Everyman Chess Opening Repertoire: The Modern Samisch: Combating

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThe Samisch variation is a powerful method to counter the popular King's Indian Defence. The key move is the advance f2-f3, consolidating White's central space advantage and limiting Black's options for counterplay. In the traditional Samisch White develops the queen's bishop on e3 but in the modern version, as explored in this book, the move Bg5 is preferred. This creates further problems for Black as the natural King's Indian counter ... e7-e5 allows White a potentially strong pin against the f6-knight, while chasing the bishop with ... h6 and ... g5 creates kingside weaknesses. ----- * Learn to play the Modern Samisch with confidence --- * Emphasis on plans and strategies * Written by an expert on the Modern SamischTrade ReviewI like Montany’s explanations because they are easy to follow and remember, and he did a good job for both sides. If your resolution for 2018 is to find a new weapon for fighting the KID and the Benoni, this is definitely the book for you! --- Davide Nastasio, georgiachessnews.com ----- The Modern Samisch is mostly geared towards competitive, highly-ranked players. Yet given that Montany spends ten pages explaining the first six moves at the outset of the book, as well as taking time to explain the underlying themes of the positions at hand throughout the book, The Modern Samisch becomes accessible to players of any level. Though, of course, the lower down the spectrum you are, the harder you will have to work. --- Mark Donlan, ChessCafe.com

Book SynopsisGarry Kasparov on Garry Kasparov: Part III is the final volume in a major three-volume series made unique by the fact that it records the greatest chess battles played by the greatest chessplayer of all-time. Kasparov''s series of historical volumes have received great critical and public acclaim for their rigorous analysis and comprehensive detail regarding the developments in chess that occurred both on and off the board. The first two volumes in this series saw Kasparov emerging as a huge talent, toppling his great rival Anatoly Karpov and then defending the World Championship title on three occasions. This third volume focuses on the final 12 years of Kasparov''s career up until his retirement from full-time chess in 2005. This period witnessed three further World Championship matches: wins against Short (London 1993) and Anand (New York 1995) before the loss against Kramnik (London 2000) which finally ended Kasparov''s 15-year tenure as world champion. This period also saw Kasparov achieve a colossal 2851 rating (1999), a record which stood until 2013. Despite loss of the World Championship, Kasparov continued to be ranked as the world number one and dominated the elite tournament circuit. He won the Linares super-tournament for four consecutive years (1999-2002) with the fourth of these victories in 2002 concluding an unprecedented run of ten straight wins in the world''s elite events (Linares 4, Wijk aan Zee 3, Sarajevo 2 and Astana 1). The games in this volume feature many masterpieces of controlled aggression played against the world''s absolute best.

  • Practical Chess Puzzles: 600 Positions to Improve

Everyman Chess Practical Chess Puzzles: 600 Positions to Improve

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisChess puzzle books are undoubtedly popular - and with good reason. Solving chess puzzles helps to sharpen a player's tactical and combinational skills. This ability is absolutely fundamental for chess development. You won't get better at tennis until you can consistently hit the ball with accuracy and you won't get better at chess until you improve your ability to calculate. It is that simple and there are no shortcuts. Many puzzle books take a far too simplistic approach and offer endless positions where the solution is nearly always along the lines of: queen takes something check, king takes queen, check, check and a pretty mate. Aesthetically pleasing perhaps but of minimal use for actual improvement as the patterns are so familiar. Practical Chess Puzzles avoids this pitfall. The positions chosen are far more like those that actually appear on the board during the vast majority of games. Furthermore, at all stages, the puzzles are ranked, enabling the student to gauge progress and identify and correct weaknesses. * 600 puzzles featuring instructive, typically "game-like" positions * A ranking system to assess progress.Trade ReviewPractical Chess Puzzles largely delivers what is promised. The authors say that they are writing for players from 1200-2200-quite a range!- and the puzzles in each section track from less to more complex... there is an overt effort to present lesser known, diverse examples, featuring North American players and a full range of position types. All this serves to keep solvers on their toes - John Hartmann, Chess Life. In summary, the content lives up to the title and any tournament player from say 1200 Elo to perhaps 2200 will derive much benefit from working through the content. It is good to find a whole tranche of new material and ideas from real games played by mostly amateur players - John Upham, BritishChessNews.com

  • Rewire Your Chess Brain: Endgame studies and

Everyman Chess Rewire Your Chess Brain: Endgame studies and

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisRewire Your Chess Brain is not your average chess book. It does not deal with opening theory or middlegame strategy. It focuses purely on problems and studies, all of which are the results of artificial construction rather than scenes from real-life battles. In a chess study, White has to play and win (or draw). In a chess puzzle, White has to force mate in a stipulated number of moves. The starting positions in both forms rarely resemble anything found over the board in real life play. However, the solutions are invariably surprising and often quite beautiful. The best examples of both forms have often been compared to great works of art. However, these are not mere gallery pieces, lacking practical application in real life play. Solving these puzzles can be extremely challenging and will, without question, improve the "real world" tactical ability of anyone attempting to do so. Prolific chess author and coach Cyrus Lakdawala has been intrigued by studies and problems all his life. When training his students he often sets them studies and problems to solve. Many of them who have adopted this technique have seen extraordinary increases in their chess ratings. In this book Lakdawala assembles the problems and studies that are most effective to improve tactical ability. Work your way through this book and you will undoubtedly see the results in your own games.Trade Review... the diligent reader who works their way through this new release from Everyman should improve not only their calculation but their creativity." • Dynamic Defence

