Book SynopsisWilde's works are suffused with his aestheticism, brilliant craftsmanship, legendary wit and, ultimately, his tragic muse. He wrote tender fairy stories for children employing all his grace, artistry and wit, of which the best-known is The Happy Prince. Counterpoints to this were his novel The Picture of Dorian Gray, which shocked and outraged many readers of his day, and his stories for adults which exhibited his fascination with the relations between serene art and decadent life. Wilde took London by storm with his plays, particularly his masterpiece The Importance of Being Earnest. His essays in particular De Profundis and his Ballad of Reading Gaol, both written after his release from prison, strikingly break the bounds of his usual expressive range. His other essays and poems are all included in this comprehensive collection of the works of one of the most exciting writers of the late nineteenth century. Our Library Collection hardback series has been completely redesigned, for launch in November 2024. The books are now finished in black, soft-touch linen, cloth bound with metallic gold and matt coloured foil blocking. They come complete with co-ordinated head and tail bands, a silk ribbon marker and coloured spray edges. The pages are sewn, and the end papers are in two colours featuring an exclusive design by Holly Dunn.

Book SynopsisWhen the Americans Mr and Mrs Otis and their four children move into Canterville Chase, its previous occupant Lord Canterville warns them that the ghost of his ancestor still haunts the house. Their disbelief is soon shattered by the nightly sound of rattling chains in the hallways and the appearance of mysterious bloodstains in the living room. However, the ghost struggles to intimidate his new victims, as they counter his ghoulish behaviour with typically transatlantic pragmatism, offering lubricator for his chains and cleaning up the stains with detergent. As the spirit is deserted by his capacity to scare, Virginia, the Otises’ daughter, gets to know him and learns the tragic tale behind his sad fate. Sparkling with his trademark wit, this classic tale is one of Oscar Wilde’s finest stories and is presented here with three other comic mystery stories, ‘Lord Arthur Savile’s Crime’, ‘The Sphinx without a Secret’ and ‘The Model Millionaire’, all of which were first published together in 1891.Table of ContentsThe Canterville GhostLord Arthur Savile's CrimeThe Sphinx Without a SecretThe Model Millionaire

Influenced by his friend Lord Henry Wotton, he is drawn into a corrupt double life; indulging his desires in secret while remaining a gentleman in the eyes of polite society. Only his portrait bears the traces of his decadence. The novel was a succès de scandale and the book was later used as evidence against Wilde at the Old Bailey in 1895. Everyman The Happy Prince And Other Tales

Book SynopsisThe five original fairy tales included in this volume were first published by Davis Nutt in 1888. Although it is said that Wilde wrote them for his two young sons, the author himself claimed they were '. . . . not for children, but for childlike people from eighteen to eighty'. Since then the stories have been constantly reprinted and, despite the author's disclaimer, children have made the tales their own, a particular favourite being 'The Selfish Giant' - the highly moral story of the giant who banished children from his garden, so that spring never came. Charles Robinson, who produced the illustrations for a special edition first published in 1913, brought to the book a feeliong for its innate sadness that exactly fits the poetry of Wilde's text.

Book Synopsis`Yet each man kills the thing he loves, By each let this be heard, Some do it with a bitter look, Some with a flattering word, The coward does it with a kiss, The brave man with a sword!'' A powerful poem of universal guilt and a protest against capital punishment, The Ballad of Reading Gaol is Wilde''s best-known poem, yet it is quite unlike the rest of his poetry. At Oxford Wilde discarded the passion and politics of his mother''s Irish nationalistic anti-famine poetry and opted to follow an English Romantic tradition, paying tribute to Keats, Swinburne, and the Pre-Raphaelites. Admiration of French masters gradually led to his writing Impressionist, even decadent poems and his collection Poems (1881) brought accusations of obscenity and plagiarism as well as scathing reviews. Unabashed, Wilde revised and reprinted his final `Author''s Edition'' in 1892, by which time he was the successful author of fiction, criticism, and Lady Windermere''s Fan. This volume follows as closely as possible the chronological order of composition, highlighting autobiographical elements including the young Wilde''s conflicting attitudes to Greece and Rome, pagan and Christian, and his fluctuating attraction to Roman Catholicism. The Appendix shows Wilde''s original ordering, constructed with great care around a `musical'' arrangement of themes. The poems reveal unexpected aspects of a literary chameleon usually identified with sparkling wit and social comedy. • Wilde O Salome

Dover Publications Inc. Wilde O Salome

    1 in stock

Book Synopsis Few works in English literature have so peculiar a history as Oscar Wilde''s play Salome. Written originally in French in 1892 and ridiculed on its publication, translated into English by Lord Alfred Douglas (Bosie himself) and again heaped with scorn, it has survived for 75 years, served as the text (in abridged form) for Richard Strauss'' world-famous opera, and emerged as an acknowledged masterwork of the Aesthetic movement of fin de siècle England. The illustrations that Aubrey Beardsley prepared for the first English edition have no less strange a story. Beardsley liked neither the play nor its author. Yet, it inspired some of his finest work. It is an open question as to how suited the drawings actually are to the text that Wilde wrote. Yet, the two, the play and the Beardsley illustrations, have nevertheless become so identified with each other as to be inseparable. This edition reprints the first edition (1894) text, with A Note on ''Salome'' by Robert Ross. The Beardsley drawings it superbly reproduces (mostly from a rare early portfolio) include not only the 10 full-page illustrations, the front and back cover designs, the title and List of Illustrations page decorations, and the cul de lampe from the original edition, but also three drawings that were not used, an alternate cover sketch, and the drawing entitled J''ai baisé ta bouche, Iokanaan, which Beardsley did earlier for The Studio. Furthermore, all of the illustrations are reproduced in their original state, not as expurgated in the first and most subsequent editions.

Book SynopsisOscar Wilde presents a libertarian socialist view of the economic disparities caused by capitalism, that lead to futile acts of charity instead of definitive solutions. Wilde encourages an overhaul of the structures that allow such inequalities to exist. The Soul of Man Under Socialism is an insightful look into Wilde’s personal and political beliefs. Within the essay he emphasizes individualism over group think, using Jesus Christ as a prime example. He also offers a detailed critique of capitalist societies that revel in charity, instead of eliminating its need. Poverty cannot be fought with kindness; it requires genuine compassion backed by policy. Wilde’s perspective was heavily influenced by the writings of Peter Kropotkin, a Russian anarchist and socialist. In The Soul of Man Under Socialism, Wilde invokes powerful ideas that call for accountability and drastic change. It’s a raw declaration of his contemporary anarchist views. With an eye-catching new cover, and professionally typeset manuscript, this edition of The Soul of Man Under Socialism is both modern and readable.

You'll delight at the witty banter, well-crafted jokes and insults at the expense of the upper classes and the ridiculousness of human behavior that have helped make The Importance of Being Earnest, Wilde's most enduringly popular play.A mainstay of high school curriculum for decades this extremely clever and undeniably silly story about eccentric characters is a powerful social satire and criticism of Victorian high society's shallowness and materialism.
