Book SynopsisPatricia Meyer Spacks guides readers to a deeper appreciation of Elinor and Marianne Dashwood as they experience love, romance, and heartbreak. Sense and Sensibility: An Annotated Edition includes numerous color reproductions that vividly recreate Jane Austen’s world. This will be an especially welcome addition to the library of any Janeite.Trade ReviewIf you haven’t yet seen the Harvard University Press’s annotated Jane Austen series, prepare yourself for a major treat. This year Sense and Sensibility joins the other novels—Pride and Prejudice, Persuasion, Emma, and Northanger Abbey… The books are gorgeous. Notes and commentary in the broad margins enlighten and enrich the text and offer historic context without interfering with the narrative flow. Illustrations are plentiful and include everything from an old engraving of the Theatre Royal in London’s Drury Lane to a still from the Hugh Grant–Emma Thompson film version of the novel. Jane Austen lovers worldwide will cherish these books. * Christian Science Monitor *This series of annotated, illustrated classics from Harvard Press has become a lovely annual tradition. Over the years, the press has published annotated editions of The Wind in the Willows [and] The Picture of Dorian Gray (both annotated and uncensored!), and many others. Each one has been carefully and beautifully edited. The editors know what we like, though, and they have done more Jane Austen than they have anyone else; Sense and Sensibility: An Annotated Edition is the press’s fifth Austen book and is a worthy addition. It’s gorgeous to look at, with moire endpapers, illustrations from various editions of the book (as well as photographs of objects of the time, and paintings of contemporary well-known people), and, of course, the intelligent and abundant annotations, by scholar Patricia Meyer Spacks. -- Laurie Hertzel * Star Tribune *[Spacks] is particularly astute at contextualizing 19th century thought and ideas for a contemporary audience… For people returning to the novel, Spacks’ notes are quite illuminating, mostly serious, but occasionally fun… Spacks’ introduction and annotations indicate a person who has spent a considerable amount of time with the Dashwoods and their assorted friends and foes. This handsome edition is all the richer for it. -- Subashini Navaratnam * PopMatters *This annotated edition of Sense and Sensibility is a beautiful book, printed on acid-free, cream vellum paper with generous margins and woven bindings. It is an intelligent and enlightening literary companion, and an essential addition to any serious collection of Jane Austen’s works. -- Anna Creer * Sydney Morning Herald *The illustrations, literary commentary and definitions should be useful and interesting to any student of Jane Austen’s novels. -- Kathleen Elder * Austenprose *Harvard’s series of annotated Jane Austen works continues with this superb edition of Sense and Sensibility. What a boon to the student of Austen… Sense and Sensibility is my favorite Austen novel: this edition increased my enjoyment and understanding many times over. -- Joceline Bury * Jane Austen’s Regency World *With wit and wonderful attention to subtleties, and to often moving effect, Spacks guides the reader to a wider appreciation of this early Austen novel. -- Deidre Lynch, University of Toronto

Catherine meets Henry Tilney, a young clergyman, and his sister Eleanor, with whom she is anxious to become better acquainted. After Isabella and James are engaged, Isabella doubles her efforts to interest Catherine in her beloved brother. Although Catherine loves her friend dearly, she cannot extend this love to John, whom she knows in her heart to be an indolent, undesirable young man. • Persuasion

