  • Uncertain Futures

    Cambridge University Press Uncertain Futures

Book SynopsisWhy is it hard to solve the climate crisis, and what can we do? This book answers these questions, which are of interest to the public, academics, and businesspeople. Using stories from the front lines of the energy transition, we show how to unlock the climate impasse.Trade Review'Uncertain Futures builds around the seldom acknowledged reality that the clean energy transition involves place-based economic disruption of breathtaking scale and pace, generating legitimate worker and community concerns. The political headwinds generated by inattention to these concerns are stiff, especially given the low credibility of governments to manage major transitions for the benefit of all. Uncertain Futures, laying out the issues clearly and providing direction for breaking the climate action logjam, is a must-read for all those at the forefront of advancing social equity while addressing the climate challenge.' Ernest J. Moniz, 13th US Secretary of Energy; Director, MIT-Harvard Roosevelt Project'Overcoming the political impasse on climate requires rethinking the way we do politics. Alexander Gazmararian and Dustin Tingley show us how: we need a climate politics from the ground up, one that listens to those whose lives will be upended by the transition to a green economy and offers a credible path to new jobs and strong communities. This pathbreaking book offers our best hope for overcoming the climate impasse.' Michael J. Sandel, author of Democracy's Discontent: A New Edition for Our Perilous Times'This compelling, well-documented, and stunningly insightful account of community-based opposition to green policies in the US begins and ends with respect for and consultation with the affected communities. Gazmararian and Tingley document widespread perceptions of governments' inability to make credible commitments, aggravating citizen uncertainties about the future. The authors go beyond diagnosis with detailed prescriptions designed to increase government transparency and trustworthiness - and make a green future possible.' Book SynopsisFully updated in its third edition, this undergraduate textbook combines the dual perspectives of international economics and international business in an accessible manner, exploring key principles of the world economy and the theory and practice of globalization through a uniquely integrated lens.Trade Review'International trade and international business are usually studied in separate worlds - one of nations, another of firms - in teaching and even in research. This textbook integrates the two, bringing a unified vision to benefit students in future careers, whether in business, government, international institutions, or academic research. The new edition is a welcome update for the fast-changing world.' Avinash K. Dixit, Princeton University'In an era when international trade and international business often remain segregated in both teaching and research, this book is refreshing and insightful. This third edition takes a major step forward, with new chapters on the nature of trade and foreign direct investment, global value chains, and the profound influence of crises on international enterprises. This expansion enriches the book, making it an indispensable resource for both students and instructors seeking a single, well-rounded textbook that adeptly combines international economics, encompassing trade and finance, with the complexities of international business, including multinational enterprises and cross-border investments.' Gaaitzen de Vries, University of Groningen'This is not just another introduction to international economics or international business. This book uniquely integrates these two fields of enquiry and is an extremely valuable resource for students in economics and business studies. This third edition makes a big step forward by offering a range of new insights and examples, focusing on the role of the international firm as a central actor in international trade, foreign direct investments, and global value chains, and paying more attention to the current backlash against globalisation.' Cambridge University Press Unequal Democracies

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisOffers an introduction to the latest research on political inequality and its relationship to economic inequalities in North America and Western Europe. Explores why economic inequality has risen in all affluent democracies, yet governments have done little to compensate low- and middle-income citizens.Trade Review'Why have advanced democracies so broadly failed to address the growth of economic inequality? This rich volume brings together a wide range of leading scholars to explore the roles of citizens, elites, government policymakers, and the mass media. This is a vital contribution at a time when many citizens are disillusioned with their governments and, perhaps, with democracy itself.' Martin Gilens, University of California, Los Angeles'Based on cutting-edge research by the leading experts in the field, this book tackles the important political puzzle: why did the redistributive efforts of many governments decline over recent decades even as income inequality increased? Its wide-ranging and illuminating essays will be of interest to everyone concerned about issues of inequality.' Peter A. Hall, Harvard University'Why don't democratic governments respond to what their citizens want? Unequal Democracies fills a massive lacuna in the literature with nuanced answers and sophisticated analyses of cross-national evidence. By distinguishing opinions, preferences, and interests and then considering how they are formed and represented by institutions, the authors transform our understanding of how to promote more equitable policies and polities.' Margaret Levi, Stanford University'This volume offers a set of crucial contributions to our understanding of the political consequences of rising inequality. The editors have put together a truly impressive group of scholars who provide state-of-the-art analysis of the political puzzles linking unequal economies to unequal democracies. A must-read for students of comparative politics.' David Rueda, University of OxfordTable of Contents1. The political puzzle of rising inequality Noam Lupu and Jonas Pontusson; Part I. Cambridge University Press In the Shadow of the Global North

    2 in stock

Book SynopsisIn the Shadow of the Global North unpacks the historical, cultural, and institutional forces that organize and circulate journalistic narratives in Africa to show that something complex is unfolding in the postcolonial context of global journalistic landscapes, especially the relationships between cosmopolitan and national journalistic fields. Departing from the typical discourse about journalistic depictions of Africa, j. Siguru Wahutu turns our focus to the underexplored journalistic representations created by African journalists reporting on African countries. In assessing news narratives and the social context within which journalists construct these narratives, Wahutu captures not only the marginalization of African narratives by African journalists but opens up an important conversation about what it means to be an African journalist, an African news organization, and African in the postcolony.

