  • Embroidered Country Gardens: Create Beautiful

Search Press Ltd Embroidered Country Gardens: Create Beautiful

    3 in stock

Book SynopsisBe inspired to embroider all the elements of an idyllic English country garden. Suitable for beginners as well as accomplished embroiderers, Lorna Bateman’s beautiful book includes 12 practical projects for you to make and adorn with exquisite floral motifs. Lorna walks you through a variety of stitches including raised and textured stitches, teaching you to embroider individual flowers with them and how to incorporate these into an original garden motif. For the nature enthusiast, there is plenty to get excited about: an A–Z of English garden flowers and how to stitch them; a section on stitching common garden insects; and how to embroider iconic garden imagery such as birdbaths and garden ornaments. Roses are the archetypal cottage flower and Lorna describes how to incorporate a climbing rose, rose spray and standard rose in your designs. Embroidered Country Gardens is peppered throughout with seeds of wisdom: invaluable hints and tips from the author to help you develop your own skills and unique style. As well as step-by-step instructions, there are also detailed photographs, outline template drawings and a fully illustrated A–Z of stitches.Trade ReviewThis book is stunning! If you love traditional embroidery designs you'll love this. The projects are varied so there's something for every maker and Lorna Bateman guides you through each project making them simple to follow. I particularly love the fact that there's a section at the back showing you how to finish your work off. -- Lizzie Powell * Customer review *Even if you have never embroidered before you would be confident enough to pick up a needle and start after reading this book. It is probably best suited to beginners rather than more experienced stitchers as the author has gone into lots of detail on techniques such as backing your fabric and transferring designs. There are also detailed illustrations of different stitches as well as templates for 12 very pretty projects which will appeal to those who like their embroidery traditional. There are instructions to create many flowers from agapanthus to wisteria (especially love the hollyhocks and pansies) but also birds, insects, pots, tools and other "accessories". The idea is to give you enough confidence to design your own gardens. Projects range from a wall hanging to a scissor keeper and thread catcher. Practice blooms could easily be used for cards that will be treasured by family and friends. There are also embroidered buttons which would be a very special present for a knitter. Lorna Bateman has been a full-time embroidery teacher for 30 years. She has a business selling her designs in kit form at www.lornabatemanembroidery.com but this is her first book. -- Diane Chalmers * Customer review *I was delighted to receive this wonderful book of traditional embroidery. The instructions are so clear it’s brilliant for beginners of embroidery as well as experienced people like myself. There are a number of projects to complete along with patterns to get you started. I have already used several of the stitches to complete a task I have already started. Brilliant clear instructions to follow for all levels of embroiderers. -- Pauline Pritchard * Customer review *This book is a joy to read and use. Lots of information about different flowers, how and where they grow and how best to capture them in stitches. There're some lovely projects and detailed instructions on how to make and assemble them. It inspired me to create this piece of embroidery. It's a "go to" title for both experienced and novice stitches alike. -- Marion Dickins * Customer review *If you love floral garden embroidery, especially if you like stitching small motifs that have an exuberant garden feel to them, you're just going to love this book. Embroidered Country Gardens is a beautiful book, and it's a thorough book when it comes to instruction for this type of free-style surface embroidery. I didn't see any "cons" to the book. It'll make a beautiful, fun, and attainable addition to your embroidery library, whether for reference or for further project development. * Mary Corbet - Needle n Thread *This beautiful book was one of the most highly anticipated books here at Seashore Creative and it certainly lived up to expectations. What we love is the sheer volume of helpful information, particularly the detailed explanations of how to create each flower, plus the detail in the stitches, the patterns for tracing and templates. An absolutely stunning and gorgeous book! * Seashore Creative *Indulge your love of nature and gardens with this beautiful book on hand embroidery. You don’t have to be a keen gardener to appreciate these lovely designs featuring gardens at their best, flowers and the creatures that live there. This reminds me of the vintage embroidery transfers my mother had collected and with which I learned the craft as a child. There is even a crinoline lady in the