    Everyman Chess Dynamic Defence

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisEvery chessplayer, from beginner to world champion, loves to win a game with a brilliant attacking display. However many, if not most, attacks that end in victory do so due to inaccurate defence. This may be due to simple tactical miscalculation or perhaps a more fundamental misunderstanding of the important principles of defence. Furthermore, many attacks that are launched are simply unsound but succeed because many players feel uncomfortable when forced to defend, get flustered and make mistakes. In this book, highly experienced chess author and coach, Neil McDonald addresses these issues. Defensive skill is crucial in chess. Good, accurate defence can win a game just as well as a fine attacking display can, so expertise in this department is essential for any player wishing to improve their game. With thorough explanations, questions, and exercises, this book provides fascinating material to enable you to hone your defensive skill and not feel intimidated when your opponent hurls pieces at your king.Trade Review"The examples in the book reflect very well the practical decisions from our daily chess practice. McDonald explains in clear language the dynamic techniques and these are certainly based on 'human' solutions to the problems of defense. The author also does not fail to let his years of experience as a coach shine through between the lines. The interactive style ensures a smooth reading experience, where you sometimes feel like you are sitting at the table with McDonald... Thanks to that coaching wisdom, the psychological side of defending is also frequently discussed.", Translated from Schaaksite.nl

  • What Chess Coaches Don't Tell You

Everyman Chess What Chess Coaches Don't Tell You

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisAre you a parent of a junior chess player who feels that because you don't know how to play chess, you can't help your child? Or are you an adult or junior chess player who has taken private chess lessons for years, but feels you haven't been progressing? In both cases, there can be a lot of reliance on a chess coach who has been given free rein with lesson content and direction. They probably have some sort of plan but it is likely to be a plan used for all their students. This is not ideal. More important is a well-thought out, individualized plan, that focuses on a specific player's unique strengths and weaknesses. Formulating such a plan is crucial for making improvements. Victoria Doknjas and her son John Doknjas are an ideal writing partnership to tackle this topic. John is a FIDE Master who has already established himself as an excellent and highly-respected author who understands the improvement process very well. Victoria has over a decade of experience navigating the competitive chess arena with her three master-level sons, including also running her own chess academy. Together they offer a unique and informative insight to those wanting to get more out of their chess studies, as well as presenting practical advice in areas including: * Identifying important goals and how to work towards them. * Understanding how to objectively analyse your games. * Maximising the efficiency of software and engines for learning. Reading this book can broaden your horizons in the essential areas of chess study, and ideally let you better evaluate what your chess coach is teaching you. And if you don't have a chess coach, this book will provide you with an excellent foundation for serious chess study.

  • Play the Barry Attack

Everyman Chess Play the Barry Attack

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThe Barry Attack is a highly aggressive system that arises after 1 d4 Nf6 2 Nf3 g6 3 Nc3 d5 4 Bf4. Although the concept of the Barry Attack has been known for a century or so, the modern interpretation (as with a number of other dynamic white systems) has mainly been developed by English grandmasters over the past couple of decades. This “modern interpretation” is often not very subtle. If Black provides a target by castling early on the kingside, White will often let rip with moves such as Qd2, Bh6, 0-0-0 and h4-h5, playing very directly for a quick checkmate. If this strikes you as too crude to have a chance against a sophisticated and competent defender, then a quick glance through this book will undoubtedly change your mind. You will witness countless games where very strong players are destroyed on the black side in less than 30 moves. Sometimes a lot less. This makes the Barry an ideal weapon for those who love to attack. Black’s defence has to be very accurate. If not, a quick annihilation is on the cards. Play the Barry Attack is the ideal guide to this fascinating opening. Anyone who reads this book carefully and studies all White’s attacking ideas will have a fearsome weapon in their armoury.

That is the message of Matthew Sadlers thought-provoking new book, based on many years of experience with the worlds best chess software. You may not be able to replicate their dazzling-deep calculations, but there is so much more your engine can do for you than just checking variations! Matthew Sadler, co-author of the ground-breaking bestseller Game Changer, presents some unique methods to improve by using your engine. He explains how in your opening preparation, instead of sifting through masses of computer analysis you should play training games against your engine. He also shows how to train your early middlegame play, the conversion of advantages, your positional play, and your defensive skills. And, of course: how to analyse your own games. These generic training methods Sadler supplements with concrete techniques. He explains how the top engines tackle crucial middlegame themes such as entrenched pieces, whole board play, attacking rhythm, exchanging pieces, the march of the Rooks pawn, queen versus pieces, and many others. He also opens your eyes to typical strategies that the engines found and fine-tuned in popular openings such as the Kings Indian, the Grünfeld, the Slav, the French and the Sicilian. Sadler illustrates his lessons with a collection of fantastic games, explained with his trademark enthusiasm. For the first time, the superhuman powers of the chess engine have been decoded to the benefit of all players, in a rich and highly instructive book.