Book SynopsisStevens tells the untold story of the search for a moral foundation for capitalism through its leading characters. His historical account reveals the rich moral critique provided by these characters and describes how that moral critique was lost through the influence of the Chicago School and its emphasis on self-interest.Trade Review'If you want a perspective on an enlightened version, possibly the originally envisioned version, of capitalism not fully reduced to its characteristic, though commonly overemphasized and misrepresented, rationale of self-interest, then read this book. By unpacking and reexamining the moral foundations of capitalism, this book will make you reflect on how capitalist societies can serve mutual benefit and achieve social welfare when liberated from its misconceived, fundamentalist clichés of naked self-interest and free markets.' Wim A. Van der Stede, Dean and Professor at London School of Economics'In this excellent description of the development of intellectual ideas on the nature and determinants of our capitalist system, Douglas Stevens provides a wide-ranging, insightful, and accessible account of how we have arrived at the current dilemmas that confront us. His book provides a valuable basis for understanding how the history of economic thought can help guide the formulation of future policy.' Book SynopsisDog Economics provides an application of economic concepts to human-dog relationships that is accessible to a general audience with little, or even no, prior training in economics. People who keep dogs as well as scholars who do dog-related research will find that the book offers interesting new perspectives.Trade Review'An engaging book that innovatively applies economics to understanding human interactions with dogs. In a time when bridging species boundaries is critical for a deep appreciation of contemporary life, Dog Economics offers thought-provoking insights into government and business connections to animal policy issues, from canine healthcare to working dogs.' Jerry Mitchell, Professor of Public Policy, Baruch College, The City University of New York'Weimer and Vining illustrate the rich insights that economic theory can provide about our relationships with dogs. This approach does not lead them to promote an inhumane perspective that reduces dogs to expendable commodities. Instead, they illustrate how the application of economic theory can improve the lives of both humans and dogs, by helping us appreciate what dogs bring to the table and helping us design policies that could promote their wellbeing.' Stéphane Lavertu, Professor of Public Policy, John Glenn College of Public Affairs, The Ohio State University'Dog Economics provides a long overdue examination of the economics surrounding pet ownership. Weimer and Vining present what is by far the most comprehensive and insightful analysis into the economic aspects of every decision impacting the lives and well-being of dogs. • The Statistics Approach to Income Distribution

Cambridge University Press The Statistics Approach to Income Distribution

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThis Element presents the ?-generalized distribution, a statistical model tailored for the analysis of income distribution. Developed over years of collaborative, multidisciplinary research, it clarifies the statistical properties of the model, assesses its empirical validity and compares its effectiveness with other parametric models. It also presents formulas for calculating inequality indices within the ?-generalized framework, including the widely used Gini coefficient and the relatively lesser-known Zanardi index of Lorenz curve asymmetry. Through empirical illustrations, the Element criticizes the conventional application of the Gini index, pointing out its inadequacy in capturing the full spectrum of inequality characteristics. Instead, it advocates the adoption of the Zanardi index, accentuating its ability to capture the inherent heterogeneity and asymmetry in income distributions.

    Cambridge University Press Legacy

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisLegacy answers one of the most important questions faces us today. What would an economy look like if it were to be sustainable and hence leave the next generation with the capabilities to choose how to live their lives, having addressed the great environmental challenges of climate change and biodiversity loss?Trade Review'This is a powerful argument for valuing future generations which means saving and investing now so as to live sustainably.' David Willetts, President of the Resolution Foundation and author of The Pinch'This is a hugely important book from a powerful thinker and writer. We are living with crumbling infrastructures, decaying social fabrics, excessive pollution and mass biodiversity loss. Our economies are not sustainable. Sir Dieter's sharp observation is that 'what is not sustainable will not be sustained'. Legacy clearly and potently charts a course from dystopia to utopia. If you care about the fate of humanity, you should read this book and recommend it to others.' Cameron Hepburn, Smith School of Enterprise and the Environment, University of Oxford'Dieter Helm does not pull his punches in this forthright and powerful book. What is unsustainable can, he insists, not be sustained. To avoid disaster, we must transform how we live. Above all, we must all pay for the maintenance of core natural assets, instead of living well off their destruction. This will demand radical changes in how we live our lives, individually and collectively. Some will assert that the revolution he seeks is impossible. Helm counters that it is inescapable.' Martin Wolf, Financial Times'Helm of Oxford university puts forward a passionate case for moving to a sustainable economy based on the principle that each generation bequeaths a stock of capital - physical and, far more important, natural - as good as what it inherited. To make this approach operational, we should embrace the twin ideas of 'polluter pays' and the 'precautionary principle'. Helm argues that implementing such ideas requires a concept of citizenship. Unfortunately, the challenges of making this idea work globally are daunting.' Martin Wolf, Financial Times - Best Economics Books of 2023'A revolutionary work in several senses.' Edward Lucas, The TimesTable of Contents1. Introduction; 2. The next generation; 3. Taking precautions, building resilience; 4. The capitals; 5. Sustainable accounting and the balance sheet; 6. • ReUnderstanding Entrepreneurship

