MP-KAN Uni Press of Kansas Policy Design for Democracy
Book SynopsisA theoretical work on how democracy can be improved when people are disenchanted with government. It summarizes four current approaches to policy theory - pluralism, policy sciences, public choice, and critical theory - and shows how none offer more than a partial view of policy design.Trade ReviewThe book is cogent and well written, offering clear discussion in a logical format." —American Political Science Review"Critical and perceptive." —Governance! One of the many attractions of the book is that it takes seriously the claims of social science to explain policy change and stability. . . the book uses the use of the concept of policy design to fill the gaps in rather than replace empirical research. Also, for the practitioner, Schneider and Ingram recommend general principles for good design." —American Politics Review"In this incredibly rich and sophisticated analysis, Schneider and Ingram develop a theoretical framework that both highlights how the elements of policy designs are socially constructed and explains how the characteristics of those designs often work to weaken democratic values and processes. This superb book will be of special value to those interested in policy studies." —Choice"This is a policy textbook with point of view and attitude. It will influence the next generation of students (graduates and undergraduates alike) and it will have to be taken with utmost seriousness by scholars, practitioners, and politicians."—Theodore Lowi, author of American Government and The End of Liberalism"Schneider and Ingram have resynthesized the policy literature around one central question: how do various elements of policy design and policy making help or hinder democracy? And in their new bottles, the old wine really does taste better."—Deborah A. Stone, author of The Disabled State and Policy Paradox and Political Reason"This superb review, critique, and synthesis of policy theory will enable everyone concerned with public policy, whether as practitioner, teacher, or student, not only to understand the process better and be more effective, but to think clearly about the values on which policy should be built."—John Mollenkopf, author of A Phoenix in the Ashes"It is time for intelligent optimism in political science, and Schneider and Ingram serve us well. Their formulation of ‘policy design’ wonderfully reminds us that policy has content and not mere form. They offer a framework that seeks to overcome degenerative policymaking, of which there is surely enough, and to achieve constructive results through democratic means. It is Lasswellian in spirit, but also reminds one of Norton Long."—Matthew Holden, Jr., author of Continuity and Disruption

Book SynopsisMany of the basic issues of political science have been addressed by pluralist theory, which focuses on the competing interests of a democratic polity, their organization, and their influence on policy. Andrew McFarland shows that this approach still provides a promising foundation for understanding the American political process.

Basic Books The Heat is On The Climate Crisis The Coverup The Prescription
Book SynopsisThis book not only brings home the imminence of climate change but also examines the campaign of deception by big coal and big oil that is keeping the issue off the public agenda. It examines the various arenas in which the battle for control of the issue is being fought- a battle with surprising political alliances and relentless obstructionism. The story provides an ominous foretaste of the gathering threat of political chaos and totalitarianism. And it concludes by outlining a transistion to the future that contains, at least, the possibility of continuity for our organized civilization, and, at best, a vast increase in the stability, equity, and wealth of the global economy.Table of Contents* Introduction: Climate Change Is Here. Rlpg/Galleys The Mongols at Chinas Edge
