Book SynopsisIn a time of war, how much would you risk to help a friend? Young Johnny Dunne works hard at Balbriggan’s Mill Hotel, but still finds time to enjoy life with his friends, Alice and Stella. Though the three come from different backgrounds – Johnny had a harsh childhood in an orphanage, Alice is the daughter of the hotel owner and Stella the daughter of the Commanding Officer at the nearby RAF Gormanston. – they’re inseparable, living at the hotel and playing together in the town band. But with the War of Independence raging, the friends face difficult decisions. Stella is pro-British, Johnny is pro-independence, and Alice is somewhere in between. Then Johnny’s secret role, spying for the IRA on the Crown forces, puts him in danger. And Stella and Alice have hard choices to make – choices that threaten their lives …Trade Reviewan Irish historical novel for pre-teens that is both riveting and insightful. Perfect for individual or classroom reading * Sunday Independent *an enjoyable read, while not downplaying the real dangers. Excellent for individual or classroom reading * Children’s Books Ireland Recommended Reading Guide 2017 *a book with a fascinating political background, and Gallagher can be applauded for managing to convey what it must be like to live in a country with such an unstable future, as his characters seem to exist in a constant state of suspense … I definitely grew attached to the characters … this is a stellar choice for preteens with an interest in history, with the advantage of being set in the beautiful city of Dublin, during a fascinating conflict with consequences that were felt for generations * The Bookbag *Gallagher has written an historical novel for young people that is both riveting and insightful. The divisions in the social structure of early 1900's Ireland is perfectly echoed in the three young protagonists, while all three roles are portrayed with compassion and understanding, with their personalities perfectly fleshed out. The complex layers of the War of Independence, both socially and in terms of military action are revealed with a great deal of nuance and fore-thought, as each new episode brings further conflict and increasing violence. There is much here that, while historical, gives pause for thought in today's world events. Painted with great empathy, we are given a view of differing allegiances in conflict with questions of conscience; and an evocative look at the challenge of the fight for freedom. Personal, insightful and still fast-paced and very exciting. (Gallagher is one of the very best writers of historical fiction for young people. I'd also highly recommend his previous book, Arrivals.) * Fallen Star Stories *Gallagher engages his pre-teen readership in the historical events by personalising them through the unfolding fate of young fictional characters … a very successful means of sparking young people’s interest in the country’s past * Evening Echo *the divisions in society are perfectly mirrored in the three main characters * Irish Examiner *a timely look at Irish history by an experienced historical novelist for children -- Irish Independentthis is an evocative account of the dilemmas faced by those who lived through the Irish War of Independence, showcasing how differing allegiances posed problems and challenges … Compellingly written, with great empathy and insight, this is an excellent read * Parents in Touch *

Book SynopsisOn a cold morning, at daybreak, the 304th New York Regiment is waiting to engage with the Confederate army. Among the soldiers is young Henry Fleming, who has enlisted against his mother’s wishes and is now shaken by a sense of fear and regret at the prospect of battle. But when the confrontation begins and, fearing for his life, he escapes from the field, other feelings – above all guilt and shame for deserting and for having retreated without a wound – pierce his heart and eventually force him back into the fray. Although its author never experienced the horrors of the Civil War at first hand, The Red Badge of Courage has often been praised for its realism and the authenticity of its settings and battle scenes, as well as for the nuanced psychology of its protagonist’s internal struggles. Hailed as one of the greatest American novels ever written, it is as fresh today as it was when it was first published over a century ago.Trade Review"The Red Badge of Courage is not a conventional historical novel. Its texture is cinematic; at the same time, breaking the rules, it eschews all reference to time and place." - The Guardian

