Book SynopsisTrade Review"Fans of this perfect preschool fare will once again delight in the series’ playful treatment of the everyday activities.... Biggs’ boldly colored, digital art is presented in clean, clear compositions that make good use of white space...to highlight the playful action of the story rather than the domestic setting. The use of white, however, is perhaps most effective in the pleasing final spread showing both friends licking off thick milk mustaches. The short, carefully crafted sentence can also support beginning readers in their efforts to decode text. A satisfying addition to a consistently strong series. Bon appetit." --Kirkus Reviews, July 15, 2011"Biggs’s vibrant illustrations fill out the spare text with details: Brownie’s dress has an apple, pear, and orange pattern; the blue wallpaper has a citrus-slice pattern; and so on...preschoolers will enjoy the friendship and older children may memorize the short, simple text to build pre-reading skills. A solid addition to the series." --School Library Journal, August 2011"The distinctive digital artwork uses bold lines, clearly defined shapes, and pleasing colors to create a homey setting for this likeable duo. With short, simple lines of text in large type, this picture book will please beginning readers as well as younger fans of the Brownie & Pearl series." --Booklist, September 1, 2011

Book SynopsisSynopsis coming soon.......Trade Review* “Several of the poems from Rylant’s wry meditation God Went to Beauty School (2003) are regathered, rearranged and luminously illustrated by Frazee…. Frazee’s illustrations take the idea of the multiplicity of God in all of us and run with it…. Divinity is indicated with a faint halo, but Frazee never sacrifices the ineffable humanity of each depiction; her Gods are fat, skinny, joyful, contemplative, worn-out…. Funny, devout and oh, so human; this collection hits home.” * Kirkus Reviews, April 10, 2013, *STARRED REVIEW *"Sixteen poems from Rylant’s God Went to Beauty School (2003) return in a new collection, accompanied by new artwork from Frazee, whose graphite-and-gouache illustrations are ideally attuned to the poems’ moments of irreverent humor and poignant reflection. In several images, Frazee portrays God as a child.... Rylant and Frazee’s visions of God as a trucker delivering a fan letter to a country music singer, an ostensibly homeless woman walking through a gorgeous gothic church, and a dadlike fellow in plaid pajamas and slippers sipping coffee under an apple tree combine to form a celebration of God’s humanity and mankind’s divinity." * Publishers Weekly, August 2013 ** "An award-winning author and illustrator team up to create a lyrical celebration of where the divine meets the mundane, and ultimately what it means to be human. In this small book of poetry, God decides to “try out” different activities and experiences of humanity, and the results are by turns thought-provoking and inspiring. Each of the 15 poems is coupled with a quietly incandescent illustration that supports the text but doesn’t overwhelm it or diminish its impact. Taken from the author’s longer collection God Went to Beauty School (HarperCollins, 2003), this slimmed down, repackaged version brilliantly captures its sweetness and substance but provides a simpler progression and arc. Selections alternate pronouns for the deity, with God referred to as He or She in each poem.... While this title might be controversial...it will appeal to a wide audience of both children and adults. This is one book that’s easy to pick up, but hard to put down again." * School Library Journal, November 2013, *STARRED REVIEW ** "Oh, God. As this book so intriguingly suggests, You do come in many shapes and sizes. Colors, too. But more than what the deity looks like, this slim volume of 15 poems focuses on what God does.... The messages aren’t always immediately clear, but that’s what makes this so much fun. Seeing God in new ways allows children to think about their relationship to Him or Her differently. In this interpretation, God and humans are co-creators of an evolving world. Though the poetry has been published before in a collection, the artwork is all new. Frazee’s pictures, each facing a page of text, are a powerful contrast of light and darkness, restlessness and contentment. God didn’t think she had time for a dog. But she got one anyway." * Booklist, November 2013, *STARRED REVIEW *"By imagining God’s experiences with such earthly undertakings as making spaghetti, catching a cold, working a desk job, writing a fan letter, and yes, adopting a stray dog, Cynthia Rylant and Marla Frazee have created a lovely and accessible collection of illustrated free-verse poems exploring God’s love and humanity...a beautiful collection which celebrates life and approaches the idea of God with sincerity and respect...very highly recommended." * VOYA, December 2013 *