Book SynopsisThis important study explores the multifaceted Mongol experience in China, past and present. Combining insights from anthropology, history, and postcolonial criticism, Uradyn Bulag avoids romanticizing Mongols either as pacified primitive Other or as gallant resistance fighters. Rather, he portrays them as a people whose communist background and standing in China''s northern borderlands has informed their political efforts to harness or confront Chinese nationalistic and political hegemony. Breaking new ground in the study of Chinese and Mongol history and ethnicity, the author offers a fresh interpretation of China viewed from the perspective of its peripheries, and of minority nationalities in relation to the study of Chinese representation and minority self-representation. The author interrogates received wisdom about Chinese and minority nationalism by unraveling the Chinese discourse and practice of ''national unity.'' He shows how the discourse was constructed over time through political rituals and sexuality in relation to Mongols and other non-Chinese peoples that hark back to Chinese-Xiongnu confrontations two millennia ago and Manchu conquest in the 17th and 18th centuries. Titular rulers of an autonomous region in which they constitute a minority, Mongols face enormous barriers in building and maintaining a socialist Mongolian nationality and a Mongolian language and culture. Acknowledging these difficulties, Bulag discusses a range of sensitive issues including the imbrication of nation, class, and ethnicity in the context of Mongol-Chinese relations, tensions inherent in writing a postrevolutionary history for a socialist nationality, and the moral dilemma of building a socialist model with Mongol characteristics. Charting the interface between a state-centered multinational Chinese polity and a primordial nationalist multiculturalism that aims to manage minority nationalities as ''cultures,'' he explores Mongol ethnopolitical strategies to preserve their heritage.Trade ReviewThe Mongols at China's Edge will interest readers interested in nationalism, autonomy, Tibet and Xinjiang (by analogy and contrast), China, twentieth-century history, and issues of representation. * Pacific Affairs *Most valuable for the broad historical perspective it places on modern problems faced by one of China's most visible national minorities. * CHOICE *An essential read for anyone working on minorities in China, or for that matter in any region. * Central Eurasian Studies Review *Learned, thoughtful, and beautifully written. * Booknews *Bulag's passionate, historically-grounded exposition of the complexities of ethnic reconstruction make this book one of the best recent studies of China's ethnic minorities. Through his ethnic lens, he analyses not just Mongols, but the evolution of China's national identity. Anthropologists, historians and many other scholars should incorporate his powerful critique into their teaching and research. -- Peter Perdue, Yale University * China Quarterly *This is an insightful detailed study of ethnic identity and nationalism in China. Combining analyses of a wide range of topics, ranging through poetry, sexuality, children's stories, and historiography, Uradyn Bulag takes the reader on a journey through the evolution of Mongolian identity in China and shows how such identities are woven into the fabric of Chinese national identity. * The China Journal *The book is a welcome addition to the relatively scarce body of literature that seeks to generate greater understanding of history and culture from the Mongols' point of view. * Nationalities Papers *[This book] is likely to remain a major source both on the Mongols of China and the tortuous process of their absorption into the Chinese nation and may well become a model for studies of other national minorities of China. * Bulletin of the School of Oriental and African Studies *Old and thorny questions of ethnicity, nation, nationhood, nationality, national minority, national unity, ethinic or national identity, ways of imagery, national iconography and hagiography as weell as morals of ethnic policy receive in this book a vivid and fresh presentation in the mirror of changing luck of the Mongols of China's Inner Mongolia and Qinghai in the twentieth century. * Journal Of The Mongolia Society *Bulag offers a textured and sophisticated discussion of the Inner Mongol's efforts to affect their own degree of integration and distinction in the People's Republic of China. This book is a significant contribution not only to the field of Chinese Area Studies, but also to the more general literature of political anthropology and cultural geography. -- Alexander C. Diener, Pepperdine UniversityOld and thorny questions of ethnicity, nation, nationhood, nationality, national minority, national unity, ethnic or national identity, ways of imagery, national iconography and hagiography as well as morals of ethnic policy receive in theis book a vivid and fresh presentation in the mirror of the changing luck of the Mongols of China's Innter Mongolia and Qinghai in the twentieth century. * Mongolian Studies *This book is highly recommended for all who wish to gain an understanding of the complexities of Mongol identity in modern-day China and the achievements and compromisees of Ulanhu. More generally, the book should be of interest