Book SynopsisSouthfield High School is oh so normal, with its good teachers, its bad, and its cliques. And then there's Elise: the pretty one. But at the start of Year 11, when the group befriend the new boy, Elijah, things start to change.Trade ReviewAnother brilliant book from Nicci. I didn't know too much about it as I just wanted to jump into it and my gosh was it gripping! This is an important book and we always need important books in the world to spread the word about certain issues. I really liked how this story was told and the story-line. I liked that it kept you in the dark about what happened to these kids. This was a fast-paced thriller. * Words From A Reader *Cleverly written full of suspense and tension * Supermum *Superbly crafted... I was awestruck at how impressively the whole plot is drawn together. * Armadillo Magazine *It makes you question yourself as an adult, regarding the comments and actions you make and I believe will be even more so with a YA reader. A very emotional and thought provoking read. * Reading Zone *There's plenty of clever misdirection, with Cloke holding back the all-important fact of who carried out the shooting for longer than I would have believed possible. This is a story of how friendship are made - and how they can be so easily broken. I was thoroughly engrossed in the lives of the teenagers, as the book hurtled towards the tragedy that had been signalled at the very start. But in the tradition of the classic Greek tragedies, it's not what happens that matters, it's how it happens that holds the audience entranced. Close Your Eyes is a book that will worm its way under your skin. You'll laugh with the group and ultimately cry with them, and like them, you'll wonder what could have been done to prevent the tragedy that gradually but inexorably unfolds. * Crime Review *

Book SynopsisFrom Katie Cotugno and author of Sex and the City Candace Bushnell comes this fierce and feisty exploration of feminism: standing up, speaking out and rewriting the rules. Don’t be easy. Don’t give it up. Don’t be a prude. Don’t be cold. Don’t put him in the friendzone. Don’t act desperate. Don’t let things go too far. Don’t give him the wrong idea. Don’t blame him for trying. Don’t walk alone at night. But calm down! Don’t worry so much. Smile!Marin is a smart, driven, popular girl – she's headed for Brown when she graduates and has a brilliant career as a journalist ahead of her. Especially in the eyes of English teacher Mr Beckett. He spends a lot of time around Marin, and she thinks it's harmless . . . until he kisses her. No one believes Marin when she tells them what happened, so she does the only thing she can: she writes an article called 'Rules for Being a Girl' for the school paper to point out the misogyny and sexism that girls face every day. As things heat up at school and in her personal life, Marin must figure out how to take back the power and rewrite her own rules.Trade ReviewA fiercely feminist call to arms * Guardian *This attempt to keep women in their place is deftly captured in the book * Grazia Magazine *The authors write a convincing teen exploring the complex, frequently sexist social norms that girls and women navigate daily * Publishers Weekly *Young people starting to explore social justice will find this engaging work a stepping stone on the way to heavier fare such as Roxane Gay’s Bad Feminist or Margaret Atwood’s The Handmaid’s Tale * School Library Journal *This is a great book, so important for our time. It will be really helpful to many youngsters grappling with the complexities of 'being a girl'. * School Librarian *Rules for Being a Girl is a YA novel, but it has a sophisticated tone, so I still found it incredibly enjoyable. [...] 4 stars - I was pleasantly surprised by this YA novel. The story really sucked me in -- Coco’s Tea PartyA witty and inspiring coming-of-age feminist drama about what girls have a right to expect. Moxie meets Legally Blonde * South Wales Evening Post *Rules for Being a Girl is an excellent and thought-provoking read about the imbalances that continue to exist in a society that likes to tell itself that equality of the sexes exists * Pythia Reads *I also finished Rules for Being a Girl by Candace Bushnell and Katie Cotugno on Monday night which I enjoyed. I think it’s especially a great book for those exploring feminism as it encourages you to think about it, as well as leaning into sub-topics within feminism, such as class and race -- What Vicky ReadI just absolutely loved this story, I found