Book Synopsis''A wonderful, surprisingly delicate story about a teenager making her way home to Scotland in a world remade by climate change (aimed at YA readers but, like all good children''s books, good for adults too)'' Lucy Mangan, i WeekendIn a world full of checkpoints and controls, can love and hope defy the borders? A searing, timely story, as arresting as it is beautiful. Imagine a world ... Where there are too many people on a too-hot earth and your only chance of salvation is to journey north.Where you must prove yourself worthy of existence at every turn, at every checkpoint.Where your instincts become your most powerful weapon - even more than the gun in your pocket.Where you find out what it takes to survive. An extraordinary story about survival and what it costs, about the power of small kindnesses to change everything. Trade Reviewgripping near-future story -- Suzi Feay * The Financial Times *Set in an another bleak, all-too-imaginable near future, Nicky Singer's The Survival Game (Hodder) follows 14-year-old Mhairi as she returns to her birthplace on the Isle of Arran, with an empty gun, her identity papers and a mute five-year-old in tow. In a world of hard borders, coldly allocated resources, truncated lifespans and judicial murder, traumatic loss has already robbed Mhairi of much of her humanity - has she enough left to keep her soul alive? Singer's bitter, demanding book is shot through with piercingly bright, unforgettable images. * The Guardian *Nicky Singer pulls no punches in this hard, harrowing, skillful story, which shows how thin the facade of civilization is and how easy it is to brutalize not only a person but an entire society. There is hope - at its heart, Mhairi's tale is that of a human being, desensitized by necessity, learning to connect once more. * Armadillo magazine *Teenage readers will find much to savour in Nicky Singer's Survival Game (Hachette) Set in a not-so-distant future, the heroine's troubles and dangerous journey is strangely relevant. Singer's bitter, demanding book is shot through with piercingly bright, unforgettable images. * The Guardian *In this gripping near-future story, Nicky Singer tackles two urgent contemporary issues - global warming and mass migration. Desperate people are moving north, and Scotland is the new destination of dreams. Resilient 14-year-old Mhairi Bain is on her way to the Isle of Arran where her grandmother lives. Travelling alone, she has witnessed horrors that include the deaths of both parents. Tough but not heartless, she has taken pity on a mute African boy on the way.The chapters are short and tense, written in a boiled-down style. As a way of dealing with her trauma, Mhairi has created 'Castle', a mental fortress in which to conceal bad memories. It's a neat narrative device. The pair face many obstacles, dangers and border crossings, dramatizing the plight of the migrant in a world, compellingly evoked here, that is both oddly familiar and yet horrifyingly changed. * The Financial Times *

Pan Macmillan This Song Will Save Your Life
Book SynopsisThis Song Will Save Your Life by Leila Sales is an irresistible novel about hope, heartbreak and the power of music to bring people together. All her life, Elise Dembowski has been an outsider. Starting a new school, she dreams of fitting in at last - but when her best attempts at popularity fail, she almost gives up. In a cry for help, she self-harms, and when news of that gets around school, things get even worse for Elise. But then she stumbles upon a secret warehouse party. There, at night, Elise can be a different person, making real friends, falling in love for the first time, and finding her true passion - DJing. But when her real and secret lives collide, she has to make a decision once and for all: just who is the real Elise?'This book spoke to me on so many levels. I wish I’d had it as a teen' - Marissa Meyer, author of HeartlessTrade Review'if you like good, character-driven contemporary YA, read TSWSYL' Sarra Manning'a beautiful book about the power of music' Lauren Oliver'this book spoke to me on so many levels. I wish I’d had it as a teen' Marissa MeyerThe beginning of the book sees Elise in a quite a dark place. She's working hard on changing her image so she'll fit in at school and when all her attempts fail, she ends up feeling suicidal and harming herself. I have huge respect for the author for taking on these subjects and managing to get inside Elise's head and portray her worries so well. The book also deals with issues like cyber bullying and references eating disorders and binge drinking. I think it's important that books don't shy away from these things and although some scenes may be dark, I was really pleased with how they were addressed. This Song Will Save Your Life managed to balance everything really well so that you feel the emotion but there's enough uplifting moments to keep you entertained as well as moved. -- Total Teen Fiction * http://totalteenfiction.blogspot.co.uk/2013/10/review-this-song-will-save-your-life-by.html *I was just drawn in by everything I read - I liked the music references, I really enjoyed reading about the other characters, whether it was Elise's family or the people at the party. This Song Will Save Your Life is such a real and raw and emotional book, it made me fall in love with Leila Sales and her writing. -- Reading in the Sunshine * readinginthesunshine.wordpress.com *The story is incredible, the way you feel about Elise from the start is powerful because she is just so messed up, she is so alone and so sad about it all. She wants to be happy but just like all 16 year olds she doesn't really know the best way to go about becoming the person she wants to be but have people like her for it. The very start of the book honestly made me sad, really sad, Elise is so low and I could see why and how that felt and I've been there, to the point she was at. It's an awful place to be and it's hard to read about it but I knew I had to keep reading, to see what happened and see where the story goes. It had its hard places, but it also had some great places and I loved how much Elise grew. -- Readaraptor * http://readaraptor.co.uk/this-song-will-save-your-life-leila-sales/ *Unexpectedly crawled under my skin and nestled into my heart where I imagine it will stay for a long time to come -- Jess Hearts Books * http://jessheartsbooks.blogspot.co.uk/ *I haven't given five stars to a book for a very long time . . . one of, if not the best contemporary book that I've read in years. -- Stepping Out of the Page * www.steppingoutofthepage.co.uk *

Bloomsbury Publishing PLC Only the Ocean
Book SynopsisBreath-takingly fierce, smart and tender, Only the Ocean is a story of survival and courage in the midst of darkness that will thrill fans of Patrick Ness and Sarah Crossan. The two girls sat at opposite ends of the boat and Kel dug and stretched the oars into the ocean like her life depended upon it because it did. Just so you know,' said Rose, everything, and I mean everything, is your fault.'Kel Crow lives in a dead-end swamp with her deadbeat family and a damaged heart. But she has a plan to escape. It's a one-two-three fortune story that goes: stow away on the ship, kidnap the girl, swap the girl to pay for passage to America and a life-saving operation. But the ocean is an untameable force, and wrecks ships and plans alike Sweet, raw and uncompromising this is the story of an unforgettable relationship forged on an epic journey.Trade ReviewI was absolutely cheering on Kel and Rose by the end of their stormy salt water odyssey! Wonderful, mesmerising, immersive story telling * Hilary McKay, author of The Skylarks' War *I loved Only the Ocean. It's about a girl who is trying to escape from a dreadful life and an entire deck of cards stacked against her. It's about a girl whose idea of escape and what it could look like has been severely limited by that dreadful life. It's about a dawning sexuality overcoming past trauma and it's about the new, hitherto unimagined, escape routes that love can bring. This all comes wrapped up in Carthew's singular and poetic style, awareness of nature and use of dialect. I thought it was wild and raw and truly, truly beautiful. * Jill Murphy, The Bookbag *Steering clear of well-worn clichés, Carthew’s stories cut to the heart of human experience, often portraying and championing life’s underdogs and outsiders.
