Portrait of Lewis Carroll

Lewis Carroll, the pen name of Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, was a pioneering Victorian author whose playful imagination transformed children's literature. Best known for creating the whimsical world of Wonderland, he combined sharp logic, linguistic invention and gentle satire to produce stories that continue to enchant readers of all ages.

Beyond his celebrated fiction, Carroll was a mathematician, photographer and lover of wordplay, whose precise intellect balanced his taste for nonsense. His works remain cornerstones of English storytelling, inviting generations to explore curiosity, reason and the joyful absurdity of the human mind.

Whereas — to choose one notable predecessor — Helen Oxenbury made the text fresh and cozy, Riddell has reinstated its oddness with his glamorous, fantastical caricatures and super-skillful line. He has also made the Mad Hatter female * The Times *He has now taken on the big challenge: Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. As with all his pictures of children, Alice is huge-eyed and delicate, but his cartoonist’s eye means he does a lovely Gryphon and Mock Turtle. This is quite a hefty hardback. * The Spectator *Riddell breathes new life into Alice, giving her a striking dark bob. A delicious new edition, with colour plates and pencil sketches by this remarkable artist. * Irish Independent *Many great artists have drawn Alice, but I think this sumptuous hardback and jacketed version by the ex-Waterstones Children's Laureate is my personal favorite. * Bath magazine and Bristol magazine *This really is a collector’s hardback edition – the spine is about 4cm thick! – and it is a book you will treasure forever. It's an entirely different approach to the notion of illustration... This book succeeds in scratching the itch many admirers of Carroll and Dali have felt for too long."--Megan Volpert, PopMatters "[The drawings were] originally printed alongside the rise of 1960s psychedelia, we can return to examine the curious collaboration between one of the most prolific 20th-century dreamers and one of the 19th-century's most influential fantasies."--Allison Meier, Hyperallergic "The hardcover book as a physical object has much to recommend it. Beautifully designed with high-quality paper, it is nonetheless inexpensive enough that parents shouldn't panic at the prospect of thumbprints and spills if they read or give it to their children. A great gift for children, children-at-heart, and lovers of timeless culture, it will earn a proud place by the bedside, on the bookshelf, or on the coffee table right beside the tiny golden key to the garden of your imagination."--Jon Sobel, Blogcritics.org "Dali's illustrations have a colourful force of their own. Carroll's Alice anticipated the Surrealist wonderland: dreams and paradoxes, puns and psychoanalysis, distortions of space and time."--Dominic Green, Standpoint "[This] is the copy of Alice's Adventures you keep after having given all the other celebratory variants away ... it comes with two very astute and well-illustrated introductions... It is, as the introductions state, as both creators would like to see it--two weird and/or wonderful minds with much in common, harmonizing across the centuries to result in this very handsome modern edition."--John Lloyd, The Bookbag "All in all a marvelous book printed on thick paper. This anniversary edition will be an irresistible temptation to any bibliophile."--A. Bultheel "The introduction by Burstein ... and Thomas Banchoff provides a valuable grounding in [Dali's] interests and obsessions at the time the gouaches were created."--Library Journal "An elegant edition."--Art Quarterly "[A] stunning 150th-anniversary edition of the classic novel Alice's Adventures in Wonderland... Dali's illustrations afford us a glimpse of Wonderland as he sees it, allowing us to better grasp the implications, tropes and symbols the work is pregnant with."--Wan Lixin, Shanghai Daily "[S]tunning."--Bill Condie, Cosmos Magazine "Older students, especially those studying art and graphics, might well find much to research in this extraordinary collaboration."--Jane Doonan, School Librarian "For more than half a century, this unusual yet organic cross-pollination of genius remained an almost mythic artifact, reserved for collectors and scholars. To mark the 150th anniversary of the beloved book, Princeton University Press brought back to life the Dali-illustrated Alice's Adventures in Wonderland... A crowning achievement among the greatest illustrations of the Carroll masterpiece from the century and a half since its inception, featuring new introductions by Mark Burstein, president of the Lewis Carroll Society of North America, and mathematician Thomas Banchoff, who knew and collaborated with Dali."--Maria Popova, Brain Pickings "The book itself is a beautiful physical object, and it makes available for the first time to the general public Salvador Dali's illustrations for the 1969 Random House edition [Maecenas Press, New York]. We hold it in our hands, enjoying its weight and beautiful cover (Salvador Dali's The lobster's quadrille). We open it at random, and our eyes feel immediately welcomed by the comfortable text size and off-white high-quality paper. We glance through its pages, noticing their pleasant texture, and our curiosity is raised by the attractive colors and shapes of the illustrations. Book Synopsis''They sought it with thimbles, they sought it with care; They pursued it with forks and hope; They threatened its life with a railway share; They charmed it with smiles and soap'' Ever since Lewis Carroll''s nonsense epic appeared in 1876 readers have joined his ten-man Snark-hunting crew and pursued the search with great enthusiasm. What are they hunting for? What is the Snark? Numerous theories have been proposed. Carroll himself provides a helpful Preface to the poem and is recorded as having explained to one reader: ''In answer to your question, ''What did you mean the Snark was?'' will you tell your friend that I meant that the Snark was a Boojum. I trust that she and you will now feel quite satisfied and happy.'' This edition, previously published as The Annotated Snark, reproduces the original illustrations by Henry Holiday, including the ''supressed'' Boojum drawing. Martin Gardner provides an introduction, notes and bibliography, and an Appendix contains F. C. S. Schiller''s