garden amid the buttonhole hollyhocks and French knot delphiniums! But Ms Bateman has taken it farther than my old book showing basic freestyle stitches as she has introduced some stumpwork too as well as beads, covered washers, buttons, trapunto and needlelace. This is very much a 21st century embroidery book that takes the traditional idealized garden worked in freestyle stitches and mixes it up a bit; this really brings it all to life. Starting from the beginning you can discover how the author works and what tools and materials you need to obtain. There is advice on buying needles, storing threads and binding a hoop as well as a section with staged photographs showing how to cover buttons and washers, transfer designs, pad designs to make them raised and more. It is all very well explained with clear diagrams and explanatory text accompanying the many photographs. I like the way the best needle for each stitch is given, and there is even a section on perfecting those tricky bullion knots. Following this section is one giving an A-Z of garden flowers, showing the most commonly grown varieties in embroidery and explaining how they are worked. Roses get two whole pages all to themselves (most of the other flowers get a third of a page) and there are several different ways of working them using a variety of stitches. Also shown are things and creatures found in a garden that you might want to add, from archways to trugs, insects and birds together with that crinoline lady. Advice is given on how to design your own garden using very basic art materials like pens and coloured pencils. The rest of the book contains twelve projects showing how you can decorate all kinds of items using the author’s designs. In place of the usual cushions and cards are some items embroiders would enjoy making and using including an ort bag, scissor keeper, pincushion, needle case and sewing bag. My own favourite has to be the lovely clutch purse which doubles as a pencil case. Each project has a list of what you need, photograph of the item in situ and pattern/diagram. Instructions are text only in rather small print – perhaps it is as well that there are patterns for a glasses case and magnifying glass! Even a beginner can practice the stitches and techniques earlier in the book but the actual projects are aimed at intermediate level embroiderers who are also competent at making up items. Instructions for doing this are also given, again text only. This is a lovely book that certainly made me itch to start making that purse; one for the keeper shelf. If you cannot find a good range of embroidery and needlecraft materials locally try http://www.searchpress.com for a list of suppliers. -- Rachel A Hyde * MyShelf.com *I am very passionate about embroidery, I think the art of stitching fabulous designs lie in the ways of the teacher. Lorna Bateman both expertly explains and demonstrates the craft, and her 'pictures' come alive in this very, very beautiful book. The photography is stunning, and with the addition of templates, you will quickly be able to sew an amazing project. It will be easy to become a master of embroidery with just this one book. Embroidered Country Gardens lists all the tools you will need, it also gives you a comprehensive guide to needles.... if you thought there was only one kind think again!! The stitches are in A-Z order and what I loved was that each stitch is given a visual diagram, a hint and tip box and an easy to understand explanation. There are 12 projects, each one is perfect to practice your stitches and once again comes with specialist advice on getting a professional finish to your work. This is a must have book, inspired by nature it is quite divine. -- Tracy Shephard * Postcard Reviews *If you have ever been to one of Lorna Bateman's workshops then you will love this book. If you haven't then you are in for a treat. * SEW Region Magazine (June 2019) *Indulge your love of nature and gardens with this beautiful book on hand embroidery. Book SynopsisThis title is the IP Book Awards 2007 Gold Medal winner for Outstanding Book of the Year - Most Original Concept. Never before seen SEM images are unique to the book. It will appeal to scientists, artists and photographers alike. The extraordinary beauty and structure of pollen grains invisible to the naked eye. This book is the result of the shared fascination of an artist and a scientist with the perfect design of organisms too small to be seen without a microscope. Pollen is ubiquitous; its tiny forms have fascinated the scientifically curious since the seventeenth century. Its tiny grains are enclosed beyond the accessible beauty of the flower until the moment of release, when they are carried by wind, water or animal vectors to achieve their purpose, which is procreation. A clear explanation of the structure and form of pollen, the remarkable events from pollination to fertilization, and the many ways in which pollen impacts unseen on our lives is interwoven with a dazzling array of original images created especially for the book.

