Portrait of Mark Twain

Mark Twain, the pen name of Samuel Langhorne Clemens, remains one of America's most distinctive literary voices. His sharp wit, keen observation of human nature, and gift for storytelling created works that continue to captivate readers across generations. Twain's writing blends humour and realism, capturing both the charm and contradictions of life along the Mississippi and beyond.

From timeless adventures to incisive social commentary, Twain's books reveal a world of restless curiosity and moral questioning. His characters, often young dreamers or wry observers, navigate a landscape of discovery and self‑reflection that feels as relevant today as when first written. A cornerstone of classic literature, Twain's work endures for its honesty, warmth and unmistakable voice.

Book SynopsisMark Twain's letters for 1874 and 1875 encompass one of his most productive and rewarding periods as author, husband and father, and man of property. This is sixth volume contains 348 of his letters covering this period, all of which have been thoroughly annotated and indexed.Trade Review"Few things, as Pudd'nhead observed, are harder to put up with than the annoyance of a good example, and this building collection of the letters is horribly, excruciatingly good. It sets standards of diligence that will cause future editors of writers' letters to weep."-Jonathan Raban, Times Literary Supplement "One of the most important collections of letters by an American author... admirably organized and set forth as to become a source of wonder to general readers and delight to advanced students of literary history"-Genevieve Stuttaford, Publishers Weekly "One of the great scholarly enterprises of the century. Since the 1970s the... members of the Mark Twain Project at the University of California have been turning out magnificent editions of the writer's letters, notebooks, travel narratives and fiction. If you want to enjoy, and to understand fully, the genius of Mark Twain, the California editions are the only texts to have."-Michael Shelden, London Telegraph

Book SynopsisLongtime admirers of Mark Twain are aware of how integral animals were to his work as a writer, from his first stories through his final years, including many pieces that were left unpublished at his death. This title, illustrated with 30 images, gathers writings from the full span of Mark Twain's career.Trade Review"An unfamiliar facet of a literary giant... Succinctly represents Twain's admiration for the animal kingdom and relentless optimism in the face of human inadequacies." Publishers Weekly "A work that can easily be enjoyed by the casual reader of Twain and certainly qualifies as an essential volume for the devoted Twain scholar." -- Martin Zehr Mark Twain Forum "This collection is as entertaining, visceral, sardonic and chastising as any of his [Twain's] major works." -- Martin Zehr Kansas City Star "Damn near flawless... The perfect holiday gift-book." Open Letters Blog "Enjoy the tongue-twisting discourse Twain engages in with his two daughters about cats and much more." Cat Fancy "Brings together full stories, sketches, and brief passages that demonstrate Twain's unique voice, skill as a writer, compassion, and humor. 2 in stock

Book SynopsisAn autobiography of Mark Twain that describes a chronology of his life, brief family biographies, and an excerpt from the Autobiography of Mark Twain, Volume 2 - a controversial but characteristically humorous attack on Christian doctrine.Trade Review"Smith and her companion editors have accomplished a herculean task... A more accurately arranged collection than any earlier edition." American Literary Realism "Sometimes the autobiography seems Twain's letter to posterity. At other times, reading it feels like eavesdropping on a conversation he is having with himself... This first installment of Twain's autobiography brings us closer to all of him than we have ever come before." New York Review Of Books "This is a book to treasure for all friends of Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn." Acadiana Lifestyle Magazine "Now, common sense, at last. We have, emblazoned big as life on the paperback cover underneath Twain's photo ... the words 'Reader's Edition.' The very idea of it is a winner... It is less academically punctilious but indeed more reader-friendly." Buffalo News "Dip into the first enormous volume of Twain's autobiography that he had decreed should not appear until 100 years after his death. And Twain will begin to seem strange again, alluring and still astonishing, but less sure-footed, and at times both puzzled and puzzling in ways that still resonate with us, though not the ways we might expect." New York Times "This is a book for dipping, not plunging. Read, as Twain might put it, until interest pales, and then jump. It feels like a form of time travel." New York Times/The Opinion Pages "Twain generously provides the 21st century aficionado a marvelous read. His crystalline humor and expansive range are a continuous source of delight and awe... [He] has given us 'an astonishment' in his autobiography with his final, beautifully unorganized genius and intemperate thoughts. Pull up a chair and revel." Los Angeles Times Book Review "Mission accomplished, Mr. Clemens." -- Roger Boylan Boston Review "The bestseller chart is awash with memoirs -- but none offer the extreme reading of the Autobiography of Mark Twain." -- Debra Craine The Times "His "whole frank mind,' sharp and funny, is seared onto every page. A" Entertainment Weekly "Brimming with Twain's humor, ideas and opinions, this is a book for anyone interested in the writer's work and life." Curledup.com "With the uncensored Twain finally here, we're the furthest thing from indifferent." Time Magazine "Promises a no-holds barred perspective on Twain's life, and will be rich with rambunctious, uncompromising opinions." Herald Scotland "Twain's writing here is electric, alternately moving and hilarious. He couldn't write a ho-hum sentence." Library Journal "Twain would approve!" Bookideas.com "A major achevement." Choice "Twain's autobiography, finally available after a century, is a garrulous outpouring-and every word beguiles." Wall Street Journal "Twian's 'Final Plan' has been released in a truly spectacular first volume of his posthumous 'Autobiography'." -- Vitali Vitaliev Engineering & Technology "Pure Twain at his typically discursive, rambling, and droll... The bard of Hannibal still has much to say." Book SynopsisAt the turn of the twentieth century Minnie Maddern Fiske, a New York actress, socialite, and animal rights activist, wrote to Mark Twain with an unusual request: for Twain to write about the evils of bullfighting equal to that of his anti-vivisectionist story A Dog's Tale. Twain responded with A Horse's Tale, a comic animal tale that doubled as a frontier adventure and political diatribe. A Horse's Tale concerns Soldier Boy, Buffalo Bill Cody's favorite horse, as the protagonist and sometimenarrator at a fictional frontier outpost with the U.S. Seventh Cavalry. When the general's orphaned niece arrives, Buffalo Bill takes her under his wing and ultimately lends her Soldier Boy so that they may seek adventure together. Twain uses the friendship between the girl and the horse as the basis for his eventual indictment of the barbarism of Spanish bullfighting. Twain's novella is unusual for its complex tone-combining a comic children's story and a dark portrait of animal cruelty. Including the themes of transatlantic relations and frontier culture, Twain offers a fresh look into the world of Buffalo Bill Cody from the perspective of one of America's most beloved authors. First published in 1906 in Harper's Monthly and as a single volume the following year, A Horse's Tale never again appeared in print except in anthologies of Twain's work. This edition includes the full text of Twain's original story, an introduction that situates the work in historical and biographical context, thorough annotations, and the addition of significant archival material related to Twain, Cody, and Fiske.