On the outskirts of Edinburgh, just before the outbreak of WW2, Charlie finds a starving German boy called Josef hiding in the woods near his home. Josef can’t speak English and is desperately afraid, especially of anyone in uniform. Charlie promises to help Josef find his Jewish relatives in the city. It’s a journey that will force them to face their fears, testing their new-found friendship, and Charlie’s promise, to the limit.Trade Review'Poignant, graceful, and relevant for today' Alex Nye“Poignant, graceful, and relevant for today” — Alex Nye“It's 1938 at Morison's Haven, a small harbour on the outskirts of Edinburgh. War is on the horizon, but for young Charlie it seems remote and unlikely; until the first ripple from the conflict breaks on the shore of the Firth of Forth in the arrival of Jozef, a starving German boy, lost and alone, whom Charlie finds hiding in the woods when his schoolfriend Jean ropes him into searching for a stray dog. The terror that Jozef feels, marooned in a new and frightening place, is almost visceral, and made all the more immediate by being told without words. Charlie's empathy bridges the gap between the boys, and Jean provides a headstrong sense of adventure to keep them moving - even if she doesn't always get things quite right! It's a timely reminder of the need for humanity in our approach to people who have lost their homes, their families, their countries, and come looking for sanctuary. Charlie's Promise cleverly weaves a story about a single boy into the overall historical narrative, putting a tired and scared human face on the vast forces of history that are raging just over the horizon in the aftermath of Kristallnacht. Highly recommended.” — John Fulton

Book SynopsisIstanbul, 1593- returning from their previous mission with the death of their Commander weighing heavily upon them, there is no respite for the Ruzgär unit, as they are declared traitors to the Ottoman Empire and banished from the legendary Janissary order. Even the recovery of the fabled Armour of David, so prized by the Sultan is not enough to prevent this. Now, desperate and on the run, Will must turn to the sinister Earl of Rothminster as an unlikely protector. Meanwhile Awa and the remaining Ruzgär, outcasts as far as the authorities are concerned, are nevertheless called upon by their small band of supporters to protect the very people who have declared them enemies of the empire, as a mysterious force threatens to engulf the capital. All roads lead to Istanbul and all who traverse it, will be plagued by a demon’s touch...Trade Review"This is confident, perfectly paced storytelling, a rip-roaring adventure full of narrative surprises. The pace does not let up from page one, and by the conclusion readers young and old will be eager for more from Will and Awa!" --Peter Lerangis, author, The Sword Thief, on A Tudor Turk "Three huzzahs for this scintillating new take on the late Tudor period: a rip-roaring, erudite, cosmopolitan pageturner peppered with the wisdom of ages and glowing with the ruby light of a compassionate heart--a jewel no snaggle-toothed Queen or vainglorious Sultan can buy." --Naomi Foyle, author, The Gaia Chronicles, on A Tudor Turk "Khan's adventure focuses on the Mediterranean region, when the Ottoman Empire, the Republic of Venice, Spain, Portugal and Morocco were jostling, seeking to hold or increase their trading power and influence. The sketching of this backdrop is accompanied by insights into the Arabic culture. . . . Will and Awa are a formidable team whose quests are as exciting as those of many protagonists of modern dystopian or spy novels for this age group. Fights, chases and conspiracy plots make this into a fast moving and exciting read. Khan does not take what could have been the obvious romantic route instead allowing Awa and Will to develop a true friendship based on their respective skills and qualities. . . . Khan's writing is fluent, and the wealth of details enriches the plot without slowing its pace. . . . An insightful, fascinating and gripping story." --Armadillo magazine on A Tudor Turk "Provides an interesting and broader than usual perspective on the world during the reign of Elizabeth 1; a time in which the English Queen seeks to make links with Sultan Murad, powerful ruler of the Ottoman Empire. Through this story and its cast of characters East meets West and rich meets poor providing windows into very different worlds and demonstrating, in particular through the two main characters, how trust, collaboration and a sense of shared purpose bring people together." --Book for Keeps on A Tudor Turk

Book SynopsisOne day, eavesdropping on a phone call, Harold Raab, a writer with nothing to write, hears his roommate refer intriguingly to a woman Harold has never met. Curiosity leads to obsession and to an affair with the married Charlotte Cobin, all of which Harold faithfully records in the notebook that becomes his deeper obsession. As the relationship with Charlotte complicates and darkens, Harold’s poisons emerge. He’s discovered a subject he can write about, but now reveals himself as someone whose intelligence, wit, and sexual delirium mask a terror of human connection. Adrift in the ruins of 1970s Berkeley, he is - like the dark hero of a nineteenth century romance - disastrously unprepared for actual love, and even for life. Originally published in 1982 under the title False Match, and long out of print, The Nenoquich is an unsparing, painful, and often very funny story of fading illusions. It captures a generation at sea, and a seducer out of his depth. This edition includes a new preface by the author.