One of the first people to appreciate her work said about it, 'your work is not to hang upon a wall in a bright living room, but to put in a drawer in the study. Then, alone in the middle of the night, to take out and ponder upon.' In the best traditions of Wunderkammer, this book is an artfully arranged collection intended to be pondered upon. From the interactions of the objects within the paintings, to the quirky choice of subjects and the realism with which they are portrayed, they will bear revisiting again and again. As Asuka admits, painting is her language. She is an extremely adept communicator in it.

Book SynopsisRoses have a special place in both art and culture across the world. Published in Association with Kew Gardens, this stunning book teaches you how to capture their character, colour and form in watercolour, and showcases both historical images from the Kew archives and the author's own extensive collection of inspiring paintings. Guided by watercolour artist and rose enthusiast Trevor Waugh, this book begins with clear explanations of essential watercolour techniques followed by a short project that allows the reader to explore the nature of watercolour in a practical way. Particular emphasis is placed on mixing colours cleanly in order to reproduce the purity and variety of this much-loved family of flowers. This is followed by sections on how to gather reference material; how to compose your own paintings; and how to inject your paintings with colour and light. All are accompanied by three further step-by-step projects, each culminating in a stunning painting of your own. Trade ReviewI have just started painting roses and I found this beautiful book easy to follow. It is ideal for new and experienced watercolour painters. It has beautiful illustrations. I adore roses and am looking forward to painting my first one. -- Julie Jenkins-Jessup * Amazon *This book is well written and informative. Lots of background information on the history of the rose, inspiring the reader to visit the rose section of Kew gardens for further study of these amazing flowers. Clear concise instructions about how to go about painting your own interpretation of the rose/s. Beautiful illustrations. A book to cherish. -- Mal Jenner * Amazon *Rose enthusiast and artist, Trevor Waugh, has worked closely with Kew Gardens to showcase historical images from the Kew archives as well as his own extensive collection of paintings. Painting Roses in Watercolour will show you how to capture the form, character and, most importantly, colour of a whole variety of roses, with clear explanations of the colour mixes, techniques used and projects to work through along the way. Sections on gathering reference material, composition and adding light and colour to your work are each accompanied by 3 step-by-step projects. * Leisure Painter *A new book by Trevor Waugh is always welcome and one on roses, which are always popular, and of which he is himself an enthusiast, all the more so. Add in the authority that the Kew connection provides and this has always looked like a sure-fire winner from the first proposal. For all this, devoting a whole book to a single species is a calculated risk. Are there enough people who want to study the subject in sufficient depths, and what about those for whom general colour and shape of flowers are more important than specific type? If you're still on board, you'll be rewarded with the whole gamut of colour, variety and a series of flower portraits - rather than detailed botanical illustrations - that explore colour, shape, petals, leaves and stems. This is every inch a classic Trevor Waugh book that does full justice to a broad and fascinating subject. -- Henry Malt * The Artist *If you're planning to paint flowers it's pretty much a racing certainty that roses will be high on the list. One of the most popular species, they offer an enormous variety of shapes and colours and there's a wealth of historical precedent to draw on. This is not, it should be said, a book of botanical illustration, nor will you find tracts of information about varieties and their names, except in so far as they relate to colour and shape. This is a book about painting and about interpretation and, if that's what primarily interests you, feel free to offer a prayer of thanks! Trevor is well known as a flower painter and his originals, cards and prints are in as much demand as his courses and workshops. His style is loose and painterly and is as much about interpretation as representation. None of this means that the projects and exercises here aren't recognisable as roses, just that they convey the spirit of the flower as much as the precise