to scholars of Chinese minority nationality policy and indeed all those with an interest in multi-culturalism and nation building in ethnically complex societies. * Journal of Asian Studies *Table of ContentsChapter 1 By Way of Introduction: Minzu Tuanjie and Its Discontents Part 2 Producing and Reproducing National Unity Chapter 3 Ritualizing National Unity: Modernity at the Edge of China Chapter 4 Naturalizing National Unity: Political Romance and the Chinese Nation Part 5 Tensions of Empire Chapter 6 From Inequality to Difference: Colonial Contradictions of Class and Ethnicity in "Socialist" China Chapter 7 Rewriting "Inner Mongolian" History after the Revolution: Ethnicity, Nation, and the Struggle for Recognition Part 8 Models and Morality Chapter 9 Models and Morality: The Parable of the "Little Heroic Sisters of the Grassland" Chapter 10 The Cult of Ulanhu: History, Memory, and the Making of an Ethnic Hero

Rowman & Littlefield Publishers Empty Cages
Book SynopsisDescribed by Jeffrey Masson as ''the single best introduction to animal rights ever written,'' this new book by Tom Regan will structure the animal rights debate for generations to come. In a style at once simple and elegant, Regan dispels the negative image of animal rights advocates perpetrated by the mass media, unmasks the fraudulent rhetoric of ''humane treatment'' favored by animal exploiters, and explains why existing laws function to legitimize institutional cruelty. Written by the leading philosophical spokesperson for animal rights, Tom Regan''s shocking exposZ of animal abuse makes an essential and lasting contribution that will significantly impact the history of animal rights advocacy in America.Trade ReviewTom Regan's Empty Cages is a powerful call for justice on one of the most urgent issues human society faces. Calmly, lucidly, he asks readers to confront the miserable conditions we have inflicted on animals—not only in the familiar cases of factory farming, product testing, and hunting, but in less well-documented areas such as greyhound racing and circus performance. Answering the charge that advocates for animal rights are crazy extremists, he shows convincingly that they are, instead, thoughtful people who follow an argument to its logical conclusion. The reader has three choices: find a flaw in the argument, work for change, or throw the book away and try to forget it. The indelible force of Regan's argument makes the third course very difficult. -- Martha C. Nussbaum, University of ChicagoEmpty Cages will do for the animal rights movement what Silent Spring did for the environmental movement. -- Howard Lyman, author of Mad Cowboy"If you are only going to read one book about animal rights, this is the one to read." -- Ray Greek, M.D., co-author of Specious ScienceTom Regan delivers a searing indictment of the way we treat animals in the world we have made for ourselves, and presents a trenchant case that animals have or should have rights in the same way that human beings have. -- J. M. Coetzee, winner of the 2003 Nobel Prize for LiteratureThe book you are holding in your hands is, in my estimation, the single best introduction to the topic of animal rights ever written. -- Jeffery Moussaieff MassonEvery veterinarian should read Tom Regan's Empty Cages, and every student of veterinary medicine should be required to read it. This book is important to the future integrity of our profession." -- Jean Greek, DVM, DACVD, co-author of Specious ScienceEvery so often a book is written that is destined to change the way people think. Tom Regan has written just such a book. Empty Cages is compelling because it is logical, rational, and written in an elegantly simple style. It will educate and sadden you, and make you angry, but never is it inflammatory. Reading it may not convert you into an animal rights advocate, at least not immediately, but it will most definitely give you an understanding of and sympathy for the movement. And all animals, everywhere, will benefit. Please buy this book, read it, and tell your friends about it. Everyone needs a copy on their bookshelf. -- Jane GoodallTom Regan is the Tom Paine of animal rights, the rational visionary who, while passionately defending the rights of man, no less passionately defends the rights of animals. His contributions are historically unprecedented. The animal rights movement may have evolved from the humane feelings of compassion and mercy. In Tom Regan, it has found the voice of reason. -- Paul Watson, co-founder of Greenpeace, founder and president of the Sea Shepherd Conservation SocietyEmpty Cages is a long-awaited and much-welcomed personal and heartfelt book