Book SynopsisIn the new century, governments face three challenges for their social policies. Their efforts to improve their citizens' well-being must be consistent with the development of the world economy, and should if possible enhance the situation of the poorest populations.Trade Review“In more than 20 books, Bill Jordan has made a unique contribution to topical debates in social policy and international perspectives on welfare. Social Policy for the Twenty-First Century fits the track record. It is imaginative and wide ranging. Jordan has a gift for writing in a way that combines challenging ideas with readability ... This is an excellent overview of social policy on the world stage.” Times Higher Education Supplement “A tour de force, presenting a powerful critical analysis of the most significant and politically important issues in social policy today. This book deserves to be read by a far wider audience than social policy academics and students.” Journal of Social Welfare and Family Law “Provides rich materials, mostly based on aggregated comparative data or impressive case studies, that attain a truly global reach [and] with a comprehensive and far-reaching view on relevant issues and current trends and puts forward important analytical challenges opening the field to social policy theory and empirical research to be developed in the years to come.” International Journal of Urban and Regional Research “Bill Jordan's magpie approach to scholarship once again enables him to pick up for scrutiny all the big issues of the day; the impact of the global economy and global policies upon welfare systems, the conversion of welfare users from citizens into consumers, the stalling of well-being and the problems of sustainability. His creative imagination links all of these issues and leads him to ask whether cosmopolitanism and a grand global social contract such as implied by a global basic income would be the way to reconcile individual autonomy, collective belonging and sustainability.” Bob Deaconm, University of Sheffield “Social Policy for the Twenty-First Century provides a thoughtful and comprehensive analysis of soical policies and their roles in the transformations in human development, economic development, social relations, politics, redistribution, and social justice in the current intensely globalized era. The volume is most impressive in its truly global reach, and in the fascinating cases that serve as examples of the complex issues of wellbeing and policy.” Joya Misra, University of Massachusetts “Claims to have captured what is at stake for the social policies of the new century are often hyperbole. Not here. Bill Jordan's readers are sometimes invited to contemplate a vast landscape; sometimes required to dive down and explore the local setails. The ride is always exhilarating. By challenging the 'common sense' of the existing welfare consensus Jordan underlines the point of academic and political inquiry: to help create the common sense of the future.” Tony Fitzpatrick, University of NottinghamTable of ContentsList of Tables. • The Governance of Climate Change

John Wiley and Sons Ltd The Governance of Climate Change

Book SynopsisClimate change poses one of the greatest challenges for human society in the twenty-first century, yet there is a major disconnect between our actions to deal with it and the gravity of the threat it implies. In a world where the fate of countries is increasingly intertwined, how should we think about, and accordingly, how should we manage, the types of risk posed by anthropogenic climate change? The problem is multi-faceted, and involves not only technical and policy specific approaches, but also questions of social justice and sustainability. In this volume the editors have assembled a uniquerange of contributors who together examine the intersection between the science, politics, economics and ethics of climate change. The book includes perspectives from some of the world''s foremost commentators in their fields, ranging from leading scientists to political theorists, to high profile policymakers and practitioners. They offer a critical new approach to thinking about climate change, and help express a common desire for a more equitable society and a more sustainable way of life.Trade Review"Quotes from the text are certain to be hallmarks of student essays on the subject for years to come. A vital snapshot of the contemporary climate change arena."Political Studies Review"A refreshing addition to the growing literature in several respects, most notably for its direct attention to the question of framing. This volume incorporates a range of thoughtful scientific, economic and ethical arguments plus an excellent overview."International Affairs "A useful resource for understanding the complex and multi-faceted challenge." Global Journal "This book, which includes contributions from prominent climate change experts from across a range of disciplines, provides insightful and innovative commentary on the nature of climate change and the future of climate change governance. The fresh perspectives offered and the extensive expertise of the contributors make this book a must-read for anyone interested in climate policy."Rajendra Pachauri, Chairman, Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change "In their book The Governance of Climate Change: Science, Politics and Ethics, David Held, Angus Hervey and Marika Theros have assembled an extraordinary panel of both insiders and analysts of the climate change regime. It is an up-to-date, very thoughtful assessment of where we are in the difficult process of global action on climate change. E-International Relations "From front cover to concluding punchline, with brilliant insights in between, this is a great book - exactly what is needed to reinvigorate a stale climate debate." Times Higher Education "A great virtue of the book is its exceptionally clear structure ... Harris' mix of cultural and ethical change is certainly a key component in the sources of transformation we need to focus our attention on." Journal of Global Faultlines "'Fixing' climate politics is a near-impossible task, but Paul Harris points to a way forward that does hold out some hope. His clearly written book will also be useful as an introduction to the problem of climate change and the politics associated with it." 1 in stock

