interesting afterword compares the movie Hidden Figures to her actual experience. . . . Black-and-white photos illustrate this highly accessible memoir by a groundbreaking woman.” -- Publishers Weekly“In this most authentic, highly personal account, Katherine writes her own story at the age of 100! . . . • Jerry Changed the Game!: How Engineer Jerry

Simon & Schuster Jerry Changed the Game!: How Engineer Jerry

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisA Junior Library Guild Selection Meet Jerry Lawson, the Black engineer who revolutionized the video game industry, in this engaging picture book biography perfect for fans of Whoosh!: Lonnie Johnson’s Super-Soaking Stream of Inventions and Little Legends: Exceptional Men in Black History. Before Xbox, PlayStation, or Nintendo Switch, there was a tinkerer named Jerry Lawson. As a boy, Jerry loved playing with springs, sprockets, and gadget-y things. When he grew up, Jerry became an engineer—a professional tinkerer—and in the 1970s, he turned his technical know-how to video games. Back then, if players wanted a new video game, they had to buy an entire new console, making gaming very expensive. Jerry was determined to fix this problem, and despite roadblocks along the way and having to repeat a level or two, it was never game over for his mission. Eventually, he leveled up and built a brand-new kind of video game console: one that allowed players to switch out cartridges! He also founded Video Soft, Inc., the first African American–owned video game company in the country. Jerry’s tinkering and inventions changed the video gaming world forever. Today, gamers have access to hundreds of video games at the push of a button, all thanks to him. Game on!Trade ReviewGrowing up in 1940s Queens, Jerry Lawson was always a tinkerer, moving from handcars to radio receivers by age thirteen and then televisions at sixteen. His parents actively supported his interests, even searching out schools where racism would not limit a Black boy’s chances at a good education. A cross-country move to northern California in 1968 as an adult and a job at a semiconductor manufacturer poised Lawson for success in the nascent video game industry. He led development on the Fairchild video entertainment system, a home console with removable cartridges that launched shortly before the Atari 2600, and then worked on games for Atari. This work helped bring video games from arcades into the home and changed the way people play forever. Tate contextualizes Lawson as a Black engineer moving through an overwhelmingly white industry, while ably conveying a sense of fun in both Lawson’s engineering projects and the rising star of video game entertainment. Potential setbacks are posed with a refrain of “Was it GAME OVER?”, framing Lawson’s accomplishments and failures around a recognizable hook for readers more familiar with mobile gaming or a Nintendo Switch than an Atari (let alone a Fairchild). Digitally colored and inked pencil art uses desaturated colors and often depicts Black children playing arcade and video games; digitally added stippling and subtle patterns add depth, though the combinations are not always harmonious. An author’s note gives further biographical information about Lawson’s life, as well as information about the other major players involved in creating the first video game cartridge. Book SynopsisWhat does it take to be an investigative journalist and discover the truth against all the odds? Daphne Caruana Galizia had a happy childhood with her family on the small island of Malta, loving books, stories and writing. When she succeeded in her ambition to become a journalist, she discovered that there was much to write about in her home country. She found that greedy and corrupt politicians were making themselves rich rather than working for the good of their people. Fearlessly, Daphne exposed criminal and dishonest activities. Her enemies responded with threats and insults to discourage her from revealing more. But nothing could dissuade Daphne from fighting for what she believed in. Trade Review“This book powerfully captures Daphne’s story of incredible courage and persistence, and will inspire the next generation to continue her fight for truth and justice.” -- Reporters without Borders * Rebecca Vincent *"It coruscates in the way it tells this true story. At once there is a deep, strongly-felt passion for the woman that shines out brightly...there is also - not overtly, but still there below the surface - the roaring anger about how something so good and beautiful could be taken from us. Become friends with the book, listen to the truth of its message, hold this story in your hands and your heart." * A Few to Read *"It really is special." -- Jon Biddle * Twitter *"A picture book that reminds me why we need picture books: to tell stories about inspirational people. This story...will stay with me for a long time." -- Jo Bowers * Associate Dean, Cardiff Metropolitan University *"Should be in every primary school collection." * Red Reading Hub *"This is no ordinary picture book but one with a clear message, and motive - to show that Daphne's life was not in vain. In a time in which people's freedoms are being eroded, it is more important than ever that people are there to scrutinise leadership and governance, and who better to impassion in that venture than the next generation?" * Books for Keeps 5-star review *"I love the power of this book...the message is clear and simple: fight injustice; do not give up, be true to yourself. But it is the images that make the book so powerful, conveying the difficult message symbolically, without being overly frightening." * Juno *"A gold star achievement for a picture book: a wholly age-appropriate account of the extraordinary life of Maltese human rights activist, Daphne Caruana Galizia. The book explores complex ideas...It shows the vital importance of truth-seeking - of asking questions rather than accepting lies, of standing up for justice." * Amnesty International - Top books to inspire young activists *"..an invaluable aid in classes eager to develop critical thinkers … This book is an important resource for KS2 to discuss press freedom, peaceful protest to uphold truth and justice, women in journalism and power politics." * English 4-11 *"This is a welcome addition to the genre reminding us there are many inspirational figures around the world who may not be familiar figures – but who should be." * Ibby UK *
