Relatively easy to learn, the technique lends itself to creating lovely homemade artwork, beautiful journal pages or delicate painted notes and cards for friends and family. Lettering with Love advises on the basic tools and techniques, with step-by-step instructions for a range of different projects. * Woman Alive magazine *This exquisite book from the founders of the May & Berry studio shows readers how to create beautiful messages using hand lettering and water-colours. Broken down into easy-to-follow stages, the title explains how to use different pens and inks to produce gorgeous lettering, embellished with simple yet stunningly effective watercolour motifs. There are 10 projects inside, all with step-by-step instructions, and at the back of the book there's a treasure trove of botanical-style motifs and borders together with four delightful alphabets created by authors Sue Hiepler and Yasin Reddig. * Craft Focus Magazine Dec 2018/Jan 2019 *Say it like you mean it with a beautiful combination of hand lettering and watercolour painting. In an age of keyboards, printers and the Internet the very idea of writing something out by hand and decorating it makes it less “instant” and consequently a lot more special. Grab anything you can write with and some watercolours and get ready to make your mark. I confess to having had a go at real calligraphy using ink and a special pen and not getting very far with it. This book is all about a different method, known as faux calligraphy which is far simpler and less rule-bound. Basically it is about forming letters using first a pencil, and then any type of pen, brush or marker you like. The book starts by explaining all this and listing what you need; all fairly basic items most people (especially those into art or craft) already own. The faux calligraphy method is explained simply with a few examples, and then follows a short section about watercolouring. The rest of the book contains lovely projects which combine the two and are all about enjoying yourself and going with the flow when working, rather than worrying about perfection. Most of the painted embellishments are floral in nature, celebrating the garden. Instructions are given throughout on how to form the loose and flowing plants, and there are several lettering styles to try too. The book has hard covers so opens out neatly and stays obligingly flat for easy reference when working. Turn to the back for several alphabets to copy for practice plus some floral wreaths, pot plants, single blooms plus a few cacti. Working through all this is a great way of getting into the style, and it is a fun way of relaxing and producing something beautiful. The projects in here include pictures for walls and greetings cards, all of which can be resized and used as a starting point for your own ideas. I love something that is a bit different, and I haven’t seen a book on this subject before. A great way of saying what you want and getting creative that does not need a lot of outlay for materials. -- Rachel Hyde * myshelf.com *Not only is this a beautiful book to look at, it is filled with some stunning examples of watercolour artwork and hand lettering, that is both inspiring and easy to achieve with a little practice. Simple step by step instructions show you how to create a piece of artwork that will be perfect to give as a gift or to decorate your home. You do not need an expensive array of tools, just a pencil and some watercolour paints to get started will suffice. I love the idea of decorating journals, my love of papercrafting will really benefit with what I learn from this lesson in paint and ink. There is a gallery of painted flowers to encourage creativity and also included are lettering in both upper and lower case, as well as practice pages to help you develop your style. Lettering with Love is exquisite. It is wonderfully presented and would make a delightful gift. It is definitely on list of things to buy for my crafty friends. -- Tracy Shephard * Postcard Reviews *Written by Sue Hiepler and Yasmin Reddig, Lettering with Love shows readers how to create beautiful messages using a combination of hand lettering and watercolours. • The Joy of Modern Calligraphy: A Guide to the Art

Search Press Ltd The Joy of Modern Calligraphy: A Guide to the Art