Book SynopsisWinner, Foreword INDIES Book of the Year: Young Adult Fiction! In Nigeria-born, America-based author Ebele Chizea’s stunning debut novel, teenager Ada and her mother flee the civil war of their West African home and come to America in 1966, where Ada soon discovers—and blossoms within—the US counterculture movement, developing a drive for anti-war activism which she takes with her back to Nabuka only to uncover new truths about herself as well as family secrets that threaten to shatter her plans for the future. While protesting the Vietnam war in America, Ada forges friendships with other nonconformist youth: free-spirited Stacey, a boisterous hippie, and Sal, a philosophical wanderlust. Soon she seeks independence from her mother, love on her own terms, as well as sexual autonomy. College provides Ada with opportunities for academic success, personal experimentation, and full independence, as well as heartbreak. Despite loss and grief over a decade, Ada’s heart becomes her own true compass and guides her to fully become the leader and activist she’d always been deep inside. Chizea's brilliant prose and storytelling skills are fully apparent as she reveals a young woman's struggle to find balance in her life and in herself while straddling physical and social borders of two distinctly different cultures.Trade Review“A must read for those who are nostalgic for the time period of the 1960s and 70s and the music, vibes, colors, and history of Civil Rights activism. If you’re a fan of African narratives of immigration during this fascinating period in history, then Aquarian Dawn needs to be added to your . . . cart ASAP!” —Brittle Paper “This character-driven volume tackles themes such as abandonment, belonging, loss, and racism via a complexly written protagonist whose charismatic personality invests readers from the very first page.” —Publishers Weekly“Chizea offers YA fiction a provocative maturity and thoughtful nuance that reads like Zadie Smith or Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie but nonetheless provides an undoubted and necessary perspective specifically for young audiences.” —The Bulletin of the Center for Children’s Books“Fusing war, politics, love, and confusion in a touching exploration of young womanhood on the brink of national changes, Aquarian Dawn is a memorable novel.” —Foreword Reviews“Ada’s story, every twist and turn, is worth the trip.” —Kirkus Reviews“As soon as one starts reading Aquarian Dawn you are captivated by Ebele's powerful use of language and literary skills and descriptive language. This book is a gem in so many ways as not only is the storyline and Ada, the protagonist, so captivating but the illustrative language is so engaging! A must read!”—Naomi Isted, Award-Winning TV Host; Editor-in-Chief Ultimate Lifestylist “A dazzling debut novel by a dazzling writer whose storytelling shines as bright and liquid as the African sun. Aquarian Dawn and its radiant protagonist Ada Ekene are a gift to the planet with heartfelt observation, sparkling beauty and insight into the perils and promise of growing up, breaking loose, and coming home.” —Lynn Lipinski, author, Bloodlines, God of the Internet, Serpent Loop “Aquarian Dawn is a breathtaking, soulful, and timeless literary masterpiece that will engulf readers in a tsunami of emotions. It will be difficult for us not to see reflections of ourselves in Ada Ekene. Haven’t we all witnessed a dramatic change in the trajectory of our lives at some point? Haven’t we all stumbled upon truths that shook us to our core or attempted to run away from our destiny? Through her debut novel, Aquarian Dawn, Ms. Ebele Chizea –our Griot – presents each of us with a beautiful and powerful story. At the same, Ms. Chizea, in the tradition of Griots from times past, employs words as her instrument—through Aquarian Dawn—to offer us profound life lessons about listening to our soul’s voice, the transcendency of love, embracing our destiny, and the wisdom in unmasking the past.” —Diane Aisha Sears, Managing Editor, In Search of Fatherhood
