Book Synopsis I have the simplest tastes, remarked Oscar Wilde. I am always satisfied with the best. In this superlative collection of quotations by the great Irish playwright and wit, readers will find the very best of Wilde''s scintillating comments on art, human nature, morals, society, politics, history, and numerous other subjects. Epigrams, aphorisms, and other bon mots gleaned from Wilde''s enduringly popular plays, essays, and conversation offer amusing, thought-provoking observations that resonate with truth and profundity beneath their comic surface. Widely acknowledged as the most brilliant talker of his age, Wilde once explained to André Gide, I put all my genius into my life; I put only my talent into my works. This fine collection of nearly 400 quotes, organized by category, contains quotations from both his works and his conversation, including gems from his personal life with which even devotees may be unfamiliar. Book SynopsisThe crowning plays of one of Ireland's most heralded artistsOscar Wilde was at once a family man and a homosexual outsider, a socialite, socialist, and Irish nationalist. Book SynopsisThis poem - originally published anonymously, written after Wilde''s two year''s hard labour in Reading prison - is the tale of a man who has been sentenced to hang for the murder of the woman he loved. The Ballad of Reading Gaol follows the inmate through his final three weeks, as he stares at the sky and silently drinks his beer ration. Heart-wrenching and eye-opening, the ballad also expresses perfectly Wilde''s belief that humanity is made up only of offenders, each of us deserving a greater charity for the severity of our crimes.

Book SynopsisThe complete short stories of the masterful Irish writerFairy tales, ghost stories, detective fiction and comedies of manners—the stories collected in this volume made Oscar Wilde's name as a writer of fiction, showing breathtaking dexterity in a wide range of literary styles. Victorian moral justice is comically inverted in Lord Arthur Savile's Crime and The Canterville Ghost, and society's materialism comes under sharp, humorous criticism in The Model Millionaire, while The Happy Prince and The Nightingale and the Rose are hauntingly melancholic in their magical evocations of selfless love. These small masterpieces convey the brilliance of Wilde's vision, exploring complex moral issues through an elegant juxtaposition of wit and sentiment. For more than seventy years, Penguin has been the leading publisher of classic literature in the English-speaking world. Book Synopsis`Yet each man kills the thing he loves, By each let this be heard, Some do it with a bitter look, Some with a flattering word, The coward does it with a kiss, The brave man with a sword!'' A powerful poem of universal guilt and a protest against capital punishment, The Ballad of Reading Gaol is Wilde''s best-known poem, yet it is quite unlike the rest of his poetry. At Oxford Wilde discarded the passion and politics of his mother''s Irish nationalistic anti-famine poetry and opted to follow an English Romantic tradition, paying tribute to Keats, Swinburne, and the Pre-Raphaelites. Admiration of French masters gradually led to his writing Impressionist, even decadent poems and his collection Poems (1881) brought accusations of obscenity and plagiarism as well as scathing reviews. Unabashed, Wilde revised and reprinted his final `Author''s Edition'' in 1892, by which time he was the successful author of fiction, criticism, and Lady Windermere''s Fan. This volume follows as closely as possible the chronological order of composition, highlighting autobiographical elements including the young Wilde''s conflicting attitudes to Greece and Rome, pagan and Christian, and his fluctuating attraction to Roman Catholicism. The Appendix shows Wilde''s original ordering, constructed with great care around a `musical'' arrangement of themes. The poems reveal unexpected aspects of a literary chameleon usually identified with sparkling wit and social comedy. Book SynopsisThis Vintage edition of The Plays of Oscar Wilde contains the plays that made Wilde one of the most important dramatists of his time, including The Importance of Being Earnest, one of the great works of modern literature.Oscar Wilde's plays demonstrate once again why their author must be seen as both an inaugurator and a master of modernism. In his best work, the subversive insights embedded in his wit continue to challenge our common assumptions. Wilde's ability to unsettle and startle us anew with his radical vision of the artifice inherent in the self's construction makes him our contemporary. This edition is introduced by John Lahr, author of Prick Up Your Ears: The Biography of Joe Orton. The plays included are Lady Windermere's Fan, Salome, A Woman of No Importance, An Ideal Husband, and The Importance of Being Earnest.

  • Wilde O Salome

Dover Publications Inc. Wilde O Salome

Book Synopsis Few works in English literature have so peculiar a history as Oscar Wilde''s play Salome. Written originally in French in 1892 and ridiculed on its publication, translated into English by Lord Alfred Douglas (Bosie himself) and again heaped with scorn, it has survived for 75 years, served as the text (in abridged form) for Richard Strauss'' world-famous opera, and emerged as an acknowledged masterwork of the Aesthetic movement of fin de siècle England. The illustrations that Aubrey Beardsley prepared for the first English edition have no less strange a story. Beardsley liked neither the play nor its author. Yet, it inspired some of his finest work. It is an open question as to how suited the drawings actually are to the text that Wilde wrote. Yet, the two, the play and the Beardsley illustrations, have nevertheless become so identified with each other as to be inseparable. This edition reprints the first edition (1894) text, with A Note on ''Salome'' by Robert Ross. The Beardsley drawings it superbly reproduces (mostly from a rare early portfolio) include not only the 10 full-page illustrations, the front and back cover designs, the title and List of Illustrations page decorations, and the cul de lampe from the original edition, but also three drawings that were not used, an alternate cover sketch, and the drawing entitled J''ai baisé ta bouche, Iokanaan, which Beardsley did earlier for The Studio. Furthermore, all of the illustrations are reproduced in their original state, not as expurgated in the first and most subsequent editions.
