Books by William Shakespeare

William Shakespeare - Chandos Portrait (PD)
William Shakespeare's plays and poems shaped English culture and language more than any other writer. His work spans tragedy, comedy and timeless poetry.
From Hamlet to Macbeth, Shakespeare's insights into love, power and fate remain unmatched centuries later.
A great place to start with William Shakespeare is Romeo and Juliet, while a lesser-known gem worth discovering is Cymbeline.

Troilus and Cressida is a tragedy often labelled a problem play because of its apparent blend of genres and its difficult themes. 1 in stock

Book SynopsisThis volume includes the text of Twelfth Night as prepared and annotated by David Swain for The Broadview Anthology of British Literature, and is accompanied by the excellent introduction and supplementary materials from the anthology. The diverse and extensive appendices acquaint readers with Shakespeare’s sources and contextualize the play within Elizabethan society. The appendices include an excerpt from Barnabe Riche’s “Of Apollonius and Silla,” Shakespeare’s primary source of inspiration for the play; selections from Galen, Plato, and others illustrating Elizabethan attitudes toward gender and sexuality; excerptions illuminating contemporary moral discomfort with the theatre, such as Philip Stubbes’s “Of Stage-plays and Interludes, with their wickedness”; and pieces on music and duelling that illustrate cultural conventions important to the interpretation of Twelfth Night. This is one of several Broadview Anthology of British Literature Editions being released this year; those wishing to teach the text will have the option of including the convenient stand-alone book as part of a specially-priced shrink-wrapped package together with a volume of the anthology.Trade Review“Broadview’s recent Anthology of British Literature is an exciting achievement. Broadview has accomplished what no other anthology to date has been able to do.... Its introductory essays and useful appendices successfully reflect current scholarship while remaining student-centered.... With an impressive selection of literary works, an equally impressive collection of visual images, and an exemplary emphasis on print culture and history of the language, The Broadview Anthology not only rivals the Norton and the Longman, it sets a new standard by which all other anthologies of British literature will now have to be measured.” — Graham Hammill, University of Notre Dame on The Broadview Anthology of British Literature“The simple fact is that a major work of student-centered scholarship has arrived in the field of English studies, and The Broadview Anthology of British Literature is no mere pretender to the throne long held by the Norton: it is the new standard.” — Richard Nordquist, Armstrong Atlantic State University on The Broadview Anthology of British LiteratureTable of ContentsAcknowledgments IntroductionWilliam Shakespeare 1564–1616 Twelfth Night, or What You Will Twelfth Night, or What You Will In Context The Shakespearean Theater The Swan TheatreTitus Andronicus in PerformanceThe Plot of an Elizabethan PlayEarly Editions of Shakespeare’s Plays Twelfth Night Performance and Sources from John Manningham, Diary (2 February 1602)from Barnabe Riche, “Apollonius and Silla” Gender and Sexuality from Plato, The Symposium from Galen, De Usu Partium (On the Usefulness of the Parts of the Body)from Helkiah Crooke, Microcosmographia (London, 1615) from William Shakespeare, Sonnets: Sonnet 20 from Michel de Montaigne, “Of Friendship” Theater and Society from Philip Stubbes, “Of Stage-Plays and Interludes, with Their Wickedness” from William Rankins, A Mirror of Monsters (London, 1587) from William Gager, Letter to Dr. John Rainolds (written 1592)from King James I, The King’s Majesty’s Declaration to His Subjects Concerning Lawful Sports to Be Used (London, 1618, 1633) Music and the Passions from Thomas Wright, The Passions of the Mind in General (London, 1601) from Sir Thomas Wyatt, “Ah Robin,” manuscript (c. 1510–20) from William Shakespeare, King Lear 3.2.73–77 Dueling from Vincentio Saviolo, Vincentio Saviolo His Practice. Book SynopsisFrantic Assembly's electrifying take on Shakespeare's tragedy of paranoia, sex and murder, firmly rooted in a volatile twenty-first century. In a world of broken glass and shattered promises, of poisonous manipulation and explosive violence, Othello's passionate affair with Desdemona becomes the catalyst for jealousy, betrayal, revenge and the darkest intents. As relevant today as it ever was, Othello exposes the tension, fear and paranoia buried beneath the veneer of our relationships and how easily that can be maliciously exploited. Frantic Assembly's touring production was first performed in 2008, with revivals in 2014 and 2022. This edition of Scott Graham and Steven Hoggett's muscular, radically adapted text also features articles and interviews about the production and Frantic Assembly's revolutionary work.Trade Review'Frantic Assembly breathe new life into Shakespeare's tale... in Scott Graham's pulse-racing production' * Time Out *'A fierce reimagining of Shakespeare's tragedy' * The Times *'Pulsating... hurls Othello well and truly into our times' * Independent *'There is nothing polite about Frantic Assembly's Othello. Book SynopsisIn a period during which a play previously staged very traditionally was represented in a variety of original ways, Robert Smallwood looks at what we could call the 'Seven Ages of As You Like It' by considering just what directors, designers and actors did differently to make their vision original. How are the environments of the court and the Forest of Arden presented; bleak and chilling or welcoming and celebratory? What does each actress bring to the crucial role of Rosalind that will help show the journey from her relationship with Celia to that with Orlando? How are the anti-romantic Touchstone and Jaques portrayed? How successfully is Hymen, the god of marriage, brought to the stage? This engaging volume celebrates the rich performance history of an always popular play. Book SynopsisNeither comedy nor tragedy, The Winter’s Tale contains elements of each genre, and defies easy classification. It experiments, like many of Shakespeare’s late plays, with different styles and tones, and draws on a wide range of sources and inspirations. Full of mysteries and miracles, grief and dark humour, this strange play has fascinated critics and theatregoers for centuries.Theatrical and cinematic productions have tried to capture the range of interpretations and staging possibilities presented by The Winter’s Tale, and the introduction to this edition explores the play’s long histories in performance and in criticism. Illustrations and extended notes interleaved throughout the text discuss the echoes of religious, scientific, and mythological texts found in the play.Trade Review“This superb new edition of Shakespeare’s The Winter’s Tale is another excellent entry in the relatively new Broadview/Internet Shakespeare Editions series. Its virtues are many: a beautifully organized introduction; very fine glosses with extremely useful enlarged notes and illustrations; excellent sources; very useful analogues; and a superb bibliography. Book Synopsis''Here will be an old abusing of God''s patience and the King''s English.''The Merry Wives of Windsor is the only Shakespeare play named entirely after female characters and his only comedy set in England. These features underscore some of its most immediately appealing qualities -- its contemporary realism; its depiction of everyday life; its interest in status and gender; and the language and physicality of its comedy. This edition''s introduction focuses on these elements of Merry Wives, setting out their historical contexts but also thinking about what they offer audiences and readers today. It addresses the place of the play within Shakespeare''s career and canon and the enduringly popular figure of Falstaff, before thinking about its generic peculiarities as a mixture of city comedy and domestic comedy. The edition gives readers a rich breadth of historical context and real-life examples through which to understand and appreciate the text. It also addresses Merry Wives''s popular

