Book SynopsisA highly regarded academic and former policy analyst and consultant charts the forty-year history of neoliberalism, environmental governance, and resource rights in MadagascarTrade Review“An incisive and devastating account of the transnational politics of conservation. A must read!”—Michael Goldman, author of Imperial Nature: The World Bank and Struggles for Social Justice in the Age of Globalization -- Michael Goldman“Catherine Corson masterfully shows how a conjuncture of devoted people carrying diverse interests and operating with institutional constraints came together to focus American development aid in Madagascar on biodiversity in parks.”—Christian Kull, author of Isle of Fire: The Political Ecology of Landscape Burning in Madagascar -- Christian Kull“Corson’s remarkable multi-sited ethnography exposes the narratives and power relations of neo-liberal conservation in one of the world’s most hotly-contested landscapes. As environmental politics intensify in an era of climate change and financialisation, this is vital reading for all concerned with the intertwined futures of Africa’s forests and people.”—Melissa Leach, University of Sussex -- Melissa Leach“Truly brilliant! Catherine Corson traces the environmental story in the one of the world’s most important biodiversity hotspots, showing how international and national power struggles undermined the well-meaning efforts of conservationists and donors, distorting sustainable development objectives in the country and ignoring the realities of peasant livelihoods. Personal insights from involvements in USAID, DFID, and numerous interactions in Madagascar and on Capitol Hill enliven this gripping account. It is a fascinating and well-documented read, brim-full of challenging perspectives for anyone engaged in trying to save the planet. It is indeed an important book.”—Sir Richard Jolly, Institute of Development Studies -- Sir Richard Jolly“From the villages of rural Madagascar to the board rooms of conservation organisations in Washington DC, Corridors of Power traces the fascinating story of conservation in one of the world’s most biodiverse rich regions. Its rich ethnographic approach shows how knowledge and politics intertwine in the framing and practice of biodiversity conservation. This is a ‘must read’ book for anyone interested in conservation and development in Africa and beyond.”—Ian Scoones, author of Sustainable Livelihoods and Rural Development -- Ian Scoones“This is a highly original book, which makes a major contribution to our understandings of theoretical debates around neoliberalism, policy formation, and the roles of international actors. It provides a fascinating and in-depth analysis, and as such this book deserves to be widely read.”—Rosaleen Duffy, SOAS University London -- Rosaleen Duffy

Book SynopsisThe first international history of the emergence of economic sanctions during the interwar period and the legacy of this developmentTrade Review“Valuable . . . offers many lessons for Western policy makers today.”—Paul Kennedy, Wall Street Journal“Lucidly written, scholarly and thought-provoking.”—Gideon Rachman, Financial Times“Mulder . . . looks at sanctions over the three decades after the First World War—and reaches unsettling conclusions. . . . The lessons are sobering.”—The Economist“Mulder charts how the rise of economic sanctions and blockade during the interwar years, as a tool to enforce peace, drove the autarkic policies of Nazi Germany and Imperial Japan, ultimately destabilising the international system rather than fortifying it.”—Robin Harding, Financial Times“Mulder argues in his impeccably well-researched and, because of its timeliness, gripping book that ‘sanctions did not stop political and economic disintegration but accelerated it’ in the interwar period. . . . Mulder’s book provides an uncomfortable warning that while sanctions have sometimes worked, they have also been contentious, ineffective and counterproductive.”—Emma Duncan, The Times“This revelatory history of ‘economic warfare’—blockades and sanctions—reminds us that up to 400,000 people died of blockade-induced malnutrition in Central Europe in the First World War, plus 500,000 in the Ottoman Middle East. You will look at twentieth-century history with fresh eyes.”—Noel Malcolm, Daily Telegraph, “Perfect Holiday Reads”"A fortuitously timed history of the use of economic sanctions during the interwar period of the 20th century. Their mixed success cautions against hoping that the West’s sanctions against Russia can bring about an end to war in Ukraine."—The Economist, "Best Books of 2022"A Foreign Affairs Best Book of 2022“As Nicholas Mulder shows in The Economic Weapon, a much longer history lies behind the invention of modern sanctions.”—Tom Stevenson, London Review of Books“A fascinating new book. . . . Taken as a superbly researched work of history, it lights up key aspects of the twentieth century in a deeply thought-provoking way.”—Noel Malcolm, Daily Telegraph“Original and persuasive analysis. . . . For those who see economic sanctions as a relatively mild way of expressing displeasure at a country’s behavior, this book, charting how they first emerged as a potential coercive instrument during the first decades of the twentieth century, will come as something of a revelation.”—Lawrence D. Freedman, Foreign Affairs“[A] superb study of sanctions during the interwar era. . . . Mulder’s fascinating story weaves together politics, economics and law [and] provides invaluable insight into the experience of sanctions one hundred years ago.”—Max Harris, Times Literary Supplement“An excellent historical study. . . . Western countries have directed an unprecedentedly severe battery of punitive economic measures against Russia. . . . For those of us seeking better to understand this reaction and gauge its likely efficacy, there is no better place to turn than Cornell historian Nicholas Mulder’s erudite and uncannily timely book on the origins of economic sanctions."—Alexander Watson, Literary Review“Mulder’s examination of the details of economic diplomacy in the interwar era makes for fascinating reading, and at the least it will remind us that, in the case of determined dictators, something more than sanctions may be needed.”—Matthew Partridge, Money Week, “Book of the Week”“There are few books that can be said to be timely like Nicholas Mulder's The Economic Weapon . . . [it is] an important contribution to the history of economics and international relations in the interwar period.”—Roman Köster, sehepunkteWinner of the Stuart L. Bernath Book Prize for best first book by the Society for Historians of American Foreign Relations (SHAFR)“The Economic Weapon is a superb account of the history of sanctions, and their profound impact on international politics. Although sanctions were once heralded as a force for peace, Mulder shows they often fail and sometimes make war more likely or even produce a humanitarian nightmare.&rdquot;—John Mearsheimer, author of The Great Delusion: Liberal Dreams and International Realities“This is a tour de force of historical research and argument. With great subtlety and richness, Nicholas Mulder transforms our understanding of twentieth-century global and international history.”—David Edgerton, King’s College London“Mulder reveals the history of liberalism’s ultimate weapon. An essential contribution both to scholarship and to the present-day debate on economic sanctions.”—Adam Tooze, author of Shutdown: How Covid Shook the World’s Economy"A fortuitously timed history of the use of economic sanctions during the interwar period of the 20th century. Their mixed success cautions against hoping that the West’s sanctions against Russia can bring about an end to war in Ukraine."—The Economist, "Best Books of 2022" * Economist *

