  • Contemporary Perspectives on Research on Child

Information Age Publishing Contemporary Perspectives on Research on Child

Book SynopsisChild care environments have received extensive research attention by those interested in understanding how participating in nonparental child care might influence the children's development and learning. Throughout the United States (US Census Bureau, 2011) and Europe (Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development, 2006) a large number of young children are cared for outside of the home by non-parental adults. Young children's nonparental care is commonly referred to as ""child care," and is provided to children whose ages range from birth to 12 years of age. The provision of child care services has become an increasingly important part of early childhood education. In fact, the United Nations Children's Fund (2019) states that a large majority of children worldwide spend at least some of their week in child care, such arrangements include center care, family child care, in-home child care, relative child care, and supplemental child care. Child care researchers have been conducting studies to understand how participating in nonparental child care might influence the children's development and learning outcomes. There are more than enough child care studies to make numerous major inferences. For example, research outcomes show that child care quality seems to be more influential than either the kind of child care or age of admission in determining the children's development and learning. The adults' child care affects the quality in child care. In the environment adults who are caring for the children have the opportunity to effectively assume both nurturing and instructional roles to help young children cultivate their social and cognitive abilities. The teachers' effectiveness is related to their individual characteristics, such as formal education, specialized training, and the classroom environment. However, the majority of the studies show that both family and quality of child care have the most significant effects on the children's development and learning. Therefore, the concept of child care has heavily influenced modern views. Researchers, scholars, and educators are beginning to understand the current foundations based on theoretical frameworks that contribute to the purposes of the child care in the United States and Europe. The contents of the child care volume reflect the major shifts in the views of these early childhood researchers, scholars, and educators in relation to research outcomes on child care, its historical roots, the role of child care in early childhood education, and its relationship to theory, research, and practice.Table of Contents Part I: Historical Foundations and Challenges of Child Care Part II: Structural and Process Quality in Child Care Part III: The Ecoculture of Child Care Part IV: Conclusion About the Contributors

Book SynopsisFinally, here is a book that provides a long-overdue holistic analysis of childcare. Written in a clear style, The Costs of Children breaks new ground in demonstrating how political choices about childcare have different impacts on equality of opportunity in Europe. After reading this book, one never again will view childcare as a private concern. It is essential reading for anyone wanting to understand the realities of European integration, democratic policy-making and the gendered consequences of bearing and rearing children.'- Yvonne Galligan, Queen s University Belfast, UKThis informative book explores the fair allocation of the costs of childcare in European countries and suggests that better choice is required to reduce the current tendency to discriminate against mothers. The expert contributors provide an assessment of how countries can handle the fair allocation of the costs of childcare. They look at the experience within Europe in recent years and show in particular how these interrelate with the objectives of improving income, employment and social inclusion. The study's conclusion reveals that choice is the key ingredient as families have different views and different degrees of support available from their relatives. Income and social inclusion can provide choice but ironically employment does not always. An employment-based model can sometimes narrow people's choices, particularly for people on low wages. The major concern is that most existing systems effectively discriminate against mothers. This is the first book to consider the democratic implications of social welfare systems. It provides an up-to-date assessment of the pressures on parents in deciding how to raise their children under restricted incomes. For many families, practical decisions about childcare are found at a local level. These will depend on the immediate factors that affect them, such as the availability of local nurseries or a family's ability to draw on voluntary networks of support. What is clear, however, is that many of these arrangements discriminate against women. Researchers and practitioners in the field of social policy and childcare in particular will find this book insightful. Graduate students of social policy will also find some practical examples to make their courses more relevant.Contributors include: I. Casier, M. De Metsenaere, R. Dennison, A.L. Ellingsæter, S. Book SynopsisParenthood can be one of the most fulfilling, altering, and challenging life events. This book is set within the background of the reality of many parentsâ return-to-work experience, the task of re-engaging with work and maintaining a job or a career, and