    Harvard University Press Persuasion

Book SynopsisThis richly illustrated annotated edition brings unmatched vitality to Austen’s most passionate and introspective love story. Commentary alongside the text explains difficult allusions, while the Introduction explicates the novel’s central conflicts as well as its relationship to Austen’s other works and to those of her contemporaries.Trade ReviewA fine example of the revitalized investment in beautiful books that keeps company with [the] latest phase of digital reproduction. Lavishly respectful of the best material values of the book (elegant cloth binding, gold-stamped spine, silky endpapers, thick and creamy paper, superb illustrations), it also celebrates Austen’s bookish credentials. Its size (25 × 24 cm) makes it monumental rather than portable: a book for exhibition and browsing rather than for continuous reading on the train or in bed. Page layout is double-columned, with the novel text occupying the inner column, and commentary, annotation and graphic illustration tucked around it, cosseting and adorning it, in a gesture akin to the medieval art of illumination. This does not represent the contest for the space of the page that we find in some dry scholarly editions of the twentieth century, where footnotes and layers of synoptic apparatus induce anxiety in the reader, but something closer to loving embellishment and homage… This volume’s purpose of pleasure is evident in the freewheeling style of Robert Morrison’s annotations. -- Kathryn Sutherland * Times Literary Supplement *A handsome volume graced with colorful illustrations. Morrison’s commentary not only includes new insights into Jane Austen’s story about the romance of Anne Elliot and Captain Frederick Wentworth, but also delves deep into details of life at the time. For readers who always wondered—and even for those who never thought to—Morrison decodes Wentworth’s nautical style of speaking and explains why a 19th-century inn wouldn’t have fresh food delivered. (‘In November they seem to have stopped ordering for guests altogether, as the social season had passed and they had no expectation of company,’ Morrison writes.) For lovers of Austen, it’s a deep dive into both her fiction and her world. -- Molly Driscoll * Christian Science Monitor *Jane Austen’s last work, published posthumously in 1817, is her deepest and most introspective. Austen’s view of the drawing apart and coming together of Anne Elliot and Frederick Wentworth is both wintry and warm. This lovely version features period illustrations, a fine introduction by the editor and enough annotation to amplify our understanding of this classic. * Globe and Mail *Robert Morrison’s lavishly illustrated and fulsomely annotated hardback edition of Persuasion is a thing of beauty… As enjoyable as much for its scrupulous scholarship as for its abundant color illustrations… The illustrations alone make the book a delight. One of their joys is enhancing our appreciation of the novel and the political and historical events that shape it… He gives us an immensely enriched reading experience that is as close to Austen in 3D as the printed word and image can achieve. -- Jane Moore * Notes and Queries *This edition is sumptuous eye candy for the Janeite. It is a real pleasure to have so much information collected and assembled for our edification and enjoyment. Morrison offers a lengthy and lucid introduction. -- Laurel Ann * Austenprose *I’ll say it right up front, my favorite book related to Jane Austen in 2011 was Persuasion: An Annotated Edition, edited by Robert Morrison. [It is] designed along the same lines as last year’s superb Pride and Prejudice: An Annotated Edition, edited by Patricia Meyer Spacks. Robert Morrison not only explains some of the more esoteric details of Persuasion, but also includes beautiful images that explain the era more clearly for the reader. This book is a coffee table edition of an annotation, although I would not recommend leaving it out unattended. A zealous Janeite guest might just squirrel it away unnoticed! -- Amanda Vickery * Jane Austen Today *What better way to revisit the world of Jane Austen’s last completed novel (published posthumously in 1818) than through one of the magnificent annotated editions produced regularly by Harvard University Press?… These Harvard editions are setting the standard for a new century of carefully supporting intelligent readers. -- Steve Donoghue * Open Letters Monthly *A beautiful new annotated edition of Persuasion from Harvard’s Belknap Press. -- Jenny Hendrix * Paris Review blog *Does Persuasion need annotation? You’d think the legions of loyal Jane Austen fans could annotate all of her books in their sleep. But this is a lovely book, in which Morrison, of Queen’s University, Ontario, gives us context, geography and history; defines some terms (sedan chair, dabchick, blain), and admits what he doesn’t know. (‘Why does Mrs. Clay send Mr. Elliot to Union Street…and what does this tell us about their relationship? Austen does not explain it.’) This book is lavishly illustrated and includes, in an appendix, Austen’s original ending. (When you read it, you’ll be glad she rewrote it.) -- Laurie Hertzel * Star Tribune *This gorgeous annotated edition of Persuasion, the second annotated Austen title Belknap Harvard has released, is a must for all Janeites. For those unfamiliar with Austen’s milieu, Morrison’s notes provide basic information, such as explanations of words or phrases and geographical information. However, Morrison goes beyond the basics in his notes, explaining the intricacies of the Navy and providing details about Austen’s allusions to figures such as Samuel Johnson. He also provides a fine scholarly analysis of the novel, including an extended discussion—in which he quotes the premier Austen scholars—of Captain Wentworth’s letter. And his preface firmly places the novel in the events of its setting, especially the Napoleonic Wars (which Austen never overtly refers to). The beauty of this book is the lovely pictures, such as fashion plates, naval scenes, sketches of Bath, and illustrations from various editions of the novel. This volume should please all readers, from those reading Persuasion for the first time to seasoned Austen scholars. The volume has been generating a lot of excitement in both scholarly and popular Austen circles, and rightly so! -- L. J. Larson * Choice *Jane Austen’s final novel continues to fascinate readers. This love story contains Austen’s most pointed social commentary, recognizing the rising status of the professional class and respecting the aristocrats with their inherited lands and titles. Morrison provides annotations alongside the novel’s text. He enables readers to understand the impact of these social changes on family interactions and obligations, especially marriage… Highly recommended to first-time Austen readers and to fans seeking further insight into Austen’s life and literary sources, as well as British life in her time. -- Nancy R. Ives * Library Journal *Robert Morrison’s new annotated edition of Persuasion is terrific: thorough, scrupulous, and thoughtful. It is a worthy addition to the wonderful Harvard series of annotated volumes, likely to be long read and much enjoyed by Austen enthusiasts. -- Patricia Meyer SpacksReaders who know Pride and Prejudice and Emma very well, can on encountering or re-encountering Austen’s final novel find it disconcerting and disorienting. Fortunately, they are now well served by the thorough and thoughtful annotation in Persuasion: An Annotated Edition. -- Deidre Lynch, University of Toronto