Book SynopsisA deluxe edition of Lewis Carroll''s timeless tale of wondrously charming nonsense, in time for its 150th anniversaryWhen Alice follows the White Rabbit down the rabbit hole, little does she know that she is traveling to a world of magic where common-sense is turned upside-down. The dream worlds of nonsensical Wonderland and the backwards Looking-Glass kingdom are full of the unexpected: a baby turns into a pig, time is missing at a tea-party, and a wild chess game makes the seven-year-old Alice a queen. Displaying Lewis Carroll''s gift for sparkling wordplay, puzzles, and riddles, Alice''s Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking-Glass offer magical adventure, pointed satire of Victorian England, and playful explorations of sophisticated logic. Yet amid Carroll''s antic humor and joyful creation, poignant moments of nostalgia for fleeting childhood give the stories extraordinary emotional depth. And wherever Carroll takes Alice, John Tenniel''s iconic illustrations follow with whimsical depictions of her tizzying journeys. Original, experimental, and unparalleled for pure delight, the adventures of Alice in Wonderland are tales to be read and shared across generations.Trade ReviewA work of glorious intelligence and literary devices...Nonsense becomes a form of higher sense" -- Malcolm BradburyAlice in Wonderland is one of the top 25 books of all time. I always loved the book and I always loved the various characters, the psychedelic nature of it and kind-of odd allegorical stories inside stories. I always thought it was beautiful -- Jonny DeppWonderland and the world through the Looking Glass were, I always knew, different from other imagined worlds. Nothing could be changed, although things in the story were always changing...Carroll moves his readers as he moves chess pieces and playing cards -- A. S. ByattIt would not have occurred to me even to suspect that the "children's tale" was in brilliant ways coded to be read by adults and was in fact an English classic, a universally acclaimed intellectual tour de force and what might be described as a psychological/anthropological dissection of Victorian England. It seems not to have occurred to me that the child- Alice of drawing rooms, servants, tea and crumpets and chess, was of a distinctly different background than my own. I must have been the ideal reader: credulous, unjudging, eager, thrilled. I knew only that I believed in Alice, absolutely." -- Joyce Carol OatesThe Alices are the greatest nonsense ever written, and far greater, in my view, than most sense -- Philip Pullman

Book SynopsisFirst published in 1865, Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland began as a story told to Alice Liddell and her two sisters on a boating trip in July 1862. The novel follows Alice down a rabbit-hole and into a world of strange and wonderful characters who constantly turn everything upside down with their mind-boggling logic, word play, and fantastic parodies. The sequel, Through the Looking-Glass and What Alice Found There, was published in 1871, and was both a popular success and appreciated by critics for its wit and philosophical sophistication.Along with both novels and the original Tenniel illustrations, this edition includes Carroll’s earlier story Alice’s Adventures Under Ground. Appendices include Carroll’s photographs of the Liddell sisters, materials on film and television adaptations, selections from other “looking-glass” books for children, and “The Wasp in a Wig,” an originally deleted section of Through the Looking-Glass.Trade Review“Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland appeals to all new generations, and Richard Kelly’s edition is a fresh and fitting jamboree for our time. For the first time, it gives us in a single book both Lewis Carroll’s early version of Alice’s Adventures Under Ground and the full version of the story. It encapsulates the major theories of what the book means, and it provides photographs that Carroll took and excerpts from his diaries and letters; it also offers examples of early reviews, imitations, parodies, and recollections of the author. Altogether it is a splendid cornucopia that is bound to become the ultimate Alice for us and for generations to come.” — Morton N.
