Museum Rietberg, Switzerland Amarushataka Palm-Leaf Manuscript
Book SynopsisAround 1800, an anonymous engraver in Sharanakula, a small temple place on the southern coast of Orissa, illustrated a palm-leaf anthology of love poems. The one hundred Sanskrit quatrains, which are said to be the work of the 7th-century poet Amaru, describe the behaviour of enamoured couples, their longing for each other, the lovers' anxieties, their ecstatic joy as well as their doubts and sorrows. In India, these quatrains have at all times been cherished for their elegant language. Then, two hundred years ago, a great master-engraver visualised these verses in many small but meticulously executed and richly detailed illustrations. The erotic scenes in particular are of remarkable quality. While the verses are, without doubt, some of the greatest in the annals of Sanskrit literature, it is the illustrations of the work that have absorbed the authors here. The first part of the book is given to the poet and the poems, but then attention is turned to the intentions and acheivements of the painter. The authors attempt to follow his perception of the verses to comprehend how this Master visualised and rendered the refined Sanskrit verses into line drawings with such creative bearing and wit. 300 illustrations

Officina Libraria Girodet. Imitations d'Anacréon
Book SynopsisThe charming painter of Endymion's Sleep, Atala's Funeral and Chateaubriand's Portrait was also a poet. Thanks to his classical education, Girodet (1767-1824) was the author of free translations of ancient Greek and Latin poets. In 1808 he tried the to imitate and at the same time illustrate the Odes of Anacreon, whose edition was published posthumously. The Musée du Louvre holds the precious manuscript of this intense and complex work, in which the poetic research and graphic invention — compositions or vignettes — intertwine with the text. Only a facsimile could restore this organic whole in its integrity. This book reconstructs the history of the manuscript, the various stages of the project and the posthumous versions, and analyses the artist's aesthetic sources. Girodet's handwriting is sometimes difficult to decode, but the complete transcription allows the reader to appreciate all the refinements and to rediscover the charm of Anacreontic poetry. Text in French.Table of Contents Preface Introduction Material description and transcription Description of the album Folio by folio description and transcription Appendices Summary table of the odes translated and illustrated by Girodet List of artists, men and women, and women of letters cited in the text

Stockmans Art Books Please Look in the Basement
Book SynopsisPlease Look in the Basement is a quirky collection of posters of lost cats, dogs, birds and other pets, carefully curated from the collection of Maarten Inghels, Jan Lemaire, Jean-Michel Meyers, Denis Meyers and Nicolas Marichal from Antwerp, Brussels and Ghent. Fellow collector and writer Maarten Inghels took the posters as the starting point for conversations with the owners. Apart from the posters, this maverick collectible bundles whimsical anecdotes about loneliness and friendship in the big city. How do you find an escaped animal? Does a cat survive a fall from the fourth floor? And did the fortune-teller really see the location of the lost dog in her crystal ball? Please Look in the Basement is an ode to the bizarre occurrences of our four-legged friends and the doltish typography of homemade posters. Inghels tells the stories of pets who one day decide to go their own way.Text in English, French and Dutch.

The Chinese University Press Bringing Together China and the West: Books of
Book SynopsisOn the occasion of the sixtieth anniversary of The Chinese University of Hong Kong in 2023, the University Library organized an exhibition and complied this commemorative volume to record and contextualize its burgeoning collection of Western rare books about China. This splendid volume features books, maps, and manuscripts from the fifteenth to the early nineteenth centuries. Among its treasures are some of the very finest works of early Sinology. Many of these were written by celebrated Jesuit missionaries like Matteo Ricci and Johann Adam Schall von Bell, who almost single-handedly founded modern Sinology through their deep engagement with early modern Chinese society and culture. As the writings of these missionaries percolated back to Europe, knowledge about China grew exponentially as European books about China became more accurate and detailed. Through its extended introduction, images, and descriptions, this catalogue illustrates the dynamic early history of the West's longstanding and profound interest in China, thereby giving members of the university community and the public at large an opportunity to consider how we might better "combine tradition with modernity and bring together China and the West."

Academic Studies Press Too Much to Know: Managing Scholarly Information
Book SynopsisENG: The internet and digital technologies have generated a flood of texts and widespread worries about information overload. But this phenomenon is not unique to our age. Already centuries ago scholars complained about an overabundance of books, especially in the wake of the invention of printing in mid-15th century Europe. Blair studies the remedies that the learned devised to cope with that explosion of texts, notably by making summaries and excerpts which could be sorted and accessed in reference books. First she traces methods of information management back to antiquity and the middle ages and across cultures with long textual traditions such the Islamic and Chinese worlds. Then she focuses on the tools and practices in use in early modern Europe, such as note-taking, alphabetical indexing, thematic diagramming, and large scale compiling. The result combines intellectual history with book history to emphasize long continuities between past and present.RUS:
