Springer-Verlag Berlin and Heidelberg GmbH & Co. KG Einführung in die Spieltheorie
Table of ContentsKommunikation und die Bedürfnisse.- Kulturelle Einflüsse.- Vertrauensschaffende Kommunikation.- Soziale Medien als taktische Kommunikations-Plattform.

Table of ContentsEine Begriffserklärung.- Die Verbreitung von Freiwilligenarbeit: Statistiken.- Freiwillige Arbeit als Tätigkeit.- Motivation zur Freiwilligenarbeit.- Gestaltung von Freiwilligenarbeit.- Freiwilligenarbeit als psychosoziale Ressource.- Ein Fazit zur Flüchtlingshilfe.

Darüber hinaus werden ergänzend auch Wohlstands-, Armuts- und Glücksindizes vorgestellt. Brill Dynamics and Policy Implications of the Global Reforms at the End of the Second Millennium
Book SynopsisMost people, and indeed governments, hold the conviction that reforms, rather than revolutions, are likely to produce more appropriate and acceptable results. This is especially true for developing countries. That is because reforms are gradual in their implementation and respectful to past policy fabrics of a society. On the other hand, the simultaneous spread of communication technology, global liberalization of the market, and peripheral homogenization of cultures, have caused extreme tensions in just these developing countries. In this book, scholars from different countries around the world highlight the reforms and the tensions, in the light of the questions: what has been achieved, what has failed, and what is still needed? Experiences from such diverse locations as Nigeria, Ghana, Guatemala, South Korea, Taiwan, Zimbabwe, and Tanzania are combined with more general observations from other countries. Contributors are Don Adams, N’dri Thérèse Assié-Lumumba, Amiya Kumar Bagchi, Thomas Clayton, Mark Ginsburg, Julius O. Brill Oil and Security Policies: Saudi Arabia, 1950-2012
Book SynopsisWith one quarter of proven oil reserves and the largest oil production in the world, Saudi Arabia has been at the center of world politics. Its vast oil resources have been utilized in various ways to maximize internal and external security. While oil revenue allowed the Saudi state to buy off legitimacy at home and abroad, the Saudi state exploited oil supply to either forge alliances with or pressure consuming and producing countries. By providing an insightful account of how oil resources shaped Saudi security policies since the mid-twentieth century, Islam Y. Qasem offers a timely contribution to the study of oil politics and the interrelationship between economic interdependence and security.Table of ContentsAcknowledgments List of Tables and Figures List of Abbreviations Introduction Chapter One: Rentier Theory and Saudi Arabia Chapter Two: Neo-Rentier Theory Chapter Three: The Pre-boom (1950-1970) Chapter Four: The First Boom (1970-1985) Chapter Five: The Bust (1985-2000) Chapter Six: The Second Boom (2000-2012) Chapter Seven: Conclusion Bibliography Index

Brill Managing Frontiers in Qing China: The Lifanyuan and Libu Revisited
Book SynopsisThis volume offers a comprehensive overview of the Lifanyuan and Libu, revising and assessing the state of affairs in the under-researched field of these two institutions. The contributors explore the imperial policies towards and the shifting classifications of minority groups in the Qing Empire. This volume offers insight into how China's past has continued to inform its modern policies, as well as the geopolitical make-up of East Asia and beyond.Trade Review"This seminal work (...) essential reading for specialists in Inner Asian and Chinese history, as well as for anyone interested in probing into the institutional and operational aspects of frontier management in early modern empires." Tommaso Previato, Ming Qing Studies (2017) "This book offers a stimulating overview of recent studies on Qing dynasty's institutions related to managing frontier issues and non-Han peoplse, the Lifanyuan 理藩院 and the Libu 礼部. Since it represents "the first comprehensive study" on Lifanyuan (Di Cosmo, p. viii), it will certainly be warmly welcomed by scholars of the Qing dynasty, but it also offers a World historical comparative perspective, revealing a unique practice of early modern empire building, departing from both Western imperial narratives as well as Chinese political traditions. [...] One finds in these pages a set of very inspirational perspectives that will certainly have lots of impact on future researches on these institutions and on the Qing dynasty in general." Brill Procedural Justice and the Fair Trial in Contemporary Chinese Criminal Justice