  • Pride and Prejudice

Broadview Press Ltd Pride and Prejudice

    2 in stock

Book SynopsisElizabeth Bennet is Austen’s most liberated and appealing heroine, and Pride and Prejudice has remained over most of the past two centuries Austen’s most popular novel. The story turns on the marriage prospects of the five daughters of Mr. and Mrs. Bennet, and especially on Elizabeth’s prejudice against the proud and distant Fitzwilliam Darcy. Pride and Prejudice is a romantic comedy that has been read as conservative and feminist, reactionary and revolutionary, rooted in the time of its composition and deliberately timeless. Robert Irvine’s introduction sets the novel in the context of the literary and intellectual history of the period, dealing with such crucial background issues as class relations in Britain, female exclusion from property and power, and the impact of the French Revolution. The introduction and annotations have been expanded and updated for the new edition, and a new appendix of Austen’s juvenilia has been added.Trade Review“Robert P. Irvine’s new edition of Pride and Prejudice is a superb version of Austen’s most frequently taught novel. Broadview’s Austen editions have always been my go-to for the classroom due to their rich introductions and expansive critical apparatuses, and this edition is no exception. Irvine’s cogent and insightful introduction clarifies the novel’s contexts and intertexts for both students and scholars, but what really set this and Broadview’s other Austen editions apart are the excellence and depth of their appendices; this one includes contemporary reviews and judiciously chosen excerpts from conduct books and texts on domestic tourism, on the French Revolution, and on militia regiments, as well as selections from Austen’s letters and juvenilia, all of which richly contextualize Pride and Prejudice for twenty-first-century readers. This edition will be a valuable resource for Austen scholars at all levels, perhaps especially for students who approach the novel with limited knowledge of the period.” — Suzanne L. Barnett, Manhattan College“This is my new go-to edition of Pride and Prejudice. Robert Irvine’s introduction usefully elucidates the social, political, and literary contexts of the novel, and his illuminating explanatory notes are indispensable for today’s student. As with all Broadview Editions, a range of supplementary materials offers productive frameworks for teaching the novel and will benefit both new and veteran readers of Austen.” — Mary-Catherine Harrison, University of Detroit MercyTable of Contents Acknowledgements Introduction Jane Austen and Her Time: A Brief Chronology A Note on the Text Map Pride and Prejudice Appendix A: From the Juvenilia (1792–93) 1. Austen’s spoof of the Gothic supplies not only entertainment, but also, as Wolfson demonstrates, insight into the author’s attitudes toward reading, gender relations, the novelist’s art, and much besides. -- Patricia Meyer Spacks, University of VirginiaNorthanger Abbey, least known of Jane Austen’s novels, offers some of her wittiest lines and most personal opinions. Susan Wolfson’s cogent and spirited introduction and her notes, acute and thorough, make this an edition every Austen enthusiast will learn from and enjoy. -- Claire Tomalin, author of Jane Austen: A Life

Book SynopsisThe author of one of the greatest romance novels of all time, Pride and Prejudice, takes her readers on a satiric tour through England's history, mercilessly exploiting the comedic potential of human foibles within British royalty. Part of Jane Austen's Juvenilia of the 1790s, The History of England was written during the author's teenage years. Filled with puns and parodies, the history begins with the reign of Henry IV and concludes with the death of Charles I more than two centuries later. Originally intending it for circulation and performance among family and friends, Jane also commissioned her sister Cassandra to draw illustrations to complement her signature wit and humor. This volume includes an informative introduction providing background context, along with extensive editorial commentary. Austen fans and history buffs are sure to delight in this history written by a partial, prejudiced, and ignorant historian.