  • The Modernized Italian Game for White

Thinkers Publishing The Modernized Italian Game for White

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisThe Italian Game is the front-line of modern chess. After a hundred years of oblivion, in the 21st century, it edged out many other renowned openings, and is employed today by all the world’s top players. Its modern interpretation is full of new ideas, and its theory has grown thanks to the research of modern grandmasters. This book is an attempt to comprehend the current state of this opening. The book, however, is not just a collection of lines of this fashionable opening. Its main idea is to demonstrate the key ideas and typical techniques in various opening positions, with every key idea being highlighted in the text. The manual can thus be used as a strategy textbook in Italian-type positions; it even includes a special section called ‘The Italian Endgame’. A separate chapter is devoted to one the most important problems of modern chess, that is, getting similar positions of the Italian type from other openings. The book should be of interest to players of various strengths. Trade ReviewThis Guioco Piano for the 20th century is the subject of The Modernized Italian Game. Authored by grandmaster Alexander Kalinin and Correspondence grandmaster Nikolai Kalinchenko, this thick tome is part instructional manual and part theoretical work. Unlike The Modernized Ruy Lopez, the material here is organized around model games, 128 of them in all. Like Swiercz’s book, there is a fair amount of prose to instruct and orient the reader. The Modernized Italian Game ends with short chapters on the Guioco setup (Bc4, Nf3 and pawns on e4, d3 and c3) and examines how it can also crop up in the Two Knights Defense, Philidor Defense and Bishop’s Opening. Examples of the latter two are 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 d6 3.Bc4 (played by a young Gary Kasparov) and 1.e4 e5 2.Bc4 Nf6 3.d3, which aims for the Guioco Piano while sidestepping the Petroff Defense. • It Is Never Too Late To Become a Grandmaster

Thinkers Publishing It Is Never Too Late To Become a Grandmaster

Book SynopsisIt has been 60 years since I took up chess as a serious pursuit. Considering that sufficient time has passed I think that now I should look back and discuss the results of this effort! In the course of writing, I sought to make the book biographical but that did not always work out and some of the events from my chess life were not included in this work. Perhaps there will be a future book in which these events, as well as events yet to happen, can be told. For the past 10 years my name has had a special mark on the final standings - Veteran. At first this was somewhat confusing, but I soon realized that in all the spheres of human activity the word "veteran" has a noble meaning. My friends often ask me, "Vladimir, are you not tired of playing chess"? I always answer emphatically, "No, I am not tired. Where else can I find such a huge space for self-expression?"? Steinitz once said, " Chess is not for the faint of heart.” I agree 100%! Chess players do not need pumped up muscles, they need a sound mind with which to resist the constant pressure exerted on every nerve that is experienced during combat. I do not always like this constant struggle and the stress that comes with it. It is even worse when one makes a mistake in a winning position. In this past decade another "problem" has been added - incredibly powerful computer engines that younger opponents skillfully use in preparation for the game. But when you win a beautiful game or use a theoretical novelty invented at home (albeit with the help of a computer), or defend a difficult hopeless position, how great it is! And at such moments you do not think about chess being a science or artistic effort or even sport. At times like these, they are just part of your life. Now it is time to let you turn the page and see just how incredibly interesting it is to be an active chess player, even as a veteran!

  • Opening Repertoire: The English

Everyman Chess Opening Repertoire: The English

    2 in stock

Book SynopsisThe English (1 c4) is a fine choice for players who like to enjoy a wide variety of middlegame positions. One of its great attractions is flexibility and diversity: White can play either aggressively or quietly, and the resultant middlegame positions are rich in both strategy and tactics. In this book, International Master David Cummings presents the reader with a complete English repertoire. The English is, by its nature, highly transpositional. Black can opt for a King's Indian-type set-up, a Queen's Gambit Declined-type set-up or aim for a reversed Sicilian position. David identifies promising methods to meet all Black's main options and efficient methods to deal with awkward sidelines. The English often leads to situations where there are opportunities to employ tricky move orders. David explains how to navigate through these successfully and avoid any unfortunate pitfalls. This book tells you everything you need to know about playing the English. *How to play 1 c4 with confidence*Emphasis on plans and strategies*Written by an English expertTrade ReviewCummings writes in an engaging style and is very strong on explaining the ideas for both sides throughout the book. He pulls off the trick of making it very accessible to club players and/or those new to the English while at the same time offering enough ideas to tempt 1c4 aficionados, making this one of the best Everyman opening books of recent times. --- Sean Marsh, CHESS Magazine
