Book Synopsis A fundamental work on the use of scripture for decoration and furnishing in Protestant churches Inventory of text use in Calvinist Churches in the Dutch provinces between ca 1575-1800 The visual display of Scripture became common in Dutch Calvinist churches after the "Beeldenstorm": text panels and text paintings filled the lacunas left by removed images and altars. This richly illustrated volume shows how text decoration marked the Reformed appropriation of church space. This book shows how text decoration evolved into an innovative form of Reformed visual culture after iconoclasm, and was used to transform church spaces to accommodate Reformed worship. A story of continuity throughout the Reformation appears in the pre-Reformation roots of designs and spatial arrangements of displayed texts, beyond evident and major change. The work is based on a comprehensive inventory of text panels and text paintings installed in churches throughout the Dutch provinces between ca 1575–1800. A North Sea perspective presents text decoration as a universal Protestant phenomenon, which took different forms according to the liturgical and dogmatic requirements of denominations: from English Ten Commandments boards, and catechism altarpieces in churches in the Lutheran Danish Kingdom, to Lutheran text altarpieces that showcase the presence of Calvinism in northwest Germany.

Book SynopsisTrade Review"Above the Fray is a major effort to analyze the development of a distinct humanitarian field animated by the religious worldview of the nineteenth Calvinist milieu of Geneva, which connects a network of philanthropists, pacific activists, and religious actors concerned with addressing human tragedies. In telling the story of the emergence of this institutional field, Dromi innovates by bringing meaning-making into Bourdieusian field analysis in a non-reductivist fashion. Thus, he makes a brilliant contribution to historical sociology, and offers a much-needed addition to the sociological theory of fields. His book will be a crucial point of reference for several fields of research in the years to come."--Michele Lamont, professor of sociology and African and African American studies, Harvard University "Humanitarianism is not just an ethical orientation, but a whole sector of social institutions and practical actions. Dromi's Above the Fray superbly illuminates both the history of this field since the founding of the Red Cross and its increasingly difficult challenges today."--Craig Calhoun, university professor of social sciences, Arizona State University

Book SynopsisHeaven's Wrath explores the religious thought and religious rites of the early Dutch Atlantic world. D. L. Noorlander argues that the Reformed Church and the West India Company forged and maintained a close union, with considerable consequences across the seventeenth century.Dutch merchants, officers, sailors, and soldiers found in their faith...Trade ReviewHeaven's Wrath is a well-written and enjoyable monograph based on thorough research in an enormous collection of primary sources by an author who demonstrates joy in writing. Noorlander has written a book that is a boon for everyone interested in any religious element of the Dutch Atlantic. It will prove to be a welcome reference (in both the text itself and its footnotes) for everyone working on this general topic. * New West Indian Guide *For me, as a Dutch scholar of New Netherland, Heaven's Wrath is a nail in the coffin of the antiquated idea that New Amsterdam was founded solely 'to make a buck,'. Heaven's Wrath is a deeply impressive, even-handed, and nuanced treatment of the relationship between faith, worship, and the emerging capitalist economy of the Dutch Republic, as epitomized in the West India Company. It is an important contribution to the scholarship of the Atlantic World. * The New England Quarterly *Heaven's Wrath adds an important perspective to the growing scholarship that shows that the company's objectives were not exclusively or even largely commercial. * William & Mary Quarterly *In Heaven's Wrath, the American historian Danny Noorlander successfully disproves some of the 'most persistent claims' made in Anglo-American scholarship about the role of religion in early modern Dutch expansion. * Low Countries Historical Review *Writing with clarity, sardonic humor, and a vibrant selection of quotes from diligently mined materials, D. L. Noorlander gives a fresh account of the often-separate institutional histories of the seventeenth-century Dutch Reformed Church and the Dutch West India Company (WIC). He provides plentiful evidence that spiritual zeal drove Dutch colonization in the Atlantic, and that it was religious rigor among the WIC's administrators and their colonial directors and ministers, not laxity, that prevented the widespread conversion of conquered or neighboring populations. * Early American Literature *Noorlander, fluent in Dutch, exploits both English and Dutch sources to good effect. He shines a bright light on how churchmen forged a moral edge to the commercial ambitions of the West India Company. With "God and Mammon" cast as "partners" in the era of Dutch Atlantic expansion—and near equal partners at that—Noorlander presents a significant correction to the popular view that only New England Puritans can claim the mantle of sublime religious motivation for their colonial conquests. * Journal of British Studies *Heaven's Wrath is a groundbreaking work that will become the standard for those seeking to understand the role of the DRC [Dutch Reformed Church] and WIC [West India Company] in the early modern Atlantic world. * Church History *In Heaven's Wrath, Noorlander provides a new focused study of the Netherlands' Atlantic Empire that dismisses one old idea and breathes new life into another as part of his analysis of Calvinist influence in the West India Company (WIC). He effectively challenges prevailing truisms regarding the Dutch Empire in West Africa, Brazil, the Caribbean, and New Netherland. * Pennsylvania History *Table of ContentsAcknowledgments Introduction: The Role of Reformed Christianity in the Commercial and Colonial Endeavors of the Dutch Golden Age 1. Scottish History Society The Perth Kirk Session Books 15771590