look. Trevor's blooms shimmer and dance in the breeze as surely as if they were alive in front of you. While the results may be short on fine detail, the structure of the book and the instruction most certainly aren't. As well as colour and shape, Trevor demonstrates how to handle stems, leaves and petals, He'll explain how to use colour to define depth and give body and perspective to your work. In the full demonstrations, he'll show you how to build up a complex subject in carefully-chosen stages. This is a beautiful guide from an artist of consummate skill. -- Henry Malt * Paint *This is the second volume in this new series and it offers a perennially popular subject. I said of its predecessor on orchids that, while not perhaps the most obvious subject, those flowers nevertheless offered a wide variety of shape, form and colour. Well, the same is true of roses, but coupled with the fact that examples are available in just about every garden. Am I implying that this should have been the one that introduced the series? You know what, maybe I am. Now that we have two volumes under our belt, it’s possible to take a broader look and it’s pleasing to say that, despite the Kew connection, these books are not heading in a botanical direction. That, while impressive, would be a shame because very few people want (or, perhaps, are able) to work in such precise detail. This, therefore, is primarily a Trevor Waugh book. If you’re familiar with his work, you’ll know that it’s primarily about colour and the feel, the character of the flower and not the minute details of its petals and stamens. I can’t claim to have audited every page, but I do not believe that the word “calyx” appears anywhere, and hurrah for that. So, what you get are results that look and, above all, feel like roses. They have depth, both in terms of form and colour, they shimmer and, just maybe, if you catch them quickly, dance in the breeze. Simply, they’re a joy. This is, of course, primarily a book about painting, not about roses. The usual preliminaries deal with colour and brushwork, with some deceptively simple exercises you really shouldn’t skip. These teach you far more than just elementary skills, even if that’s what they look like. For the reset, there are three full step-by-step projects that cover not only the whole flower, but also leaves, stems and the play of light. There’s nothing specific about perspective, but it’s in there – Trevor is very good at disguising the technical stuff and you’ll have got through it before you even realise it’s happening. Is this perfect? Maybe. Is it too good to be true? Certainly not. -- Henry Malt * Artbookreview.net *The definitive guide to painting roses! Trevor is well known for his flower paintings and his interpretations capture not just the look of a bloom, but its character and essence. In this comprehensive volume, he demonstrated individual specimens and arrangements, where colour, light and shade play as much a part as shape and structure. There are exercises throughout that, as well as varying the pace of the work, also develop your skills with form, light and colourways. Each section concludes with a step-by-step project that brings everything together in a complete painting. This is an informative, but above all enjoyable, look at the bright, fascinating and beautiful world of roses. -- The SAA * The SAA Catalogue 19/20 *Learn how to create stunning paintings of roses in watercolour that capture the essential beauty of this much-loved flower. Book SynopsisA colourful, illustrated celebration of wild plants around the world, and why we should love them not loathe them, with 50 graphic illustrations by Paul Farrell. To call a plant a weed is doing it a real injustice. It’s simply a wild plant that is not deliberately cultivated, growing where it is not wanted. By this definition, virtually any plant outside a carefully tended garden is a weed. The intolerance of weeds is a mark of how we have turned our backs on nature and urbanized our land and lives. In this enlightening survey, illustrator Paul Farrell uncovers the wild beauty in weeds and explains the benefits of rewilding ourselves a little. Weeds can be medicine, food, and an important aid for wildlife. One person’s weed is another’s wild beauty. Paul’s brilliant modernist illustration style shows us dandelions, thistles and feverfew in a whole new light. Each of the 50 weeds featured is accompanied by a quirky history and its uses in medicine, cooking, arts and even industry. Sample contents:US/Canada weeds: Dandelion; Daisy; Groundsell; Chickweed; Nettle; Wild carrot; Sumac.UK/Europe weeds: Foxglove; Deadly nightshade; Yarrow; Rosebay willowherb; Herb Robert; Scarlet Pimpernel; Violet; Wood Sorrel; Red valerian; Common knapweed

