Johns Hopkins University Press Poetic Modernism in the Culture of Mass Print

Book SynopsisHow scrapbooking, book collecting, and other ways of handling print media informed modernist poetry. In Poetic Modernism in the Culture of Mass Print, Bartholomew Brinkman argues that an emerging mass print culture conditioned the production, reception, and institutionalization of poetic modernism from the latter part of the nineteenth century through the middle of the twentieth centurywith lasting implications for the poetry and media landscape. Drawing upon extensive archival research in the United States and Britain, Brinkman demonstrates that a variety of print collecting practicesincluding the anthology, the periodical, the collage poem, volumes of selected and collected poems, and the modern poetry archivehelped structure key formal and institutional sites of poetic modernism. Brinkman focuses on the generative role of book collecting practices and the negotiation of print ephemera in scrapbooks. He also traces the evolution of the modern poetry archTrade ReviewAn indirect critique of New Criticism, Poetic Modernism will appeal to anyone interested in the intersection of modernism and cultural materialism. University of Massachusetts Press The Culture and Commerce of Texts: Scribal

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisLong after the establishment of printing in England, many writers and composers still prefered to publish their work through handwritten copies. Although censorship was one reason for this persistance of the older practice, scribal publication remained the norm for texts that were required only in small numbers, or whose authors wished to avoid the ""stigma"" of print. This text considers the trade in manuscripts as an important supplement to the trade in printed books and describes the agencies that met the need for rapid duplication of key texts.

By the late 1850s, almost all of these areas had been mapped and explored. Among the many iconic maps featured in this catalogue, which accompanied an exhibition at the Grolier Club, is Lewis and Clark's map of the Northwest. Getty Trust Publications The Colors of New World – Artists, Materials, and

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisThis is a penetrating glimpse into the first illustrated encyclopaedia of the New World. In August 1576, in the midst of an outbreak of the plague, the Spanish Franciscan friar Bernardino de Sahagun and 22 indigenous artists locked themselves inside the school of Santa Cruz de Tlaltelolco in Mexico City with a mission: to create the first illustrated encyclopedia in the New World. Today this twelve-volume manuscript is preserved in the Biblioteca Medicea Laurenziana in Florence and is widely known as the Florentine Codex. A monumental achievement, the Florentine Codex is the single most important artistic and historical document for studying the peoples and cultures of pre-Hispanic and colonial Central Mexico. It reflects both indigenous and Spanish traditions of writing and painting, including parallel columns of text in Spanish and Nahuatl and more than two thousand watercolour illustrations prepared in European and Aztec pictorial styles. This volume reveals the complex meanings inherent in the selection of the pigments used in the manuscript, offering a fascinating glimpse into a previously hidden symbolic language. Drawing on cutting edge approaches in art history, anthropology, and material sciences, the book sheds new light on one of the world's great manuscripts - and a pivotal moment in the early modern Americas.