Book SynopsisThis review examines the literature on procedural justice and the fair trial over the past two decades in the People’s Republic of China. Part 1 gives a wide-angle view of the key political events and developments that have shaped the experience of procedural justice and the fair trial in contemporary China. It provides a storyline that explains the political environment in which these concepts have developed over time. Part 2 examines how scholars understand the legal structures of the criminal process in relation to China’s political culture. Part 3 presents scholarly views on three enduring problems relating to the fair trial: a presumption of innocence, interrogational torture, and the role of lawyers in the criminal trial process. Procedural justice is a particularly pertinent issue today in China, because Xi Jinping’s yifa zhiguo 依法治国 (governing the nation in accordance with the law) governance platform seeks to embed a greater appreciation for procedural justice in criminal justice decision-making, to correct a politico-legal tradition overwhelmingly focused on substantive justice. Overall, the literature reviewed in this article points to the serious limitations in overcoming the politico-legal barriers to justice reforms that remain intact in the system, despite nearly four decades of constant reform.Table of ContentsContents Author Biographies Procedural Justice and the Fair Trial in Contemporary Chinese Criminal Justice Elisa Nesossi and Susan Trevaskes Abstract Keywords Introduction 1 The Justice Storyline 2 The Policy-Implementing Structures of the Criminal Process 3 Three Areas of Concern 4 Conclusion References

Brill The Price and Promise of Specialness: The Political Economy of Overseas Chinese Policy in the People’s Republic of China, 1949–1959
Book SynopsisIn The Price and Promise of Specialness, Jin Li Lim revises narratives on the overseas Chinese and the People’s Republic of China by analysing the Communist approach to ‘overseas Chinese affairs’ in New China’s first decade as a function of a larger political economy. Jin Li Lim shows how the party-state centred its approach towards the overseas Chinese on a perception of their financial utility and thus sought to offer them a special identity and place in New China, so as to unlock their riches. Yet, this contradicted the quest for socialist transformation, and as its early pragmatism fell away, the radicalising party-state abandoned its promises to the overseas Chinese, who were left to pay the price for their difference.Table of ContentsAcknowledgements Glossary of Chinese Terms List of Abbreviations List of Figures Introduction 1 The Political Economy of Overseas Chinese Policy 2 Historiography 3 Structure and Scope 4 Sources 1 Rights and Interests 1 Introduction 2 New Democracy and the Huaqiao 3 To Do Some Good 4 Openness and Sincerity 5 Common Program 6 Conclusion 2 Screaming for Socialism 1 Introduction 2 Like Another Province Overseas 3 If Only 1% 4 All Huaqiao Have Money 5 Conclusion 3 No Complaints, No Escapes, No Shortfalls 1 Introduction 2 They Will Fervently Leap 3 Rather Left than Right 4 More Money, More Problems 5 Conclusion 4 Fourth-Class Socialism 1 Introduction 2 ‘Is the Overseas Chinese Affairs Bureau Your Daddy?’ 3 Special Circumstances 4 The Great Debate 5 Conclusion 5 Politics in Command 1 Introduction 2 A Great Leap Forward for Qiaowu 3 Keep Left 4 Conclusion Conclusion 1 Political Economy 2 Contradiction 3 Paradox 4 Caveat Emptor Appendices Appendix I: Overseas Chinese Remittances to the People’s Republic of China, 1950–1960 Bibliography

Brill Politics of Education in Latin America: Reforms, Resistance and Persistence
