Edward Elgar Publishing Ltd THE VOLUNTARY SECTOR, THE STATE AND SOCIAL WORK
Book SynopsisThe story of welfare politics in Britain has usually been told in terms of a simple shift from individualism to collectivism and ever increasing amounts of state intervention. The Voluntary Sector, the State and Social Work in Britain offers a different perspective which shows that Britain has always had a mixed economy of welfare with the voluntary sector playing a major role. This book traces the ideas and practice of one of the most influential voluntary organisations, the Charity Organisation Society, which became the Family Welfare Association in 1946. It examines the meaning of voluntary personal social service, which became social work, and the nature of the shifting balance in social provision between the voluntary and statutory sectors from the late nineteenth to the twentieth century.By taking a long view, this volume highlights the important shift in the meaning of 'partnership' between the state and voluntary sectors from the 'separate spheres' philosophy of the late nineteenth century to the more complementary, supplementary relationship of the mid-twentieth century, and finally to the pressure now being exerted on voluntary organisations to become alternative providers of social services. Through the history of the Family Welfare Association, the book traces the development of social work from voluntary work, which was seen as integral to ideas about social theory and social change, to professional practice which was forced to seek new relationships with the state and voluntary sector. As well as presenting a substantial history of a very significant charitable organisation, this important book analyses the nature of welfare provision over time and provides an in depth treatment of the development of principles and concepts relevant to current debates.Trade Review'Professor Lewis has made a characteristically crisp contribution both to the history of voluntarism and to the current debate on its future. I particularly like the way in which she identifies both the continuities and the changes in the issues that the Family Welfare Association has had to address over its long history.'Table of ContentsContents: Preface Introduction Part I: 1. City University of Hong Kong Press YOUTH EMPOWERMENT AND VOLUNTEERISM
Book SynopsisThis book is a collection of papers presented at the International Conference on Youth Empowerment over the last four years. It explores the relationship between youth volunteerism and empowerment which is considered as an inherent cornerstone in the social and psychological growth for youth. Written by a team of experts on issues about youth, the book presents the various theories, models, paradigms and concepts related to youth empowerment and volunteerism. With selected examples in countries around the world, it also reveals to us how different cultures infuse their own history, language, mores, laws, policies, demographics, and socio-political infrastructures in facilitating youth empowerment and volunteerism. Youth hold the key to the world of the future, and empowering youth is actually a human empowerment toward a better world of great hope. In this collection, one clearly sees how youth are empowered through volunteerism; given the chance to serve their communities, youth can indeed become responsible citizens of tomorrow.

Taylor & Francis Ltd Internal Evaluation in NonProfit Organisations
Book SynopsisFocused on the interpersonal aspects of internal evaluation in non-profit organisations, this book presents practice-based discussions centred on six key topics identified through the authors' experience as evaluation practitioners. Internal Evaluation in Non-Profit Organisations: Practitioner Perspectives on Theory, Research, and Practice is not a step-by-step how-to guide; instead, each chapter unpacks an aspect of internal evaluation in non-profits that is paid insufficient heed in the existing literature. Written by and for internal evaluation practitioners, the book contains a plethora of practical strategies and critical analysis of thought-provoking topics that are of particular interest and importance to internal evaluators in non-profit settings. The authors understand the pressures facing practitioners and non-profit organisations and share their insights around improving evaluation's ability to be efficient, embedded, useful, and meaningful. This bookTrade Review"The co-authors--two incredibly thoughtful internal evaluators--present an extensive set of practical ideas to enhance evaluation practice in non-profit organizations. Building on their own practice and on an understanding of the scholarly literature that grounds internal evaluation, they have produced a highly usable guide that will enable other evaluators to build evaluation capacity both for themselves and for their organizations. I am eager to use this book in my own work." Jean A. King, Professor Emerita, Department of Organizational Leadership, Policy, and Development/Minnesota Evaluation Studies Institute, USA"In an era where internal evaluation is gaining unprecedented relevance in non-profit organisations, this guide addresses a niche yet important topic, notably understated in evaluation literature." Auzan Rama Satria, Faculty of Psychology, University of Indonesia; International Society for Third-Sector ResearchChapter Endorsements"It felt really nice to be reading something that speaks so directly to where I am at in the early stages of my evaluation journey. It has given me some useful food for