Elsevier Science Publishing Co Inc Plant Pathology
Book SynopsisOutlines how to recognize, treat, and prevent plant diseases. This work covers plant diseases such as abiotic, fungal, viral, bacterial, nematode and others. It includes information on molecular techniques and biological control in plant diseases. It also covers the genetics of resistance and management of these diseases.Trade Review"I have mentioned to numerous undergraduate and graduate students during the past two decades that plant pathologists are indeed fortunate to have the text Plant Pathology by George N. Agrios as an accessible, comprehensive reference on many aspects of phytopathology...The content of the fifth edition (922 pages) represents a significant expansion of content from the fourth edition (635 pages)...there are numerous new sections within individual chapters. Revised chapters contain significant expansion of text, figures, and photographs. A new feature of the book is shaded text boxes that contain brief articles of separate but related topics...Overall, the extensive use of color in the fifth edition readily accomplishes 'the author's dream to have all the figures in color' and is a welcome addition to this new edition...The comprehensive index to the text is very helpful as topics, pathogens, and diseases are all cross-indexed...Overall, the fifth edition is a welcome addition to the literature on plant pathology, and is highly recommended to anyone with an interest in this area of study." --G.J. Boland, University of Guelph, in AGRICULTURE, ECOSYSTEMS AND ENVIRONMENT "Plant Pathology by George Agrios is a comprehensive treatise for those within or coming into this field. The fifth edition is partially built on the compilations of the previous editions, however, like following Dorothy from the black and white of Kansas to the color land of Oz, the addition of color has dramatically enhanced the clarity of photos and diagrams. This change is important for correctly identifying the plant disease symptoms. The photos, diagrams and text can be understood by readers ranging from master gardeners to basic researchers. The book's past reputation as the plant pathology "bible" is definitely enhanced and the price remains reasonable...With this book as a text, no excuse remains for a poorly taught plant pathology course." --Lee Hadwiger for PLANT SCIENCE "This has become a very comprehensive book that every plant pathologist should have for reference. All students should be familiar with this book and it should be a part of their educational experience." --Patrick E. Lipps, Ohio State University "Agrios’ text is the standard introductory work for the discipline of plant pathology. There is no single volume which matches it for breadth of topics and detail of coverage." --Jeanne D. Mihail, University of Missouri Praise for the previous edition: "...a classic textbook embracing the whole of plant pathology, ideal for undergraduate courses and for those associated with research and practice of applied plant pathology in all climatic regions. The new, larger format and extensive use of high quality illustrations (including colour plates) and the widespread use of annotated flow diagrams to show pathogen life cycles, the gene-for-gene concept, forecasting of epidemics and procedures for isolation and culture of pathogens are all exceedingly well done. I recommend this book highly for teaching and reference." -- EXPERIMENTAL AGRICULTURETable of Contents1. GENERAL ASPECTS 2. PARASITISM AND DISEASE DEVELOPMENT 3. Oxford University Press Linnaeus Philosophia Botanica
Book SynopsisPhilosophia Botanica (The Science of Botany), by Carl Linnaeus, was originally published in Latin in Stockholm and Amsterdam in 1751. It is a greatly expanded revision of his Fundamenta Botanica (Foundations of Botany) of 1736, summarizing his work on the classification and taxonomy of plants while adding substantial new material. The book represents a critical stage in the evolution of binomial nomenclature, with a single word to describe the genus and another for the species. Special importance is attached to accurate description of the parts of plants, and to the correct use of technical terms. There are also explanations of the effects of soil and climatic conditions on plant growth. The book includes 10 original engravings, with 167 figures showing the shapes of leaves and other parts of the plant, and 6 short memoranda describing Linnaeus'' botanical excursions, detailing his ideas for garden and herbarium construction, and outlining what is required of a botanist and his pupils.Trade Review". . . . . Linnaeus's text of 1751, rendered into a flowing and eminently readable English" and "This book is beautifully produced and well-illustrated. Stephen Freer is to be congratulated on his translation which easily brings 18th century Latin to a modern readership." Dr Mark Newman, Edinburgh Journal of Botany, Dec/Jan. 