it incredible and so empowering, Marin’s character was so well written that I just rooted for her the entire way through, we all have our flaws but no one should define us but ourselves. It came with an amazing ending and I 100% recommend this book -- Niffler ReadsRules for Being a Girl is incredibly powerful and really made me think about the double standards society has for women. This poignant book discusses the pressure on girls to be effortlessly perfect in modern society and what feminism means. Bushnell and Cotugno’s beautiful writing was gripping and I ended up finishing this book in one sitting! I would recommend this to everyone, especially teen readers! -- The Everlasting LibraryRules For Being a Girl was a timely, important and powerful book that I really hope reaches teen girls everywhere – as it’s a perfect introduction to feminism through the eyes of a young girl who only just begins to see the injustices of the world herself – I am recommending this to my school library ASAP, and I just know it has the power to go on and change the world -- Midnight Book GirlOh I do love a book that’s get me fired up, feminist books, bringing the patriarchy down, love it all! It makes me come out of my shell I think sometimes. In a way I wish we had more of this of when I was at school. But working in a school and making sure this book goes into the many hands of my students will be my part. All girls need this book out there, it’s rife with power and fighting for your own voice. Cracking read! -- Never Judge A Book by it’s CoverIt was a short, simple read better suited to younger end of the YA audience. Whilst the straightforward style was perfect for getting the message across it felt a bit too simplistic for me at times but I would still say Rules for Being a Girl is a worthwhile, thought provoking read -- SereadipityI would definitely recommend Rules for Being a Girl to young teen readers who are looking for a novel similar to Moxie as a light hearted starting point. It’s a very quick, easy read which will enlighten readers on the simple and subtle injustices we grow up not noticing. And if anyone is inspired to set up a feminist book club I will rejoice -- Library LooterI really loved how this book ended. It definitely could have gone a different way but I am so glad it didn’t. It left things open to the reader. It was realistic and showed how just one small moment can change everything – especially if you’re the victim. This is such an amazing and strong novel and I urge you all to go out and read it if you haven’t already. You will not regret reading this strong, heart-pounding, feminist read -- Day Dreamers Thoughts (5 stars)It speaks volumes and is a valuable lesson learnt that all young girls should read -- Reading with Nessie - Instagram

Hang on to your wigbecause it will be snatched! * Dean Atta, author of The Black Flamingo *A hilarious, exhilarating, touching debut novel, filled with failure, self-discovery, resilience and glitter. * Guardian *I enjoyed being a part of Robin's world, watching him hope, and fail, and recalibrate, just as we all have to do. It’s about picking yourself up, dusting yourself off and getting over knockbacks – the hard lessons awaiting everyone as they reach adulthood. There’s a message here about not only being true to yourself, but being there for others and lifting them up – everyone needs a shot at centre-stage. BOY QUEEN has drama, charm, and warmth, and George Lester has created a cast of characters you’ll miss as soon as it’s over. * Justin Myers, The Guyliner *A lovely, inclusive book with very likeable characters, and a must-read for fans of drag * Sophie Cameron, author of Out of the Blue *What can I say to round up this absolute joy of a book. First of all, it is the only book in a long time that I literally couldn’t put down. I started it before dinner and finished it in bed. I told George myself that I would kill to be able to send Boy Queen to my younger self – it certainly would have allowed me to release my inner queerness, my inner queen. This is a delightful read full of realistic, hilarious characters and lots and lots of drag! I would definitely recommend this! * The Everlasting Library *Boy Queen by George Lester was a fabulous, heartfelt and fun story about coming into your own, with a loveable main character, wonderful friendships and sparkling all over with queer joy. I loved this book so much! It was hilarious and full of fabulous drag shows as well as confronting homophobia and telling a relatable story about