    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThis title primarily focuses on the functional mechanisms and roles of Ca2+ channels in the central nervous system, and the effects of Ca antagonists on cytosolic CA2+ by blocking voltage sensitive channels. These findings are an important contribution to understanding the mechanisms of brain dysfunctions, including Alzheimer's disease, cerebral ischemia and affective disorders, as well as the effects of cytosolic CA2+ modulators on neuronal cell death. In addition the results of clinical trials are reported using typical and atypical Ca antagonists in the treatment of neuropsychiatric diseases. An essential reference to some of the most current and vital research into Ca antagonists as therapeutic agents, this monograph is invaluable for all clinical and pre-clinical researchers active in the multidisciplinary fields of neuroscience, including: psychopharmacology, molecular biology, behavioral pharmacology, neuropharmacology, and electrophysiology and immunology. Investigators of Ca2+ dynamics and brain dysfunction especially will find this book useful in the development of novel drugs to treat neuropsychiatric diseases.

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisBiotechnology has not stood still since 1991 when the first edition of Biotechnology - The Science and the Business was published. It was the first book to treat the science and business of technology as an integrated subject and was well received by both students and business professionals. All chapters in this second edition have been updated and revised and some new chapters have been introduced, including one on the use of molecular genetic techniques in forensic science. Experts in the field discuss a range of biotechnologies, including pesticides, the flavor and fragrance industry, oil production, fermentation and protein engineering. On the business side, subjects include managing, financing, and regulation of biotechnology. Some knowledge of the science behind the technologies is assumed, as well as a layperson's view of buying and selling. As with the first edition, it is expected that this book will be of interest to biotechnology undergraduates, postgraduates and those working in the industry, along with students of business, economics, intellectual property law and communications.Table of ContentsSection I: Matters of Business: Managing a Biotechnology Business. • Embedding New Technologies into Society: A

Pan Stanford Publishing Pte Ltd Embedding New Technologies into Society: A

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThe embedding of any new technologies in society is challenging. The evolving state of the scientific art, often-unquantifiable risks and ill-defined developmental trajectories have the potential to hinder innovation and/or the commercial success of a technology. The are, however, a number of tools that can now be utilized by stakeholders to bridge the chasm that exists between the science and innovation dimensions on the one hand, and the societal dimensions on the other. This edited volume will draw together leading researchers from the domains of law, philosophy, political science, public administration and the natural sciences in order to demonstrate how tools such as, for example, constructive technology assessment, regulatory governance and societal scenarios, may be employed by stakeholders to assist in successfully embedding new technologies into society. This volume will focus primarily on the embedding of two emergent and emerging technologies: nanotechnologies and synthetic biology. Government, industry and the epistemic community continue to struggle with how best to balance the promised benefits of an emerging technology with concerns about its potential impacts. There is a growing body of literature that has examined these challenges from various cultural, scientific and jurisdictional dimensions. There is, however, much work that still needs to be done; this includes articulating the successes and failures of attempts to the societal embedding of technologies and their associated products. This edited volume is significant and timely, as unlike other books currently on the market, it shall draw from real work experiences and experiments designed anticipate the societal embedding of emerging technologies. This empirical work shall be supported by robust theoretical underpinnings.Table of ContentsIntroduction - Foxes become hedgehogs. Reflexive co-evolution and governance patterns. Governance approaches for emerging technologies. Society as a laboratory to experiment with new technologies. Care and technoscience: re-embedding the future of innovation. Division of moral labour as an element in the governance of emerging technologies. Ethical reflexivity as capacity building: supportive tools and approaches. The demand side of innovation governance: Demand articulation processes in the case of nano-based sensor technologies. Evolving Patterns of Governance of and by Expectations. The Graphene Hype Wave. Transnational challenges of governing new technologies: The case of nanotechnology. Co-Regulation of Nanomaterials: On Collaborative Business Association Activities directed at Contributing to Occupational Health and Safety. The ‘Metamorphosis’ of the drone: the governance challenges of drone technology in border surveillance. On the disruptive potential of 3D printing. Modifying Materials, Mosquitoes and Measures: The Regulation of Nanotechnologies and Synthetic Biology. Conclusions.

The University of Chicago Press Subjects of the World

Book SynopsisBeing human while trying to scientifically study human nature confronts us with our most vexing problem. What we need to move forward in our understanding of human agency, this book argues, is a reform in the way we study ourselves and a long overdue break with traditional humanist thinking.Trade Review"In Davies's bracing book, we get a resounding manifesto for naturalism, in particular as it pertains to our perceived free will (Davies argues that this concept is otiose). His is not the first naturalistic manifesto, but it is arguably one of the most trenchant.... The gauntlet has been cast and it deserves being picked up. The author reminds us that being a coherent naturalist is a serious and difficult philosophical project; as such, this stimulating book should be read by all philosophers interested in the implications of naturalism." • Environmental Law for Biologists

The University of Chicago Press Environmental Law for Biologists

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisEnvironmental law has an unquestionable effect on the species, ecosystems, and landscapes that biologists studyand vice-versa, as the research of these biologists frequently informs policy. But because many scientists receive little or no legal training, we know relatively little about the precise ways that laws affect biological systemsand, consequently, about how best to improve these laws and better protect our natural resources. With Environmental Law for Biologists, ecologist and lawyer Tristan Kimbrell bridges this gap in legal knowledge. Complete with a concise introduction to environmental law and an appendix describing the most important federal and international statutes and treaties discussed, the book is divided into four broad parts: laws that focus on individual species, like invasive species policies, the Endangered Species Act, and international treaties such as CITES; laws that focus on land, from federal public lands to agricultural regulations and urban planning; laws that focus on water, such as the Clean Water Act; and laws that focus on air, such as the Clean Air Act and international measures meant to mitigate global climate change. Written for working biologists and students alike, this book will be a catalyst for both more effective policy and enhanced research, offering hope for the manifold frictions between science and the law.
