Book SynopsisTEXT IN ITALIAN. The work of A Tabucchi, one of Italy''s greatest contemporary writers, is imbued with the topic of individual identity. His texts query the self-perception, the relation with the Other and the relation with the historical and cultural world while expressing at all these levels an experience of dissolution: the self is fragmented and fragile; the Other is always absent and missed, and instead of being engaged in the present world, the subject lives in an intangible reality that does not make any sense. This profound existential anxiety and the weakening of identity are emphasised by the very way of narrating of Tabucchi which is disconnected, enigmatic and full of silences. The book by Pia Schwarz Lausten describes various manifestations of the above-mentioned experience through the textual analysis of a series of figures and motives such as memory and absence, reversal and multiplicity, the said and the unsaid, history and commitment. Some of these motives involve on the one hand existential and philosophical aspects, and on the other esthetical and literary values. The analysis is based on two theoretical perspectives that in different ways describe an overcoming of a classical subjectivity in favour of an idea of which the Other or Alterity is an essential element to the definition of individual identity: M. Bachtin''s concept of dialogism and G. Vattimo''s weak thought. The former serves to define the narrating subject in Tabucchi''s texts characterised by different discourse levels and others'' words. The latter concept describes the position of the subject of post-modernity determined by a weakening of the strong structures of modern thought. The book is written in Italian.

  • Peeters Publishers Antoine Galland (1646-1715) et son Journal: Actes

    3 in stock

    5 in stock

  • James Joyce in Ostend

BAI NV James Joyce in Ostend

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisJames Joyce, one of the greatest writers of the 20th century, spent several weeks in Ostend during the summer of 1926. In order to escape the oppressive heat of Paris he, his wife Nora and his daughter Lucia chose fashionable Ostend to cool down. From Paris he wrote several letters, mainly to the American Sylvia Beach who had her famous bookshop - Shakespeare and Co. - in Paris, as well as to Briton Harriet Shaw Weaver who supported him financially. During his stay, Joyce takes long walks along the beach, his daughter Lucia takes photographs that are published for the first time, and in a pharmacy, Joyce meets an Irish friend whom he hasn't seen for more than 20 years. During his stay the family undergoes a terrible summer storm which will affect Finnegans Wake, his latest publication. In one of his letters (dated 11 August 1926) he writes about Ostend: "This is by far the best place we have been in for a summer holiday."

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisAlthough valuable works have been written on the Mughal dynasty throughout the world, Mirza Haidar and his achievements failed to get the attention they rightly deserved perhaps because he was constantly surrounded by a galaxy of luminaries hence the need for this humble corrective endeavour. With his multifarious contribution to the develop- ment of Kashmir during the short rule of a decade amidst political problems and internecine warfare, Mirza Haidar Dughlat Kurkan, born in Tashkent, in 1499/1500, proved himself to be a remarkable man of many parts a gallant general, a good painter, a calligrapher, born poet, excellent administrator and above all a great scholar and historian. Despite extensive patronage to scholars and historians, no official history was compiled and his own magnum opus Tarikh-i Rashidi is far from being a focused court history, memoir, or autobiography. Nevertheless, a man of his calibre was not doomed to be wiped out from pages of history as he had earned enough through his deeds to immortalize his name and fame.

    HarperCollins India Insatiable

Book SynopsisIt''s a promise India''s most beloved writer delivers on in her irreverent memoir about the year leading up to her landmark seventy-fifth birthday. Quintessential exuberance and keen observations firmly in place, she tells us about travelling solo, feasting (and fasting) with family and friends, the triumphs and losses that accompany ageing, the vagaries and vulnerabilities of being a writer and, above all, how food connects people in the most unexpected places and delightful ways. From where to find the most delicious lassi in Jaipur, her obsession with kasundi and conversations with a Nobel Laureate who is a gourmet to M.F. Husain''s last food khwaish and what''s served at Aamir Khan''s dinner table, Shobhaa takes us into the dining rooms of politicians, artists and celebrities, to festivals and parties and other social events, and, more privately, into her home, where food is always the prime subject of conversation.
