  • The Emotion Cards

Taylor & Francis Ltd The Emotion Cards

    2 in stock

Book SynopsisThe Emotion Cards are 48 emotive and artistic images designed to help people to review their emotions and their relationships in a meaningful and often transformative way. The cards are designed to capture the deeper truth of how people experience their life, offering poignant descriptions for what someone may be feeling. This beautiful resource is also a perfect supplement to Draw on Your Emotions, Margot Sunderland s bestselling book. The second edition of Draw on Your Emotions contains a new section that explains how to get the most out of combining the activities in the book with these cards to encourage meaningful conversations and take steps towards positive action.Intended for use in educational settings and/or therapy contexts under the supervision of an adult. This is not a toy.Trade ReviewJulia Bird, Director of ThriveI am a founding director of a company that supports approximately 1,800 adults working in education to understand if a child has emotional developmental interruptions and what to do to make a difference. We train many teachers and other adults working in schools. Margot Sunderland’s books are recommended reading for those who attend our courses. Our trainees find the Draw On books very helpful in training and then also with their children - not just those children identified for special help. They deal with universal life themes relevant for all. I particularly like the theoretical explanation mixed with superb, doable activities/exercises and copyable handouts.Margot is an acknowledged expert in her field and her passion to make such important understandings and ways of working with troubled children accessible to ordinary people - parents, teachers, support workers - is manifest in the old excellent editions. Her suggestions for the new editions for both books are really exciting. I certainly will recommend the new editions to the people with whom I work. What is needed are work books that give the basic theoretical understanding - e.g. why using imagery is a potent way of supporting children to process feelings - with very usable activities that ordinary people can use to great effect with their children or with the children with whom they work. The addition of the cards will help adults open the conversation with children/young people about difficult feelings. These are a real improvement on the books as they stand now. To have images that are so evocative will enhance the dialogue and give opportunities for all involved to tickle the imagination and make more sense and help the children digest their emotional responses to life situations that cause them such pain and difficulty. The new suggestions will take the work with children from labelling feelings without a real connection to deeper meaning to an integration of feelings, imagination and language that deepen awareness and supports emotional development. The cards will not go out of date as I imagine they will illustrate life’s difficulties that are timeless.I absolutely support the need for updated editions of these superb books and think the cards to be incredibly helpful in supporting children to tell their stories and process trauma.Table of Contents 48 picture cards each with an image and short caption covering different emotional states Short booklet covering suggested usage of the cards and guidance around integrating the productive longer term counselling provided in the linked book, Draw on Your Emotions Captions and booklet translated into German, French, Swedish, Dutch, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese and Japanese

  • Autism

    Taylor & Francis Autism

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisBased on Francesca HappÃâs best-selling textbook, Autism: An Introduction to Psychological Theory, this completely new edition provides a concise overview of contemporary psychological theories about autism. Fletcher-Watson and Happà explore the relationship between theories of autism at psychological (cognitive), biological and behavioural levels, and consider their clinical and educational impact. The authors summarise what is known about the biology and behavioural features of autism, and provide concise but comprehensive accounts of all influential psychological models including âTheory of Mindâ (ToM) models, early social development models and alternative information processing models such as âweak central coherenceâ theory. The book also discusses more recent attempts to understand autism, including the âDouble Empathy Problemâ and Bayesian theories. In each case, the authors describe the theory, review the evidence and provide critical analysis of its value and Trade Review"If you read one book on autism, this should be the one! There is no other account of psychological theories that is as clear, as engaging and as succinct. The authors not only explain what research has revealed about the nature of this complex condition, they critically analyse the impact of the research on the life of people with autism and their families. They break new ground by exploring the consequences of the still new concept of neurodiversity for a future research agenda, and true to their principles, they constructively incorporate comments by autistic people from all walks of life." - Uta Frith, Emeritus Professor of Cognitive Development, University College London."This book gives an accessible overview of psychological theory in regard to autism, including recent developments and controversies. The highlight however is the commentary remarks at the end of each chapter by autistic people. A must read for all those studying autism and those working with autistic people." - Damian Milton, Lecturer in Intellectual and Developmental Disability, Tizard Centre, University of Kent, UK."For more than two decades, Francesca Happé has led the way in explaining the psychology of autistic people to students and experts alike. Now joining forces with Sue Fletcher-Watson, this new introduction brings the voices of autistic people themselves, their families and communities to the