    5 in stock

Book SynopsisSixteenth-century documents from the parochial church court reveal huge detail about the daily lives of ordinary Scottish townspeople of the time. The Calvinist Reformation in Scottish towns was a radically transformative movement. It incorporated into urban ecclesiastical governance a group of laymen - the elders of the kirk session - drawn heavily from the crafts guilds aswell as wealthy merchants. These men met at least weekly with the minister and comprised a parochial church court that exercised an unprecedented discipline of the lives of the ordinary citizenry. They pried into sexual behaviour, administered the hospital and other poor relief, ordered fostering of orphans, oversaw the grammar school, enforced sabbath observance, investigated charges of witchcraft, arbitrated quarrels and punished people who railed at their neighbours. In times of crisis like the great plague of 1584-85, they rationed food sent from other towns and raised an already high bar on moral discipline to avert further divine wrath. The minute books of Perth's session, established in the 1560s and surviving most fully from 1577, open a window on this religious discipline, the men who administered it, and the lay people who both resisted and facilitated it, negotiating its terms to meet theirown agendas. They are presented here with full introduction and explanatory notes. Margo Todd is Walter H. Annenberg Professor of History, University of Pennsylvania.

Book SynopsisAbraham Kuyper believed that Jesus is King of all creation, making it absurd to distinguish between Christian life inside and outside the church. In previous volumes of Pro Rege, Kuyper examined Christ's universal kingship and its implications for the life of the church and the family; in this third volume, he extends his analysis of Christ's kingship and rule to areas of society not encompassed by the family and the church - specifically, culture and the arts, civil society, and government. Created in partnership with the Abraham Kuyper Translation Society and the Acton Institute for the Study of Religion & Liberty, the Abraham Kuyper Collected Works in Public Theology marks a historic moment in Kuyper studies—one that will deepen and enrich the church's public theology. Based in Grand Rapids, Michigan, the Acton Institute is a nonprofit research organization dedicated to the study of free-market economics informed by religious faith and moral absolutes.