Book SynopsisPolitics of Education in Latin America: Reforms, Resistance and Persistence portrays complex situations of education change policies in Latin America from Argentina and Chile, the southernmost part of the continent, to Mexico, the northernmost. The analyses tour through Brazil, Peru, Colombia, Ecuador, El Salvador, and Cuba to conclude with a chapter that scrutinizes why the big teacher unions reject most attempts at education reforms. In these, teachers are the target of criticism and, at the same time, the focus of the expectations for progress and better educational quality. Readers will find a variety of contentious issues such as inclusion, equity, privatization, uses of power, and dialectics between the indications of intergovernmental organizations and the rejection of their recommendations by local political actors. They will also find narratives to raise public education participation, improve the quality of life of teachers, and put local education systems to dialogue with the global world. The politics of education in Latin America is a territory that groups and institutions continue to dispute since the establishment of their education systems.Table of ContentsForeword Robert F. Brill Africa and the Decolonisation of State-Religion Policies
Book SynopsisThis book argues that a view has taken root in Africa, which equates state-secularism to the aggressive removal of religion from the public sphere or even state ambivalence towards religious affairs. This view arises from a misguided interpretation of the practice of state-secularism particularly in France, Turkey and the US, which understanding is ill-suited for the sub-Sahara Africa’s state-religion because the region boasts of at least three major religious traditions, African religion, Islam and Christianity, and blanket condemnation of public manifestation of religion or ambivalence towards it may offend the natural flourishing of this trinity and more. The contribution holds that most applications of state-secularism in Kenya, Nigeria and Uganda favour the Christian faith, which during its tumultuous experiences in Europe survived the enlightenment, the reformation and like experiences socialised to co-exist with what are now called secular states. Additionally, due to the long history of Christendoms in Europe, Christian principles penetrated the colonial legal systems that were bequeathed to Africa at independence and the sustenance of the colonial legacy means that the Abrahamic faith has an upper hand in the state-religion relations’ contest. The obvious loser is African religion which has suffered major onslaughts since the colonial days.Table of ContentsAfrica and the Decolonisation of State-Religion Policies John Osogo Ambani Abstract Keywords Preface Part 1: State-Religion Relations Part 2: A Theoretical Framework for the African Triple Heritage Part 3: African Case Studies in the Secular State Conundrum Part 4: The Right to Freedom of Religion: Case Study of the Treatment of Religion in Educational Institutions Part 5: Conclusion and Way Forward

Brill Ministries of Foreign Affairs in the World: Actors of State Diplomacy
Book SynopsisMinistries of foreign affairs are prominent institutions at the heart of state diplomacy. Although they have lost their monopoly on the making of national foreign policies, they still are the operators of key practices associated with diplomacy: communication, representation and negotiation. Often studied in a monographic way, ministries of foreign affairs are undergoing an adaptation of their practices that require a global approach. This book fills a gap in the literature by approaching ministries of foreign affairs in a comparative and comprehensive way. The best international specialists in the field provide methodological and theoretical insights into how best to study institutions that remain crucial for the world diplomacy. Brill The Making of a Neo-Propaganda State: China's Social Media under Xi Jinping
Book SynopsisWhy has China’s authoritarian government under Xi Jinping retained popular support without political reforms? Drawing on Chinese social media data, in this book Titus C. Chen argues that China’s digital propaganda and information control techniques--the monopolistic exercise of market authoritarianism--have empowered the Xi administration to manipulate public discourse and shape public opinion via social media. Chen argues that these techniques forge a sense of community and unite the general public under the Chinese government, thereby legitimating autocratic rule. By enhancing our understanding of China’s digital ideological statecraft, the book makes a major contribution to the fields of China Studies and Political Communication.Table of ContentsList of Figures and Tables 1 Introduction 1 Making Sense of China’s Authoritarian Resilience Under Xi Jinping 2 Market Authoritarianism and Online thought