forefront of their analysis. The result is a magnificent book that will cause us all to think anew about autistic psychology and experience." - Professor Liz Pellicano, Macquarie University, Australia"This book is a must-read for everyone interested in understanding the current landscape of autism. It includes everything you will want to know from history to biology; from theory to practice; presented in a balanced and lucid style that will engage all readers. The book is remarkable achievement that will, like the first edition, become an instant classic." - Helen Tager-Flusberg, Ph.D., Boston University, USA."For many people, myself included, Francesca Happé’s 1995 book was their gateway to autism research. This update, written with Sue Fletcher-Watson is much-needed and long overdue. Like the first edition, it provides a wonderfully lucid yet concise introduction to psychological accounts of autism. But it also serves as an historical document, reflecting the seismic changes in our understanding of and attitudes towards autism over the past quarter century and the growing voice of autistic people in challenging preconceptions about their own condition and influencing the priorities and goals of autism science." – Dr. Jon Brock, Macquarie University, Australia.Table of ContentsPreface Chapter 1 – Introduction Chapter 2 – The History of Autism Chapter 3 - Autism at the Behavioural Level?Chapter 4 - Autism at the Biological LevelChapter 5 - Autism at the Cognitive Level: What makes a Good Theory?Chapter 6 - Autism at the Cognitive Level: Primary Deficit ModelsChapter 7 - Autism at the Cognitive Level: Developmental Trajectory ModelsChapter 8 - Autism at the Cognitive Level: Domain-General Information Processing ModelsChapter 9 - The Impact of Cognitive Models on Autism Understanding and Practice Chapter 10 - Looking to the Future Bibliography

Book SynopsisSocial cognition is a key area of social psychology, which focuses on cognitive processes that are involved when individuals make sense of, and navigate in their social world. For instance, individuals need to understand what they perceive, they learn and recall information from memory, they form judgments and decisions, they communicate with others, and they regulate their behavior. While all of these topics are also key to other fields of psychological research, it's the social worldwhich is dynamic, complex, and often ambiguousthat creates particular demands. This accessible book introduces the basic themes within social cognition and asks questions such as: How do individuals think and feel about themselves and others? How do they make sense of their social environment? How do they interact with others in their social world? The book is organized along an idealized sequence of social information processing that starts at perceiving and encoding, and moves onTrade Review"It is terrific to see a Second Edition of this marvelous book. It is a superb review of the literature and a remarkable synthesis of a complex and important area of research. The authors are gifted researchers in the area; they know the relevant work thoroughly; and their perspective throughout is unique and tremendously insightful." -Charles M. Judd, College Professor of Distinction, Department of Psychology and Neuroscience, University of Colorado"Social cognition is emerging as the hub of many areas of scholarship in the neurological, behavioral, and social sciences. This timely book presents a remarkably comprehensive and integrative review of the important lessons learned over the last few decades from theory, methods, and research findings in social cognition. The authors, world-renowned social cognition scholars, convey the rich tapestry of social cognitive phenomena as well as shed light on the underlying basic mechanisms. The authors unravel for us the mysteries of the social mind and help us understand why sociality and cognition are inextricably interwoven. Taylor & Francis Ltd Engaging Children in Family Therapy

Book SynopsisA common question at the initial meeting of a family therapist and a new client(s) is often whether or not to include a child or children in the counseling sessions. The inclusion of a child in the family therapy process often changes the dynamic between client and therapist -- and between the clients themselves -- within the context of the counseling sessions. And yet, although this is such a common experience, many counselors and family therapists are not adequately equipped to advise parents on whether to include a child in therapy sessions. Once the child does make an appearance in the counseling session, the therapist is faced with the challenges inherent in caring for a child, in addition to many concerns due to the unique circumstance of the structured therapy. Counseling a child in the context of a family therapy session is a specific skill that has not received the attention that it deserves. This book is intended as a guide for both novice and experienced counselors aTrade Review"Bravo to Catherine Sori and her colleagues for proving a rich conceptual and practical multi-modal approach in this volume! Book SynopsisLooking closely at what happens when translanguaging is actively taken up to teach emergent bilingual students across different contexts, this book focuses on how it is already happening in classrooms as well as how it can be implemented as a pedagogical orientation. It extends theoretical understandings of the concept and highlights its promises and challenges. Using a Transformative Action Research design, six empirically grounded ethnographic case studies describe how translanguaging is used in lesson designs and in the spontaneous moves made by teachers and students during specific teaching moments. The cases shed light on two questions: How, when, and why is translanguaging taken up or resisted by students and teachers? What does its use mean for them? Although grounded in a U.S. context, and specifically in classrooms in New York State, Translanguaging with Multilingual Students links findings and theories to different global contexts to offer important lessons for educTrade Review"Garcia and Kleyn’s text portrays a collaborative project on educating bilingual students. The core of the volume demonstrates how translanguaging is put into practice in actual classroom settings. Applying a transformative action research design in several case studies, the authors show how the concept of translanguaging can transform theory, policy, and practice of education in general and bilingual education in particular."