Book SynopsisThe most important book on government policy that I’ve read in a long time.”—David Leonhardt, The New York TimesTrade Review"Written by Emmanuel Saez and Gabriel Zucman... it analyses how the super-rich dodge taxes, what this means and what to do about it... Theirs is a cogent, reasoned and practical argument against the “tax competition” that has sent so many corporate profits to Ireland or Bermuda and they give clear and compelling policy solutions to change the direction of society itself. It is a hope-inspiring book that should inform the manifesto of anyone keen to defend liberal democracy from the twin threats of inequality and multinational corporate power. Their recommendations would take back control, but for real, this time. The proposals put forward by Zucman and Saez deserve to be read in full, but are elegantly explained and well formulated." -- The Guardian"[T]he most important book on government policy that I’ve read in a long time." -- David Leonhardt - The New York Times"America is tired with inequality and oligarchy. Armed with eye-popping new data, Emmanuel Saez and Gabriel Zucman reveal how tax injustice is fueling the oligarchic drift. But above all, they propose bold solutions to help America reconnect with its tradition of tax justice, from the taxation of extreme wealth and giant corporations to the funding of health care for all. This is a brilliantly argued book that is an essential contribution to the global economic and political debate of the twenty-first century." -- Thomas Piketty"Saez and Zucman are leading figures in the detailed empirical analysis of inequality. In this important book, they document the perverse characteristics of the US tax system, which is now “a giant flat tax [that becomes] regressive at the top”." -- Financial Times

Book SynopsisTrade Review"This original work marks a significant contribution to endogenous growth theory for several reasons. Not only does it provide a unified framework within which much of the recent literature can be compared and contrasted, but it extends some of the existing models in interesting and worthwhile ways. Further, it offers a nice balance of theoretical analysis and empirical valuation of the models treated, something still uncommon in economics. The book is a very pleasant read."—Carl Chiarella, University of Technology, Sydney, author of Keynesian Monetary Growth Dynamics in Open Economics"This well-written book is a useful and worthwhile contribution to the growth literature. • Mass Media Unleashed

