Sourcebooks, Inc This Delicious Death
Book SynopsisFrom the New York Times bestselling author of My Dearest Darkest comes another incredible sapphic horror. When four best friends with a hunger for human flesh attend a music festival in the desert they discover a murderous plot to expose and vilify the girls and everyone like them. This summer is going to get gory.Five years ago, the melting of arctic permafrost released a pathogen of unknown origin into the atmosphere, causing a small percentage of people to undergo a transformation that became known as the Hollowing. Those impacted slowly became intolerant to normal food and were only able to gain sustenance by consuming the flesh of other human beings. Those who went without flesh quickly became feral, turning on their friends and family. However, scientists were able to create a synthetic version of human meat that would satisfy the hunger of those impacted by the Hollowing. As a result, humanity slowly began to return to normal, albeit with lasting fear and distrust for the people they'd pejoratively dubbed ghouls.Zoey, Celeste, Valeria, and Jasmine are all ghouls living in Southern California. As a last hurrah before their graduation they decided to attend a musical festival in the desert. They have a cooler filled with hard seltzers and syn-flesh and are ready to party. But on the first night of the festival Val goes feral, and ends up killing and eating a boy. As other festival guests start disappearing around them the girls soon discover someone is drugging ghouls and making them feral. And if they can't figure out how to stop it, and soon, no one at the festival is safe.

Simon & Schuster Delicious Monsters
Book Synopsis“A haunted house thriller packed with cryptic mystery, dark humor, and bone-chilling twists.” —Ryan Douglass, New York Times bestselling author of The Taking of Jake Livingston The Haunting of Hill House meets Sadie in this “genuinely terrifying” (School Library Journal, starred review) psychological thriller following two teen girls navigating the treacherous past of a mysterious mansion ten years apart.Daisy sees dead people—something impossible to forget in bustling, ghost-packed Toronto. She usually manages to deal with her unwanted ability, but she’s completely unprepared to be dumped by her boyfriend. So when her mother inherits a secluded mansion in northern Ontario where she spent her childhood summers, Daisy jumps at the chance to escape. But the house is nothing like Daisy expects, and she begins to realize that her experience with the supernatural might be no match for her mother’s secrets, nor what lurks within these walls… A decade later, Brittney is desperate to get out from under the thumb of her abusive mother, a bestselling author who claims her stay at “Miracle Mansion” allowed her to see the error of her ways. But Brittney knows that’s nothing but a sham. She decides the new season of her popular Haunted web series will uncover what happened to a young Black girl in the mansion ten years prior and finally expose her mother’s lies. But as she gets more wrapped up in the investigation, she’ll have to decide: if she can only bring one story to light, which one matters most—Daisy’s or her own? As Brittney investigates the mansion in the present, Daisy’s story runs parallel in the past, both timelines propelling the girls to face the most dangerous monsters of all: those that hide in plain sight.Trade Review"One part breathtaking ghost horror, one part gripping thriller, and an all-round absorbing read. Delicious Monsters turns an unflinching light onto the cycles of trauma and the ghosts that follow." -- Chloe Gong, #1 New York Times bestselling author of the These Violent Delights Duet“A haunted house thriller packed with cryptic mystery, dark humor, and bone-chilling twists. Sambury approaches the grim recesses of intergenerational trauma with diligence and bravery. The odd ghosts, fearless prose, and raw character dynamics make this an absolute page-turner and a win for psychic fiction.” -- Ryan Douglass, New York Times bestselling author of The Taking of Jake Livingston"Full of eerie ghosts and secrets most sinister, Delicious Monsters is the perfect read for a dark and stormy night. I read most of it from behind the safety of my fingers and was left thoroughly haunted." -- Erin A. Craig, New York Times bestselling author of House of Salt and Sorrows and Small Favors"On one page, this book sings a lullaby, and on the next, it throws you into a whirlwind you never could’ve seen coming. At its core, Delicious Monsters is a screaming declaration to the world that Black girls are complex and flawed, capable of everything, and that we matter. I'll be putting Delicious Monsters into the hands of everyone I know with a pulse." -- Brittney Morris, author of Slay and The Cost of Knowing“Scary, complex, emotional, lived-in, ambitious, Liselle Sambury’s Delicious Monsters is a can’t miss. A Canadian gothic epic (northern gothic?) that has a lot to say about the stories and lies we tell ourselves about our own families. Oh, and did I mention it’s scary?” -- Adam Cesare, author of Clown in a Cornfield and Video Night"Delicious Monsters grabs