The book shows that debt growth in excess of GDP growth is a feature of modern economic systems, not a bugand thus ever-increasing leverage is built into the very structure of the economy. Vague uses the data presented in the book to show that rising debt is the primary source of economic growth, new money creation, and wealth creationbut that it also brings heightened inequality and can bring economic calamity when left unchecked.Vague also compares and contrasts the financial data of the U.S. to the world's other largest economies. As an expert on the role of private debt in the global economy, Vague offers an innovative set of

Profile Books Ltd DECARBONOMICS: & the post-pandemic world
Book SynopsisA book of two halves, Decarbonomics first sets the scene of current global economics, outlining the effect of the pandemic, the trade war between the US and China and the resulting fragmentation of globalisation. In the second half of the book, leading financial analyst Charles Dumas examines the economic reasons for action on climate change, and what form that might take. Dumas argues that investment to combat the changing climate will provide not only a boost to growth but also a rebalancing of geopolitics, benefiting those economies best placed to exploit the new technologies - possibly away from the oil-rich Middle East and towards the sun-rich Southern Hemisphere. He also examines the implications of a carbon tax, shifting economics to forge a financial solution to climate change. Drawing on original analysis by one of the world's leading macroeconomic forecasters, Decarbonomics shows how climate-change economics has shifted from a story of necessary sacrifice to one of opportunity.Trade ReviewCould the climate challenge rescue our economy from the weak demand that has afflicted it for decades? In this stimulating discussion of global macroeconomics and climate, Charles Dumas suggests that the investments needed to transform generation and use of energy could do more than reduce the threat of climate disaster: with the support of the right policies, they could help end our macroeconomic malaise. -- Martin Wolf * Financial Times *Charles Dumas shows how restoring economic growth and combating climate change are not in conflict but can be partners. * Lord (Mervyn) King, former governor of the Bank of England *It is most impressive, formidable in its determination to apply all that is admirable and pertinent in the high tradition of political economy to the huge issues posed by these topics.' * Peter Jay *

Critical Hits is a celebration of play and playfulness, and the lasting impact of videogames. Composed of sharp, impassioned, and inquisitive essays, this collection begins with an introduction by Carmen Maria Machado and presents video games through the eyes of eighteen writer-gamers as they straddle real and artificial worlds. In games, they find solace from illness and grief, test ideas about language, bodies, race, and technology, and see their experiences and identities reflected in-or complicated by-the interactive virtual realities they inhabit. From a deep dive into "portal fantasy" games by Charlie Jane Anders and a comic by MariNaomi about her time as a video game producer, to the overlaps in gaming and poetry by Stephen Sexton, Critical Hits illuminates fragments of an industry that is wildly popular, grossly misunderstood, and absolutely spellbinding.Trade ReviewThese fun, funny, occasionally cutting but often affirming essays celebrate the surprising potency of video games and virtual experiences. Emerald Publishing Limited Business Diplomacy by Multinational Corporations:
Book SynopsisOver the past two decades, increasing attention has been paid to the concept of business diplomacy. This is becoming more important for multinational corporations (MNCs) as they deal with an increasingly demanding and dynamic international business arena. Despite the growing literature on this phenomenon, there is no sound theory-based business diplomacy model that can help to understand MNCs' relationship-building activities in the global society and provide a normative, moral guide for MNCs on how to conduct business diplomacy successfully. In Business Diplomacy by Multinational Corporations, Huub Ruël turns to Catholic Social Thought (CST), an intellectual tradition extending back 2000 years that promotes the key principles of human dignity, the common good, solidarity and subsidiarity. According to CST, a business is a community of people and its purpose is to serve the common good. This clearly diverges from the dominant shareholder view of business and CST provides a basis for a normative business diplomacy model. This in turn provides a clear, distinctive instrument for MNCs to reflect on their purpose and role in the global society while also guiding and directing their relationship-building actions with other actors in the global society. This book is essential reading for researchers studying ethics and morality from an international business viewpoint.Table of ContentsChapter 1. Introduction Chapter 2. Multinational Corporations in a Dynamic International Business Arena Chapter 3. Business Diplomacy: A Review of the Literature and a Definition Chapter 4. Catholic Social Thought (CST) as a Source for a Business Diplomacy Model Chapter 5. Toward a CST-based Model of Business Diplomacy Chapter 6. Discussion and Conclusion