written by the 'dean' of the modern animal rights movement. Covering a broad range of important topics in an easy-to-read style, Tom Regan dispenses with misleading stereotypes about animal advocates and shows how nonsensical it is to label those who work on behalf of animals as 'radicals' or 'extremists.' . . . Empty Cages is a must-read and deserves the widest of audiences. -- Marc Bekoff, author of The Animals' Agenda: Freedom, Compassion, and Coexistence in the Human Age and Canine Confidential: Why Dogs Do What They DoAnimal factory farmers hide behind such phrases as 'humane treatment' and 'responsible care.' Tom Regan gently but honestly takes you into the hog and chicken barns, onto the cattle feedlots; after that, it is up to you. This thoughtful book deserves a wide readership. -- Maxine Kumin, Pulitzer Prize winning poet and author of Always Beginning: Essays on a Life in Poetry (2000)The major animal user industries and governments throughout the world say they treat animals 'humanely.' Empty Cages exposes the myth. Compassionate people will be outraged when they read about the mind-numbing cruelty inflicted upon our fellow creatures. The challenge of animal rights is simple: Treat other animals with the same respect that we would treat one another—a truly revolutionary idea. -- Jeremy Rifkin, author of The Biotech Century and Beyond BeefTom Regan's Empty Cages is for everyone who cares about animals: It will inform those new to animal advocacy, inspire those already on the front lines, and empower both. This book will define the future vitality and growth of the animal rights movement for generations to come. If you want the full story about animal rights, you must read Empty Cages. -- Kim Stallwood, president, Institute for Animals and SocietyIn a world where exploitation of other species has become mechanized and institutionalized, the animals need a spokesman. That voice belongs to Tom Regan, whose Empty Cages is a clearly written, eloquent argument in favor of compassion for the beings with which we share the planet. Far from a polemic, it's an appeal to reason. Like Matthew Scully's Dominion, the book is both a personal story of Regan's own evolution to animal rights and a ringing critique of the casual cruelty that has come to inform our daily lives. Read this book and you'll think twice about eating meat, watching a circus, wearing fur or supporting animal-based research. -- Jim Motavalli, editor, E: The Environmental MagazineAll who care for animals, and those who see animal rights advocacy as misanthropic extremism should read this book. It is a rude awakening—and a clarion call—exposing the sham of 'humane standards' and the lie of 'unavoidable necessity' touted by the industries of cruel animal exploitation. Tom Regan argues with logic and compassion why such outrageous mistreatment must be abolished for the good of all. -- Michael W. Fox, veterinarian, author, and syndicated columnistTom Regan is a brilliant visionary. His new book, Empty Cages, debunks myths and exposes unscrupulous practices hidden from public view. People who are willing to 'question authority' need to read this original, illuminating, and thorough examination of the case for animal rights. -- Neal Barnard, M.D., president, Physicians Committee for Responsible MedicineThis is the book that will inspire the next wave of animal rights activism. And the next wave after that one. -- Gary Kowalski, author, The Bible According to Noah and Science and the Search for GodEmpty Cages is among the most important books ever written on the great subject of how we humans treat and relate to animals. A rare and special book that can help us to awaken to our humanity. -- John Robbins, author of Diet For A New America and The Food Revolution[This book] is an invaluable introduction to a critical re-examination of our relationship to animals. It deserves to be widely read. * New Scientist *Empty Cages' greatest contribution is the frank assessment of the current state of the movement and the blueprint for 'Moving Forward.' . . . Empty Cages was also an enjoyable read. -- Robert Leonard * The American Vegan *Of value to everyone. * Vegnews *Professor Regan's book is like no other. It has all the virtues of good philosophy, but is unique in that it tells the story of how he began to see that respect for animals requires vegetarianism.Empty Cages is an excellent introduction for newcomers to the world of animal rights. * Animal Guardian *"This book is persuasive." -- M.L. * The Environmental Magazine *Table of ContentsPart 1 PROLOGUE: The Cat Part 2 PART I NORMAN ROCKWELL AMERICANS Chapter 3 Who Are You Animal Rights Advocates Anyway?
