  • The Collected Tales And Poems Of Edgar Allan Poe

Random House USA Inc The Collected Tales And Poems Of Edgar Allan Poe

    10 in stock

Book SynopsisEdgar Allan Poe was one of the most original writers in the history of American letters, a genius who was tragically misunderstood in his lifetime. He was a seminal figure in the development of science fiction and the detective story, and exerted a great influence on Dostoyevsky, Arthur Conan Doyle, Jules Verne, and Charles Baudelaire, who championed him long before Poe was appreciated in his own country. Baudelaire's enthusiasm brought Poe a wide audience in Europe, and his writing came to have enormous importance for modern French literature. This edition includes his most well-known works--'The Raven,' 'The Pit and the Pendulum,' 'Annabel Lee,' 'The Fall of the House of Usher,' 'The Murders in the Rue Morgue'--as well as less-familiar stories, poems, and essays.

    10 in stock

Book SynopsisEdited and with an Introduction by Matthew Pearl Includes “The Murders in the Rue Morgue,” “The Mystery of Marie Rogêt,” and “The Purloined Letter”   Between 1841 and 1844, Edgar Allan Poe invented the genre of detective fiction with three mesmerizing stories of a young French eccentric named C. Auguste Dupin. Introducing to literature the concept of applying reason to solving crime, these tales brought Poe fame and fortune. Years later, Dorothy Sayers would describe “The Murders in the Rue Morgue” as “almost a complete manual of detective theory and practice.” Indeed, Poe’s short mysteries inspired the creation of countless literary sleuths, among them Sherlock Holmes. Today, the unique Dupin stories still stand out as utterly engrossing page-turners.   Includes a Modern Library Reading Group Guide

Book Synopsis America''s most influential literary figure worldwide is familiar to most readers of short fiction through only about a dozen stories. This is because many of Poe's tales depend on knowledge a reader in 1835 or 1845 might have had that a typical reader in 2000 would not. In this extensively annotated and meticulously edited selection of Poe's short fiction, Stuart Levine and Susan F. Levine connect Poe to major literary forces of his era and to the rapidly changing U.S. of the 1830s and 1840s, discussing Shelley, Carlyle, Byron, Emerson, and Hawthorne, as well as the railroad, photography, and the telegraph. In the process, they reveal a Poe immersed in the America of his day--its politics, science, technology, best-selling books, biases, arts, journalism, fads, scandals, and even sexual mores--and render accessible all thirty-two stories included here. The general Introduction, the headnote to each story, and the annotations included in this volume have been extensively reviseTrade Review Thirty-Two Stories appears in an attractive and readable format, with the 1848 'Ultima Thule' daguerrotype of Poe featured prominently on the front cover. Gone are the double-column pages, endnote style, and thematic organization of material that made the 1976 edition clumsy. Instructors and students will not have to battle with an arbitrary conceptual framework, since the stories in the new edition are presented in order of their first publication, and they will find the annotations more accessible at the bottom of the page. The typefaces are larger and bolder and many of the illustrations that graced the 1976 edition have been enlarged. . . . Book SynopsisEdgar Allan Poe was born in 1809 in Boston, Massachusetts. As the author of The Murders in the Rue Morgue, he is considered to be the father of the detective fiction genre. However, he is also widely known for his poetry, such as "The Raven", which brought him much critical acclaim during his lifetime, but little remuneration, and for his classic horror stories, such as "The Fall of the House of Usher" and "The Masque of the Red Death". The circumstances surrounding his death in 1849 are themselves a mystery because he was delirious when found and was lying in the street. He died four days later in hospital in Baltimore. All the records, including his death certificate, were destroyed. His literary legacy lives on and has influenced countless generations of writers.

Broadview Press Ltd The Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym of Nantucket

Book SynopsisEdgar Allan Poe’s only long fiction has provoked intense scholarly discussions about its meaning since its first publication. The novel relates the adventures of Pym after he stows away on a whaling ship, where he endures starvation, encounters with cannibals, a whirlpool, and finally a journey to an Antarctic sea. It draws on the conventions of travel writing and science fiction, and on Poe’s own experiences at sea, but is ultimately in a category of its own.Appendices include virtually all of the contemporary sources of exploration and south polar navigation that Poe consulted and adapted to the narrative, together with reviews and notices of Pym and a sampling of responses to the novel from a wide array of authors, from Herman Melville to Jules Verne. Seven illustrations are also included.Trade Review“This new edition of Poe’s only completed novel represents a welcome option for instructors. The edition features a comprehensive critical introduction detailing the history of Pym scholarship and critical approaches, a detailed chronology of Poe’s life, and three valuable appendices that reprint Poe’s most important literary sources, a healthy selection of contemporary reviews, and responses by other writers such as Melville and James. The selection of sources and reviews will delight instructors eager to teach the novel in its nineteenth-century context.” — Leland S. Person, University of Cincinnati“This scrupulously prepared, thorough, and extremely useful edition of Poe’s only novel will thrill students, instructors, and general Poe aficionados in equal measure. Indeed, the map of Pym’s voyage, incredibly appearing here for the first time, is worth the price of admission alone! The developed and informative introduction, meticulous footnotes, well-considered bibliography, and carefully selected appendices combine to offer a model of accessible and impressive scholarship ideal for the classroom or for the general reader of Poe. Book SynopsisEdgar Allan Poe’s stories and poems are among the most haunting and indelible in American literature, but critics for decades persisted in seeing Poe as an anomaly, or even an anachronism. His works, with their bizarrely motivated characters and mysterious settings, did not seem to be a part of the literature of early nineteenth-century America. Critics realize now, though, that Poe was even more a part of the contemporary American literary scene than many of his more “nationalistic” peers, and that in much of his work Poe was making commentaries on slavery and Southern social attitudes, technology, the urban landscape, political economy, and other subjects. This Broadview Edition includes a selection of Poe’s poems, tales, and sketches in such diverse modes of writing as tales of the supernatural and psychic conflict, satires and hoaxes, science fiction and detective fiction, and nonfiction essays on literary and social topics. These are supplemented by a selection of contextual documents—newspaper and magazine articles, treatises, and other historical texts—that will help readers understand the social, literary, and intellectual milieus in which Poe wrote.Trade Review“Carefully selected, expertly edited, and judiciously annotated, James M. Hutchisson’s Broadview Edition makes an excellent introduction to Poe’s imaginative and critical writings. Though intended for classroom use, this exciting new edition will appeal to all readers who wish to deepen their appreciation of Edgar Allan Poe, the ‘bad boy’ of American literature.” — Kevin Hayes, University of Central Oklahoma“Edgar Allan Poe: Selected Poetry and Tales brilliantly represents the best scholarly material on Poe, delivered in an accessible, conversational tone that will appeal to students. The contents run the gamut from Poe’s notorious and imaginative horror tales to his literary criticism. Moreover, James M. Hutchisson has included examples of Poe’s science fiction stories, detective tales, and the oft-overlooked satires. Instructors and students alike will benefit from this edition’s introduction, timeline, footnotes, and appendices, which help to place Poe within his literary and social timeframe, a consideration too often neglected.” — Amy Branam, Frostburg State UniversityTable of Contents Acknowlegements Introduction Edgar Allan Poe: A Brief Chronology A Note on the Texts Poetry Tales Appendix A: Social and Historical Contexts Appendix B: Literary Contexts Appendix C: Poe on Writers and Writing Selected Bibliography