    Rlpg/Galleys Mass Media Unleashed

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisEveryone complains about mass media, but only the FCC and Congress are expressly empowered to do something about it, and that''s why America deserves better from its media policymakers. Mass Media Unleashed touches on the key issues stirring the current debate over mass media policy, such as consolidation, the steady dismantling of regulatory standards, the roles mass media must play (but increasingly fail to perform) in today''s helter-skelter world, and the vastly different ways these media are now delivered to and used by busy, on-the-go Americans. Carl Ramey, a long-time Washington communications lawyer, has observed the policymaking process up close and personal for thirty years. Warning that time is running out for taking actions that will make a real difference, Ramey shines a critical light on the massive transformation of government policy that has taken place since 1980 and has lead to vast changes in today''s electronic media: more consolidation, less public service, and everything ruled by the bottom line. Before the game is over, Washington policymakers must step to the plate and hit a home run for Americascrapping the old regulatory system and writing an entirely new policy script that, for the first time, is specifically designed to guarantee a broadcast service that is free, local, and dedicated to serving Americans as citizens, not just as consumers. This provocative read is a must for everyone concerned about mass media''s responsibilities and the policies that shape them.Trade ReviewCarl Ramey's book is an insightful and provocative work that challenges conventional policy assumptions by someone with great understanding of both the theoretical and practical challenges involved in communications policymaking. -- William E. Kennard, chair of the U.S. Federal Communications Commission under President Bill ClintonBased on his years of experience as a communications lawyer, Carl Ramey argues passionately that today's modern mass media are failing to serve the public good, and he lays much of the blame at the doorstep of deregulatory policies. To his credit, Ramey is not content, as he puts it, merely to diagnose the disease. He offers a bold policy prescription as the cure: Complete the deregulation of commercial broadcasting, and provide more government funding to the public broadcasting system. Even those, like me, who disagree with Ramey's diagnosis and cure, will agree that he has written a thoughtful and provocative book. -- Randolph J. May, president, The Free State FoundationMass Media Unleashed should be 'must reading' for policymakers, scholars, and, indeed, anyone concerned about the impact of government regulation of mass media. Carl Ramey, a thirty-three-year veteran of the Washington policy scene, has written a provocative yet eminently sound indictment of the failure of Washington policymakers to regulate media in a way that is responsive to contemporary concerns. Brilliantly written, Mass Media Unleashed is a scholarly work that is free of jargon and, most importantly, is a timely and thoughtful contribution to the ongoing debate over mass media policy. -- Erwin G. Krasnow, partner, Garvey Schubert Barer Law OfficesRamey provides an excellent history of what has gone wrong with broadcast regulation. . . . Recommended. Book SynopsisThis provocative & important book, with a new preface by the author written after the momentous events of 11 September, is a powerful account of the consequences of American global policies. The 21st century, Chalmers Johnson tells us, will be a payback world in which the US will reap the global resentments it is now sowing.''Blowback'', a term that officials of the CIA first invented for their internal use, refers to the unintended consequences of American policies and the dangers faced by an overextended empire that insists on projecting its military power to every corner of the earth and using American capital and markets to force global economic integration on its own terms. From America''s role in Asia''s financial crisis, to its early support for Saddam Hussein and its actions in the Balkans, Johnson reveals the misguided actions of a hugely powerful nation. In the wake of the Cold War, the US has imprudently expanded the commitments it made over the previous forty years. Trade ReviewChalmers Johnson is one of the most influential, brilliant, and provocative intellectuals writing today. He weaves past, present, and future together with extraordinary skill - John Dower, the 1999 winner of the NBCC non-fiction award for WAR WITHOUT MERCY * 'Timely, provocative and absorbing’ *#NAME?

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThe term collaboration is widely used but not clearly understood or operationalized. However, collaboration is playing an increasingly important role between and across public, nonprofit, and for-profit sectors. Collaboration has become a hallmark in both intragovernmental and intergovernmental relationships. As collaboration scholarship rapidly emerges, it diverges into several directions, resulting in confusion about what collaboration is and what it can be used to accomplish. This book provides much needed insight into existing ideas and theories of collaboration, advancing a revised theoretical model and accompanying typologies that further our understanding of collaborative processes within the public sector.Organized into three parts, each chapter presents a different theoretical approach to public problems, valuing the collective insights that result from honoring many individual perspectives. Case studies in collaboration, split across three levels of government, offeTrade Review"In recent years, collaboration has emerged as a central component of public administration and nonprofit organization management in practice as well as in theory. Yet, it is way too tempting to simply assume that when two organizations are linked within or across sectors, they will work together – collaboratively and effectively for the public good. With Advancing Collaboration Theory, Morris and Miller-Stevens offer us a thoughtful and interesting re-examination of the what’s and how’s of collaboration. This is a "must read." We are indebted to them."—J. Steven Ott, University of Utah"At a time when research on collaboration in the public service has significantly grown but not yet coalesced into a clear and coherent knowledge base, Morris and Miller-Stevens’ Advancing Collaboration Theory is a welcome addition that fills a critical gap in the current study of collaboration. Deeply rooted in the scholarship, this work charts the major unanswered dilemmas in collaboration research and provides five themes that structure their understanding and exploration of collaboration in the public service. This work contains conceptual and empirical chapters that explore collaboration from multiple perspectives and in multiple settings, shining a bright light on these dilemmas and capturing perspectives on both the process of collaboration and the structures that arise from collaborative endeavors. I have little doubt this book will quickly become required reading for those interested in the study and practice of collaboration in the public service." —Jessica E. Book SynopsisRacial minorities in the United States are disproportionately exposed to toxic wastes and other environmental hazards, and cleanup efforts in their communities are slower and less thorough than efforts elsewhere. Internationally, wealthy countries of the North increasingly ship hazardous wastes to poorer countries of the South, resulting in such tragedies as the disaster at Bhopal. Through case studies that highlight the type of information that is seldom reported in the news, Faces of Environmental Racism exposes the type and magnitude of environmental racism, both domestic and international. The essays explore the justice of current environmental practices, asking such questions as whether cost-benefit analysis is an appropriate analytic technique and whether there are alternate routes to sustainable development in the South.Trade ReviewA compelling collection . . . • Symbolic Policy