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisA complete guide to modern calligraphy with Artsynibs. Joyce Lee first picked up a calligraphy pen when she started making stationery for her wedding. For her, it is now a way of life, her career and what she calls a 'calligraventure'. In this practical and inspiring book, Joyce introduces modern calligraphy, including the tools you need and how to use them. She teaches various techniques and methods for creating beautiful artwork to give you the confidence to embark on creative projects of your own, including handwritten envelopes, gift tags and an elegant monogram. To help you practise your handwriting skills, the book is accompanied by an envelope of photocopiable practice sheets, contained within an attractive hardback folder. However, this is more than just an instructional guide; it encourages you to find joy in committing your thoughts to paper. Joyce believes that calligraphy is not just about perfecting the strokes, but about patience, concentration and slowing down to be mindful of the moment. Creativity is at the heart of us all; it simply needs to be unlocked, nurtured and given an outlet. This book is everything calligraphy should be: classic, stylish, creative and thought-provoking. Fall in love with the art of handwritten lettering as you release your own creativity on the page.Trade ReviewFind joy in committing your thoughts to paper through the art of beautiful writing with Joyce Lee's The Joy of Modern Calligraphy. Including techniques and methods to create beautiful makes such as envelopes and gift tags, there are also practice sheets so you can improve your handwriting skills. * Crafts Beautiful *This is such a lovely book. I was pleasantly surprise to discover that it contained a folder type cover, which not only protects the book, but it also has a pocket for practice sheets (which are included). These images are clear and detailed. One of the things I especially like is the fact that the author encourages the reader to do each stage at their own pace and encourages self care and a sense of mindfulness. The book's exercises become more advanced as you progress through and at the end the book are some projects for the reader to try. I would highly recommend this book. -- Lisa J Parker * Customer Review *Beautifully presented book with a hard cover for storage of the book and practice sheets. The only downside is the envelope that houses the practice sheets is a little flimsy and needs to be used with care. The book itself is clearly written, the diagrams and photography are excellent and easy to follow explaining the use of all the different pens, nibs and materials. It takes you from composition through to small projects to get you going. The practice sheets are A4 and a really helpful addition. I am enjoying working my way through this book its quite relaxing and mindful. -- Bernadette McGowan * Customer Review *I was sent this book to review and it arrives as a hardback with two sections, one for the paperback book and one for some practice sheets included. These sheets are nice to have as being single sheets allow for easier use, rather than many books that have them inside the pages, making them harder to access. The book is a nice style and focuses on the holistic art of writing. You can tell that the author loves their work and their craft and wants to enable others to find the joy they do. The steps are clear and well laid out and not too overwhelming for beginners and you can definitely see the 'modern' feel in the different projects. Would be perfect for those who want to hand letter their own invitations for weddings or events etc. -- Katerina Serefoglou * Amazon Customer Review *This book arrived encased in a beautiful hard covered folder complete with 20 practice sheets, a good start from this respected publisher. The book itself is beautifully set out with clear advice, instructions and photographs throughout. Joyce takes you through the background to modern calligraphy, talks you through the tools required to get you started (you won't need many at outset) and a step-by-step approach to achieve the lettering. The book teaches one style of lettering, which I think helps to focus learning. As someone who has learnt various styles of calligraphy in the past, I think it is good to focus on one style when you are learning. There are suggestions within the book to vary the lettering and flourishes to suit your own style. Once you have mastered the basics, there are eight projects at the end of the book to get you started on your journey. A modern, easy to follow book that will soon have you writing with style. A great book for someone looking to improve their handwriting via a new hobby. -- Helen Todd * Amazon Customer Review *This book is gorgeous, I love the presentation and the hardcover to keep all your practice pages together is just perfect to me. This isn't a calligraphy how-to rammed with styles to copy, it's a complete calligraphy practice taking you through breathing, posture and tension to developing your own style. I tried calligraphy before and it looked ok but I've very much enjoyed going right back to the start again and being led through all the correct steps by this book (never have I prepared my nibs properly, I didn't even know it was a thing before now!) It's a very calming, meditative practice following along with the book and I've loved taking a little bit a day quietening the mind and focusing on just forming the right strokes, no distractions. I love the way the book is presented and it soothes my soul, I'm treating it as a bit of 'me