the difficulties that parenthood poses for balancing the demands of a new family with the demands of work. It helps us understand this reality, give voice to new parents, and offer relief in the knowledge that we know a lot about these challenges and, most importantly, how we can start to address them. The book brings together a number of internationally recognized experts from research, practice, and policy to explore the issues and offer evidence-based solutions around return-to-work after having children. It takes a balanced approach to theory and practice to cover topics such as equality, stereotypes, work-family conflict, training and development, and workplace culture, among others, whilst integrating research and policy, and illustrating learnings with case studies from parents and examples from countries that lead the way. It will appeal to parents, researchers, and employers in any sector or economy across the world. Ultimately, it will help develop ways for new parents to re-engage with work successfully while maintaining their work-family well-being.Trade Review"What a fascinating book! As both a researcher and campaigner in this area, I welcome the way that the authors have pulled together a terrific mix of contributors from research, practice and policy, to tackle the issues faced by both mothers and fathers in returning to work after childbirth. We have so much to learn from the countries represented here." - Sue Vinnicombe, CBE, Professor of Women and Leadership, Cranfield University, UK"Men and women participate more equally in the labor market than ever before in many parts of the world. This is probably one of the biggest societal changes to come about in the 20th century. Surprisingly, however, the realities and practicalities of such emancipated labor participation are not well studied, nor are they well understood. One of those realities and practicalities concerns having and raising children. Specifically, parents returning to work are an overlooked group. Fortunately, this book charts the territory and gives important pointers as to where to look, what to understand better, and what we can do. This edited collection of 12 chapters by a range of important scholars provides a wide overview of the issues involved. There is attention for stereotype threats, strategies that parents use, the special case of fathers, the career issues involved, and practices that organizations can offer, just to name a few of the topics addressed. The editors, Maria Karanika-Murray and Cary Cooper, expertly organized the materials and provided an inspiring introduction of the issue. They also added a final chapter that is rich in lessons learned and personal reflections. The bottom line appears to be that the issue requires a lot of maturity from parents, organizations, and governments alike: we all can and need to do our part. On a personal level, when reading this book, it is intriguing to see academics trying to get to grips with the challenge of parenting themselves within the current timeframe and context. I wish this book had been around when I first became a parent." - Marc van Veldhoven, Professor of Work, Health & Well-being, Tilburg University, The NetherlandsTable of ContentsList of ContributorsForeword Ann Francke, Chartered Management Institute, LondonForewordLaura Addati, International Labour Organization, GenevaChapter 1. This book takes the reader from before birth through the moment infants come into the world seemingly unable to do much but eat, eliminate, and sleep, and across the few short, incredible years, to when infants are walking, talking, thinking humans with clear preferences, wishes, and dreams, having already forged strong long-lasting relationships. Dispelling common myths and misconceptions about how infantsâ perception, cognition, language, and personalities develop, this accessible evidence-based book takes a novel whole-child approach and provides insight into the joint roles of nature (biology) and nurture (experiences) in infant development, how to care for babies to give them the best start in life, and what it means for infants to become thinking communicating social partners. Topics in this book are covered with an eye firmly fixed on how infantsâ first years set the stage for the rest of their lives. By helping us understand infants, experts Marc H. Bornstein and Martha E. Arterberry give us the opportunity to learn about the resiliency of our species and the many different contexts in which families rear infants. They cover key topics, including how babies are studied scientifically, prenatal development and the newborn period, how infants explore and understand the world around them, how infants begin to communicate, how infants develop an emotional life, personality, and temperament, how infants build relationships, and how parents succeed in bringing up babies in challenging circumstances. This concise clear guide to the years from before birth to 3 is for students of developmental psychology, pediatric medicine and nursing, education, and social work. It also for all parents and professionals caring for infants, who want to understand the secret world of infancy.Table of Contents1. Infancy 2. Growing 3. Thinking 4. Communicating 5. Feeling 6. Book SynopsisThis second edition of A World of Babies brings alive childcare practices in eight contemporary societies, examining the effects that immigration, globalization, war and poverty have on parenting. The book is fully revised and updated, and presented in a unique and creative format of imagined advice manuals to parents.Trade Review'Gottlieb and DeLoache's first