  • Digital Transformation: Organizational Challenges

Information Age Publishing Digital Transformation: Organizational Challenges

Book SynopsisWhereas digital transformation, considered from the standpoint of strategy, suggests a direct link with business benefits, questions linger about the implementation of digital technologies that often result in a lack of return on investment. Many consulting trends adopt a technology-centered approach, assuming that AI, IoT, data analytics, or robotics, would lead to business performance. Yet, most of the time, organizational factors are neglected, especially hidden costs or hidden work. Moreover, unexpected consequences are overlooked, such as resistance to change. Digital transformation is a practical problem for managers. Are IS implementation approaches such as agile methods to Socio-Technical Systems (STS) sufficient to tackle these issues? This book suggests starting from organizational transformation, in essence, independently from technology with methods such as Business Process Management (BPM), Socio-Economic Approaches to Management (SEAM) or Organizational Development (OD).Overall, whereas technology-centered approaches have been associated with numerous unintended consequences and failures with previous generations of technologies (e.g., ERP or KMS), process-centered and human-centered approaches may represent a less risky approach to digital transformation implementation. This volume focuses on evaluating the potential performance improvements and risks of digital transformation and ways to assess how technology may support work and organizational goals. Therefore, whereas written by both academics and practitioners, this book has been written for all managers in companies and institutions in order to help them achieve digital transformation success.

  • National Defense Budgeting and Financial

Information Age Publishing National Defense Budgeting and Financial

Book SynopsisBudgeting for national defense is a complex endeavor, particularly for a nation like the U.S. that assumes global responsibility and strives to have the most advanced and lethal force on earth. It is necessary – and challenging – to balance the myriad requirements between current and future readiness, across warfare areas and military services, between having state of the art capability with sufficient capacity, and among people, hardware, and the activities people do with that hardware. As analytically difficult as that problem is, it is embedded in the political budgeting processes and national security must be balanced with every other function of government and there must also be cooperation across branches of government. This text explores that complex endeavor. It takes the position that budgeting for defense is a particular instance of public budgeting which is a particular instance of public policy. Thus, this text starts with a conceptual, empirical, and process foundation before discussing the participants and processes that build the annual defense budget. It then covers the execution of that budget and the ultimate accounting.Compared to the first edition, this text is updated with current figures and examples. There is a new chapter on determinants of military spending in society and burden sharing within alliances. The chapter on budget execution has been disaggregated and a new chapter is devoted to fiscal law. The final chapter seeks to integrate all that came before it by discussing matters that integrate the stages of budgeting and which cross branches of government. Following in the tradition of the first edition, this is intended to be both a textbook for a course in budgeting, but also a desktop reference for defense budgeting practitioners.

Book SynopsisComprehensive and edited by leading names, this book takes a critical and discursive approach to the various forms and contexts of fundraising.Fundraising is a maturing profession, but one that is becoming increasingly controversial. Media reports of poor practice have contributed to concerns about the integrity of fundraisers and the uses which have been made of the resources they raise. As a result, a consensus now exists among senior figures in the industry about the changes that are required. Technique is no longer enough. Many more of the next generation of practitioners must be capable of considered reflection, organizational and inter-organizational strategic thinking and value-based leadership.Exploring new developments taking place in the area of fundraising, the specially commissioned articles, by experts in the field move the thinking in the profession beyond its familiar formulae and assumptions, opening up critical debate about the nature, contribution andTrade Review'One of the few genuinely thoughtful books on fundraising currently in print. This text moves beyond the simple 'how-to' and provides real insight into a variety of contemporary issues. Required reading for anyone serious about fundraising.' - Adrian Sargeant, Robert F Hartsook Professor of Fundraising, Indiana University, USA'With increased competition for raising funds and the impact of regulatory requirements there is a demand for both professionalism and management education that goes beyond simple how to do it guides. This book is timely in meeting this need providing an innovative, exploratory and critical dialogue on most areas of fundraising including self regulation.' - Professor Paul Palmer, Charities Course Director, Cass Business School'This book offers contributions from a range of leading authors in the fundraising field. There is no single view of fundraising, but its combination of work on different forms of fundraising, areas of fundraising research, and policy debates for the future will make it a key text for fundraising students.' - Dr Gareth G Morgan, Course Leader - MSc Charity Resource Management, Sheffield Hallam University'This book offers contributions from a range of leading authors in the fundraising field. • Taylor & Francis Ltd Performance Budgeting Reform