time' every time I dip into it and I would absolutely gift this book to a friend. -- Racheal Hotchkiss * Amazon Customer Review *I love books - informative ones - however dislike 'coffee table books' (lots of photos, not much actual usable content/instruction). On first flick through I was worried, beautiful photos and calming colours - looks lovely but would it help a left-handed crafter who has given up looking at calligraphy books after some epic fails? When you look in the index there are only a couple of references to left-handedness, so I started reading the book from the beginning... and was immediately drawn in! Absolutely usable information about pens (how they work, preparing the nibs), inks and paper - straight away I was able to understand some of the splodgy messes of the past, and the description around body and paper positioning meant I could just 'have a play' and follow what was happening instead of looking for separate left-handed instructions. I love the '30-Day Calligraphy Challenge' and accompanying worksheets as it really breaks things down into manageable chunks both in terms of technique and time required each day (10 minutes or so) and I will be doing this. This book is perfect for a beginner or someone who has struggled in the past and should act as a springboard to venturing into more traditional styles of writing if desired. The projects at the end of the book are nice too if you need inspiration. -- Mandy Strahand * Amazon Customer Review *When looking for a good crafting guide, it can be hard to find something that will give you the in-depth training you want. Luckily, Joyce Lee’s The Joy of Modern Calligraphy offers everything you need and more. Delving deep into the theories, techniques and lifestyle that underpin the art of beautiful writing, Joyce’s book takes your calligraphy journey seriously. Her guidance is split into manageable sections, including a 30-day practice challenge she invites you to complete along the way. Even better, the book comes with 20 loose practise sheets for you to hone your new calligraphic mastery! * PaperCrafter Magazine *There are four things that in my opinion, set this book apart from other books about modern calligraphy: The high quality of the edition The reference to traditional calligraphy The precise approach to theory and practice The excellent support provided by pictures and photographs From the first impression, its size, hard cover, and excellent photos make the book stand out from the rest. But the most valuable difference is presenting the textbook and the practice sheets separately. That allows comfortable working whilst being able to see the text at the same time. The reference to traditional calligraphy is something that most modern calligraphy books ignore or mention lightly. In this book, a complete chapter not only describes the differences and the similarities between the two styles but illustrates those references with photos of other talented calligraphers as Rachel Yallop, Leanda Xavian, Huy Hoang Dao, Jessy Lim, Jason Peg, Rosana lbarrola, Brian Knowles, and Nicole Sprekelmann. This chapter also includes an example of Chinese calligraphy by Corrina Tai and ornamental calligraphy by Huy Hoang Dao. In the first half of the book, about ninety pages, all vital aspects of practising calligraphy, from posture to materials and techniques, are detailed. It is a solid starting point for beginners and a valuable reference for more experienced calligraphers. Joyce Lee's presentation on basic letter formation and variations of styles is straightforward, easy to follow and well-illustrated. These qualities are also present in the book's second part, with viable projects for every occasion. Book SynopsisLilian Armstrong is Professor of Art at Wellesley College, Massachusetts, and a specialist on Venetian Renaissance book illumination. She is the author of The Paintings and Drawings of Marco Zoppo and Renaissance Miniature Painters and Classical Imagery: The Master of the Putti and His Venetian Workshop, and she was a major contributor to the exhibition catalogue The Painted Page: Italian Renaissance Book Illumination 1450-1550 (ed. by Jonathan Alexander). Her publications have focussed particularly on the transition from illuminated manuscripts to the hand-illuminated early printed book in Venice. The present volume collects Professor Armstrong's papers on miniaturists active in Venice and Northern Italy in the 15th and early 16th centuries, and on the impact of the new invention of printing on these artists and their patrons. Included are papers on Marco Zoppo, primarily a monumental"painter, who nevertheless also painted in manuscripts and incunables. The studies variously identify miniaturists and designers of woodcuts through stylistic groupings, trace iconographic traditions for Pliny's Natural History and Petrarch's De viris illustribus, demonstrate the importance of heraldry for studying patronage of Venetian printed