-- TESOL QUARTERLY Vol. 51, No. 4, December 2017Table of ContentsCONTENTS ForewordRicardo Otheguy Acknowledgements IntroductionPART I: TRANSLANGUAGING THEORY AND A PROJECTChapter 1Translanguaging Theory in EducationOfelia García and Tatyana KleynChapter 2A Translanguaging Educational Project Ofelia García and Tatyana KleynPART II: THE CASE STUDIESChapter 3Student Voices Shining Through: Exploring translanguaging as a literary deviceAnn E. Book SynopsisAwareness of peer-on-peer abuse is on the rise and is a matter of increasing international concern. Abuse Between Young People: A Contextual Account is the first book to offer a contextualised narrative of peer-on-peer abuse that moves beyond recognising an association between environments and individual choice, and illustrates the ways in which such interplay occurs.Using both sociological and feminist perspectives, Firmin reshapes the way that peer-on-peer abuse is perceived and investigates the effect of gendered social context on the nature of abuse between young people. This text also uses an in-depth case study to explore associations between abusive incidents and young people's homes, peer groups, schools and neighbourhoods, in addition to broader societal influences such as pornography and politics. Book SynopsisThis insightful guide provides a pragmatic roadmap for treating adult survivors of complex psychological trauma. Christine Courtois and Julian Ford present their effective, research-based approach for helping clients move through three clearly defined phases of posttraumatic recovery. Two detailed case examples run throughout the book, illustrating how to plan and implement strengths-based interventions that use a secure therapeutic alliance as a catalyst for change. Essential topics include managing crises, treating severe affect dysregulation and dissociation, and therapist self-care. The companion website offers downloadable reflection questions for clinicians and extensive listings of professional and self-help resources. A new preface in the paperback and e-book editions addresses key scientific advances. See also Drs. Courtois and Ford's edited volumes, Treating Complex Traumatic Stress Disorders in Adults, Second Edition, and Treating Complex Traumatic StresTrade Review"The state of the art of treating complex trauma, both the basics and the nuances, as summarized by two wise and sophisticated experts."--Judith Lewis Herman, MD, Department of Psychiatry, Harvard Medical School "Both authors have worked extensively with survivors of complex trauma, and share their wisdom and experience in this book. At a time when this clinical population is becoming more visible to clinicians, this thoughtful, extensively documented work is a real treasure. The emphasis on therapist self-care and the ways in which the authors underscore the central importance of therapist self-awareness and self-regulation are particularly valuable. This book will be required reading for all of my interns."--Laura S. Brown, PhD, ABPP, past president, Division of Trauma Psychology, American Psychological Association; private practice, Seattle, Washington "Courtois and Ford, two internationally acknowledged experts, have written a magnificent book on the nature and phase-oriented treatment of complex trauma. Destined to become an instant classic, the book is illustrated throughout with instructive case material. It is at once an excellent guide for the uninitiated and an outstanding resource for experienced clinicians in the field. As most forms of complex trauma occur in interpersonal relationships, the book's emphasis on the therapeutic relationship as the vehicle for healing contributes to its importance."--Onno van der Hart, PhD, Department of Clinical and Health Psychology (Emeritus), Utrecht University, The Netherlands "Finally! We have long needed a clinical guidebook that takes treatment providers through the process of therapy for complex posttraumatic stress syndromes, which are among the greatest challenges that professionals encounter. Courtois and Ford's broad and deep clinical experience shines through in their discussion of assessment, engagement, and treatment--as do their optimism, passion, and hope."--Sandra L. Bloom, MD, founder, The Sanctuary Model "Courtois and Ford provide detailed guidelines for conducting their sequenced treatment approach, from preparation, assessment, and planning, to each of the phases of therapy. The book covers the 'meat and potatoes' of trauma therapy: ensuring client safety, cultivating the therapeutic relationship, and processing trauma memories. It includes strategies from different theoretical approaches and treatment modalities and addresses more complex processes, such as psychic emptiness and dissociation. Written with exceptional clarity, compassion, and respect, and richly illustrated with clinical material, this is an invaluable resource for clinicians."--Sandra C. Paivio, PhD, CPsych, Department of Psychology, University of Windsor, Ontario, Canada-This is a must-have for any clinician working with patients with trauma on a daily basis and for those therapists who do not necessarily have a specialization in trauma, but would like to get more knowledgeable about complex trauma. It should also be a required textbook for graduate students, especially doctoral level students interested in working in and/or researching PTSD situations.