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisUsing theoretical frameworks to explore the political, organizational, and cultural dynamics of performance budgeting, this book examines the adoption of performance budgeting in a variety of countries, how it has been implemented, and why it succeeded or failed. Chapters include case studies from a wide range of continents and regions including the U.S., Africa, Asia, Australia, Europe, Latin America, and the Middle East. Each case study pays careful attention to the unique historical, political, and cultural contexts of reform and closely examines how performance informed the budgetary process. Chapters investigate theory-driven analysis, focusing on common themes related to international policy diffusion, organizational change, stakeholder politics and gaming, communication and information management, principalagent dynamics, and institutional constraints. Contributors include both scholars and seasoned practitioners with extensive experience in implementing orTrade Review"This book reinvents visions on ‘performance budgeting’(PB) in many ways. From its much broader scope of ‘performance-based budget management’, it connects six theoretical frames, it assesses real impact beyond financial management, and it shows real differences between high, middle, and low-income countries. This is a ‘high-impact’ book because reform policy makers will be convinced to see and use PB in a different way. Academics will adjust their research agendas to also include PB in explaining transformations of organizations, institutions, and politics."Geert Bouckaert, KU Leuven Public Governance Institute, and President of IIAS"With this book, Ho, De Jong, and Zhao have made a significant contribution to our understanding of performance budgeting. It is a welcome addition in particular because its cases plow new ground, with three times the number of chapters on low and middle-income countries as on wealthy ones. Further, it is not a book that will appeal to only a narrow audience. Academics, practitioners, and students—indeed, anyone who cares about effective government--will find much of interest in this book." Philip G. Joyce, University of Maryland, USA"This book contains important and well researched insights into the many practical challenges of linking the budget process to performance management in the government sector, as well as theoretical constructs that are helpful, for example in identifying the reform space for performance budgeting. It makes a convincing case that despite frustrations with the performance of performance budgeting itself the reform has staying power so the real question is how to do it. Unlike most previous research on the topic this book has a strong focus on experience in middle- and lower-income countries and should be of particular interest to those governments and to development agencies supporting performance budgeting reforms."Ivor Beazley, World Bank Group, Washington DCTable of ContentsList of figuresList of tablesList of contributorsSection I. 15 in stock

Book SynopsisAn overview of the role of institutions and organizations in the development of corporate finance from the Renaissance through contemporary Wall Street, this study puts forward a compelling argument for the closer integration of historical and quantitative research methodologies in financial theory.Trade Review'A History of Corporate Finance by Baskin and Miranti provides a panoramic account of the evolution of financial organizations and practices from ancient time through the present. It also compares these organizations and practices with the assumptions and conclusions of contemporary financial theories. It is must reading for both history buffs and for students, scholars, and practitioners of financial theory.' Harry Markowitz, 1990 Winner of the Nobel Prize in Economics'Business corporations, once rare, have become the dominant organization of the modern economy. The corporation as we know it owes its existence to a long history of financial innovations - in institutions, markets, and instruments (securities). This is the first in-depth history to tell us how it all happened, from the merchants and bankers of medieval and Renaissance Italy to today's corporate managers and wizards of Wall Street. Students of business, economics, finance, law, and history will learn much from it.' Richard Sylla, New York University'No serious student of corporate enterprise can afford to ignore [the book's] implications for how finance has shaped institutional development. If there were no more than one important lesson to be learned from this study (and there are many), it is this: financial structure matters.' George David Smith, Business History Review'An in-depth, panoramic study of corporate finance's history from the late Middle Ages to recent leveraged buyouts in a little over 300 pages seems rather extraordinary. This book is extraordinary.' Gerald P. Dwyer, Jr, The Journal of Economic History'… this is a well-informed work, describing a series of coherent financial systems which constitutes an adequate introduction to the subject, albeit a conceptually restricted one.'