Penguin Books Ltd Gambling Man
Book SynopsisGambling Man is the biography of one of the world's least known but most consequential investors. Japan's Masayoshi Son has made and lost several fortunes, investing or controlling assets worth $1 trillion in the past two decades through his media-tech giant, SoftBank. He bankrolled Alibaba, China's internet colossus, before the world had heard about it; plotted with Steve Jobs to turn the iPhone into a wonder product; and financed hundreds of tech start-ups, fuelling the biggest boom Silicon Valley has ever seen. This book takes you on Son's wild ride, from his birthplace in a Korean slum in post-war Japan to the modern-day temples of power. It speeds through Donald Trump's golden skyscraper in Manhattan, the royal palaces of Riyadh and the throne rooms of China's Marxist rulers; all places where Son has deployed his unique blend of financial engineering and crazy risk-taking. Son's story captures a 25 year-span of hyper-globalisation in which money, technologies and ideas flowed freely. From the launch of the microchip to the advent of artificial intelligence, he has ridden the technological wave which has created extraordinary wealth and economic change. His topsy-turvy business career is testimony to the power of optimism, daring to dream, ever in search of the Next Big Thing. As an ethnic Korean in Japan, Son has overcome adversity and discrimination to become Japan's best-known businessman and empire-builder but he remains an elusive, intensely private figure. This book, by a former editor of the Financial Times, contains a wealth of new information and has had the co-operation of many of the key participants, including Son himself. Written with a verve appropriate to its subject, Gambling Man reveals the man behind the money, what drives him, why he matters, and what he plans for his next act.

Ad Lib Publishers Ltd Unequal: How extreme inequality is damaging
Book SynopsisThe ongoing war in Ukraine, between freedom and totalitarianism, has been brewing since the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989: the great victory of liberal democracy over communism. In recent decades, authoritarian regimes have proliferated or become emboldened – from Myanmar and North Korea to Venezuela, Saudi Arabia and, of course, China. At the same time, we have seen wildly overpriced stock markets, the emergence of decentralised finance and its associated cryptocurrencies, and the idolization of inordinately expensive things, from watches and customised trainers to rare whiskies and non-fungible tokens (NFTs). The decoupling of capitalism from democracy, which gathered pace in the 1990s, has fostered an economic system powered by greed alone, able to prosper in brutal dictatorships, unchecked even by the financial crisis of 2007/8. Rampant inequality, fuelled by radically increased money supply, has been the result, with a tiny fraction of the world’s population owning more than the rest put together. This inequality has incited social unrest and contributed to the undermining of faith in the institutions of the democratic state. The citizens of Western democracies have been left to the mercy of unfettered capitalism, becoming data subjects, endlessly surveilled, marshalled and polarised. Today’s extreme capitalism, promoted by Milton Friedman and others, is exemplified by its modern monopolists – Bill Gates, Jeff Bezos, Mark Zuckerberg and Elon Musk, whose fortunes have been built on often immoral, if not illegal actions, and whose headline-grabbing antics appear to be motivated more by ego than any genuine desire to do good for humanity. In the 1990s, an understanding of social justice and an appreciation of democracy still survived, but public discourse has grown increasingly polarised and angry. The authors draw a line from the robber barons of the 1990s tech revolution to Putin’s invasion of Ukraine, citing the marginalisation of democratic principles which has enabled the rise of authoritarian populists such as Vladimir Putin, Xi Jinping, Jair Bolsonaro and, of course, Donald Trump and Boris Johnson. An unanticipated fightback in Ukraine, with support from the EU and the West, has the potential to reclaim the lost spirit of freedom inherent in liberal democracy, but will it be enough?Trade ReviewPraise for The End of Money: ‘A page-turner rich in data and steeped with evidence and insights that flow from a deep understanding of the history of financial markets . . . a must-read before you buy your next – or first – non-fungible token, Chinese banking stock or US government bond’ Professor Adrian Saville, Gordon Institute of Business Science ‘A fascinating and enjoyable read . . . interspersed with illuminating anecdotes from our recent financial history . . . makes it clear that excessive debt and extreme money creation have eroded faith in the global financial system, perhaps best symbolised by the rise of cryptocurrencies’ Michael Jordaan, business Leader and venture capitalist