Book SynopsisCanada and the United States exchange the world''s highest level of bilateral trade, valued at $1.4 billion a day. Two-thirds of this trade travels on trucks. Heavy Traffic examines the way in which the regulatory reform of American and Canadian trucking, coupled with free trade, has internationalized this vital industry. Before deregulation, restrictive entry rules had fostered two separate national highway transportation markets, and most international traffic had to be exchanged at the border. When the United States deregulated first, the imbalance between its opened market and Canada's still-restricted one produced a surprisingly difficult bilateral dispute. American deregulation was motivated by domestic incentives, but the subsequent Canadian deregulation blended domestic incentives with transborder rate comparisons and concerns about trade competitiveness.Daniel Madar shows that deregulation created a de facto regime of free trade in trucking services. RTrade ReviewProfessor Madar provides a strong, well-crafted and insightful account of the process by which the highly regulated trucking industry was deregulated after 1980 in the U.S. and Canada, and how, in conjunction with free trade and industrial changes, the trucking business has been transformed. -- The Donner Prize JuryTable of ContentsPrefaceAcronyms1 Introduction2 The State in Action: Regulation’s Origins and Effects3 The State Withdraws: Critique and Reform in the United States4 Deregulation, Discrimination, and Diplomacy: The Trucking War5 The State Withdraws: Reform, Trade, and Federalism in Canada6 After Deregulation7 ConclusionNotes; Bibliography; Index

Book SynopsisCanada has always been a trading nation. From the early days of fur and fish, to the present, when a remarkable ninety percent of our gross national product is attributable to exports and imports, Canadians have relied on international trade to bolster our economy. A Trading Nation, Michael Hart''s brilliantly crafted overview and analysis of the historical foundations of modern Canadian trade policy, is the first survey to address the history of Canadian commercial policy in over fifty years.Taking the view that to understand the present and better prepare for the future, we must first comprehend the past, Hart skilfully guides readers through more than three centuries of Canadian trade history. His engaging narrative explains how Canadians, who currently enjoy one of the highest standards of living in the world, have largely come to accept that a country that derives much of its wealth from international commerce has much to gain from an open, well-ordered internatTrade ReviewThis book is the long-awaited, first modern, comprehensive history of Canadian trade policy ... Book SynopsisIn Carefair, Paul Kershaw urges us to resist this private/public distinction, and makes a convincing case for treating caregiving as a matter of citizenship that obliges and empowers everyone in society.Trade ReviewThis is a book well worth reading. It squarely addresses a policy issue that is fundamental to the pursuit of quality and equity, it is theoretically engaged while making concrete policy proposals, and it is closely argued ... Book SynopsisIs Canada becoming a more polarized society? Or is it a kind-hearted nation that takes care of its disadvantaged?Trade ReviewToo often inequality is considered only in terms of incomes. This book, written by some of the best researchers in the field, expands the economic perspective to include consumption, time, and participation. And it focuses on specific groups for which inequality is a compelling issue: kids, women, and ethnic groups. Its multidimensional perspective on inequality in Canada is so successful that it could be a model for future attempts in other countries. -- Barbara Boyle Torrey, co-editor of The VulnerableTable of ContentsFigures and Tables1 Dimensions of Inequality in a Just Society / David A.