--Doody's Review Service, 8/23/2013ƒƒ“Courtois and Ford have demonstrated that they are masters of their subject and are masterful in communicating about the treatment of a very difficult patient population and have contributed a masterpiece in their book….This book is not only essential reading for therapists who want to take on the challenge of treating patients with complex trauma but also an excellent source for any professional who engages in psychotherapy. The reader comes away with not only important tools in establishing a meaningful relationship with patients but also a sense of the gratification that results from treating patients and being a partner in their growth and development.”--Journal of Nervous and Mental Disease, 3/1/2014Table of ContentsForeword by John Briere I. Ray, PhD, LPC-S, NCC, RPT-S, Director, Center for Play Therapy, and Professor, Counseling Program, University of North Texas "This is a unique and needed addition to the play therapy literature--Kottman and Meany-Walen have filled a gap like only they could! The text presents a cross-theoretical, practical perspective, and manages to offer techniques based on theory (no easy task). It should be used for all Introduction to Play Therapy classes and should be in the libraries of all play therapy graduate students, as well as seasoned practitioners."--Daniel S. Sweeney, PhD, LMFT, LPC, RPT-S, Professor of Counseling and Director, Northwest Center for Play Therapy Studies, George Fox University -Provides beginning, intermediate, and seasoned play therapists alike with a unique opportunity to consider various play therapy theories through the use of thoughtful questions. Kottman and Meany-Walen do not just connect with readers as authors, they also connect with them as teachers. Navigating the pages of the book, readers can solidify their theoretical and clinical perspectives and learn enough about alternative theories and approaches to speak intelligently about the clinical decisions play therapists make….There is something special about a book that allows its readers to feel both connected to--and supported by--the authors….Ultimately, the book provides readers with a comprehensive foundation for play therapy.--American Journal of Play, 10/1/2018Table of ContentsPrelude: Once Upon a Time 1. Book SynopsisNow in a revised and updated fourth edition, this trusted text and professional resource provides a developmental framework for clinical practice. The authors examine how children's trajectories are shaped by transactions among family relationships, brain development, and the social environment. Risk and resilience factors in each of these domains are highlighted. Covering infancy, toddlerhood, the preschool years, and middle childhood, the text explores how children of different ages typically behave, think, and relate to others. Developmentally informed approaches to assessment and intervention are illustrated by vivid case examples. Observation exercises and quick-reference summaries of each developmental stage facilitate learning. New to This Edition *Incorporates a decade's worth of advances in knowledge about attachment, neurodevelopment, developmental psychopathology, intervention science, and more. *Toddler, preschool, and school-age development are eaTrade Review"In this fourth edition, Troy has built on Davies's excellent work and has added valuable information and insight for clinicians who believe development matters. Without a firm grasp of a child's developmental challenges and strengths, clinical interventions often become something imposed, rather than something offered and used. Troy’s additions integrate current research and expand our understanding of children’s resources and abilities, making this an invaluable resource for all professionals committed to supporting children as they grow and manage adversities."--Anne R. Gearity, PhD, Department of Psychiatry, University of Minnesota "Child Development, Fourth Edition, not only covers fundamental concepts, but also includes the best current research findings. What results is a book about developmental psychology that is very applicable to a variety of fields. This is a useful text for social work and clinical nursing courses in Human Behavior and the Social Environment, as well as psychology courses in Child Development. The detailed Table of Contents enables the reader to navigate to the content most germane to the task at hand, which makes this a practical reference for faculty, researchers, and practitioners."--Peter J. Pecora, PhD, Managing Director of Research Services, Casey Family Programs, and Professor, School of Social Work, University of Washington "This exceptional text combines principles of child development with foundations for practice. It has been my essential resource for nearly a decade in teaching advanced social work students and early-career clinicians. Davies's text is unique in that it depicts the impact of development on child behavior and the impact of trauma on development, followed by vital practice principles for each developmental stage. I am delighted that Troy has updated the fourth edition with current research as well as changes in DSM-5, and also that the discussion of trauma is not limited to DSM-5 criteria. This text explains and supports assessment and intervention for the developmental impact of disrupted attachment and chronic trauma throughout childhood, helping me to prepare students for practice in a variety of settings, and readying students for lifelong learning of trauma-informed and evidence-based protocols."--Karen Flint Stipp, PhD, LCSW, School of Social Work, Illinois State University "My master's-level clinical psychology students have found this text very valuable either as an introduction to developmental psychology or as a refresher. The practice chapters give students concrete examples of how clinicians use developmental theory and findings to guide conceptualization, diagnosis, and treatment of childhood pathology."