2006"The translator's meticulous attention to detail and the publisher's lavish production cannot be praised too highly." The Naturalist, July 2006".. . . reading this excellent translation . . . Reviewers of the hardcopy edition have already heaped praise on Stephen Freer's skilful and meticulous translation. I can only add gratitude for providing easy access to one of Linnaeus's most important texts." (Prof. Pieter Baas, The Linnean, October 2006).Linnaeus's Philosophia Botanica is, among other things, a timely reminder of the importance of the classificatory enterprise and the need to continue it. * The Times Literary Supplement *The translator's meticulous attention to detail and the publisher's lavish production cannot be praised too highly. A valuable resource for taxonomists and of great interest to botanists in general and historians of science. * The Naturalist *"As translator, Freer is in a sense invisible in this work, and yet his hand is on every page, presenting Linnaeus' ideas and teachings to a new and wider audience . . . straightforward and very readable. This translation is an important contribution to science and its history . . ." Charlotte Tancin, Hunt Institute for Botanical Documentation, June 2006."Reading this excellent translation of the Philosophia Botanica, . . . historians, botanists and gardeners are among those who will find it fascinating" Jim Endersby, The Times Literary Supplement, March, 2006"We must be grateful to Stephen Freer and Oxford University Press for bringing us this excellent translation. I urge you not only to buy it but also to read it, because you will enjoy it." Alex S. George, Systematic Biology, Vol. 55, 2006Readers of a review commonly wish to know whether the work is worth buying. For this translation the answer is a resounding 'Yes!'. Systematic Biology, Vol. 55 (3):534-536, 2006All in all this is a delightful and informative translation of a botanical classic...Anyone interested in the history of botany and in teaching botany will enjoy and benefit from reading this book. Oxford University Press Limnoecology
Book SynopsisThis concise, readable introduction to limnology (the science of investigating the structure and function of inland waters), places the subject in the context of modern ecology. Unlike most ecological textbooks, which use examples taken almost exclusively from terrestrial systems, this book integrates the fields of limnology and ecology by presenting empirical data drawn entirely from freshwater ecosystems in order to advance ecological theories (limnoecology). This second edition builds upon the strengths of the first with the structure of the book following the same hierarchical concept of ecology, from habitat properties, individuals, populations, coupled populations and communities to ecosystems. However, it has been thoroughly revised throughout to incorporate findings from new technologies and methods (notably the rapid development of molecular genetic methods and stable isotope techniques) that have allowed a rapid and ongoing development of the field. There is a new emphasis on food webs, species diversity and ecosystem functioning, climate change, and conservation management. Key ecological questions are examined in the light of the latest experimental evidence. Throughout the text evolutionary theory is applied to an understanding of freshwater ecosystems, thereby filling a niche between traditional limnology and evolutionary ecology. This accessible text is suitable for both undergraduate and graduate students taking courses in limnology, freshwater ecology, and aquatic biology as well as the many professional limnologists, ecologists and conservation biologists requiring a concise but authoritative overview of the topicTrade ReviewThis is an excellent introduction to what is arguably Earth's most valuable resiurce. * The Quarterly Review of Biology *'I am unaware of any other textbook that explains basic ecological principles and evolutionary oriented, ecological thinking better that this one.' Journal of Plankton Research, Vol. 30. No. 4. pages 489-490 2008'...an excellent text that I would not hesitate to use for teaching courses in ecology and limnology...Lampert and Sommer's updated Limnoecology will make an excellent resource for students of aquatic ecology at all stages. I have often handed the first edition to my starting graduate students to read. Now I have an updated version that will be even more useful.' Volume 16 (4), December 2007Table of Contents1. (London Review of Books) "Steven Vogel capably demonstrates how a scientist can unite micro and macro perspectives in looking at the natural world.... His firsthand account of many of his own experiments, and the joy with which he recounts them, brings the scientific process to life." (Publishers Weekly) "Steven Vogel's obvious enthusiasm for the subject and his skill at writing shine through with clarity and joy."
