Portrait of Gaston Leroux

Gaston Leroux, the celebrated French novelist and journalist, is best known for his enduring masterpiece *The Phantom of the Opera*. Combining elements of mystery, romance, and gothic suspense, his work captures the allure and unease of fin‑de‑siècle Paris. Leroux's background as a court reporter and crime correspondent lent his fiction a sharp sense of realism and tension that continues to captivate readers.

Beyond his most famous tale of the haunted Paris Opera House, Leroux wrote numerous thrillers and detective stories that showcase his flair for intricate plotting and psychological depth. His legacy endures as a cornerstone of early twentieth‑century popular fiction, influencing generations of writers and adaptations across stage and screen.

Book SynopsisThe Phantom of the Opera is Gaston Leroux''s exquisite blend of Gothic horror and tragic romance, which formed the basis for a world-renowned stage musical. This Penguin Classics edition is translated with notes by Mireille Ribiere, and an introduction by Jann Matlock. When the new managers of the Paris Opera House ignore their predecessors'' warnings about the hideous ''Opera ghost'' stalking the theatre, it is a fatal mistake. The Phantom haunts the imagination of the beautiful and talented singer Christine Daaé, appearing to her as the ''Angel of Music'' - a disembodied voice, coaching her to sing as she never could before. When Christine is courted by a handsome young Viscount, the Phantom is consumed by jealousy and seeks revenge. And when Christine suddenly disappears after a triumphant singing performance, it becomes clear that the Phantom''s time has come. With its pervading atmosphere of menace, tinged with dark humour, The Phantom of the Opera (1910) has inspired film, stage and literature since its publication, including Andrew Lloyd Webber''s Phantom of the Opera, the most successful theatrical show of all time. Mireille Ribière''s highly readable and historically accurate translation captures the drive and drama of Leroux''s vivid tale, and is accompanied by extensive notes and further reading. Jann Matlock''s fascinating new introduction examines the Phantom''s legacy and uncovers the real secrets hidden in the Paris Opera House.Gaston Leroux (1868-1927) was born in Paris, the son of a building contractor. His first novel was serialised in the late 1890s, and with the 1907 publication of The Mystery of the Yellow Room he launched his career as a pioneer of the French detective novel. The Phantom of the Opera (1910) has been Leroux''s best-known novel in the English-speaking world ever since the resounding success of the 1925 silent film version. If you enjoyed The Phantom of the Opera, you might like Victor Hugo''s Les Miserables, also available in Penguin Classics.Trade Review“Ingenious . . . breathless suspense.”—The Nation

Book SynopsisGaston Leroux was born in Paris in 1868. Educated in Normandy and then Paris, he began work as a court reporter and theatre critic. He started writing fiction around 1907 and also formed a film company via which he published novels that were also turned into films. The Phantom of the Opera is by far his most famous work and had been adapted for film and theatre, most notably as the 1925 film starring Lon Chaney as the Phantom and as the 1986 award-winning musical by Andrew Lloyd Webber.Alexander Teixera de Mattos (1865-1921) was an Anglo-Dutch literary critic and one of the finest translators of his generation. He was the leading translator for the Lutetian Society, a group that worked to bring masterpieces of European fiction into the English language. His translations included the works of Maurice Leblanc, Emilé Zola and Gaston Leroux. Such is the quality of his work that many of his translations remain in print to this day.

Book SynopsisThe Mystery of the Yellow Room (1908) is a novel by French writer Gaston Leroux. Originally serialized in L’Illustration from September to November 1907, The Mystery of the Yellow Room marked the first appearance of popular character Joseph Rouletabille, a reporter and part-time sleuth who features in several of Leroux’s novels. Originally a journalist, Leroux turned to fiction after reading the works of Arthur Conan Doyle and Edgar Allan Poe. Often considered one of the best locked-room mysteries of all time, the novel has been adapted several times for film and television. Joseph Rouletabille is more than meets the eye. A reporter by profession, he spends his free time working as an amateur detective, using his journalistic talents to compile facts and track down leads. When the young daughter of a prominent professor is found badly beaten in a locked room at the Château du Glandier, Roulebatille sets out to investigate with his trusted assistant Sainclair. After conducting interviews with several members of the castle staff, he is told that France’s top detective Frédéric Larsan has been assigned to the case. Larsan soon names Robert Darzac, Ms. Stangerson’s fiancé, as his primary suspect. Having already ruled Darzac out, Roulebatille begins to grow suspicious when the man is arrested and seems hesitant to defend himself. Working behind the scenes, the unassuming sleuth must race against time to prove Darzac’s innocence and stop Ms. Stangerson’s attacker from finishing what he started. The Mystery of the Yellow Room is a story of danger and suspense from one of history’s finest detective novelists. Joseph Rouletabille is without a doubt France’s answer to Sherlock Holmes. With a beautifully designed cover and professionally typeset manuscript, this edition of Gaston Leroux’s The Mystery of the Yellow Room is a classic of French literature reimagined for modern readers.