--Lisa Comparini, PhD, Department of Psychology and Sociology, Texas A&M–University Corpus Christi-Table of ContentsI. Book SynopsisThis volume provides an in-depth examination of traditional and emerging measures of attachment behavior and representations from infancy to adulthood. Leading authorities share their expertise on the Strange Situation, the Attachment Q-set, Ainsworth's Maternal Sensitivity Scales, the Adult Attachment Interview, the Attachment Script Assessments, and the Adult Attachment Projective Picture System, as well as analogue and experimental methods. The book clarifies the conceptual and empirical underpinnings of the various measures and shows how they fit into a coherent developmental framework. Offering detailed discussions of key constructs such as attachment security, the secure base phenomenon, disorganization, and narrative structure, this is a valuable resource for both researchers and practitioners who use attachment assessments in their work.Trade Review"As interest in the study of attachment beyond the early years of life has burgeoned, a number of new measures for assessing attachment have been developed. In this volume, renowned attachment researchers have organized an excellent array of contributors who have conducted careful work on validating these new measures. The editors have provided a valuable tool for developmentalists, graduate students, pediatricians, clinical psychologists, social workers, and psychiatric researchers. I look forward to using this book in my graduate classes in developmental science, clinical psychology, and developmental psychopathology."--Dante Cicchetti, PhD, McKnight Presidential Chair and Professor, Institute of Child Development, University of Minnesota "Rich in history and theory, this is a compelling work for researchers, clinicians, and students interested in the assessment, measurement, and definition of constructs critical to the attachment system. All in one place, readers can find thorough consideration of the best-validated, state-of-the-art methodologies used to assess attachment throughout the lifespan (including the neglected periods of middle childhood and adolescence). This important guide provides links to measurement manuals; offers insightful tips for observation, scoring, interpretation, and the training of coders and research assistants; and explains key constructs. This is an impressive reference for scholars and practitioners at any level interested in the developmental continuity and intergenerational transmission of attachment."--Jennifer C. Ablow, PhD, Department of Psychology, University of Oregon "In my teaching and advising, I am always asking students: 'How was attachment measured?' Student responses indicate how little attention is given to attachment measurement, making this a timely and needed resource. I can see assigning this book in my doctoral seminar on attachment theory and research. The chapters are written by the leading figures in the field and provide essential information for new and more seasoned researchers, students, and clinicians. Book SynopsisHow children are taught to control their feelings and how they resistthis emotional management through cultural production. Today, even young kids talk to each other across social media by referencing memes, songs, and movements, constructing a common vernacular that resists parental, educational, and media imperatives to name their feelings and thus control their bodies. Over the past two decades, children's television programming has provided a therapeutic site for the processing of emotions such as anger, but in doing so has enforced normative structures of feeling that, Jane Juffer argues, weaken the intensity and range of children's affective experiences. Don't Use Your Words! seeks to challenge those norms, highlighting the ways that kids express their feelings through cultural productions including drawings, fan art, memes, YouTube videos, dance moves, and conversations while gaming online. Focusing on kids between ages five and nine, Don't Use Your Words! situates these prodTrade Review"Juffer raises provocative questions concerning children’s emotions... Recommended. Graduate students, researchers, faculty." * Choice *"Juffer values children’s media, demanding that we pay attention to how influential their cultural production is. Including cultural analyses of Blue’s Clues to YouTube, electoral politics to immigration policy, and education to affect theory, Juffer deepens each field as much as she puts them in conversation with each other through careful, deliberate inspection. Her discussions of emotional intelligence, expression, and management are woven alongside her treatment of children’s drawings, art exhibitions, and writings in a way that expands the scope of contemporary media studies. Don’t Use Your Words! is a great accomplishment and a true gift to us all—children, parents, and scholars alike." -- Sarah Projansky, author of Spectacular Girls: Media Fascination and Celebrity Culture"[Juffer] develops a theory challenging the idea that children cannot be viewed as having emotional intelligence. Book SynopsisThis popular book provides a compelling introduction to thinking about childhood in rigorous and critical ways. Karen Wells offers a unique global perspective on children’s lives, showing how the notion of childhood varies widely and is continuously being radically re-shaped. Taking children seriously as active participants in society, the book explores key social issues such as how children are constituted as raced, classed and gendered subjects; how school and work operate as sites for the governing of childhood; and how children both shape and are shaped by politics, culture and the economy. Taking an engaging historical and comparative approach, the book discusses wide-ranging topics including children’s rights, the family, play, labour, migration and trafficking. In addition to updated literature throughout, this revised third edition includes extensive new material on children’s activism, politics and war, and a whole new chapter on juvenile justice. The book will continue to be of great value to students and scholars in the fields of sociology, geography, social policy and development studies. It will also be a valuable companion to practitioners whose work involves or impacts children, as well as to anyone interested in childhood in the contemporary world.Trade Review“The third edition of Karen Wells’ acclaimed work […] makes a persuasive case […] why solutions to contemporary insecurities of childhood must be found through addressing structural inequalities not through