you by the throat in the first chapter and refuses to let go until the very end. I was on the edge of my seat for this whole book. Sambury’s chillingly beautiful prose will stay with you for ages." -- Victoria Lee, author of A Lesson in Vengeance*"A haunted mansion is the site of unmistakable horrors and horrific mistakes...The paranormal logistics are complex, and while Daisy is at the center of it all, Brittney’s investigation cuts through to discover layers upon layers of trauma that imbue the house with its supposed supernatural, if not psychological, power. As the saying goes, haunted people haunt people. A story that is careful to make its ghosts and monsters painfully real." -- Kirkus Reviews, STARRED REVIEW * 12/15/22 **"Even with the large cast of characters and dual narratives, Sambury carefully and clearly builds an intricate story that uses metaphors of gardening to spotlight the cyclical nature of sexual violence while providing a genuinely terrifying haunted house ghost story...An excellent choice for fans of sophisticated horror that includes both paranormal and real-life terrors, such as Elana K. Arnold’s Red Hood." -- School Library Journal, STARRED REVIEW * 3/1/23 *"The deeply creepy mansion delicately ties together two main characters who, despite being separated by 10 years and having very different backgrounds, are both fierce and compellingly imperfect, though one is perhaps less reliable than the other. A must-read." -- Booklist Reviews * 1/1/23 *"Using speculative elements to cultivate genuinely terrifying scares whose perpetrators straddle the line between imagined and real-life monsters, Sambury empathetically highlights cycles of abuse, depression, and generational trauma." -- Publishers Weekly * 1/30/23 *

Walker Books Ltd Joe Quinns Poltergeist
Book SynopsisA beautifully imagined story for fans of Neil Gaiman, by the dream team of bestselling author, David Almond and award-winning artist, Dave McKean.Joe Quinn tells everyone about the poltergeist in his house, but no one believes him. No one that is, except for Davie. He's felt the inexplicable presence in the rooms, he's seen random objects fly through the air. And there's something else a memory of his beloved sister, and a feeling deep down that somehow it might be possible for ghosts to exist.Trade Review“Strangeness also saturates David Almond’s graphic-novel collaboration with Dave McKean Blurring the boundaries between text and image, child and adult, life and afterlife, Almond and McKean create a sense of the meeting point between the human and sublime.” * The Guardian *“In the arresting style of their earlier collaborations, McLean’s visuals give life to the dark, otherworldly soul of Almond’s short story.” * The Bookseller, Children’s March Previews *“Each page is a work of art…Combining the demotic and the lyrical, Almond continues to mine the language and circumstances of his own youth, and to reveal the weighty emotional and spiritual moments of young lives.” * Sunday Times, Children’s Book of the Week *“DAVID ALMOND’S brilliant books explore powerful emotions of grief and hope, the balance between the ordinary and extraordinary, reality and the supernatural. In this stunning graphic story, created with longtime collaborator Dave McKean, he draws on the death of his own baby sister, Barbara, when Almond was just seven… Set against the backdrop of Almond’s beloved Tyneside terraced streets, with troubled priests, footballing youths and broken families, the thought-provoking tale is brought vividly to life by McKean’s powerful illustrations.” * Sally Morris, The Daily Mail *“…a wonderfully immersive tale, told with David Almond’s trademark melancholy grit and wit.” * Financial Times *

Hot Key Books The Twisted Tree
Book SynopsisPart ghost story, part Nordic thriller - this is a twisty, tense and spooky YA debut, perfect for fans of CORALINE and Michelle Paver.Trade ReviewA creepy and evocative fantasy, likely to make readers wary of the shadows in the corner of an eye * Sunday Times *Creepy and amazing * MTV UK *The Twisted Tree is a romantic, creepy, hugely atmospheric story. I loved it. * L.A. Weatherly *I really enjoyed this book - well written, an original idea, with an unusual setting and some fantastic moments. Martha is a great character and I like the fact that she isn't an automatic hero, that her bravery isn't a given. * NM Browne, author of WOLF BLOOD *The Twisted Tree is billed as a YA novel, but don't let that fool you - this is a ghost story that will get under the skin of the most hardened reader. It's a slow burner that makes fantastically creepy use of its isolated Norwegian setting, and expertly combines Nordic mythology with the supernatural. In many ways, it feels a bit like Neil Gaiman's Coraline collided with Catherine Storr's Marianne Dreams, with a smidgen of Beowulf thrown in for good measure * Starburst Magazine *Rachel Burge presents us with a stunning intermingling of Norse mythology, horror, and an unusual coming of age. Hauntingly beautiful descriptions, juxtaposed against a ramping relentless sense of peril. Wonderfully eerie, deliciously frightening, a perfect story for a dank and windy night in front