Shogam Publications Rime Buddhism without Prejudice
Book SynopsisThe Nineteenth Century Rimé (non-sectarian) movement played a major role in shaping modern Tibetan Buddhism. This book provides an overview of the movement, the major figures within it, its background context and why it has exerted such an enduring influence. The central figures in the Rimé movement opposed the solidification and political rivalries of the various Buddhist lineages and schools while encouraging the study and practice of them all. The movement played an important role in reviving marginalised traditions and saving others on the point of extinction. The majority of Tibetan lamas teaching in the West, including His Holiness the Fourteenth Dalai Lama, have been influenced by the Rimé movement, and a number of important present-day lineages are directly connected to it. An appreciation of this movement is therefore invaluable for understanding Tibetan Buddhism as it is currently practised.

Broadview Press Ltd Buddhism: A Philosophical Approach
Book SynopsisThis book philosophically introduces the basic truths, doctrines, and principles of Buddhism. Its goal is to explain the teachings of the Buddha and of Buddhism clearly and consistently. Though the book treads beyond the Buddha’s life, including into the Abhidharma and Mahayana traditions, it remains throughout a philosophical discussion and elaboration of the Buddha’s thought. It is meant to be an accessible guide for those who have no background in Buddhism, and to be beneficial to the philosophical understanding of those who do.Trade Review“Readers looking for a clear, concise, and accessible introduction to the basic tenets of Buddhism will find Panjvani’s book ideally suited to their needs. The book covers such quintessentially Buddhist notions as the Four Noble Truths, the No-Self view of personal identity, and the causal principle of Dependent Arising. One of the book’s main strengths is its systematic and meticulous use of examples drawn from both canonical and contemporary sources to illustrate the pragmatic aspects of Buddhist teachings. With just the right blend of doctrinal exposition and philosophical analysis, Buddhism: A Philosophical Approach offers general audiences a useful resource for engaging Buddhist ideas in a critical and effective way.” — Christian Coseru, College of Charleston“Buddhism: A Philosophical Approach is an excellent introduction to Buddhist philosophy. It includes a very lucid presentation not only of basic Buddhist teachings such as the Four Noble Truths and the Noble Eightfold Path, but also of such challenging concepts as emptiness and dependent origination. The work focuses on a general overview of fundamental issues, but also explores in some depth the complexities involved in crucial questions such as the nature of desire and the critique of self-identity. I highly recommend this work for introductory courses in Buddhist and Asian philosophy.” — John P. North Atlantic Books,U.S. Listening to the Heart: A Contemplative Journey
Book SynopsisA husband and wife share stories of struggle and triumph along the path of the Buddha, distilling his most essential teachings in this guide that is “luminous in clarity and depth” (Tara Brach, author of Radical Acceptance) Husband and wife Kittisaro and Thanissara take turns co-authoring chapters in this deeply personal dharma book exploring the inner practice of meditation in support of awakening. Within the context of the lives of the authors, both monastics in their youth, awakening unfolds as a multifaceted process following the archetypal journey of the hero(ine). Traveling from innocence to disillusionment through the fields of trials and despair that lead to maturity, and ultimately to inspiration and a blessed life, Listening to the Heart tells the story of two unconventional individuals who have together embraced spirituality as the keystone of their lives. At the heart of the book, through teachings on the nondual nature of reality, we enter the “intimacy with all things” as revealed in core Buddhist texts. Without ending at the goal of personal freedom, Thanissara and Kittisaro encourage us to go beyond the experience of inner peace to embodying wisdom in acts of service within the world. With a realistic appraisal of our current global crisis in which sustainability is threatened by catastrophic climate change, the authors encourage a preparedness that enables a mindful balance of equanimity and passionate engagement whatever the outcome of our global evolutionary journey. The guiding refuge for this journey is the Buddha, the historical teacher and—most profoundly—that immediate and direct pure awareness, which we all can access. The book also draws on teachings and stories of Buddhist masters who are fearless, funny, and challenging. Eventually, we are led into the Mary-like presence of the goddess of mercy, Kuan Yin who, as a great archetype within Buddhist cosmology, reveals the deepest mystery of our own hearts and our capacity for merciful and compassionate response. As the inner process of awakening unfolds, it transforms seekers and their lives, as modeled by the authors. It both heals the personal self in its journey through its wounds and shadows, and yet at the same time dissolves identification with the self. The book then ends by returning to the simplicity of the authors'' primary teacher, Ajahn Chah, with his encouragement to “Be the Dharma.”

Book SynopsisAn edifying view of Buddhism from one of today''s leading philosophers: a look at its history and foundational teachings, how it fits into modern society, and how it (and other world religions) will evolve. What might religion look like in the future? Our era of evolution in social consciousness and revolution in science, technology, and neuroscience has created difficulties for some practitioners of the world’s great spiritual traditions. Book SynopsisA shorter and less technical treatment of its subject than the author’s acclaimed Buddhism As Philosophy (second edition, Hackett, 2021), Mark Siderits's The Buddha’s Teachings As Philosophy explores three different systems of thought that arose from core claims of the Buddha. By detailing and critically examining key arguments made by the Buddha and developed by later Buddhist philosophers, Siderits investigates the Buddha's teachings as philosophy: a set of claims—in this case, claims about the nature of the world and our place in it—supported by rational argumentation and, here, developed with a variety of systematic results. The Buddha’s Teachings As Philosophy will be especially useful to students of philosophy, religious studies, and comparative religion—to anyone, in fact, encountering Buddhist philosophy for the first time.Trade Review"The philosopher Vasubandhu described the Buddha's teaching as an immaculate path of reasons. There are few who know every twist and turn of this path as well as Mark Siderits, and this book is the perfect guide for those starting out on their way."—Sonam Kachru, University of Virginia"This intriguing yet accessible text critically examines Buddhist perspectives on central issues in metaphysics, ethics, and soteriology. Sterling Publishers Pvt.Ltd Buddhist Remains of South India
Book SynopsisIt is generally believed that Buddhism came to South India in the thrid century BCE, during the time of Emperor Ashoka or little earlier. However, the prevelence of Buddhism in the Tamil region till 3rd-4th centuries CE is not attested by any material evidence. The reason may be that consistent with the pan-Indian usage, perishable materials like wood and brick had been used for the construction of secular as well as religious edifices of the earlier times. However, the discovery of a large number of stone sculptures and bronze images datable to 5th-6th centuries CE and onwards at various places all over Tanil Nadu indicate the wide prevalence of Buddhism in the area. A few stone and bronze images and some of the inscriptions indicate that Buddhism existed in certain pockets in Tamil Nadu till 16th-17th centuries CE. Notwithstanding the few books and articles which have been published on Tamil Nadu Buddhism, a majority of them hardly give an authentic detail in a comprehensive manner on this theme. Moreover, in some of the publications, there is much haziness in identificaiton of Buddhist sites and a few Jaina sculptures and even the icons of Hindu gods and saints have also been included in the list erroneously. The author has meticulously re-examined almost all the Buddhist vestiges in Tamil Nadu and his work on this systematic survey and scrutiny of the Buddhist sites.