ever greater scrutiny of individual children and their families.”International Journal of Law, Policy and The Family “This refreshed third edition by Karen Wells is engagingly written, drawing on a wide range of international literature on childhood. Lucidly presented, with a clear-eyed focus on key debates surrounding childhood, the summaries and further reading make it a ‘must read’ student text for anyone with an interest in Childhood Studies.”Anoop Nayak, Professor in Social & Cultural Geography, Newcastle University, UK. “Childhood in a Global Perspective offers a superb analysis of the structural forces and everyday practices that shape childhood today. Book SynopsisValidation is the recognition and acceptance that a person's feelings and thoughts are true and real for him or her, regardless of whether or not those feelings make logical sense. This seemingly simple concept can determine whether a child has self-esteem or not, whether a child will grow to become an independent adult or a dependent one, and whether a child will be able to process feelings in a healthy way or express his or her emotions by throwing tantrums and acting out. Children who are validated feel reassured that they will be accepted and loved regardless of their feelings, while children who are validated less frequently become more susceptible to peer pressure and are more likely to develop behavioral problems. The Power of Validation breaks validation skills into practical steps parents can use to respond to their child's internal experiences in healthy ways without necessarily condoning their child's behaviors. Readers learn to pay attention to their child, acknowledge the child's thoughts and feelings, and help their child through the process of developing an identity of his or her own. By validating difficult emotions, but disallowing negative actions children may take in response to these emotions, parents can help their kids develop essential self-validating skills for the future that will foster self-esteem and emotional intelligence in adulthood.

Book SynopsisThis book provides an account of how the 'Theory of Attachment-Based Exploratory Interest Sharing' (TABEIS) and the practice of Goal Corrected Empathic Attunement (GCEA) was used in a university setting to support staff. It works in three ways; firstly, it raises attachmentt theory, one of the pillars of self-understanding, into a central place in terms of reflecting on and learning from the dynamics of business and organisations. Neath explores how well this attachment theory sits with other theories of self and relationships such as transactional analysis and the person-centred approach.Secondly, it is an account of how Neath took an application of McCluskey's theory 'The McCluskey Model for Exploring the Dynamics of Attachment in Adult Life' to the University of Leeds, with learning points made along the way, exploring the practice of a therapeutic-style of group facilitation, and reflection on good practice for professional adult learning and teaching techniques. Thirdly, it will act as handbook for anyone wishing to replicate Neath's work and it includes feedback from the participants both during and after the training process. It will appeal to those new to training, counselling, organisational developers and those wishing to enjoy and see the potential the work of McCluskey.Trade Review"This book is treasure for all of you who are aware that feelings and emotions matter when we think about how to create a work environment that is healthy for its members and at the same time productive from the organisational perspective. Book SynopsisConcise and easy-to-understand, this book provides an introduction to what attachment means and how to recognise attachment disorder in children. Book SynopsisSocial Stories™ are acknowledged as a very successful way of teaching concepts and social understanding to children with autism spectrum disorders, but considerable skill is needed to write the most effective story. This clear and engaging book introduces ways of thinking about the issues your child finds difficult, and includes 32 stories created by Dr Siobhan Timmins for her son during his early years, with helpful explanations of how she did it, and what the underlying thinking was behind each set of stories. She explains how the stories build upon each other to help the child to understand further, more complex topics, and how to see the connections so that you can best help your child. From basic skills such as learning to listen, wait and share, to common fears, this book takes the mystery out of creating effective Social Stories™ and amply demonstrates how to put together a cohesive set of stories which your child can understand and relate to.Trade ReviewThis book is an invaluable contribution to the body of published information and guidance on Carol Gray's Social Stories(TM). Siobhan shares her insightful thinking and information gathering which results in impeccable stories for her son Mark. Her stories and the strategies she uses to ensure true social understanding will be inspirational to all parents and professionals. -- Eileen Arnold, former specialist speech and language therapist and co-author of Revealing the Hidden Social Code: Social StoriesTM for People with Autistic Spectrum DisordersLife can be confusing and overwhelming for a child who has autism. Social StoriesTM provide information, reassurance and guidance not only for the child, but also for parents and teachers. The background to the creation of each Social Story explores a range of aspects of autism, and the rationale and rules for Social StoriesTM. The subsequent text and delightful illustrations are both informative and effective. I am sure, also, that readers will quietly smile, and sometimes laugh, when they read these delightful Stories. -- Tony Attwood PhD, clinical psychologist, Minds & Hearts Clinic, Australia, and author of The Complete Guide to Asperger's SyndromeCarol Gray's Social Stories are known to virtually everyone associated with Autism Spectrum Disorders. In this new book, Siobhan Timmins, parent of a child with ASD who studied under Carol