    Cambridge University Press Symbolic Policy

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisSymbols are everywhere in politics. Yet, they tended to be overlooked in the study of public policy. This book shows how they play an important role in the policy process, in shaping citizens'' representations thanks to their ability to combine meanings and to stimulate emotional reactions. We use crisis management as a lens through which we analyse this symbolic dimension, and we focus on two case studies (governmental responses to the Covid-19 crisis in Europe in 2020 and to terrorist attacks in France in 2015). We show how the symbolic enables leaders to claim legitimacy for themselves and their decisions, and foster feelings of reassurance, solidarity and belonging. All politicians use the symbolic, whether consciously or otherwise, but what they choose to do varies and is affected by timing, the existence of national repertoires of symbolic actions and the personas of leaders.

Book SynopsisWe, the King reveals how ordinary subjects aided and abetted law-making in the Spanish Empire, demonstrating how its policies, racial categories, and society were created from the bottom up. An important study for scholars of Colonial Latin America, this work reassesses our understandings of kingship, empire, race, and colonialism.Trade Review'Meticulously researched and beautifully written, We, the King unveils the labyrinthine petitioning process involved in enacting thousands of legislative decrees and reveals how diligent vassals shaped colonial policies and categories of difference. It dismantles the standard view of the Spanish colonial state as the architect of legal rule that was all-seeing and all-pervasive. This outstanding work should be required reading for all colonial Latin Americanists.' Nancy E. van Deusen, author of Global Indos: The Indigenous Struggle for Justice in Sixteenth-Century Spain'Adrian Masters has produced an ambitious study of early modern bureaucracy, law-making, and subaltern agency. Deeply researched and carefully written, We, the King is an indispensable resource for scholars of the Iberian empire.' Michelle McKinley, author of Fractional Freedoms: Slavery, Intimacy and Legal Mobilization in Colonial Lima, 1600–1700'In this tour de force analysis of lawmaking in the early modern Spanish empire, Adrian Masters reveals that not only were the king's New World vassals co-creators of royal law, but most provocatively, that it was their petitions to the crown that helped codify the human differences that would inform the caste system.' S. Elizabeth Penry, author of The People Are King: The Making of an Indigenous Andean Politics'Adrian Masters masterfully unpacks the powerful legal fiction of the King of Spain and Emperor of the Indies, demonstrating that the world's first global empire was a contingent and collective enterprise made by paper-peddling brokers and subalterns. A must read for anyone interested in the early modern history of empires and governance.' Book SynopsisThe UK is experiencing a housing crisis unlike any other. Homelessness is on the increase and more people are at the mercy of landlords due to unaffordable housing. Place and Identity: Home as Performance highlights that the meaning of home is not just found within the bricks and mortar; it is constructed from the network of place, space and identity and the negotiation of conflict between those â it is not a fixed space but a link with land, ancestry and culture. This book fuses philosophy and the study of home based on many years of extensive research. Richardson looks at how the notion of home, or perhaps the lack of it, can affect identity and in turn the British housing market. This book argues that the concept of âhomeâ and physical housing are intrinsically linked and that until government and wider society understand the importance of home in relation to housing, the crisis is only likely to get worse. This book will be essential reading for postgraduatTable of ContentsForeword 1 Performing home: an introduction 2 Feeling at home: intersections of place and identity 3 Protecting home: negotiating conflict 4 Home screen: a public or private performance? 5 Precarious home: the challenge of homelessness 6 Home and away: beyond bricks and mortar 7 Home is in the heart: authentic self and identity 8 Going home: conclusions References Index