Book SynopsisHamlet is Shakespeare’s most popular, and most puzzling, play. It follows the form of a “revenge tragedy,” in which the hero, Hamlet, seeks vengeance against his father’s murderer, his uncle Claudius, now the king of Denmark. Much of its fascination, however, lies in its uncertainties. Among them: What is the Ghost—Hamlet’s father demanding justice, a tempting demon, an angelic messenger? Does Hamlet go mad, or merely pretend to? Once he is sure that Claudius is a murderer, why does he not act? Was his mother, Gertrude, unfaithful to her husband or complicit in his murder? The authoritative edition of Hamlet from The Folger Shakespeare Library, the trusted and widely used Shakespeare series for students and general readers, includes: -Freshly edited text based on the best early printed version of the play -Newly revised explanatory notes conveniently placed on pages facing the text of the play -Scene-b

Book SynopsisJulius Caesar is a key link between Shakespeare’s histories and his tragedies. Unlike the Caesar drawn by Plutarch in a source text, Shakespeare’s Caesar is surprisingly modern: vulnerable and imperfect, a powerful man who does not always know himself. The open-ended structure of the play insists that revealing events will continue after the play ends, making the significance of the history we have just witnessed impossible to determine in the play itself.John D. Cox’s introduction discusses issues of genre, characterization, and rhetoric, while also providing a detailed history of criticism of the play. Appendices provide excerpts from important related works by Lucretius, Plutarch, and Montaigne.A collaboration between Broadview Press and the Internet Shakespeare Editions project at the University of Victoria, the editions developed for this series have been comprehensively annotated and draw on the authoritative texts newly edited for the ISE. This innovative series allows readers to access extensive and reliable online resources linked to the print edition.Trade Review“John Cox’s edition of Julius Caesar is very user-friendly—it has copious and concise explanatory notes, generous selections from Shakespeare’s sources, and a critical introduction that does a remarkable job of highlighting the main lines of interpreting the play over the centuries.” — Paul A. It tells the story of two 'star-crossed' lovers whose young lives are cruelly cut short because of a bitter feud between their families. Since it was published in 1597, Romeo and Juliet has been performed all round the world, made into box office recordbreaking films, ballets and adapted by Leonard Bernstein for his world-famous musical, West Side Story. Shakespeare was young when he wrote the play, and the exquisite language captures his sympathy for the lovers. This new edition includes the complete text with explanatory notes and a full introduction that describes the setting, summarises the plot and profiles the main characters. • Double Falsehood: Third Series

