  • The Annotated Poe

Harvard University Press The Annotated Poe

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisEdgar Allan Poe is perhaps America’s most famous writer. Yet he remains misunderstood, his works easily confused with the legend of a troubled genius. In this annotated edition of tales and poems, Kevin J. Hayes debunks the Poe myth, enables a larger appreciation of Poe’s career and varied achievements, and investigates his weird afterlives.Trade ReviewThe Annotated Poe is a stupendous hit. The annotations—presented in the form of marginalia and printed, delightfully, in red—provided by Hayes are perfectly, uncannily pitched to appeal both to readers who’ve never read a word of Edgar Allan Poe and readers who know his works backwards and forwards… It’s a bravura performance, lavish with illustrations. -- Steve Donoghue * Open Letters Monthly *A lushly illustrated volume that elucidates some of Poe’s best-loved works. -- Jan Gardner * Boston Globe *Poe startles and enchants, but he springs traps for the unwary. There is no better guide through Poe’s magic house of mirrors than Kevin Hayes, who brings a wealth of expertise to his annotations. This handsomely produced edition is a treasure-house for Poe novices and initiates alike. -- Nicholas Frankel, Virginia Commonwealth UniversityRecommended…for anyone who has an interest in Poe’s life and work. -- Morris Hounion * Library Journal *By giving Poe the scholarly attention he deserves, Harvard University Press’s beautifully designed new edition The Annotated Poe combats the demeaning cliches. Novelist and critic William Giraldi’s foreword elegantly places Poe within his historical, biographical, and critical context. Editor Kevin J. Hayes picked a savvy selection of tales and poems and provides richly detailed and deeply insightful notes that consistently add complexity and depth to the texts. The beautiful illustrations from all manner of media amplify some of the more ethereal of Poe’s imaginative creations. This new edition invites readers to take a fresh look at Poe and his far-ranging artistic legacy. -- Matt Hanson * Arts Fuse *

Random House USA Inc The Collected Tales And Poems Of Edgar Allan Poe

    10 in stock

Book SynopsisEdgar Allan Poe was one of the most original writers in the history of American letters, a genius who was tragically misunderstood in his lifetime. He was a seminal figure in the development of science fiction and the detective story, and exerted a great influence on Dostoyevsky, Arthur Conan Doyle, Jules Verne, and Charles Baudelaire, who championed him long before Poe was appreciated in his own country. Baudelaire's enthusiasm brought Poe a wide audience in Europe, and his writing came to have enormous importance for modern French literature. This edition includes his most well-known works--'The Raven,' 'The Pit and the Pendulum,' 'Annabel Lee,' 'The Fall of the House of Usher,' 'The Murders in the Rue Morgue'--as well as less-familiar stories, poems, and essays.

Book SynopsisEdited and with an Introduction by Matthew Pearl Includes “The Murders in the Rue Morgue,” “The Mystery of Marie Rogêt,” and “The Purloined Letter”   Between 1841 and 1844, Edgar Allan Poe invented the genre of detective fiction with three mesmerizing stories of a young French eccentric named C. Auguste Dupin. Introducing to literature the concept of applying reason to solving crime, these tales brought Poe fame and fortune. Years later, Dorothy Sayers would describe “The Murders in the Rue Morgue” as “almost a complete manual of detective theory and practice.” Indeed, Poe’s short mysteries inspired the creation of countless literary sleuths, among them Sherlock Holmes. Today, the unique Dupin stories still stand out as utterly engrossing page-turners.   Includes a Modern Library Reading Group Guide

Book Synopsis America''s most influential literary figure worldwide is familiar to most readers of short fiction through only about a dozen stories. This is because many of Poe's tales depend on knowledge a reader in 1835 or 1845 might have had that a typical reader in 2000 would not. In this extensively annotated and meticulously edited selection of Poe's short fiction, Stuart Levine and Susan F. Levine connect Poe to major literary forces of his era and to the rapidly changing U.S. of the 1830s and 1840s, discussing Shelley, Carlyle, Byron, Emerson, and Hawthorne, as well as the railroad, photography, and the telegraph. In the process, they reveal a Poe immersed in the America of his day--its politics, science, technology, best-selling books, biases, arts, journalism, fads, scandals, and even sexual mores--and render accessible all thirty-two stories included here. The general Introduction, the headnote to each story, and the annotations included in this volume have been extensively reviseTrade Review Thirty-Two Stories appears in an attractive and readable format, with the 1848 'Ultima Thule' daguerrotype of Poe featured prominently on the front cover. Gone are the double-column pages, endnote style, and thematic organization of material that made the 1976 edition clumsy. Instructors and students will not have to battle with an arbitrary conceptual framework, since the stories in the new edition are presented in order of their first publication, and they will find the annotations more accessible at the bottom of the page. The typefaces are larger and bolder and many of the illustrations that graced the 1976 edition have been enlarged. . . . For college instructors and general readers interested in a fully annotated selection of Poe’s tales, attractively presented in a one-volume paperback edition, Thirty-Two Stories is the best thing on the market. --Bruce I. Book SynopsisEdgar Allan Poe was born in 1809 in Boston, Massachusetts. As the author of The Murders in the Rue Morgue, he is considered to be the father of the detective fiction genre. However, he is also widely known for his poetry, such as "The Raven", which brought him much critical acclaim during his lifetime, but little remuneration, and for his classic horror stories, such as "The Fall of the House of Usher" and "The Masque of the Red Death". The circumstances surrounding his death in 1849 are themselves a mystery because he was delirious when found and was lying in the street. He died four days later in hospital in Baltimore. All the records, including his death certificate, were destroyed. His literary legacy lives on and has influenced countless generations of writers.

Broadview Press Ltd The Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym of Nantucket

Book SynopsisEdgar Allan Poe’s only long fiction has provoked intense scholarly discussions about its meaning since its first publication. The novel relates the adventures of Pym after he stows away on a whaling ship, where he endures starvation, encounters with cannibals, a whirlpool, and finally a journey to an Antarctic sea. It draws on the conventions of travel writing and science fiction, and on Poe’s own experiences at sea, but is ultimately in a category of its own.Appendices include virtually all of the contemporary sources of exploration and south polar navigation that Poe consulted and adapted to the narrative, together with reviews and notices of Pym and a sampling of responses to the novel from a wide array of authors, from Herman Melville to Jules Verne. Seven illustrations are also included.Trade Review“This new edition of Poe’s only completed novel represents a welcome option for instructors. The edition features a comprehensive critical introduction detailing the history of Pym scholarship and critical approaches, a detailed chronology of Poe’s life, and three valuable appendices that reprint Poe’s most important literary sources, a healthy selection of contemporary reviews, and responses by other writers such as Melville and James. The selection of sources and reviews will delight instructors eager to teach the novel in its nineteenth-century context.” — Leland S. Person, University of Cincinnati“This scrupulously prepared, thorough, and extremely useful edition of Poe’s only novel will thrill students, instructors, and general Poe aficionados in equal measure. Indeed, the map of Pym’s voyage, incredibly appearing here for the first time, is worth the price of admission alone! The developed and informative introduction, meticulous footnotes, well-considered bibliography, and carefully selected appendices combine to offer a model of accessible and impressive scholarship ideal for the classroom or for the general reader of Poe.
