Portrait of Mary Shelley

Mary Shelley, a pioneering voice of the Romantic era, is best known for her groundbreaking novel Frankenstein, first published in 1818. Combining Gothic intensity with philosophical depth, her work explores the boundaries of creation, responsibility, and humanity's pursuit of knowledge. • Proserpine and Midas

Graphic Arts Books Proserpine and Midas

Book SynopsisProserpine and Midas (1820) is a collection of plays by Mary Shelley and Percy Bysshe Shelley. Combining Mary’s blank verse and Percy’s lyric poems, the Shelleys offer two groundbreaking retellings of classical myth. Together, the plays illuminate the working relationship of a husband and wife who helped define Romanticism, highlighting their individual talents in the process. While Proserpine was published in 1832 in The Winter’s Wreath, a London periodical, Mary Shelley was unable to find a publisher for Midas, which remained unprinted until the twentieth century. Ceres, the goddess of agriculture, leaves her daughter Proserpine in the care of two trusted nymphs. While the women are out picking flowers, Proserpine is kidnapped by Pluto, the dreaded lord of the underworld. Distraught, Ceres laments the loss of her beloved girl and appeals to Jove for assistance. Proserpine is a retelling of an ancient myth which remains mostly faithful to its source while emphasizing the feminist qualities of its tragic content. In Midas, the wild god Pan is defeated in a musical competition by Apollo, god of the sun. Determined to claim victory, he arranges a new contest with King Midas as judge. Although his power on earth is unmatched by any human, Midas soon learns that to play at divinity one risks reaping the greatest of sorrows. Proserpine and Midas is a masterful take on two of ancient Greece’s central myths. Using their talents for narrative and song, the Shelleys adapt these well-known stories for the nineteenth century and beyond, showcasing their sociopolitical significance in a world defined by the democratic ideals of the Greeks. With a beautifully designed cover and professionally typeset manuscript, this edition of Mary Shelley and Percy Bysshe Shelley’s Proserpine and Midas is a classic of English literature reimagined for modern readers.

Book SynopsisBeset by jealousy over an admirer of his wife's, Lord Lodore has come with his daughter Ethel to the American wilderness; his wife Cornelia, meanwhile, has remained with her controlling mother in England. When he finally brings himself to attempt a return, Lodore is killed en route in a duel. Ethel does return to England, and the rest of the book tells the story of her marriage to the troubled and impoverished Villiers (whom she stands by through a variety of tribulations) and her long journey to a reconciliation with her mother.Lodore's scope of character and of idea is matched by its narrative range and variety of setting; the novel's highly dramatic story-line moves at different points to Italy, to Illinois, and to Niagara Falls. And in this edition, which includes a wealth of documents from the period, the reader is provided with a sense of the full context out of which Shelley's achievement emerged.Trade Review“Not the one book author that Frankenstein sometimes make her seem, Mary Shelley was a complex and committed social thinker whose novels reveal her deep concern with the impact of the emerging Victorian social dynamic upon the lives of women. While Lodore reflects Shelley's conviction of the importance to the new bourgeois family model of the ‘genuine affections of the human heart,' it shows us too, in the person of the remarkable Fanny Derham, the consequences for a free-thinking and independent woman who has learned ‘to be afraid of nothing.' Vargo's splendid edition resituates Shelley within the 1830s milieu of successful literary women like Landon and Hemans who understood their readers and their marked, and within a culture that was moving rapidly away from the exuberant Romanticism of only two decades earlier. With its illuminating critical introduction, and its extensive contextualizing appendices, this exceptional edition will alert readers anew to the complexity and sophistication of Shelley's mind and art.” - Stephen C. Set in 14th-century Italy, it represents a merging of historical romance and the literature of sentiment. Book Synopsis"In this new edition of Mary Shelley's Frankenstein, David Wootton's Introduction gives the reader both a clear and gripping account of the biographical circumstances that led to the novel’s writing and the most striking and original interpretations of its central themes and of the intellectual and cultural influences on them. Offering a new account of the complex history of its composition, and drawing upon his deep knowledge of eighteenth- and nineteenth-century scientific debates, Wootton reveals the ways in which the origins of Shelley’s novel are inextricably linked to conceptions of the origins of life itself. We have here a transformative reading of one of the world’s best-known stories."—Laura Marcus, Goldsmiths’ Professor of English Literature and Fellow of New College, University of OxfordTrade Review"A superb edition of Shelley's troubling masterpiece, with lucid explanatory notes and rich contextual material on the biographical, cultural, and scientific background to the text. Wootton’s Introduction is a tour de force of revisionist scholarship, and his bold new arguments about Frankenstein's reworking of Promethean myth, its engagement with Romantic-era science, and the sources and significance of its arctic frame-tale will set the agenda for future debate." —Thomas Keymer, Chancellor Henry N. R. Jackman University Professor of English, University of Toronto"David Wootton, the editor of a splendid new edition of Frankenstein that includes a rich variety of relevant texts, prefers to focus on the contribution made to the novel by Mary's reading of contemporary articles on travel (the book’s first narrator, Robert Walton, is bound for the North Pole, which he describes as 'the favourite dream of my early years'). Wootton’s magisterial introduction grants equal significance to the earnest discussions about generating life that took place in 1816 at Lord Byron’s lakeside villa in Switzerland, where Frankenstein was conceived." —Miranda Seymour, in The New York Review of Books"Wootton’s new edition presents Shelley's Frankenstein in a vivid new light. Informed by his immense erudition in the histories of both science and political thought, his brilliantly lucid Introduction pieces together the book’s complex and sometimes conflicting elements, and proposes several new interpretations. Generously annotated throughout, and with a judicious selection of related writings and contemporary reviews, this will be the go-to text for all students of the novel." —Seamus Perry, Professor of English Literature and Fellow of Balliol College, University of Oxford

Book SynopsisConceived by Mary Shelley (wife of the famous poet Percy Shelley) on the banks of Lake Geneva in 1816, Frankenstein is today regarded as a classic piece of 19th century literature. The book includes an illustrated Character List (like a Dramatis Personae), 124 pages of story artwork, and fascinating support material that details the remarkable and tragic life of Mary Shelley - all beautifully presented in color.Designed to encourage readers to enjoy classical literature, titles in the Classical Comics range stay true to the original vision of the authors. This title has been moderately and sympathetically abridged from the original text to fit within the graphic novel format. Despite that, all of the events of the book are represented, and all the captions and dialogue is taken from teh Shelley original prose novel. The story begins with the journey of an adventurer, Robert Walton, who stumbles across a man in trouble at the North Pole, saving his life. That man is Victor Frankenstein, who tells Walton all about his experiments with the creation of life and how he came to be at the North Pole in the first place.Through this plot structure, Mary Shelley was able to deal with serious real-world issues, such as the need for acceptance, tolerance, and understanding despite differences, as well as the need for companionship and love among our basic human needs. The novel was of course, the inspiration and basis for the classic Boris Karloff movies, and more recently, the Frankenstein novels by Dean Koontz – however this Classical Comics publication, like all of their titles, remains true to the original novel.Frankenstein is one of Classical Comics best selling titles, and now this edition presents it into a library binding. To support the use of this title in the classroom, photocopiable teachers resources are available that offer lesson plans and activities from 6th grade and up: ISBN 978-1-906332-56-3