edition of A World of Babies earned the right to be called a classic of anthropology. Although one might expect the second volume … to be a simple update of the same studies, Gottlieb and DeLoache have instead done the unexpected - they present an entirely new volume with seven new studies of parenting practices. Taken together, these books set the example of how anthropology, when done well, can open minds to the possibility that there is more than one way to do just about anything, including parenting. I can think of no better way to become a more thoughtful, insightful, and therefore better parent than reading both editions of A World of Babies.' Meredith F. Small, Cornell University, and author of Our Babies, Ourselves'I cannot effuse enough about the second, fully revised edition of A World of Babies! The first edition has been a mainstay in my classroom for over a decade, and I have frequently given it as a gift to new parents. The creative, innovative, quasi-fictional design of both editions - 'imagined childcare guides' authored by ethnographers studying in a broad range of cultures, writing as if they are imparting knowledge to new parents as a childcare expert, such as a grandmother, midwife, or diviner - makes A World of Babies an enjoyable and impactful read for students and new parents alike. At a time when it may seem like there is no 'right' way to raise a child … it is refreshing to read a book which concludes that, in fact, there are many 'right' ways to raise children.' Christa Craven, College of Wooster, and author of Pushing for Midwives: Homebirth Mothers and the Reproductive Rights Movement'This is a fantastic book! I am going to use it right away with both my large undergraduate class and advanced graduate seminar … It [has] an impressive array of authors, each with deep knowledge of the culture for which they are preparing their 'advice'.' Patricia Greenfield, University of California, Los Angeles, and author of Mind and Media: The Effects of Television, Video Games, and Computers'A World of Babies provides terrific and vivid personal examples reminding us of the importance of family, culture, history and context in children's lives in today's globalizing world.' Thomas S. Weisner, University of California, Los Angeles, and co-author of Higher Ground: New Hope for the Working Poor and Their Children'This very accessible yet soundly scholarly book reads like a novel describing the same event from different perspectives, thereby shedding light on the socio-culturally constructed nature of what we might think of as 'objective' and self-evident 'truths' about early child development. A 'must-read' for students and researchers in the area of developmental psychology as well as a great read for anyone interested in the world of babies.' Alexandra M. Freund, University of Zurich, and co-editor of The Handbook of Life-Span Development: Social and Emotional Development'Starting with a most captivating and comprehensive overview of the worldwide challenges facing twenty-first-century parenting, alongside their seven, fictitious, 'composite person' community authors, who could (if real persons) appropriately dispense 'how to' infant care advice, yet again, Professors Gottlieb and DeLoache manage to spin their baby-care magic for both students and professionals alike … the seven new (and one updated) chapters provide, as did the first edition, a sparkling set of 'manuals' but with an even greater degree of wit, clarity, and intimate cultural knowledge, spreading cross-cultural insights that at times shock, amuse, and entertain, but always shed further light on the diverse … ways both biology and culture find expression in how we care for our babies.' James J. McKenna, University of Notre Dame, and author of Sleeping with Your Baby'[A] clever, refreshing, indeed witty way to engage readers … not only in the study of children, childhoods and socialization, but also in the conduct of ethnographic field research and the ways in which we present our work.' Myra Bluebond-Langner, University College London, and author of The Private Worlds of Dying Children'The editors, in the second edition of A World of Babies, have made a great book out of a very good one. The work is unique in combining perspectives not normally found in a single case study … we learn much about the enormous diversity in cultural practices vis-à-vis babies and about the contemporary forces that provoke change and resistance to change.' David F. Lancy, Utah State University, and author of The Anthropology of Childhood'This lively, well-written book is authoritative, but not in the usual way. It's not going to tell you how to give birth or raise your child. Instead, it will tell you many ways to do it, each blending a deep cultural tradition with the modern world. It's the perfect antidote to the worst parenting myth: 'there is one right way, and if I don't find it my child will suffer'. Treat yourself instead to A World of Babies, and encounter a wide world of ways.' Melvin Konner, Emory University, and author of The Evolution of Childhood'They had me at page 1: encountering a few of the differences in beliefs held around the world about raising babies made me eagerly read for more. Students of child development at all levels of education need this book to help them gain perspective on their own culture's child-rearing practices. Practices that appear 'natural' and unquestionable are in fact deeply rooted in physical, cultural and economic realities … The book is brilliant. I can see this book generating extensive discussion and provoking endless consideration of the role of