Baker Publishing Group Letters to a Young Calvinist – An Invitation to

Book SynopsisWho would have guessed that something as austere as Calvinism would become a hot topic in today's postmodern culture? At the 500th anniversary of John Calvin's birth, new generations have discovered and embraced a "New Calvinism," finding in the Reformed tradition a rich theological vision. In fact, Time cited New Calvinism as one of "10 Ideas Changing the World Right Now." This book provides pastoral and theological counsel, inviting converts to this tradition to find in Calvin a vision that's even bigger than the New Calvinism might suggest. Offering wisdom at the intersection of theology and culture, noted Reformed philosopher James K. A. Smith also provides pastoral caution about pride and maturity. The creative letter format invites young Calvinists into a faithful conversation that reaches back to Paul and Augustine, through Calvin and Edwards, extending to Kuyper and Wolterstorff. Together they sketch a comprehensive vision of Calvinism that is generous, winsome, and imaginative.Table of ContentsIntroductionLetter 1 - Welcome to the FamilyLetter 2 - On Religious PrideLetter 3 - Proud to Be a Calvinist?Letter 4 - Grace All the Way DownLetter 5 - God Owes Us NothingLetter 6 - God Doesn't Even Owe Us an AnswerLetter 7 - Semper ReformandaPostcard from GenevaLetter 8 - A Historical Tour of Reformed TheologyLetter 9 - Augustine, Patron Saint of the ReformersPostcard from PrincetonLetter 10 - To be Reformed Is to Be CatholicLetter 11 - On Being "Confessional"Letter 12 - Beyond WestminsterLetter 13 - God's "Social" GospelLetter 14 - Our Promise-Keeping GodPostcard from AmsterdamLetter 15 - Elected to LoveLetter 16 - Church MattersLetter 17 - Too Reformed for Church?Postcard from SeoulLetter 18 - On Grumpy SpeculationsLetter 19 - Wide-Angle CalvinismLetter 20 - Far as the Curse Is FoundLetter 21 - What Are We Saved For? Book SynopsisAnna Maria van Schurman was widely regarded as the most erudite woman in seventeenth-century Europe. As “the Star of Utrecht,” she was active in a network of learning that included the most renowned scholars of her time. Known for her extensive learning and her defense of the education of women, she was the first woman to sit in on lectures at a university in the Netherlands and to advocate that women be admitted into universities. She was proficient in fourteen languages, including Latin, Greek, Hebrew, Arabic, Syriac, Aramaic, Persian, Samaritan, and Ethiopian, as well as several vernacular European languages. This volume presents in translation a remarkable collection of her letters and poems—many of which were previously unpublished—that span almost four decades of her life, from 1631 to 1669. Trade Review“This volume of letters and poems, which comes at a propitious time in Anna Maria van Schurman scholarship, is far more inclusive than anything I have seen, and will interest a potentially large audience of knowledgeable readers. The letters included here, in superior translations, display the art of letter writing in all its facets and possibilities, trace the continued exchange of ideas with members of van Schurman’s circle, and exemplify the scholarly debates of the seventeenth century, with a woman as one of the debaters.” -- Cornelia Niekus Moore, University of HawaiiTable of ContentsIllustrationsAbbreviationsAcknowledgmentsIntroductionThe Other VoiceHistorical and Religious Context of the Early Dutch Golden AgeLife and Published WorksAnna Maria van Schurman and Her Mentor, André Rivet Affairs of Church and State Anna Maria van Schurman as Religious Polemicist Anna Maria van Schurman and Female Members of Her Circle Anna Maria van Schurman and Constantijn Huygens, 1633–1669 Anna Maria van Schurman, Latin, and Letter Writing The Reception and Afterlife of Anna Maria van Schurman The KB CollectionA Curious Addition to the Manuscript (no. 58, 1:71)Note on the Text, Translation, and Cover PortraitThe Plan of the BookPART 1: Letters and Poems to and from Her Mentor, André Rivet, and Other Members of Her Circle, 1631–1652 PART 2: Anna Maria van Schurman and Constantijn Huygens: Letters and Poems, 1633–1669 Appendix A: Part 1 and 2 Chronologies and Chronological GraphsAppendix B: Additional Poems by Constantijn Huygens and Caspar Barlaeus to and about Anna Maria van Schurman, 1635–1650 Appendix C: Additional Letters to, from, and about Anna Maria van Schurman, 1636–1782Appendix D: A Biography of Anna Maria van Schurman, by Pierre YvonAppendix E: Examples of Anna Maria van Schurman’s Latin and French LettersBibliographyIndex

  • The Clergy in Early Modern Scotland

Boydell & Brewer Ltd The Clergy in Early Modern Scotland

Book SynopsisA nuanced approach to the role played by clerics at a turbulent time for religious affairs. From the early percolation of Protestant thought in the sixteenth century through to the controversies and upheaval of the civil wars in the seventeenth century, the clergy were at the heart of religious change in Scotland. By exploring their lived experiences, and drawing upon historical, theological, and literary approaches, the essays here paint a fresh and vibrant portrait of ministry during the kingdom's long Reformation. The contributors investigate how clergy, as well as their families and flocks, experienced and negotiated religious, social, and political change; through examination of both wider themes and individual case studies, the chapters emphasise the flexibility of local decision-making and how ministers and their families were enmeshed in parish dynamics, while also highlighting the importance of clerical networks beyond the parish. What emerges is a ministry that, despite the increasing professionalisation of the role, maintained a degree of local autonomy and agency. The volume thus re-focuses attention on the early modern European ministry, offering a multifaceted and historically attuned understanding of those who stood at the forefront of Protestant reform.Trade ReviewThese chapters harvest rich details of the everyday lives of the early modern clergy and their collaboration with their parishioners. [...] The introductory historiography, various approaches, and combined bibliography might make this collection serve as a vade mecum to such future studies of the early modern Scottish Church. -- SEVENTEENTH CENTURY NEWSThe book is a significant contribution to our understanding of early modern Scottish religious culture. * CHURCH HISTORY *This collection of essays provides a much-needed update to our understanding of the early modern men who answered the "calling of the ministrie" and the families who often supported them. * Scottish Historical Review *An outstanding and agenda-setting volume that puts the experience of Reformed ministers at the centre of the religious history of early modern Scotland. * New Books Network *This collection provides an invaluable contribution to the field of Scottish Reformation studies ... The contributors to both sections in this volume should be commended for their vast use of source material related to Scottish clergymen, especially those source collections previously ignored or underutilised. -- Journal of Ecclesiastical HistoryAs well as adding nuance and depth to our understanding of the Reformed church and its ministers, The Clergy in Early Modern Scotland is also a rallying cry for an increased focus on the human aspects to religion. * The Innes Review *Table of ContentsIntroduction Chris R. • Isaac Nelson: Radical Abolitionist, Evangelical

