Book Synopsis'Compelling debut. Introduces a significant new voice--has something of the shock effect of Piers Torday's There May Be a Castle and the raw force of Patrick Ness's A Monster Calls.' SUNDAY TIMES CHILDREN'S BOOK OF THE WEEK.'An astonishing exploration of grief and love and wildness.' Hilary McKay. A tale of loss that is also a gripping thriller, a realistic study of grief that skirts the margins of fantasy, it walks wolf-like between worlds and genres. Richard Lambert writes with a poet's eye; he has created something magical here. The storytelling is as bold, sinewy and uncompromising as the beast that shadows Lucas in the mountains above his home. This is a wonderful read and the advent of an exciting new voice in children's fiction. JONATHAN STROUD; A stunning, special debut about love and loss and how the wildness can save us. CHELSEY FLOOD; A smart chilling page-turner that kept me guessing right up to the end. HAYLEY LONG An insightful novel about bereavement, but also about what growing up might involve in a world that actually needs wolves. The Wolf Road is exciting, necessary reading. MONIZA ALVI; Moving, menacing, written with cinematic clarity .ANDREW COWANTrade ReviewTIMES, FINANCIAL TIMES AND GUARDIAN BEST BOOKS OF 2020. 'Masterly, phenomenally poised.'. Financial Times. 'A writer to watch, Lambert's award-winning poetic pedigree stands out in the sparse, gut-punch power of his language.' Guardian. 'One of the most stunning books I've read in years. An astonishing exploration of grief and love and wildness.' Hilary McKay. 'A passionately told story of loss, pain, growing up and adventure to haunt any reader's imagination. Michele Roberts 'A tale of loss that is also a gripping thriller. Book Synopsis'So charming' Elle McNicoll, author of A Kind of Spark 'A wonderful, warm and witty tale of family loss, responsibility and the stories and dreams that unite generations' Alex Cotter, author of The House on the EdgeA heart-warming novel from the Blue Peter Book Award shortlisted author of DANNY CHUNG DOES NOT DO MATHSTwelve-year-old Lizzie Chu lives in Glasgow with her grandad Wai Gong, and he's been acting a little strange lately. He is becoming forgetful, and spends a lot of time talking to his statue of Guan Yin - the Chinese goddess of compassion, kindness and mercy. Lizzie is worried about Wai Gong, but doesn't really know what to do to help him. She's already got a lot on her plate with caring for him, doing the shopping and everything else on top of schoolwork and the usual trials of being twelve! Then Lizzie comes up with a madcap plan. She's going to take Wai Gong on the trip of a lifetime, to Blackpool - to the Tower Ballroom, where he always longed to go, to dance with his late wife Grandma Kam. To rekindle that love for dancing and to see if Wai Gong can find his mojo again. The only problem is - just how on earth is she going to get him there? With a little help from her friends Chi and Tyler, some ingenious costumes and an older brother with a beat-up Mini, Lizzie might just make it - and maybe she will be able to help Wai Gong get better after all?A moving, humorous, and uplifting intergenerational story for fans of Frank Cottrell Boyce and Benjamin Dean.Trade Review'Keep Dancing, Lizzie Chu is brimming with kindness, humour and lovable characters. The story of Lizzie and the obstacles she overcomes to help her grandfather had me laughing out loud on one page and welling up on the next. Maisie Chan is a wonderful storyteller.' -- Kate Gilby-Smith, author of The Astonishing Future of Alex Nobody'Danny Chung Does Not Do Maths is heart-warming and packed with fascinating snippets of Chinese culture. I loved reading about the intergenerational relationship between Danny and his grandmother. We all need a Nai Nai in our lives.' -- Jen Carney, author of The Accidental Diary of B.U.G.Targeted at young readers, [this] uplifting intergenerational story takes them on a rollercoaster ride. Despite being a middle-grade novel, Keep Dancing, Lizzie Chu doesn't shy away from discussing weighty topics about death, loss, grief and illness. It sheds light on the role of young carers and their daily struggles. I believe in this story, it takes a community to support one in need of help and to show that the human spirit is more resilient than what we can imagine. * Books From the Pantry *

