Child and developmental psychology Books
Cambridge University Press Origins of Possession
Book SynopsisThe way in which we acquire and become attached to our possessions reveals both the similarities and differences between humans and other animals as psychological entities. This book discusses the psychology surrounding how humans experience possession, claim ownership, and share from both a developmental and cross-cultural perspective.Trade Review'Throughout his work, Philippe Rochat attempts to identify what is uniquely human. In this book he yet again moves one step closer to a truly intellectually satisfying description. Origins of Possession is essential reading for all those of us who are in the profession of working with the human mind, particularly when it is troubled and is at risk of losing its essential qualities of self-awareness and symbolization. It is a highly significant contribution which builds on Rochat's unparalleled depth of understanding of child development to deliver a view of the nature and experience of possession that transcends development and individual differences - and illuminates both - whilst striking very close to what lies at the core of our experience of ourselves and of others as sentient beings.' Peter Fonagy, Freud Memorial Professor of Psychoanalysis and Head, Research Department of Clinical, Educational and Health Psychology, University College London'This is a rare, unique, and exciting book that could not have been written except by a scientist who, like Darwin, has travelled to diverse places and made the insightful observations that open a new perspective on everything of concern to human psychology. Rochat probes a concept so central and pervasive that it is commonplace: possession. He develops a psychology that penetrates deeply into philosophical and ethical realms, and that raises questions that to my knowledge have not been raised before about issues relevant to the development of the most important aspects of social life, issues that pertain to something so basic that it drives sex and violence and has the potential to realign our understanding of economics, law and social formation, as well as individual existence.' Shaun Gallagher, Lillian and Morrie Moss Professor of Excellence, University of Memphis'Philippe Rochat has been studying children across cultures with a unique combination of curiosity, empathy, and insight. This important book challenges our understanding of their psychology - and of human psychology generally - and opens new directions of research. A highly pleasurable and stimulating read!' Dan Sperber, author of Explaining Culture, and co-author of Meaning and Relevance'One might think that the topic of possession is clearly delimited and somewhat specialized. In this masterful work Rochat shows that nothing could be farther from the truth. Possession, as Rochat conceives it, is an integral part of all of the most important aspects of human experience. A most enlightening piece of work - and a joy to read.' Michael Tomasello, Co-Director, Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology'Relying on Rousseau's 'Second Discourse', Rochat shows how the idea of property led humans to abandon a natural state of sharing with all other animals to a state in which claims of ownership, combined with the acceptance of such claims by others, set a new standard for civil society based on possession. Rochat creates a fascinating discourse by integrating ideas from philosophy, biology, sociology, and anthropology to understand the development of laws of property in Western and non-Western cultures and the impact of these cultural systems on the psychological development of a sense of possession across the life span … Summing up: highly recommended. Upper-division undergraduates through faculty and professionals.' R. B. Stewart, Jr, ChoiceTable of ContentsIntroduction: making sense of human possession; Part I. Dr Patty Cogen, psychotherapist and author of Parenting Your Internationally Adopted Child'Dr Gindis taught me so much about learning challenges and behavioral issues when I was evaluating patients before and after their adoption. This book is a great contribution that explains the traumatic aspects in the lives of orphans coming from orphanages.' HarperCollins Publishers Inc BrainBody Parenting
Book SynopsisNATIONAL BESTSELLERFrom a leading child psychologist comes this groundbreaking new understanding of children?s behavior, offering insight and strategies to support both parents and children.Nominated for Malcolm Gladwell, Susan Cain, Adam Grant, and Daniel H. Pink''s Next Big Idea ClubOver her decades as a clinical psychologist, Dr. Mona Delahooke has routinely counseled distraught parents who struggle to manage their children?s challenging, sometimes oppositional behaviors. These families are understandably focused on correcting or improving a child?s lack of compliance, emotional outbursts, tantrums, and other ?out of control? behavior. But, as she has shared with these families, a perspective shift is needed. Behavior, no matter how challenging, is not the problem but a symptom; a clue about what is happening in a child?s unique physiologic makeup.InBrain-Body Parenting, Dr. Delahooke offers a radical new approach to parenting based on her clinical experience as well as the most recent research in neuroscience and child psychology. Instead of a ?top-down? approach to behavior that focuses on the thinking brain, she calls for a ?bottom-up? approach that considers the essential role of the entire nervous system, which produces children?s feelings and behaviors. When we begin to understand the biology beneath the behavior, suggests Dr. Delahooke, we give our children the resources they need to grow and thrive?and we give ourselves the gift of a happier, more connected relationship with them. Brain-Body Parenting empowers parents with tools to help their children develop self-regulation skills while also encouraging parental self-care, which is crucial for parents to have the capacity to provide the essential ?co-regulation? children need. When parents shift from trying to secure compliance to supporting connection and balance in the body and mind, they unlock a deeper understanding of their child, encouraging calmer behavior, more harmonious family dynamics, and increased resilience.