Gray, helps to further explain Gray's Social Stories as a way of assisting children with ASD to control behaviors and function at a higher level. The book gives a clear, detailed, and thoughtful explanation of the central ideas behind Social Stories and demonstrates how to implement the strategies with wonderful examples and terrific pictures. Anyone interested in the ideas and strategies behind Social Stories will love this clear and in depth elaboration of the theories and practices and the delightful examples of how to implement them. -- Gary B. Mesibov, Professor Emeritus of Psychology and Emeritus Research Fellow at the University of North Carolina at Chapel HillSiobhan notes her distaste of Social Stories being used to tell the child what they are doing wrong; those stories that she shares with us in the book are all written in fond, positive, tolerant terms as they always should be. Importantly, she tells readers that "Social Stories will not cure your child of autism, nor are they the only useful strategy to implement, but they are effective, enduring and empowering to both parent and child, a powerful partner on your walk with autism and I speak from experience!" ... Book SynopsisAs children grow up and spend more and more time away from home in schools and colleges, life often seems to get increasingly complicated. Autism makes the challenges they meet in these new environments even more difficult to navigate. Social Stories™ is a highly regarded strategy that parents and teachers can use to help young people with autism understand the new social situations they face during this time. Writing an effective Story takes a special set of skills, and in this fully illustrated book Dr Siobhan Timmins explains how to acquire and hone these techniques and put them into practice.Following on from her book on writing Social Stories™ for young children, this book on the next age group up includes 160 illustrations and clear examples based on the author's own experiences of raising a son with autism. She explains how to identify the underlying issues, and articulate the key ideas so that young learners can find connections between Stories to build a greater understanding of relationships, the adult world and their own identity. The book is an invaluable guide to creating bridges between young people and the parts of life they find most difficult.Trade ReviewThe context-setting, that helps further understanding of autistic thinking is superb, as are the examples of the social stories themselves. • Innovative Therapeutic Life Story Work:

Jessica Kingsley Publishers Innovative Therapeutic Life Story Work:

Book SynopsisLife story work is an approach designed to enable traumatized children to explore, question and understand the past events of their lives. It aims to secure their future by strengthening attachment with their carers and providing the opportunity to develop a healthy sense of self and a feeling of wellbeing. This new edited volume documents innovative ways in which life story work has been developed. It draws on the work of nine life story centres based around the world and provides understanding and guidance for those working with children who have experienced trauma. The book illustrates current theory and practice and looks at how the approach is being used in a variety of settings including schools, intensive services, youth justice, and post-adoption support, highlighting its versatility. The importance of trauma-informed practice when working with vulnerable children is emphasised throughout, to help practitioners provide the best for the children in their care.Trade ReviewInnovative therapeutic life story work explores a highly creative way of working, safely, compassionately and effectively with the most painful aspects of children's life stories. It is a must for any child professional wanting to help traumatised children make sense of their lives, and see the connection between what has happened to them in the past and how they experience themselves and others now. Through moving case material and a wealth of practical ideas, practitioners from all over the world, convey the child's sheer relief at having at last found their voice and established a coherent narrative for their lives. -- Dr Margot Sunderland Director of Education and Training, The Centre for Child Mental Health LondonThis latest book by Richard Rose and colleagues reflects the essence of therapeutic life story work, whereby the worker holds out one hand to the child and the other hand to the carer and says to the child 'show us your world.' Something very special happens when a child takes your hand in trust when crossing the road and this is a tough road to cross. In this book, Richard and colleagues show us the world of therapeutic life story work and what it looks, feels and sounds like, so we too can help children make this journey of discovery. -- Annette Jackson - Regional Director Berry Street Gippsland, Australia (Adj Assoc Professor La Trobe University)My initial hope - that I would be able to learn from this book about how life story work is best used - has definitely been fulfilled. But, in addition to that, where young people have not had the opportunity to write their life stories, in a way that is meaningful to them, I can now confidently help them to work through this process and gain deeper insight. I would recommend this book to anyone working with young people who may have experienced some form of trauma and now seek to understand this more fully. -- Trisha Packer, counsellor and supervisor * BACP - Children, Young people & families *I recommend this comprehensive study as essential reading for practitioners across the world working with children who have experienced adverse childhood experiences and very commonly experience feelings of self-blame and shame. Book SynopsisThis direct guide supports practitioners in nurturing personal, social and emotional development (PSED) in young children by demystifying brain development research. Condensing a wealth of recent research and theory around PSED into practical guidance, it gives professionals the knowledge and