books, and explore the distribution of Venetian incunables throughout Europe based on analysis of their decoration.Table of ContentsThe Master of the Rimini Ovid: A Miniaturist and Woodcut Designer in Renaissance Venice Marco Zoppo e il Libro dei Disegni del British Museum: riflessioni sulle teste all'antica The Hand-Illumination of Printed Books in Italy 1465-1515 Paduan, Circle of Squarcione, Six Standing Men and Ten Battling Nudes Benedetto Bordon, miniator, and Cartography in Early Sixteenth-Century Venice Problems of Decoration and Provenance of Incunables Illuminated by North Italian Miniaturists Benedetto Bordon, Aldus Manutius, LucAntonio Giunta: Old Links and New Nicolaus Jenson's Breviarium Romanum, Venice, 1478: Problems of Decoration, and Distribution Copie di miniature del Libro degli Uomini Famosi, Poiane, 1476, di Francesco Petrarca, e il ciclo perduto di affreschi nella reggia carrarese di Padova Woodcuts for liturgical books published by LucAntonio Giunta in Venice, 1499-1501 Additional Notes Index

  • Lapis and Gold: Exploring Chester Beatty’s

Ad Ilissum Lapis and Gold: Exploring Chester Beatty’s

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisThe Chester Beatty Library’s 16th-century Ruzbihan Qur’an—produced in the city of Shiraz in southwest Iran—is one of the finest Islamic manuscripts known. In terms of both materials and workmanship, it is exquisite: lapis lazuli and gold, the two most expensive pigments available, are used on every page, while the rendering of the decoration is exceptionally fine. This is the most detailed and comprehensive study of any Islamic manuscript—and it is well worthy of such scrutiny. Praised in a 16th-century account as one of the finest calligraphers of his time, Ruzbihan Muhammad al-Tab`i al-Shirazi would have produced numerous Qur’ans during the course of his career, but only five signed by him have survived. Much of the study of this, surely his finest manuscript, is focussed on understanding the processes and procedures involved in the production of the manuscript and thus on gaining an insight into the problems faced by Ruzbihan and the other artists and how they resolved them. Certain surprising and never-before-seen techniques of production and `tricks-of-the trade’ have been uncovered. A large portion of the information presented is the result of very close examination, under high magnification, of the manuscript’s 445 folios (890 pages). Many of the reproductions included are of minute details of the decoration that are difficult, or even impossible, to see with the unaided eye. The book follows the order in which work on the manuscript would have progressed, beginning with an examination of Ruzbihan’s calligraphy, the various scripts he used to copy the text and the problems he faced, such as the spacing of the text and his errors and omissions. Additions, such as marginal notations, recitation marks and decorative devices indicating the divisions of the text, all of which guide the reciter in his reading of the Qur’an, are also considered. Although the manuscript’s renown has traditionally rested with the name of its calligrapher, it is equally the quality, extent, diversity and complexity of its superb decorative programme—the work of a team of highly skilled, yet anonymous artists and artisans—that sets the manuscript apart from most other 16th-century Persian Qur’ans. Fittingly, therefore, the bulk of the study focuses on this aspect of the manuscript. Major aspects of the illumination, such as its lavish beginning, middle and end illuminations, are examined as well as more minor elements such as the `rays’ that emerge from the frontis- and finispiece; even the tiniest of details are revealed, such as what are, in the book, termed `squiggles and eyes’, hidden amongst the illuminations and a challenge to find for the even the most eagle-eyed viewer. However, while many of the secrets of the production of the manuscript were revealed, many mysteries remain. Chief among these is the startling change in aesthetic evident in the illuminations of the final ten openings of the manuscript. Why such as change was undertaken—and then halted—is not known. As was increasingly revealed as study of the manuscript progressed—and as the reader of the book will quickly come to realise—Chester Beatty’s Ruzbihan Qur’an is an intriguing and very special manuscript.Trade ReviewProbably the most detailed examination of any complete Qur’an manuscript ever undertaken, of value to anyone involved in conservation or bibliography, and, indeed, since Ruzbihan and his colleagues undoubtedly achieved a great work of art, a source of delight to anyone who turns these pages ... there are few manuscript experts capable of Wright’s devotion to detail, but it is evident that what keeps her working on this great project is a driving enthusiasm for this superb artistic accomplishment, and she infects the reader with her passion. * The Art Newspaper *