  • Cookie! (Book 3): Cookie and the Most Mysterious

Bonnier Books Ltd Cookie! (Book 3): Cookie and the Most Mysterious

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisIn her third adventure, Cookie finds mysteries everywhere - but can she solve them, and save the science show?Hurray, Cookie's Nani is coming to stay from Bangladesh! But she doesn't speak English and Cookie is the only one in the family who doesn't speak Bengali. Luckily, science-mad Cookie realises that her coding lessons at school might help her crack the language code and help her bond with Nani.Other mysteries are harder to solve, though - like, why is Jake's mum acting so weird? Who is the mystery gamer who keeps levelling-up in Cookie's computer game? And who is the Woodburn Hacker, who keeps posting teachers' secrets on the school website? Why does it look like it might be Cookie herself? Can Cookie solve these mysteries, clear her name and save the science show?Trade Review"Cookie! ...and the MOST MYSTERIOUS MYSTERY in the World" is the third in the series of Cookie! books by ex-Blue Peter presenter & author, #konniehuq (published by Piccadilly Press). This third book tells how the series protagonist, Cookie, a London-based girl from a Bangladeshi family & background, narrates her way through trying to solve a series of mysteries. The burning question is: WHO hacked the school website to share lots of teacher secrets online, & WHY?! Add to this an even greater challenge - learning how to communicate with her 'Nani' - her Grandmother, who comes to stay with the family from Bangladesh. Nani does not speak English & Cookie does not speak Bengali, so Cookie learns how to use her coding lessons at school to help her crack her language barrier with Nani. Can Cookie solve these mysteries & complete other challenges along the way, including saving the school science show? You MUST read to find out!The book is written beautifully from Cookie's view point, & one feels sure that Huq has written from her own childhood experiences or memories in many places. Despite the fact that this is the 3rd in the Cookie! series, my children soon got to grips with who the main characters were & were up to speed pretty much immediately with the storyline. My two older children (both boys, ages 10 & 12) really enjoyed reading the story & were utterly spellbound by the Bengali alphabet illustrations in particular. Both agreed that they loved the illustration throughout the book & found it hilarious in many parts. I must admit that my 12 year old picked it up, became transfixed, & didn't put it down until he had finished - all in one evening. I think this speaks for itself! If you want to add a truly lovely story with an entirely amusing and wholly admirable mini-hero(ine) to your young person's stocking this #Christmas, I would wholly recommend this lovely book. I've already been asked for the other books in the series, so guess what my mini reviewers will be getting?!Recommended for ages 7-11, RRP: £10.99, available from all good booksellers & online. * Review Studio UK *

  • The Extraordinary Colours of Auden Dare

Bonnier Books Ltd The Extraordinary Colours of Auden Dare

Book SynopsisI am how I've always been.My name is Auden Dare.I am eleven years old. Auden Dare has an unusual perspective on life: he cannot see in colour. He's always had this rare condition - and life is beginning to get harder for Auden. The war for water that is raging across the world is getting a little closer all the time. It hardly rains any more, anywhere. Everyone is thirsty all the time, and grubby, and exhausted. Auden has to learn to live without his father, who is away fighting, and has had to move to a new town with his mother, and start a new school, where everyone thinks he's a weirdo. But when he meets Vivi Rookmini, a smiling girl bright with cleverness, his hopes begin to lift. It soon becomes clear to Auden, though, that there are some strange things afoot in his new hometown. He and his mother have moved into the old cottage of his recently-dead uncle Jonah Bloom - a scientist and professor at the university. The place is in disarray - and although Auden's mother tells him it's because Jonah was a messy old thing, Auden knows differently. Someone else did this - someone who was looking for something of Jonah's. Auden had heard too that Jonah was working on something that could cure Auden's condition - could this be it? Then Auden and Vivi make an extraordinary discovery. Hidden away under the shed at the bottom of Jonah's garden is an engimatic and ingenious robot, who calls himself Paragon. A talking, walking, human-like robot. Apparently built by Jonah - but why? The answer to this will take Auden and Vivi on a thrilling journey of discovery as they seek to find out just what exactly Paragon is - and what link he has to Auden - and find that the truth is bigger and more wonderful than either of them could have imagined.Trade ReviewFresh, original, funny and moving * The Bookbag *Zillah Bethell's writing is terrifically engaging, confident and highly entertaining. I found it nigh-on impossible to guess the ending which was met with tears of joy. A thoroughly enjoyable read, I was totally involved throughout - in turn laughing out loud, and biting my nails; wincing with every threat and grinning inside with every glimmer of hope * Family Bookworms *A captivating, futuristic adventure about friendship, family and hope. A wonderful gift and perfect for book club discussion * South Wales Evening Post *A war story like no other. A mystery story that keeps you guessing on every page. A sci-fi story of friendship, family and unity. This book has it all! While aimed at 8-12 year olds in my opinion, I would recommend this book to anyone as a fantastic read, however, I think it would also make an excellent class read aloud and would prompt many topical discussions. This book genuinely exceeded all of my expectations * Reading Zone *a thought provoking novel and a definite must for those that like mystery, intrigue and science elements. * Munchkin Megan *I loved this book. It is extremely funny, but also very moving. It made me think about our own society, and the value of friendship. * Scoop Magazine *