    Cambridge University Press ReUnderstanding Entrepreneurship

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisHow do entrepreneurs make decisions in the real world? Why are entrepreneurs absent from mainstream economics? What functions do entrepreneurs play in the market? What type of institutional environment is needed for entrepreneurship to play a role? Neoclassical economics is a market theory without entrepreneurship. This misconception distorts our understanding of how the real market works, leading to a theory of market failure that forms the common foundation of various government interventions. The market is not only an allocative process but, more importantly, a discovery and creative process. To understand the real market, Weiying Zhang argues that economics must shift from a price-centric to an entrepreneur-centric paradigm. Blending theory and narrative, Zhang intersects history with the present supporting his theory with relevant case studies. He argues that once entrepreneurship in the market is correctly understood, the foundation for government intervention is undermined and the economy can sustainably flourish.

  • Democracy in Trouble

Cambridge University Press Democracy in Trouble

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisThis Element investigates the process of executive aggrandizement to identify factors associated with democratic resilience. We focus on five democracies that showed resilience in the face of incumbent-led autocratization. To understand how these cases survived, we pair them with similar cases where incumbents successfully dismantled democracy from within. Through structured focused comparisons, our inductive exercise provides insights into how the process of executive aggrandizement unfolds. The case narratives reveal similar patterns, with incumbents often targeting the media, civil society, and judiciary and using shared tactics to weaken democratic institutions. Where democracies survived, anti-democratic incumbents made critical errors, including major policy blunders and miscalculations, which ultimately cost them their positions and allowed democracy to rebound. Where democracy broke down, incumbents were largely able to avoid or mitigate such errors, often through ethnopopulist appeals.

Book SynopsisHealthcare is inextricably bound to productivity, efficiency, and economic development. Although many methods for analyzing productivity and efficiency have been extensively covered, relatively little focus has been placed on how those methods can be applied to health care in a coherent and comprehensive manner. The Cambridge Handbook of Healthcare outlines current foundations and states of the art on which future research can build. It brings together experts in this growing field to cover three key sources and aspects of human welfare ? productivity, efficiency, and healthcare. Beginning with academic focused chapters, this book bridges and provides outreach to the practice and regulation of the health care industry and includes academic and regulatory perspectives, including overviews of major evidence from international empirical applications. Book SynopsisGerman industry had survived Allied bombing largely unscathed. Currency reform was necessary to provide incentives for capital owners and labor to produce. The abundance of old Reichsmarks had to be curtailed to a scarce supply of Deutschmarks that users would expect to retain value. It was Edward A. Tenenbaum, currency expert of US military government in Berlin since 1946, who managed the exceptionally successful currency reform in West Germany 1948, which was implemented by the legislative powers of the three Western Allies against opposition from West German financial experts. It was the foundation of West Germany''s ''economic miracle.'' The West German currency conversion is part of the founding myth of the Federal Republic of Germany. Yet Tenenbaum''s pivotal role is largely unknown among the German public. Besides providing a full-blown biography of the true father of the currency reform, this book elevates Tenenbaum to his proper place in German history.

Book SynopsisThis Element first sets the history of printing in Japan in its East Asian context, showing how developments in China, Korea and elsewhere had an impact upon Japan. It then undertakes a re-examination of printing in seventeenth-century Japan and in particular explores the reasons why Japanese printers abandoned typography less than fifty years after it was introduced. This is a question that has often been posed but never satisfactorily answered, but this Element takes a new approach, focusing on two popular medical texts that were first printed typographically and then xylographically. The argument presented here is that the glosses relied upon by Japanese readers could be much more easily be provided when printing xylographically: since from the early seventeenth century onwards printed books customarily included glosses for the convenience of readers, this was surely the reason for the abandonment of typography.

Book SynopsisThe global financial system is the economic bedrock of the contemporary liberal economic order. Contrary to other global-economy areas, finance is rarely analyzed in discussions on contestations of economic liberalism. However, a quite comprehensive process of external contestation of the global financial order (GFO) is underway. This contestation occurs through the rising share of emerging market economies within global finance in recent years, especially the rise of the BRICS economies. This Element investigates whether and how the BRICS contest the contemporary GFO by conducting a systematic empirical analysis across seven countries, eleven issues areas and three dimensions. This contestation occurs across issue areas but is mostly concentrated on the domestic and transnational dimension, not the international level on which much research focuses. Rather than the entire BRICS, it is especially China, Russia and India that contest liberal finance. This title is also available as Open Access on Cambridge Core.