Random House USA Inc Growing Young
Book SynopsisNATIONAL BESTSELLERA smart, research-driven case for why optimism, kindness, and strong social networks will help us live to 100.From the day her daughter was born, science journalist Marta Zaraska fretted about what she and her family were eating. She fasted, considered adopting the keto diet, and ran a half-marathon. She bought goji berries and chia seeds and ate organic food. But then her research brought her to read countless scientific papers and to interview dozens of experts in various fields of study, including molecular biochemistry, epidemiology and neuroscience. What Marta discovered shattered her long-held beliefs about aging and longevity. A strong support network of family and friends, she learned, lowers mortality risk by about 45 percent, while exercise only lowers it by about 23 percent. Volunteering your free time lowers it by 22 percent or so, while certain health fads like turmeric haven't been shown to help at all. These revelations led Marta Zaraska to a simple conclusion: In addition to healthy nutrition and physical activity, deepening friendships, practicing empathy and contemplating your purpose in life can improve your lifespan. Through eleven chapters that take her around the world, from catching wild mice in the woods of central England to flower arranging with octogenarians in Japan, from laboratories to hugging centres, Marta embarks on an absorbing, entertaining and insightful journey to determine the habits that will have the greatest impact on our longevity. Deeply researched and expertly reported, Growing Young will dramatically change the way you seek a longer, happier life.

Penguin Young Readers The Child Code
Book SynopsisA provocative, science-based approach to parenting centered on a child’s unique genetic “code,” from an award-winning developmental psychology professor and researcher. With few exceptions, parenting books, websites, and podcasts emphasize the critical role of the parent in shaping a child’s destiny. But the obsession with parenting ignores a fundamental biological fact: that genetics affect every aspect of human behavior, and every child is uniquely “coded” with predispositions that affect everything from fearfulness, to impulsivity, to happiness. In The Child Code, award-winning professor Dr. Danielle Dick draws from her research in developmental behavior genetics to debunk the myth that parenting techniques alone can determine a child’s behavior and future. Dr. Dick introduces readers to the 3 E’s that underlie each child’s unique predisposition—extraversion (Ex), emotionality (

Penguin Putnam Inc Play to Progress
Book SynopsisA game-changing book on child development--and the importance of physical play--for this digital and screen age.For children to develop to their fullest potential, their sensory system—which, in addition to the big five of sight, hearing, taste, touch, and smell, includes movement and balance (vestibular), body awareness (proprioception), and internal perception (interoception)—needs to be stimulated from the time they are born. Their senses flourish when they explore their environment by touching new textures, including their food, running, jumping, climbing, and splashing outside. As an occupational therapist with a specialty in sensory integration, Allie Ticktin has seen an increase in cases of children who struggle to sit in circle time or at their desk upright and who are delayed in walking, talking, and playing by themselves and with their peers. In the recent past, kids spent their days playing outside and naturally engaging their s

John Wiley and Sons Ltd How Socialization Happens on the Ground
Book SynopsisThis monograph builds upon our cumulative efforts to investigate personal storytelling as a medium of socialization in two disparate cultural worlds. Drawing upon interdisciplinary fields of study that take a discourse-centered approach to socialization, we combined ethnography, longitudinal home observations, and micro-level analysis of everyday talk to study this problem in Taiwanese families in Taipei and European-American families in Longwood, Chicago. Comparative analyses of 192 hours, of video-recorded observations revealed that convserational stories of young children''s past experiences occurred in both sites at remarkably similar rates and continued apace across the age span, yielding nearly 900 narrations. Thse and other similarities coexisted with differences in culturall salient interpretive frameworks and participant roles, forming distinct socializating pathways. The Taipei families enacted a didactic framework, prolifically and elaborately narrating and correcting childrTable of ContentsAbstract I. Introduction II. Book SynopsisRecognized as a finalist for the CAE 2018 Outstanding Book Award!Part historic ethnography, part linguistic case study and part a mother's memoir, Kisisi tells the story of two boys (Colin and Sadiki) who, together invented their own language, and of the friendship they shared in postcolonial Kenya. Documents and examines the invention of a new' language between two boys in postcolonial Kenya Offers a unique insight into child language development and use Presents a mixed genre narrative and multidisciplinary discussion that describes the children's border-crossing friendship and their unique and innovative private language Beautifully written by one of the foremost scholars in child development, language acquisition and education, the book provides a seamless blending of the personal and the ethnographic The story of Colin and Sadiki raises profound questions and haTrade Review"The book is a fascinating account of the genesis of the language in a region where relatively rich American and European settlers and researchers interact with the economically challenged locals. They cooperate with each other, despite experiences of separation, habitats with invisible physical boundaries, sentiments of contempt and respect, situations of embarrassment, and the feeling that it is impossible to change this society with so little social justice and legal equality. The author does not condemn anyone, but she shows her indignation about the hidden and overt racism and the unjust distribution of privileges. These boys were able to transgress the symbolic borders, breaking all the unwritten rules, among others by creating a new language with its own structure. The book is worth reading both for the social aspects of life in Kenya and for the linguistic aspects."--Peter Bakker, Journal of Pidgin and Creole Langauges 32.2 "The book stands in contrast to many of the prevailing theories at the time about the formation of new languages. Throughout the book, the author looks critically at linguistic theories of language formation that were prevalent at the time and contrasts them the development of a language between her son Colin and his Kenyan friend, Sadiki. This comparison is used to show how the field of linguistics developed to the point where language creation among children, with no outside help from adults, would be seen as possible. Thus, her research adds to the scholarship on language development in children, a research area that is lacking in linguistics literature."--Eric Baptiste, Anthropology Book Forum Table of ContentsAcknowledgments ix Map xiii Prologue xv 1 Uweryumachini!: A Language Discovered 1 2 Herodotus Revisited: Language Origins, Forbidden Experiments, New Languages, and Pidgins 17 3 Lorca’s Miracle: Play, Performance, Verbal Art, and Creativity 35 4 Kekopey Life: Transcending Linguistic Hegemonic Borders and Racialized Postcolonial Spaces 58 5 Kisisi: Language Form, Development, and Change 93 Epilogue 132 In Memoriam 137 Notes 138 References 146 Index 157