nature and nurture in child development.' Roberta Michnick Golinkoff, University of Delaware, and author of How Babies Talk'This thoughtful and engaging book should be read not only by anthropologists and psychologists but by all expectant mothers. It makes American child-rearing seem distinctly exotic. At the same time, it shows how much all mothers share. The effect is both liberating and moving.' Tanya Luhrmann, Stanford University, and author of When God Talks BackReview of previous edition: 'If you ever find yourself assuming that there's just one right way - your way - to bring up babies, read this book. It's highly enjoyable and such a good idea that I only wish I'd thought of it myself.' Penelope Leach, author of Your Baby and Child, From Birth to Age FiveReview of previous edition: 'Every American parent should reflect on these cultural essays.' Jerome Kagan, Harvard University, and author of The Nature of the ChildReview of previous edition: 'Having a baby is a life-enhancing and mind-extending trip into new lands, much like the marvelous anthropology of child-rearing in this book. Take its expedition and it may help clarify the values and contexts of your own parenting, and bring the world's children into the clearer focus of our knowledge and concern.' Catherine Lutz, Brown University, and author of Schooled: Ordinary, Extraordinary Teaching in an Age of ChangeReview of previous edition: 'Read these pages. This is a very moving book, and a revealing one.' Jerome Bruner, New York University, and author of Child's TalkTable of Contents1. Book Synopsis“Simply the best book I’ve read on how to have those conversations. Unflinchingly honest, exceptionally well-reasoned and researched, there is so much to admire about Speaking of Race.”—Angela Duckworth, founder and CEO of Character Lab and New York Times bestselling author of GritA Boston Globe Most Anticipated Fall BookIn this urgently needed guide, the PBS host, award-winning journalist, and author of We Need to Talk teaches us how to have productive conversations about race, offering insights, advice, and support.A self-described “light-skinned Black Jew,” Celeste Headlee has been forced to speak about race—including having to defend or define her own—since childhood. In her career as a journalist for public media, she’s made it a priority to talk about race proactively. She’s discovered, however, that those exchanges have rarely been productive. While many people say they want to talk about race, the reality is, they want to talk about race with people who agree with them. The subject makes us uncomfortable; it’s often not considered polite or appropriate. To avoid these painful discussions, we stay in our bubbles, reinforcing our own sense of righteousness as well as our division.Yet we gain nothing by not engaging with those we disagree with; empathy does not develop in a vacuum and racism won’t just fade away. If we are to effect meaningful change as a society, Headlee argues, we have to be able to talk about what that change looks like without fear of losing friends and jobs, or being ostracized. In Speaking of Race, Headlee draws from her experiences as a journalist, and the latest research on bias, communication, and neuroscience to provide practical advice and insight for talking about race that will facilitate better conversations that can actually bring us closer together. This is the book for people who have tried to debate and educate and argue and got nowhere; it is the book for those who have stopped talking to a neighbor or dread Thanksgiving dinner. It is an essential and timely book for all of us.

Book Synopsis“One of the best books ever on the experience of being a mother.”—Boston Sunday GlobeTrade Review"An oddly sweet-and-sour but loving memoir about becoming a mother." -- Dwight Garner - New York Times"To write well in the mother-child arena, a person must understand that the essential condition of motherhood . . . is absurdity. Samuel Beckett could have come up with a great book on babies. Anne Enright has." -- Judith Newman - New York Times Book Review"Equal parts wryly analytical and wholeheartedly emotional. She is honest, funny and scandalously frank." -- Dallas Morning News - Merritt Tierce"[A] field guide to both the romance and reality of what it means to create and care for other humans, delivered by narration that evinces deep sincerity and the purest happiness." -- The Dallas Morning News"Anne Enright’s style is as sharp and brilliant as Joan Didion’s; the scope of her understanding is as wide as Alice Munro’s; her sympathy for her characters is as tender and subtle as Alice McDermott’s; her vision of Ireland is as brave and original as Edna O’Brien’s." -- Colm Tóibín"At once a memoir, a reference manual and a cautionary tale about the conflicting emotions of parenthood…. For those who’ve grown weary of hyped-up superparents and their relentless positivity, [Enright’s] candor is welcome." -- More"[Enright’s] first work of nonfiction, Making Babies is a collection of short essays, some of them stream of consciousness, that move chronologically through the landmarks of motherhood. She writes with brutal candor and irreverence about the things that the feel-good baby books don’t tell you…." -- Moira Hodgson - Wall Street Journal"Winning and witty." -- Kirkus Reviews"Keenly observed and gorgeously written… one of the best books ever on the experience of being a mother. Because it’s an experience so many of us share, Enright’s fearless and funny inquiry into why motherhood feels the way it does is not only entertaining, it’s deeply consoling." -- Boston Sunday Globe