Liverpool University Press Isaac Nelson: Radical Abolitionist, Evangelical

Book SynopsisThis book reconsiders the career of an important, controversial, but neglected figure in this history of Irish Presbyterianism. The Revd Isaac Nelson is mostly remembered for his opposition to the evangelical revival of 1859, but this book demonstrates that there was much more to Nelson’s career. Nelson started out as a protégé of Henry Cooke and as an exemplary young evangelical minister. Upon aligning himself with the Belfast Anti-Slavery Society and joining forces with American abolitionists such as Frederick Douglass and William Lloyd Garrison, Nelson emerged as a powerful voice against compromise with slaveholders. One of the central objectives of this book is to show that anti-slavery, especially his involvement with the ‘Send Back the Money’ controversy in the Free Church of Scotland and the debate over fellowship with slaveholders at the Evangelical Alliance, was crucially important to the development of Nelson into one of Irish Presbyterianism’s most controversial figures. His later opposition to the 1859 Revival has often been understood as being indicative of Nelson’s opposition to evangelicalism. This book argues that such a conclusion is mistaken and that Nelson opposed the Revival as a Presbyterian evangelical. His later involvement with the Land League and the Irish Home Rule movement, including his tenure as the Member of Parliament for County Mayo, could be easily dismissed as an entirely discreditable affair. While avoiding romantic nostalgia in relation to Nelson’s nationalism, this book argues that Nelson’s basis for advocating Home Rule was not as peculiar as it might first appear.Trade ReviewReviews ‘An interesting, probing, and thoroughly documented study of an importantly unconventional protagonist in several major religious and political debates, with reverberations far beyond Belfast or Ulster, which will make a considerable impact not merely on students of Ulster’s religious history, but on the broader field of Irish political history.' Professor David Fitzpatrick, Trinity College Dublin

Book SynopsisTrade ReviewStreams of scholarship flow together in Campagna-Pinto’s insightful and well-argued book: the reach of American philosophy beyond the classic pragmatists, and the significance of American religious traditions for shaping trunk lines of American thought and culture. For this enterprise, the author has well-chosen examples in Jonathan Edwards and William James, two prime intellectual engines of the American “quest or experiment,” as Campagna-Pinto puts it. Edwards and James shared an enriched empiricism, “stereoscopic” in its attention to the worlds of the heart and mind. And this book is comprehensive: it can appeal to students of religious studies, philosophy, and intellectual history; moreover, its careful reading of disparate topics, including rhetoric, suicide, art, the elusiveness of intimacy, and democracy suggests its ability to contribute to a variety of fields -- Paul Croce, Stetson University, former President of the William James SocietyIn The Workshop of Being, Campagna-Pinto brings together the two biggest intellectuals in American history—the Calvinist Christian Jonathan Edwards and the post-Christian liberal William James—and gets them singing in harmony. Campagna-Pinto's penetrating readings of both thinkers moves beyond the labels that divide their legacies and into a realm of 'heart religion,' where earnest examination of personal experience and social relations brings Edwards and James together in the pursuit of 'strenuous democracy.' -- Amy Kittelstrom, Sonoma State UniversityWorkshop of Being provides a searching, deeply conceived, and entirely compelling examination of the religious thought of Edwards and James, one that also sheds important new light on the origins and development of the tradition of American pragmatism. Through a series of penetratingly exact readings, Campagna-Pinto elucidates an abiding concern shared by these two thinkers with the affective ground of speculative thought, while at the same time showcasing the manifest complexity and originality of each body of work. In doing so, he shows how the apparently disparate intellectual projects of these two major American thinkers converge in counseling theologians and philosophers alike to think with the "heart" not only the head. -- Alan Hodder, Hapshire CollegeTable of ContentsList of Abbreviations Acknowledgments Chapter 1: The Sacred Trace Chapter 2: A New Reach of Freedom Chapter 3: Heart Religion and the Pragmatist Imagination Chapter 4: The Art of Expansiveness Chapter 5: Strenuous Democracy and the Workshop of Being Notes Bibliography About the Author