Work 3 The Revitalization of Party Media 4 Online thought Work as Authoritarian Signaling 5 Mischaracterizing Hong Kong: The “Newspeak” of a Neo-propaganda State 6 The plan of the Book 2 China as a Post-propaganda State: The Erosion of Market Authoritarianism in the Age of Social Media 1 Introduction 2 Market Authoritarianism: How Media Marketization Sustained Authoritarianism in China 3 China’s State–media Relationship in the Age of Social Media: The State Losing Both Control and Influence 4 Chapter Conclusion 3 Regaining Control, Reclaiming Influence: Xi Jinping’s Grand Strategy for Taming Social Media 1 Introduction 2 Setting the Stage for the New Leader: The Intensification of Online Censorship Targeting Social Media 3 Conceptual Developments of Xi Jinping’s thought Control Strategy (2013–2014) 3.1 Showing True Colors: Main Melody, Positive Energy, and “Grand Propaganda” 3.2 Social Management and Cultural Management: Xi Jinping’s Blueprint for thought Control on the Internet 4 Instituting and Substantializing Xi Jinping’s thought Control Strategy on the Internet 4.1 Centralizing the Command Structure of the Cyber Affairs System 4.2 Regaining Control: The Proposition of “Cyber Sovereignty” 4.3 Reclaiming Influence: The Initiative of “Media Convergence” (´CÊ^¿Ä¦X) 5 Constructing a Regulatory Framework Favoring Online thought Control 5.1 Reinforcing Regime Presence and Influence on Social Media 5.2 Enhancing Control Mechanisms over Social Media Access and Content 5.3 Reinforcing Online Influence Work 6 Chapter Conclusion: The Party-lization of Chinese Social Media Market 4 Entrepreneurial Mouthpieces: Party Media as Digital thought Workers 1 Introduction 2 Conceptualizing Party Media as Digital thought Workers 3 Locating Party Media in the Regime’s Grand Scheme of “Media Convergence” 4 People’s Daily: Pioneering Online thought Work on Social Media 4.1 The “Central Kitchen” Model: Mass Producing Online thought Work Materials 4.2 One Paper, Multiple Outlets: Effective Circulation of Pro-regime Content 4.3 The Business of Net-watching: Online Surveillance and Censorship Operations 5 A Propaganda Deluge on the Chinese Internet 6 Chapter Conclusion 5 Autocracy Marketized: Surveying the Party-state’s Hegemonic Discursive Patterns on Social Media 1 Introduction 2 Chinese Social Media as an Arena for Hegemonic Communication Power 3 Introducing the WeChat Data and Research Methods for Content Analysis 4 Exploring Layout Features of Pro-regime Social Media Posts 5 Topic Modeling the Content of Pro-regime Social Media Posts 6 Tracking Diachronic Changes in the Content Structure of Pro-regime Social Media Posts 7 Examining Framing Techniques of “Mainstream” Discourses on WeChat 7.1 The Discursive Strategies of Reification and Dissimulation 7.2 The Discursive Strategy of Legitimation 7.3 The Discursive Strategies of Unification and Fragmentation 8 Chapter Conclusion: The Prevalence of “Feel-good” Propaganda in Xi’s China 6 China’s Online thought Work as Authoritarian Diplomatic Signaling 1 Introduction 2 Costly Signals and Credible Information: A Literature Review 3 Conceptualizing Beijing’s Authoritarian Diplomatic Signaling on Social Media 4 Identifying and Measuring Beijing’s Diplomatic Signaling on WeChat 4.1 Measuring the Information Coordination Costs 4.2 Measuring the Domestic Audience Costs 4.3 Dataset for Empirical Analyses 4.4 Case Studies for Empirical Analyses 5 Beijing’s Diplomatic Signaling During the Intensified US–China Trade Disputes (May 2019) 5.1 Comparing Operational Patterns of Beijing’s Diplomatic Signaling 5.2 Comparing Beijing’s Information Coordination Costs for Handling Trade Dispute Incidents 5.3 Comparing Beijing’s Domestic Audience Costs Generated by Trade Dispute Incidents 6 Chapter Conclusion: Diplomatic Signaling for Domestic Purposes 7 Misrepresenting Hong Kong: China’s Disinformation Against the Rallying Cry for Democracy 1 Introduction 2 Beijing’s Early Responses to the Anti-Extradition Bill Movement in Hong Kong 3 June–August 2019, a Critical Juncture 4 Shifting Approaches of China’s Online Influence Operations Targeting the Hong Kong Protests 5 Traitors, Flag Guardians, and Azhong Gege: Disinformation with Chinese Characteristics 6 Chapter Conclusion 8 China as a Neo-propaganda State 1 Marketized Ideological Work Matters 2 Ideological Work Going Abroad 3 A call for Future Research References Index