    3 in stock

Book SynopsisHave you ever thought of citrus fruits as celestial bodies, angelically suspended in the sky? Perhaps not, but J. C. Volkamer (1644-1720) did-commissioning an extravagant and breathtaking series of large-sized copperplates representing citrons, lemons, and bitter oranges in surreal scenes of majesty and wonder. Ordering plants by post mostly from Italy, Germany, North Africa, and even the Cape of Good Hope, the Nuremberg merchant Volkamer was a devotee of the fragrant and exotic citrus at a time when such fruits were still largely unknown north of the Alps. His garden came to contain a wide variety of specimens, and he became so obsessed with the fruits that he commissioned a team of copperplate engravers to create 256 plates of 170 varieties of citrus fruits, many depicted life size, published in a two-volume work. The first volume appeared in 1708, with the impressively lengthy title The Nuremberg Hesperides, or: A detailed description of the noble fruits of the citron, lemon and bitter orange; how these may be correctly planted, cared for and propagated in that and neighboring regions. In both volumes, Volkamer draws on years of hands-on experience to present a far-reaching account of citrus fruits and how to tend them-from a meticulous walk-through of how to construct temporary orangeries, glasshouses, and hothouses for growing pineapples to commentary on each fruit variety, including its size, shape, color, scent, tree or shrub, leaves, and country of origin. In each plate, Volkamer pays tribute to the verdant landscapes of Northern Italy, his native Nuremberg, and other sites that captured his imagination. From Genovese sea views to the Schoenbrunn Palace, each locale is depicted in the same exceptional detail as the fruit that overhangs it. We witness branches heavy with grapefruits arching across a sun-bathed yard in Bologna and marvel at a huge pineapple plant sprouting from a South American town. The result is at once a fantastical line-up of botanical beauty and a highly poetic tour through the lush gardens and places where these fruits grew.Few colored sets of Volkamer's work are still in existence today. This publication draws on the two recently discovered hand-colored volumes in the city of Furth's municipal archive in Schloss Burgfarrnbach. The reprint also includes 56 newly discovered illustrations that Volkamer intended to present in a third volume.Trade Review"It was a longing for warmth and the Mediterranean which people craved, and Volkamer created exactly the stuff that dreams of this kind are made of." * Philographikon Gallery *

Book SynopsisCelebrating the magick of the natural realm, Volume IV of The Library of Esoterica, delves into the symbolism, ceremony, and our ritual relationships with the botanical world. A visual journey through our interdependent evolution with nature, Plant Magick celebrates botanicals as creative muse – from ancient Greek sculptures to Renaissance paintings to visionary art inspired by psychoactive plants, cacti, and mushrooms. Our myths, beliefs, and shared stories are continually reflected in nature; purity represented by the white lily or spiritual awakening by the bloom of the lotus. Our joys and laments are mirrored in the cycle of the seasons, in the seed birthing sprout, or in the dead leaf falling softly from winter branches. Plants, trees, and flowers as signifiers of transition are also deeply embedded within rites of passage rituals across global cultures. Rose petals strewn along the wedding aisle mark the evolution into womanhood and marriage. A wreath of lilies stands sentinel over an open grave. A lover’s bouquet awaits on the doorstep. The wooden May Day pole is circled by girls wearing crowns of woven daisies, celebrating the coming of spring. Birth, unions, and burials – cycles of joyful celebration and deep grieving, all are marked symbolically with herbs, flowers or branches of a tree – the integration of nature into ceremony our method of signifying catharsis. Since time immemorial, plants have also served as potent symbols within the religions of the world; Buddha attaining enlightenment under the Bodhi Tree, Eve plucking the Apple of Knowledge in the Garden of Eden. From root to vibrant blossom, Plant Magick explores the fertile, interconnected history between plants and people, the multitude of ways in which we embrace plants in spiritual ceremony, as healing medicine, as creative muse and as gateways into deeper explorations of consciousness.Trade Review“The clearest way into the Universe is through a forest wilderness.” * John Muir *