figuring out your path in life. -- Sasha and Amber ReadI read this book from cover to cover without putting it down and loved the story – I particularly think that it deserves a spot in and some attention from school libraries, especially with its look at first relationships, identity, and the anxiety and pressures surrounding the end of secondary schooling. -- Pythia ReadsWell, this is a hoot of a read! An unapologetic queer cackle of a read with extra glitter thrown in for good measure! This feels like such a strong UKYA contemporary debut, tackling the issues of friendship, LGBTQIA+, homophobia bullying while touching on a gentle romance and coming out in your own pace. Am intrigued to see if George writes a sequel or a companion novel to follow one or two of the characters and tackle these issues further. -- The Pewter WolfIf you’re in the mood for an exciting new contemporary I would most definitely recommend Boy Queen, it’s fun, queer and fabulous! I could not put this novel down, and the cover is absolutely beautiful, I loved the detailed descriptions of dressing in drag and the journey Robin took to becoming a drag artist. -- Library LooterThis is just BRILLIANT. It made me laugh and cry. It’s full of fun and expression. It’s learning from others and being yourself. It’s romance and heartbreak. It’s lies and friendship. It’s Drag Race and queer. It’s just bloody brilliant. Team Seth all the way. Sometimes everything’s gotta fall apart for it to come back together. I really loved Robin and his crew. I thought his mam was great too. -- A Little But A LotOh my wigs and lashes, this was such a fun read, I loved it. Written by a real life drag queen, aka That Gurrrl, this is such a delight. -- Rambling MadsOverall, I loved it! It was a fun and very enjoyable read that had me constantly turning the pages! The story was unique and works as an insightful look into the world of drag. It's full of fun, friendship and glitter - what more could you want?! I definitely agree that anyone who is a fan of Ru Paul's Drag Race or Everybody's Talking About Jamie will love this, but I would actively encourage anyone to read it. I have already recommended it to two friends who I know will adore this book! -- Janay BrazierI can’t recommend this book enough, it’s once of those charming, important quick reads (because you won’t be able to put it down, I couldn’t). And like I said, I want a sequel! -- Jth BooksUtter perfection!!!! Condragulations. It's all about finding yourself and learning to accept your truth, highlighting the importance of seizing the moment. -- Scorpio Book DreamsA wonderful and uplifting contemporary for long time fans and those only just getting to know drag. It might seem scary at first, but it’s a blast -- Fantastic Books and Where To Find ThemI absolutely couldn’t put it down while I was reading. Overall, this was such an amazing debut and I’m already dying to get my hands on whatever George does next! -- Golden Books GirlBoy Queen’ is a truly brilliant tale of a young man finding himself in the most unexpected way, with some wonderful supporting characters, some good old juicy teen romance and bravery in the face of adversity. I mean, George himself has described ‘Boy Queen’ as ‘Dumplin’ meets RuPaul’s Drag Race by way of Gilmore Girls’, and this is perhaps the perfect summary of the story. You’ve got the downtrodden, inexperienced but determined main character who shines when they’re given the right opportunity, the supportive drag community - with some shade thrown in for good measure - the adorable first love with classic teen complications, friendships that could withstand any storm, and a bloody good mother-son relationship that makes your heart swell. I flew threw this proof in the early stages of lockdown, and it was just what I needed to lift my spirits and give me hope. Thank you for this, my darling. It’s golden. -- Grace LatterThis book is *singing* FABUUUUUULOUS!!!!.....Robin is a flawed character and throughout the entire book he learns a lot about himself.... I loved the sheer joy, fun, glitz, glamour and owning the stage and expressing yourself of being a Queen. I thought it was Dragtastic!....Boy Queen is ultimately about expressing yourself, chasing your dreams and never giving up. -- Nver Judge A Book By It’s CoverBoy Queen is a novel that deserves to mop up every award going, and George Lester is a brilliant, assured new voice in the small but growing world of LBGTQIA+ books. * Crime Review *A great coming of age story, and a fabulous edition to the