The story of one man's heroic fight against the odds and against the establishment. John Murray, you are indeed a hero' DCI Colin Sutton (ret'd) Senior Investigating Officer, the Millie Dowler enquiry On 17 April 1984, as demonstrators gathered outside the Libyan embassy in London, two gunmen lay in wait inside. At 10.18 a.m. automatic gunfire rained down on the protestors and WPC Yvonne Fletcher fell, mortally wounded. As his friend lay dying, PC John Murray made her a promise that he would not rest until those responsible had been brought to justice. Thirty-seven years would pass before he was able to fulfil that undertaking. While researching this moving account of one man’s dogged pursuit of justice for a murdered colleague, Matt Johnson uncovered secret-service deals and government duplicity, all part of a plan to force an end to the National Union of Mineworkers’ strike. He discovered the real reason Yvonne’s killers were allowed to go free and how events that day led to thirty years of growing political control of policing, resulting in the disarray increasingly evident today. This compelling account pulls seemingly unconnected threads into a coherent – and shocking – whole. It provides startling insights into how decisions taken by our politicians and the actions of our intelligence agencies, supposedly in our best interests, may be anything but.Trade Review‘An important book, especially now – both an intensely personal story, and a sober analysis of a political scandal’ -- Lee Child‘Espionage, betrayal, terrorism, corruption and murder. Emerald Publishing Limited The Emerald Handbook of Authentic Leadership
Book SynopsisThe Emerald Handbook of Authentic Leadership is a ground-breaking interdisciplinary collection, opening the black box of leadership authenticity to advance understanding of theory and practice. It presents a wide-ranging, diverse source of new concepts, theories, insights, applications to advance thinking and practice in leadership and leadership authenticity. The first publication of its kind, the contributors – leading scholars, researchers, business and NGO leaders, policy makers – explore differing, contrasting perspectives on the evolving, fluid subject of authentic leadership. The thematic sections examine ‘The Search for Authenticity from Theory to Practice’, ‘The Search for Authenticity from Practice to Theory’, and ‘Developing Authentic Leadership Values, Understanding and Practice’. The Emerald Handbook of Authentic Leadership is a quest for interdisciplinary insights arising out of theory and practice. It is intended for a wide readership interested in leadership and leadership authenticity in the contemporary world.Trade ReviewThe Emerald Handbook of Authentic Leadership is a remarkable reader covering the complexities of leading across time, and into the future, with authenticity. The handbook offers a fresh leadership perspective across a vast field of research, from leadership insight revealed by classic literature, to the role of political and multinational institutions, to the growing influence of the internet of things, and well beyond. Great leadership literature compels the individual to think well beyond the chapters. As the handbook is about original research into the topic, the questions and unique insights about the leadership conditions lead the reader to consider their own role and aspirations in leadership. It is truly a mind-expanding exploration into all things authentic leadership. -- Justin Ferbey, Deputy Minister of Economic Development, Yukon, CanadaLike many helpful big ideas, the notion of authentic leadership can prove to be remarkably slippery when subjected to close academic scrutiny. With contributions from a wide diversity of expert contributors, The Emerald Handbook of Authentic Leadership maps out and explores the boundaries of the landscape of authentic leadership, its literature, theory and practice, with commendable clarity and insight. I am encouraged to hope that its contribution will broaden our knowledge and understanding of the notion of authentic leadership, making it less slippery and more profoundly useful for many readers. -- Norman M. Fraser, PhD, IT entrepreneur, Adjunct Professor, Aalborg University Business