They weave themselves together, the fingers knitting their light-made lace until the threads form a fabric heading out of the glass panes and towards the fields. They cross the glass without so much as a shudder. Seo crafts his land.’ Seo Kuroaku has it all. Adopted as a boy by the formidable Sir Neil, he’s the youth champion of Twine, the high-pressured national sport. Played in arenas where thousands come to watch, weavers craft creatures from their fingertips to wage battle against fearsome opponents. But this is a Britain of much darker times - and Seo is harbouring a secret. When he is outed, Twine can’t help him. With the help of his little brother Minjun and Jack, the man he can’t decide if he loves or not, Seo has to find a way to get his life back on track, whilst facing the biggest match of his life. In The Game Weavers, Rebecca Zahabi has created a fantastical yet hauntingly contemporary narrative which is both love story and fable - The Game Weavers is a coming of age story about the importance of intimacy, family and self-acceptance.Trade Review“This is one of those books that I wish was around when I was growing up. A fantastic blend of fantasy, magic, and the very real struggle of learning to love and accept yourself as you really are.” Jade Marie “Zahabi uses the magical game of Twine to challenge the misogyny and homophobia prevalent in many sports, whilst also presenting a sensitive coming-of-age narrative that will be familiar to many gay people struggling with identity.” Rachael, Scorpio Book Dreams “Well thought out and intricate.” Lauren, Northern Plunder “ Rebecca Zahabi has created a really unusual story, blending futuristic fantasy with dystopian undertones and contemporary YA. There are some hard hitting themes running throughout, including explorations of internalised homophobia, which make the story compelling and heart breaking. The Twine magic system is fun and creative but has a dark edge to it.” J J Eden “Rebecca Zahabi is a master at twisting the reality we know into something new and exciting. Game Weavers is easily one of my favourites from the year so far.” The Queen of Teen Fiction “Game Weavers conjures a world fall of love, friendship, family and a character who finds how to truly love himself. Captivating and raw, Zahabi takes us to a world that is equal parts magical and heart wrenching, with characters who fight for what they truly believe in.” Amy Powis, powisamy “A book for modern times - technology, family and finding who you are in the LGBT community.” Chloe Metzger “Fascinating... Very intense.” The Moon Kestrel “The Game Weavers by Rebecca Zahabi tangled its twine around me within the first couple chapters and didn’t let me go.” Imogen’s Typewriter “Zahabi’s immersive world building captures a dynamic game of strategy, not unlike Pokemon or World of Warcraft on the page.” Charlotte Molton at charlottebibliophile.com “Game Weavers is a great story about a professional game player, but far more it’s about family, loyalty, responsibility and finding your own place in this world. It’s a good read for any young adult looking for the confidence to be who they are.” The Brick Castle “A gripping novel of the future of games. The stakes are high; the characters involving; the storytelling direct and elegant.” Geoff Ryman