thought." Kate Baker, Evaluation Project Manager, HealthWest (Chapter 2)"These uniquely practical guidelines and reflections are essential to read" Phyo Pyae Thida (Sophia) Htwe, Community Development Evaluator, GraceWorks Myanmar (Chapter 2)"What a complete joy to read this!" Yoland Wadsworth, Professor (Hon), RMIT University, Australia, and author of the best-selling Everyday Evaluation on the Run"The content shows the value of combining research, theory and practice, and the importance of NGOs actively contributing to global understandings by sharing knowledge through publications. Genius!" Stephanie Harrison, Evaluation Consultant, Pandanus Evaluation (Chapter 5)"I was actually quite inspired to use theory more in my work after reading it!" Catherine Malla, Knowledge Management Advisor, The Fred Hollows Foundation (Chapter 5)"This chapter addresses an important topic – the need for all evaluators, not just internal evaluators working in the NFP sector, to do much better at integrating theory/research with practice when planning, conducting and using evaluations." Brad Astbury, Director, ARTD Consultants (Chapter 5)"This is a great practical resource with valuable lessons learnt for guiding how external and internal evaluators can combine their expertise together to conduct evaluations in non-profits." Kathryn Dinh, Director, Lotus Evaluation (Chapter 6)"A practical and useful guide on how to think about utilisation and apply this to data collection and evaluations. Working in M&E in a large organisation with varying knowledge and skills around evaluation utilisation, I found this incredibly helpful!" Lauren Lombardi, National Monitoring and Evaluation Lead, Emergency Services, Australian Red Cross (Chapter 7)"I think I've had an epiphany! This was so well written, enjoyable and reaffirming." Taylor & Francis Ltd Food Bank Nations
Book SynopsisIn the world's most affluent and food secure societies, why is it now publicly acceptable to feed donated surplus food, dependent on corporate food waste, to millions of hungry people? While recognizing the moral imperative to feed hungry people, this book challenges the effectiveness, sustainability and moral legitimacy of globally entrenched corporate food banking as the primary response to rich world food poverty. It investigates the prevalence and causes of domestic hunger and food waste in OECD member states, the origins and thirty-year rise of US style charitable food banking, and its institutionalization and corporatization. It unmasks the hidden functions of transnational corporate food banking which construct domestic hunger as a matter for charity thereby allowing indifferent and austerity-minded governments to ignore increasing poverty and food insecurity and their moral, legal and political obligations, under international law, to realize the right to foodTrade Review"I’m not sure how I missed this one when it came out. It’s really good. It is a tough analysis of the politics of charitable food—the institutionalized use of corporate food waste to feed hungry people, largely in OECD countries but also in the U.S." Marion Nestle, https://www.foodpolitics.com/"Riches provides a passionate insider’s account of the current system and politics of food banking in OECD countries … [T]his is a powerfully-written text, which makes essential reading for students and teachers of social policy and, indeed, activists seeking to understand how to reform the current food banking system in the rich nations of the world." - Rana Jawad, Journal of Social Policy, 2019"This is a shocking book. Shocking in its contents; shocking in that it is needed now, more than ever; and shocking to me. I have worked on food, poverty, and policy response for nearly 40 years, yet so much here comes as new or into the sharpest possible focus. Food Bank Nations is a passionately argued and evidenced polemic against the neoliberal capture of charitable response to local experiences of poverty, manifested as people ‘going hungry’, in some of the richest nations on earth. Graham Riches takes on the corporate invasion and capture of what is often portrayed as ordinary people - ‘good hearted folks’ - trying to help out their neighbours who aren’t able to feed themselves adequately by giving them food." - From the Foreword, Elizabeth Dowler, Emeritus Professor Food and Social Policy, University of Warwick, UK"Against a backdrop of increasing food insecurity in OECD countries, Riches' examination of food banking reveals the extent to which ‘Big Food’ and privatized food charity have well and truly moved into the spaces left by retreating neoliberal governments. Beyond the food drives, celebrity endorsement, smiling volunteers and government legislated tax incentives, this book documents the juggernaut that is global food banking. Despite being a thorn in the side of many ‘primary duty bearers’, rights-based approaches to food offer promise as an effective counterweight to slow the progress of the foodbank juggernaut and reclaim public policy." - Dr. Sue Booth, Flinders University, Australia"Graham Riches’ in-depth analysis of the way food banking has entrenched itself in the neoliberal agenda and public discourse calls for a change in ‘the conversation about domestic hunger from corporate charity to the right to food’. This book makes a significant contribution to this new conversation, arguing that civil society across OECD countries can and should hold the ‘indifferent States’ to account for their failure to ensure dignified access to good food for all when they so clearly have both the