School, Denmark.Scholars, practitioners, and the general public will enjoy this insightful handbook on authentic leadership lessons from AI, education, business, policy, NGO contexts, as well as COVID-19, which specifically benefits from considerable data and hindsight since the pandemic onset. This interdisciplinary author team blends historical approaches with the latest in the field to provide analysis and advice for leaders in corporations, non-profits, and the public sector. The variety of methodological approaches (e.g., bibliometrics, inductive qualitative research, and autoethnography) and contexts showcase state-of-the-art scholarship and practice in authentic leadership. -- Siri Terjesen, Professor, Florida Atlantic University, USIn today's fast-paced and ever-changing world, leadership plays an indispensable role in shaping society. With the emergence of alternative facts, truth decay, siloed thinking, and the unstoppable rise of AI, it has become increasingly difficult to come together and tackle regional and global issues while adhering to shared values. The Emerald Handbook of Authentic Leadership is a must-read for anyone who wants to understand and participate in the dialogue around the role of authentic leadership in today’s fluid world. It is a wide-ranging, interdisciplinary guide that serves as a catalyst for meaningful conversations about what it means to be an authentic leader and the important part it plays in our ability to navigate the challenges of the 21st century. I believe it spurs on multi stakeholder debate and further collaboration on the complex topic of authentic leadership. -- Alex Tveit, Co-founder and CEO, Sustainable Impact Foundation, Toronto, CanadaIn a world where the old paradigms are breaking down, we need leaders to guide our politics, institutions and organisations through the turbulent waters of the 21st century and enable the world to break through to new sustainable models of growth. What is leadership? How do we define it and what does ‘good’ look like, in a world increasingly disrupted by existential threats such as pandemics and climate change? What do we mean by ‘authentic and how does it “fit” with different cultures, social norms and the increasing intrusion of technology into decision-making? Finally, as new types of organisations and businesses emerge, what types of leadership are needed? The Emerald Handbook of Authentic Leadership gives us perspectives from multiple dimensions as to how we might answer these vital questions. It will provoke thinking and, hopefully, lead to different ways of being and seeing leaders in our modern world. -- Steven Parker, Leadership Coach, Chair of TAA Tech Ventures, UKTable of ContentsPart 1. Book SynopsisDespite the developing richness of the field of Entrepreneurship research, the output still suffers from a lack of methodological diversity. This edited collection stimulates discussion, shares practice and explores challenges around current and new approaches to inquiry - encompassing all aspects of entrepreneurship research, from its conception through to its execution and related issues such as education, training and learning. Advancing the way, we learn, think about and engage with various modalities of inquiry in Entrepreneurship research and practice, and its related subjects and areas of interest, the chapter authors draw inspiration from leading academics in the subject areas across the field. Emerald Publishing Limited Imperialism and the Political Economy of Global
Book SynopsisThe Covid-19 pandemic has brought the nagging issue of the Global South's debt back into the spotlight. With declining export earnings and tax revenues, many countries in Africa, Latin America and Asia have found themselves objectively unable to service their foreign currency debt. This situation, reminiscent of the international debt crisis of the 1980s and 1990s, is the backdrop of the 38th volume of the Research in Political Economy series edited by Ndongo Samba Sylla. In Imperialism and the Political Economy of Global South’s Debt, expert contributions connect the history of this issue with a range of factors including class dynamics, the changing landscape of sovereign debt markets, the global liquidity cycle, the enduring constraints of commodity dependence, ecological sustainability and the limitations of the current ad hoc sovereign debt restructuring procedures. In contrast to orthodox accounts that view debt crises in the Global South as a cyclical problem or as consequences of 'mismanagement' or 'fiscal irresponsibility'. Imperialism and the Political Economy of Global South’s Debt recognises the systemic nature of the Global South’s external debt, revealed only further by the economic uncertainty of the Covid-19 pandemic, as well as the need to analyse it in relation to existing imperialist structures.Table of ContentsPart 1: Case Studies Chapter 1.