of the fire * Bookbag *Its dark and ominous and the perfect quick read for those who want some eerie goodness on a weeknight. The fact that I opened it, sat down and read for 3 hours straight (minor breaks because my heart can't take creepy) on a night when I have 5000+ other things I should be occupying myself with solidifies my belief that this should get a perfect score * Close Encounters of the Paper Kind *So compelling and creepy, and would make a perfect Halloween or wintery read * Library of Books and Tea *Brilliantly effective at creating a slow, creeping atmosphere that made me feel chilled even when sitting in a room filled with lots of people. Fantastic writing! * Chrikaru Reads *This is the perfect story for the dark nights which will come before spring and I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys thrillers which are atmospheric rather than gory. A beautiful and haunting tale * Book Murmuration *The spooky descriptions of the cabin and its surrounds are like an Arthur Rackham illustration melted into words; the mixture of Norse mythology and horror creates an atmosphere of Stephen King intensity, while at the same time we witness a slowburning and credible relationship between two very damaged but likeable protagonists * Irish Examiner *The dark, cold month of January is the perfect backdrop to this wonderfully chilling new novel * Viva Lewes *Dark, eerie and wonderfully creepy, The Twisted Tree has everything a Nordic horror story should have: a bitterly cold and unforgiving setting, ghostly undercurrents, monstrous creatures and characters struggling with very human demons * Culturefly *Author challenging that Alan Garner-esque sense of ancient, almost incomprehensible power rumbing from the soil. Burge creates a wonderfully chilly atmosphere with some sharp shocks, emotional honesty and clear potential for further adventures for Martha * SciFi Now *Entertaining... you will root for the happiness of two young people struggling to find their way in the world * SFX Magazine *Imbued with Norse mythology this creepy coming-of-age tale is perfect for the cold January nights * South Wales Evening Post *A gripping and spooky debut novel that got me out of a reading slump * Shaz Reads *It's a very creepy and atmospheric book perfect for winter. I felt myself there when I was reading it. The pace was good, and it was very mysterious * Umut Reviews *Wonderfully chilling Scandi-noir 'lite' that is brimming with mustery and mythology * Night Resplendent *Evocative and scary, Burge's debut is perfect for spooky nights * Mail on Sunday *The spooky descriptions of the cabin and its surrounds are like an Arthur Rackham illustration melted into words; the mixture of Norse mythology and horror creates an atmosphere of Stephen King intensity, while at the same time we witness a slow-burning and credible relationship between two very damaged but likeable protagonists * Irish Examiner *I started and finished it that night. I was absolutely hooked. This book was very much my thing - I LOVE reads that include elements of myth and legend, magic and mystery - so this one had me from the get go, and it didn't disappoint.Immediately, The Twisted Tree became a favourite, and I was recommending it to anyone who would listen, and can we just talk about those covers...There's just something about the simplicity of it that is so beautiful to me. And the small bits of subtle gold foiling on the cover of The Crooked Mask that you just catch in certain lights really brings out that element of magic that's in the book for me (a photo cannot do it justice).I know, you're probably thinking pft yeah okay, a lot of book covers use foil Hope, and you're correct. But there is just something about this one. There aren't large sections of foil, just tiny lines of it around the cover, so subtly that unless you catch it in just the right light you might not see them. The black and deep yellow on the cover give me that sense of darkness and horror, and the little bits of gold give me the magic. You might think I'm looking way too much into it, but what can I say, I'm an English Lit student, reading into things is what I do! And besides, covers are important! In my opinion, it is the cover, not the blurb, that is the first impression someone gets when they pick up your book. The cover needs to say something, and this one certainly does.Anyway, now I've rambled about the covers, on to the actual review...'Horror' as a book genre has never gripped me, and I know exactly why. It's because it never seems to scare me. Fear is one emotion that a book has just never managed to make me feel, and it's not that I'm not easily scared, because I am. I love a good horror movie as much as the next person, but you best believe I'm going to be hiding behind a pillow the entire time. But books just don't make me feel the same sort of fear, and if I'm just not going to read a horror that doesn't scare me. Then I read The Twisted Tree. The first book to make me feel fear. I was scared - but not in a cover my face, something is going to jump out at me kind of scared, but a I can feel this in the pit of my stomach kind of scared. FINALLY! * Feeling Hopeful *