understanding they need to critically evaluate their own practice and find the best course of action to support PSED in young children. From the perspective of neuroscience, it explores what can help or hinder development, considers why some children bite and why toddlers have tantrums, and questions how well-intentioned actions, such as reward systems or putting new foods on a plate for children to 'just try', may be misguided.Trade ReviewIn this remarkable book, Debbie Garvey has brilliantly analysed both the reasons and the techniques for nurturing PSED. From theory and neuroscience to lifelong practice via well meaning, wellbeing and the importance of listening, Debbie explains it all in a thoroughly engaging, affable style. Most importantly, she inspires genuine, and sometimes challenging, self-reflection on practice, using some novel, intriguing and effective methods. -- Kathy Brodie, Early Years Professional and TrainerIn this stimulating and provocative book Debbie Garvey has provided inspiring and practical narratives, underpinned by neuroscientific evidence and a clear values set, which creates a reflective and action focused agenda for all those who work with young children. I believe anyone who reads this book will be inspired and motivated to challenge and extend their thinking and professional practice, adopting the critical and nurturing stance which lies at the heart of quality services for children and families. -- Professor Chris Pascal, Director, Centre for Research in Early ChildhoodThis book is designed to challenge thinking and aid reflective practice, to consider whether current practices are fit-for-purpose, and whether you are fully supporting young children. This is accomplished through debate on theory, case studies and numerous examples of best practice. The final chapter brings everything together by looking at how the theory of the preceding chapters can be turned into lifelong practice. Book SynopsisThis essential book shows practitioners how they can engage with teens' online lives to support their mental health. Drawing on interviews with young people it discusses how adults can have open and inquiring conversations with teens about both the positive and negative aspects of their use of online spaces. For most young people there is no longer a barrier between their 'real' and 'online' lives. This book reviews the latest research around this topic to investigate how those working with teenagers can use their insights into digital technologies to promote wellbeing in young people. It draws extensively on interviews with young people aged 12-16 throughout, who share their views about social media and reveal their online habits. Chapters delve into how teens harness online spaces such as YouTube, Instagram and gaming platforms for creative expression and participation in public life to improve their mental health and wellbeing. It also provides a framework for practitioners to start conversations with teens to help them develop resilience in respect of their internet use. The book also explores key risks such as bullying and online hate, social currency and the quest for 'likes', sexting, and online addiction. This is essential reading for teachers, school counsellors, social workers, and CAMHS professionals (from psychiatrists to mental health nurses) - in short, any practitioner working with teenagers around mental health.Trade ReviewWorried about young people's use of the internet? Worried about its effect on their mental health? This book is informative, wise and realistic, exploring ways young people can be helped to be resilient and thoughtful as they embrace the opportunities and challenges of the internet. Parents and professionals will find this book extremely enlightening and practical. -- Nick Luxmoore, Psychotherapist, Trainer, Supervisor and AuthorAs both a parent and a professional, I love that this book draws on the emerging evidence base as well as consultation with teens, parents and professionals to provide practical guidance on how to promote positive mental health in an online world. It's a tough topic and there's a real disconnect between the generations; this book bridges the gap beautifully. -- Pooky Knightsmith, Mental Health Author and EducatorAt last! A practical guide that cuts through the media scaremongering about digital technology and youth mental health, and offers evidence-based advice for parents and practitioners. I love the way that teen voices and stories are woven into this essential book. Betton and Woollard give sage advice: forget about banning, blaming and educating our young people; if you want to attain true (h)appiness you must: explore, inquire and ally. -- André Tomlin, The Mental ElfUnderstanding the benefits, risks, and new horizons for teen mental health in the digital age is of critical importance for parents, teachers, clinicians, and policy makers. Renowned subject experts, Victoria Betton and James Woollard, now offer the first authoritative and comprehensive synthesis of the topic in this delightfully accessible and engaging text. Highly recommend for those seeking actionable knowledge and key insights at the intersection of the digital world and teen mental health. -- John Torous MD MBI. Director of Digital Psychiatry at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Harvard Medical SchoolIn all the gloomy, even punitive talk about teens and social media, this spirited volume is most welcome. Betton and Woollard don't shy away from the worrying evidence of youthful mental health problems. But they weigh that evidence fairly, interpret it carefully, and set it in the context of the opportunities afforded by digital media. As they rightly ask, now that children grow up immersed in the digital age, what matters is what we - the responsible adults - do to support their mental health and their rights. Their many constructive suggestions point the way for parents, teachers, policy makers and others: I hope these adults are listening! -- Sonia Livingstone, author of The Class: Living and Learning in the Digital Age, London School of Economics and Political ScienceTable of ContentsChapter 1.