  • Life

    Simon & Schuster Life

    10 in stock

Book SynopsisSynopsis coming soon.......Trade ReviewRylant (Creation) looks to the natural world for wisdom and consolation as Wenzel’s (They All Saw a Cat) lush, heavily worked artwork imagines a primordial Earth with few signs of human existence. “Life begins small,” Rylant opens; among bare hills, a lone plant sprouts from red earth. “Then it grows.” A fantastic gathering of wild animals and birds looks out at readers expectantly. “Ask any animal on earth, what do you love about life?” Each animal has its own answer (“The hawk will say sky”), and its distinctive nature and perception determine the way it sees the world, just as ours do. Difficulties appear and fade, and when low moments come, “trust the rabbit in the field and the deer who crosses your path.” Animals are not just wise: twin vignettes of an eager dog and a wide-eyed cat remind readers that “in every corner of the world, there is something to love.” Readers in search of inspiration that does not need to be taken on faith will find it in Rylant’s message that to live is to grow. -- Publishers Weekly, STARRED REVIEW * April 10, 2017 *Readers are invited to reflect on life with the help of animals.Addressing readers directly, the narrator opens with a modest statement: "Life begins small." See an elephant grow bigger as it walks underneath the fierce sun and gentle moon, through days and nights. Life, it seems, also promises change—and wonders. A hawk soars in the sky, while elsewhere, a camel stands tall in a desert. Sitting on a rock, a turtle relishes the "rain on its back." Each glimpse of an animal in the natural world elicits a small jolt of joy thanks in part to Caldecott honoree Wenzel's exquisite illustrations, which render these moments with low-key precision. On one page, dark and soft blues bathe an adult elephant and its smaller companion, both gray beacons in a picture of a nighttime march. On another page, a snake blends in with the smeared greens, yellowed brown, and hints of reds that make up the grass. But even with all these merry images, moments of bleakness can follow. The narrator proposes another fact: "Life is not always easy." A small bird flies alone and vulnerable through a storm, seeming lost before it finally breaks through. Thankfully, Rylant keeps the narratorial voice direct and brief during scenes serene or frightful. Flashes of levity in the illustrations and text (think "grassssssssssss") serve to underscore the creators' trust in readers. A splendid tribute to the world and its splendors, with something to offer audiences of a broad range of ages. (Picture book. 4-adult) -- Kirkus Reviews * 5/1/17 *Veteran author Rylant tackles a subject both as tiny as a leaf and as huge as the cosmos, as various animals are born and work their way through the beautiful, though sometimes scary, world. Most heartening here is the message that when things seem tough, there is always something to love, something to protect, and a reason to arise each morning, if only to find out what happens next. Rylant’s poetic text is as spare as Wenzel’s artwork is effusive. Occasionally, his nature scenes bring to mind the work of Henri Rousseau, but there is also humor, courtesy of the animals’ faces. Both text and art have disjointed moments—asking what the animals love about their lives takes away some of the grandeur, as does the one-and-done appearance of house pets amidst depictions of the natural world. But more important, this book gives a shining overview of life’s peaks and valleys and conveys the importance of understanding that a curve in the road only starts a journey anew. -- Booklist * May 15, 2017 *A spiritual yet not overtly religious epistle on hope and the many reasons to embrace life. It opens with the notion that “life begins small.” Wenzel shows a seedling surrounded by mountains. The next spread declares: “Even for the elephants. Then it grows.” A calf is seen looking up to the enormous adults in its herd. Several animals discuss what they love about life, and as the author acknowledges that “life is not always easy,” readers observe a bluebird flying through a storm. They are asked to remember that there is always “something to love…and to protect.” The narrative continues in this vein, promising that “it is worth waking up in the morning to see what might happen.” The mood of the child-friendly illustrations shifts appropriately from the darkness of the wilderness to the vitality of life seen in a flock of birds crossing the moon. The illustrator infuses the book with humor where possible, such as in the expression of a floppy-eared, stick-bearing dog or a camel kicking up sand across a spread...Wenzel’s exuberant paintings...are quite engaging and convey a deep appreciation for the wonders of the natural world. -- School Library Journal * June 2017 *

Book SynopsisSynopsis coming soon.......Trade ReviewThe Creation story, interpreted with minimalist art. Rylant's text, looking as if hand-lettered and adapted from Chapters 1 and 2 of the book of Genesis from the King James Bible, emphasizes for the youngest readers and listeners how very basic yet how extraordinary this story simultaneously is. Her naïve acrylic paintings are charmingly innocent and appealing, readily capturing the salient points of each day's work, each rendered in a separate double-page spread. (Creationists should be pleased at the painting of a dinosaur to depict the creation of"the beasts.") Children who already know this story may enjoy seeing and hearing this latest version. Youngsters who are unfamiliar with the opening chapters of the book of Genesis may well wonder, after the final lines, just what happens next? Such queries should stimulate lively conversations. Brushstrokesare readily visible, often dominating compositions, as in the creation of Dayand Night, in which darkness looks like a gray, feathered wing laid over the light. Depicted figures—the aforementioned dinosaur, birds, tortoises—have a pleasingly blobby look. This adaptation's low-key illustrations bring the story to a child's level... -- Kirkus ReviewsRylant’s illustrations for a simplified version of the Genesis creation story, adapted from the King James Bible, recall those from her Dog Heaven andCat Heaven—wet, thickly painted acrylics in which childlike forms appear against milky backgrounds. A featureless expanse of gray becomes yellow with the turn of a page as God says, “Let there be light.” God creates pale green grass and fruit trees daubed with bright color. When God makes man and woman, Rylant paints them as ash-gray figures standing apart from one another in a field, facing away from viewers and bathed in greenish light. In the penultimate spread, a friendly zebra gazes at a stand of trees bearing red and pink fruit. “He looked at everything he had created and made, and behold, it was very good.” It is the first image in which the created things are shown relating to one another, and the first in which warm feeling is expressed. The predominant impression is one of strange wondrousness as the world comes into being. All ages. -- Publishers Weekly * June 27, 2016 *The creation story has been told many times for children, but Rylant’s version presents its wonder in the simplest of ways. The spare text is faithful to the biblical account of those first seven days, but it takes Genesis’ words and distills them to their purest forms, not only making the text suitable for a young audience but also showing children the clarity and precision with which God worked. The narrative also highlights images not easily recalled from the original text. Does the biblical passage really call out whales by name as one of God’s creations? It does, and the two page spread that shows an arc of gray sitting upon the water bears witness to that fact. Rylant, who has occasionally done her own illustrations in the past, offers artwork that is as bold as it is spare. Thick brush strokes turn into arresting skies, seas, and sand; layers of acrylic paint form unique colors that are perhaps yet to be named. Colorful dots on bits of green growing from a brown barbecome fruit trees, and a long, thin line, squiggling along the sand is a snake. As with the best stories, this allows room for readers to add to its creation with their own thoughts and imaginations. — Ilene Cooper -- Booklist, STARRED REVIEW * September 1 *A pleasing addition for fans of Rylant and church libraries looking for multiple versions of Bible tales. -- School library Journal * September 2016 *