LGBTQIA YA genre! I’m really interested to see what else George Lester produces in the future! -- Carla’s Little LibraryI loved loved loved this YA novel by @thegeorgelester The characters, the drama, the joy and the heartbreak. Book Synopsis“A big-hearted story that’s as sweet as it is awesome.” —R.J. Palacio, author of Wonder “An honest, emotionally rich take on disability, family, and growing up.” —Kirkus Reviews (starred review) In the tradition of Wonder and Out of My Mind, this big-hearted middle grade debut tells the story of an irrepressible girl with cerebral palsy whose life takes an unexpected turn when she moves to a new town.Ellie’s a girl who tells it like it is. That surprises some people, who see a kid in a wheelchair and think she’s going to be all sunshine and cuddles. The thing is, Ellie has big dreams: She might be eating Stouffer’s for dinner, but one day she’s going to be a professional baker. If she’s not writing fan letters to her favorite celebrity chefs, she’s practicing recipes on her well-meaning, if overworked, mother. But when Ellie and her mom move so they can help take care of her ailing grandpa, Ellie has to start all over again in a new town at a new school. Except she’s not just the new kid—she’s the new kid in the wheelchair who lives in the trailer park on the wrong side of town. It all feels like one challenge too many, until Ellie starts to make her first-ever friends. Now she just has to convince her mom that this town might just be the best thing that ever happened to them!Trade Review“A big-hearted story that’s as sweet as it is awesome.” —R.J. Palacio, author of Wonder"Ellie is filled with ideas for delicious baked goods, but she can’t quite figure out the recipe to make her family feel whole again. Filled with heart and spirit—I love this book.” —Kristin O'Donnell Tubb, author of The Story Collector series and A Dog Like Daisy"My son Jacob says: 'I usually read books about wizards and magic, but I liked this a lot. I liked the scenes and I wanted to hang out with Ellie. I'm reading it a second time now.'"—Deb Perelman, creator of Smitten Kitchen* "Drawing on her own experiences with her son, who has cerebral palsy, debut author Sumner doesn’t sugarcoat Ellie’s daily challenges—social, emotional, and physical—including navigating showers and crowded classrooms. . . . Ellie is easy to champion, and her story reminds readers that life’s burdens are always lighter with friends and family—and a good piece of pie—at the ready." -- Publishers Weekly, starred review* “Her voice equal parts vulnerable, reflective, and deliciously wry, Ellie is refreshingly complex. Kids navigating disabilities may find her frank frustration with inaccessibility, illness, and patronization particularly cathartic, but readers with and without disabilities will recognize her desire to belong. The mother of a son with CP, the author portrays Ellie and her mom's loving but fraught relationship with achingly vivid accuracy, bringing the tension between Ellie's craving for independence and her mother's fears to a satisfying resolution. . . . An honest, emotionally rich take on disability, family, and growing up.” -- Kirkus Reviews, starred review* “Ellie takes on life head first, and her first-person, present-tense narrative reveals a feisty, dynamic character surrounded by well-rounded characters just as appealing as she is. The plot moves swiftly, and it's refreshing that the story's focus is less on Ellie's disability and more on her gradual ability to learn how to ‘roll with’ the situations that life throws one's way.” -- Booklist, starred review“A heartfelt and humorous glimpse into the life of a girl with cerebral palsy who is determined to make her mark on a world that often perceives her as limited because of her disability. . . . The challenges faced by youth like Ellie are underrepresented in children’s literature; highly recommended for middle grade collections.” -- School Library Journal“Sumner, whose son has cerebral palsy, writes Ellie without sitcom clichés and with authentic near-teen sass. The telling details of wheelchair use, health risks, and social challenges ring true but don’t overshadow the characterization of Ellie as a person, who loves to bake even more than she likes to snark and whose narration is spirited and inviting. Fans of Kate DiCamillo will especially appreciate this story of unexpected friendship and belonging.” -- BCCB