means and the duty to do so." - Pete Ritchie, Nourish Scotland, UK "Can’t we do better than food banks? Graham Riches moves the needle from charity to the human right to adequate food and nutrition. He describes how capital-soaked transnational corporations monopolize public policy, blame poverty on the poor, and endorse themselves as the publically-subsidized solution. Riches’ alternative vision, rooted in social solidarity examples, rebuilds the social contract between civil society and its governments through democratically evolved plans, transparent monitoring, and the active participation and leadership of policies’ most affected publics." - Anne C Bellows, Professor Food Studies, Syracuse University, USA, and Board Member, FIAN International."Graham Riches's book is essential reading for anyone wanting to understand why problems of hunger and food insecurity are unabated in countries where food banks become established as the primary response." - Valerie Tarasuk, University of Toronto, Canada "Graham Riches serves us all well with this analysis of modern food poverty. This book reminds us how the slow erosion of notions of welfare and decency, under the neo-liberal assault since the late 1970s, has created a world - even in rich countries - where charity and crumbs from the table now replace food justice. We should all read, consider, and then start planning how to win a better food system again." - Tim Lang, Professor of Food Policy, City, University of London, UK"Food Bank Nations" is an up-to-date and important book for anyone dealing with issues of poverty, social exclusion and the transformation of welfare systems in rich industrial societies. A particular strength of the book is that it uses the Food Banks to trace the transnational developments of recent decades. It shows how volunteers, sponsors and government support continue to promote charitable food aid, which is mainly associated with the name "Food Banks" or "Tables" in Germany." - Dr. Stephan Lorenz, Prof. at the Jena Institute of Sociology, Friedrich-Schiller University, Germany "Graham Riches’ book provides sharp critical analysis of current food banks." - George Kent, University of Hawai'i'..as Graham Riches documents in his important new book, Food Bank Nations: Poverty, Corporate Charity and the Right to Food, starting in the 1980s and continuing through today, many industrialized nations began making the same mistakes as the U.S. by increasing their societal reliance on food charities while reducing protections for workers and available social services' - Joel Berg, Hunger Free America"Riches provides a passionate insider’s account of the current system and politics of food banking in OECD countries … [T]his is a powerfully-written text, which makes essential reading for students and teachers of social policy and, indeed, activists seeking to understand how to reform the current food banking system in the rich nations of the world." - Rana Jawad, Journal of Social Policy, 2019"This is a shocking book. Taylor & Francis The Science of Giving Experimental Approaches to the Study of Charity The Society for Judgment and Decision Making Series
Book SynopsisThis book highlights some of the most intriguing, surprising, and enlightening experimental studies on the topic of donation behavior, opening up exciting pathways to cross-cutting the divide between theory and practice.Trade Review"The Science of Giving will be of interest to psychologists and economists interested in understanding how people decide whether, when, and how much to donate to charitable causes. It could also be a valuable supplement as a textbook for an upper level class in applications of social psychology. This book will also give all readers much to consider about their own charitable giving." - Catherine A. Sanderson, Amherst College, USA, in PsycCRITIQUES"The Science of Giving is full of information that may help a fundraiser make better decisions about how to approach donors. ... The book is a fine reference for the science of charitable giving as it stands today. ... [The Science of Giving] will yield many insights that can be applied to any organization's fundraising approach." - Joanne Fritz, About.com Guide"I picked up this book and could not put it down. It masterfully links several important contributions on the market for charity. The even-handed approach should appeal to a broad audience, including academics, policymakers, and the general reader interested in the economics and psychology of charity markets." - John A. Cambridge University Press Charity and Community in Medieval Cambridge 4 Cambridge Studies in Medieval Life and Thought Fourth Series Series Number 4
Book SynopsisThis study develops our understanding of medieval society through an examination of its charitable activities. In a detailed study of the forms in which relief was organised in medieval Cambridge and Cambridgeshire, the book unravels the economic and demographic factors which created the need for relief as well as the forms in which the community offered it. With continual reference to the religious teachings of priests and friars and the changing ideas of lay piety, Dr Rubin relates the changing forms of charitable giving to the shift in attitudes towards community and social order, towards relations between laity and clergy, and towards the poor. A local study is thus set in a wide comparative context, drawing together contributions in the fields of social, religious, economic and urban history.Table of ContentsList of tables; Acknowledgements; List of abbreviations; Map; 1.