Bloomsbury Publishing PLC Double Falsehood: Third Series

Book SynopsisOn December 1727 an intriguing play called Double Falshood; Or, The Distrest Lovers was presented for production by Lewis Theobald, who had it published in January 1728 after a successful run at the TheatreRoyal, Drury Lane, London. The title page to the published version claims that the play was 'Written Originally by W.SHAKESPEARE'. Double Falsehood's plot is a version of the story of Cardenio found in Cervantes's Don Quixote (1605) as translated by Thomas Shelton, published in 1612 though in circulation earlier. Documentary records testify to the existence of a play, certainly performed in 1613, by John Fletcher and William Shakespeare, probably entitled The History of Cardenio and presumed to have been lost. The audience in 1727 would certainly have recognised stage situations and dramatic structures and patterns reminiscent of those in Shakespeare's canonical plays as well as many linguistic echoes. This intriguing complex textual and performance history is thoroughly explored and debated in this fully annotated edition, including the views of other major Shakespeare scholars. The illustrated introduction provides a comprehensive overview of the debates and opinions surrounding the play and the text is fully annotated with detailed commentary notes as in any Arden edition.Trade Review‘The publication of Theobald's adaptation in the Arden Shakespeare series is to be welcomed.' * Jonathan Bate, Daily Telegraph *‘For most of the three centuries since its debut, Double Falsehood; or, the Distrest Lovers has been ridiculed as a hoax or just disregarded. • Twelfth Night - The Student's Shakespeare: With

The Gresham Publishing Co. Ltd Twelfth Night - The Student's Shakespeare: With

Book SynopsisWilliam Shakespeare's Twelfth Night is a comedy. In medieval and Tudor times, the 'Twelfth Night' was the end of a winter festival that started on 31 October (All Hallows Eve, or as we know it today, Halloween). Mulled cider was drunk, and special pastries baked, and a king and queen (who could have been servants in charge for the night) ruled the festival until the clock struck midnight. People expected a topsy-turvy evening, with singing and clowning about, when the normal order of things was reversed, and the Lord of Misrule symbolised the world turning upside down. Shakespeare's Twelfth Night, with its rebellious gender jokes, crossdressing, practical jokes, daft costumes, moonstruck lovers and comic revenge would have been amusing for audiences. Today we study the play to understand the language and appreciate the play's entertaining nature, and we enjoy the farcical mixing- up of men and women, and the funny characters such as Malvolio. This new edition includes the complete text with explanatory notes, Shakespeare's language, and themes, and also explores typical exam themes and questions.Table of ContentsIncludes: Introduction The Story of Twelfth Night The Play's Characters Themes and Language Examining the Play The Play Notes throughout

Book Synopsis''I see a man''s life is a tedious one.''Set in Ancient Britain, Cymbeline is a play of deceit, disguise, banishment, and fidelity against the backdrop of a Roman invasion. When the King of Britain Cymbeline discovers his daughter''s secret marriage, he banishes her husband to Rome, who then accuses Innogen of being unfaithful. Innogen must evade deadly plots and homicidal jealousy to restore her name. Long recognised as a response to James VI and I''s project to unite England and Scotland, the play conjures ancient British history at a moment when that history was eroding, revealed as a medieval invention. Book SynopsisHenry V, the climax of Shakespeare''s sequence of English history plays, is an inspiring, often comic celebration of a young warrior-king. But it is also a study of the costly exhilarations of war, and of the penalties as well as the glories of human greatness.Introducing this brilliantly innovative edition, Gary Taylor shows how Shakespeare shaped his historical material, examines controversial critical interpretations, discusses the play''s fluctuating fortunes in performance, and analyses the range and variety of Shakespeare''s characterization.