Book SynopsisDoes growing up have to mean growing apart? Identical twins Maya and Nikki have always agreed on the important things—their friends, the right boys, their plans for college and the future. But before senior year begins, too many things are changing. Their neighborhood is starting to get nice—and not really in a way Maya enjoys. With houses turning into trendy coffee shops and restaurants, and neighbors, including their best friend, Essence, being pushed out, Maya’s neighborhood is becoming unrecognizable. And when a new—white—family buys the house Essence’s mom rented, Nikki suddenly has a new best friend and Maya has a new admirer, someone she’s not sure she should like. And then there’s their principal, intent on prioritizing the comfort of white students at the expense of the school’s largely Black identity. What’s worse, no one seems to be as alarmed by these changes as Maya is—not even Nikki. As Maya struggles to hold on, she begins to wonder where—and with whom—she belongs. From Newbery Honor and Coretta Scott King Award-winning author Renée Watson comes a poignant novel about love for home and for ourselves, embracing change, and what it means to grow up.Trade ReviewWriting with the artfulness and insights of African American teen-lit pioneers Rita Williams-Garcia, Angela Johnson, and Jacqueline Woodson, Watson shows Maya exploring concerns rarely made this accessible . . . essential for all collections. -- starred review * Booklist *Watson paints a thoughtful, powerful picture of the complications of contemporary African- American experience, especially when it rubs up against the hipster middle class. . . . Without ever losing focus on the story of a group of likable teens working through changes during their senior year, Watson effectively manages character and situation to create a genuinely interrogative, genuinely multi-voiced perspective that reflects efforts to negotiate personal identity and desires amid unresolved problems of systemic racial injustice. -- starred review * BCCB *An intriguing look at how families and young people cope with community and personal change. She’s sharing a vibrant world so well, friends who make us care, crackling true voices and legacies, interweave of troubles, knowing a place, wanting it never to change except in good ways, holding on to friends, doorways, porches, rooms and rhythms, don’t go, don’t go, the tiny rich glories making it home. 'Sometimes you have to rewrite your own history,' she says, then she lets her people do it, reshaping . . . 'A cleansing is taking place' and it’s the world we live in and she gives it back to us so we understand the mystery a little better even if we can’t solve it, even if nothing is ever quite fair. There’s more there, and she finds it. -- Naomi Shihab Nye, author of HABIBI

Book SynopsisFall in love at first blunder with a wisely foolish kindergarten teacher who makes the first day of school an experience to remember. Kayla isn’t too sure about the first day of kindergarten. What if she misses her mom? What if she can’t find the bathroom? But when Kayla meets Mrs. Muddle, it quickly becomes clear that Kayla’s problems are nothing compared to her teacher’s. Mrs. Muddle mixes up the kids’ name tags, takes them to the library instead of the gym, and can’t find the bathroom. She doesn’t even know how to use a slide properly! Clearly somebody needs to take charge. Soon Kayla is much too busy teaching her teacher to think about her own worries. Hearkening back to classics like The Amelia Bedelia collection and Douglas Wood’s What Teachers Can’t Do, Colleen Nelson will make parents, children, and especially teachers laugh out loud over Mrs. Muddle’s antics and the exasperated Kayla’s leadership. As the students find their way around the school, Alice Carter’s giggle-inducing art welcomes readers into a kindergarten class that makes the first day of school seem very appealing indeed.Trade ReviewPraise for Teaching Mrs. Muddle 2021 CCBC Best Books for Kids & Teens Selection 2021 Open Book “Read Local – Ottawa” Selection "This story is perfectly suited to settle some first day jitters, but will also be appreciated by teachers and parents who know what it takes to help children feel comfortable in new environments."—School Library Journal “Nelson’s narratorial voice is clear and charming, and the choice to illustrate Kayla as a dark-skinned girl of color is pleasing.”—Kirkus Reviews “We rated this book: [5/5]…Colleen Nelson has written a really sweet story that will help young students with their first-day jitters. The writing has a great sense of fun and the story will make the pages fly by….A most charming book.”—Seattle Book Review “Whether or not the reader knows that Mrs. Muddle’s ‘mistakes’ were on purpose, they will enjoy following her and the class all around the school….The illustrations add to the humor and really give the feel of a tour around an elementary school….This would be a perfect read aloud for a first day of kindergarten (or preschool, or first grade).”—Youth Services Book Review “A fun-loving, thoughtful picture book about first-day-of-school jitters, empowerment and personal growth…Nelson has astutely captured both the curiosity and nervousness that often accompanies kids when beginning something new. And Carter’s bright, delightfully whimsical illustrations bring Kayla and her new school world brilliantly to life….A practical resource for librarians, teachers and families, this timely book makes the grade as ideal reading for bringing the focus back to a love of learning, friendship and fun…”—Canadian Children’s Book News “Colleen Nelson creates a very relatable school situation that is both engaging and charming. It’s giving Kayla and every child the opportunity to see that they embody far greater capabilities than they imagine they possess....Even in a light but big-hearted story about finding your own way by helping others, Colleen Nelson drives home the conviction that young people can do so much.”—CanLit for LittleCanadians “The illustrations were the best part of this book. They absolutely made the story come to life….From problems matching nametags to kids at the beginning of the day, to going to different rooms in the school as the day progressed, to using snacks as art supplies, the kids learn to work together to get things done and keep Mrs. Muddle organized.”—Canadian Bookworm “[A] really lovable and amusing story that's sure to ease some first day jitters.”—Little Bookworm Club “Teaching Mrs. Muddle is a funny little book that conveys the message that it is okay to be nervous about starting new things; it’s a universal feeling shared not just by students but their teachers too; what is important is to be kind and extend help when you see that someone could with it.”—The Vancouver Writer’s Fest “This heartwarming tale had me smiling and giggling as Mrs. Muddle brilliantly guides her students and puts their worries at ease through her “mistakes”.”—@jmebills “Does your little one have the back-to-school jitters? … Grab some books about school that will make them laugh and feel prepared. Written by Vicky Martin and the students of Limpsfield Grange, a school for girls with Autism Spectrum Disorder and communication and interaction difficulties, M's story draws on the real life experiences of teens with autism.Trade ReviewAn insightful and honest page turner with a distinctive voice and a wonderfully engaging heroine. A truly remarkable achievement by Vicky Martin and the students of Limpsfield Grange. -- Katy Birchall, author of 'The It Girl' seriesReally nice to hear more about M. She has a brilliant way of describing autism, in particular the sensory experiences and the desire to belong and be 'normal', whilst being aware of her anxiety and her limits. I could relate very much to her need to know why, her need for exact timings and structure, and her confusion about why people don't say exactly what they mean. This book will help a lot of young girls feel a lot less alone. -- Alis Rowe, Entrepreneur and Founder of the Curly Hair ProjectI wanted to wrap my arms around M - and her story - and never let go. This glimpse of the world through her eyes is touching, taut and - most importantly - truthful. -- Karen McCombie, authorM in the Middle provides one of the best insights that I have ever read into the world not only of teenage girls but of all people on the spectrum, and does so while still being entertaining, well written, funny and moving. Beyond its obvious readership, it should be required reading for all neurotypical teenagers with the purpose of developing empathy for the struggles their peers on the spectrum face, particularly in mainstream education. I will be recommending it to everyone, everywhere. -- Davida Hartman, Director and Senior Educational Psychologist at The Children’s Clinic, Dublin and author of 'The Growing Up Guide for Girls: What Girls on the Autism Spectrum Need to Know!'I really enjoyed reading M in the Middle. It was very believable and easy to identify with M. It's a great project and an important book, as well as being a fab read! -- Cathy Cassidy, bestselling author of ‘The Chocolate Box Girls’ series
